My wife and I were at the Saugus location on Saturday 10/25/25 at 12:43 pm. The food and service was excellent. But attention must me given to correct exit and departure markings. Those are fading and should be repainted. As I entered there was a gray Audi sedan clearly tried to exit in the wrong direction. I stopped but the Audi stayed on his wrong direction exit. He squeezed by my vehicle with only inches to spare. That operator was very strange. In fairness to that man, I owned the same model Audi ten years ago. I got rid of that car rather quickly because the service cost were much too expensive . Perhaps that incident which will show up on security cameras will sustain this review . Fortunately there was no damage to either car The Audi owner might have an issue with his infotainment system. There are so many vehicles on the road not being properly maintained This creates creates a hazard for all of us. An ideal solution would be for Kelly's to engage a third party proctor and find out if it's legal to trace a VIN number to detect a potential recall. The proctor could at least inform the operators who are perhaps unknowingly creating a danger. . That fellow should be given the benefit of the doubt. A polite text message could be sufficient. I've been sitting on this review for about 4 months now because I find it unfair to rate a restaurant purely on one experience or the prices of the food. So when I have issues pop up, I take some time to distance myself in hopes of writing a balanced review. That being said, in some cases the experience and/ or the prices do factor into my overall feelings and such is the case here. When I lived in Massachusetts I was a casual customer at the different Kelly's locations. I almost always got the seafood. Only had the Roast Beef and other food selections a handful of times. I'm mostly a seafood loving person. I moved to Florida and find the seafood here doesn't live in the same universe at what's found in New England. Frustratingly enough, I can't find whole belly clams in Florida, I can only find clam strips which usually taste like they came from a box. So when I went home for a visit I was sitting outside Kelly's a half hour before they opened eagerly taking pictures like a tourist and drooling over the thought of fried clams in all their whole bellied glory soon to be in my belly. My husband and I were the first and only customers. We ordered a lobster roll and two medium clam plates. I assumed we had ordered two medium lunch portions which would come with fries or a bag of chips. I didn't care that I had just dropped $80 on lunch because I was so excited to be finally about to get good fried clams. About 15-20 minutes into waiting for our food we were notified that the cashier had charged us for calamari instead of clams so we were issued a refund and then recharged for the clams. Our bill had jumped from almost $80 to $145! I put on my Karen hat and marched right up to the register to find out what was going on. A guy who I assume was the manager explained prices had gone up and he had to pay his chefs. Now at that point our food had been cooking for awhile. Even though I wanted to cancel the order I did feel bad that they had just cooked over $100 worth of clams and felt like since we were the only customers it would be a waste of food, time and money to refuse the food. So I took the hit. Yes, the lobster roll and clams were delicious. But I left feeling so downhearted I likely will never go back. There are far better restaurants with far better customer service and much better food in the greater Boston area. read more

I went with my husband. He had a roast beef. Say it's ok but not enough sauce. I ordered my favorite scallop plate. The fried and onion rings are ok but the fried scallops did not look fresh, dried breading with salty scallop. I ordered a side salad which does not look fresh at all. I ate there. Kelly's was our "go to" place for years but not any longer. Since the new ownership, the food is not as good as it once was. The french fries were the first to change and not for the better in my opinion. went yesterday after long late flight home and not much else open. Bread was stale which I hadn't experienced at kelly's in 40 years. Noticed one of the fish tanks gone and the main tank lights broken and water dirty. Although this has nothing to do with food it does show the lack of care to the business. Not the icon it once was. As for service, seems couple of people really try to keep the place going while the others don't appear to listen and/or understand what's being asked. we ordered 2 roast beefs plain cut in half, they both came with sauce. I ordered Kelly's clam chowder to go. It has been my favorite so many years. When I ate it, I found it was loaded with clams. Unfortunatley, they we like elastic bands and tasteless. Medium side order of scallops $50, was a bit of a let down. I imagine if I ordered my scallops for there as a scallop plate instead of a take out side order it would have been acceptable. Anyway, they serve bay scallops not sea scallops. What the heck, this ain't Rhodesia Island! No decent reputable seafood take out in the Mass area uses bay scallops. Sea scallops are tastier and better all around and have been the norm for higher end take out. Also, If they knew anything at all about the business they would know the " take out " order they sold me should have been served in a flat styrofoam or cardboard container with vent holes to air out the excess steam. When I got home 10 minutes later and dumped the steam soaked soggy scallops onto a plate I was so disappointe. All the breading had come off. read more

*Corporate Kelly's, take notice of my review. I was served by Kevin who IMHO, is a true professional server. I meet my buddy in Boston. We're catching up and I tell him there are some great lunch places I found on Yelp. He tells me he's not eating carbs, glutens and some other BS. I jump in the car and we wind up at Kelly's Roast Beef for lunch. What a nice looking and comfy restaurant! The concept is, you order your food and a server will bring it your table. Easy Peasy! First time here, I wanted to order one of those signature Kelly's Roast Beef sandwiches. I looked at the menu board, man.. there is some New England fish happening at Kellys! Fried clams, lobster rolls as well as fish & chips are also menu choices. Such a nice concept, its a very nice way to dine for lunch. We order our food and here's where I was impressed with Kelly's Roast Beef. Our server came to our table and was hospitable. Is there anything I can get you, I'm asked. It was just a pleasant experience. Most servers would drop off your tray and not say a word, the customer service experience was welcomed. I am so saddened to leave this review. Kelly's roast beef was a piece of Americana. It was something we could all agree on. It was perfect. Good food of consistent quality served by friendly people in generous portions for a fair price. Ever since the corporate takeover there have been cheapskate moves (like not leaving salt and pepper out, and not giving a pickle with a sandwich) that are ruining what was essentially a perfect place. I got a tuna sandwich today as I have gotten for many years and it was served with no potato chips, no pickle and no box. They've changed recipes and the portions are smaller. The employees don't seem happy either. Probably because all day long they hear people like me asking why things have changed. I think it probably cost about $.20 for a bag of potato chips when you buy in bulk. A fraction of that for a pickle. His new owners have apparently decided to take the short view. Becca and Brendan: We love a roast beef place on the opposite side of the highway so decided to give this larger restaurant a try. We used the drive thru and the worker was funny, chipper, and helpful. The menu seems large but we had our eyes on the roast beef sandwich (nearly $10). There are seemingly limitless toppings but we got ours with horseradish and bbq sauce and sliced onion. The onion slices were SO THICK (def recommend asking them to thinly slice) and the meat was abundant and rare but not as tender and fresh as the competitors. I know there's inflation but I'm not Bezos rich so $31 dollars start to raise my expectations a little. Unfortunately, my expectations were let down. Yes, the volume of food you get is large, but the quality... ehhhhh. I've had better onion rings from fast food joints and the tartar sauce was bland. Came here with a very hungry 14 and 18 year old and they were incredibly happy with what they got. We got a cheeseburger, turkey club with avocado and a roast beef sandwich with fries and onion rings. Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh and of very high quality. Going through the drive through took a little time, but it was worth it. A little pricey, but very good. We didn't have time to drive to the walk up stand at Revere Beach, which is our usual go to, but it was very convenient. I typically get a lobster roll and fried clams from the Revere Beach location,, but couldn't seem to justify getting them through the drive through. Kelly's place was a good stop. I will say the clam chowder was tasty - but the same night - I had Allison's and it was much thicker and tastier. The ship platter looked great. The shrimp box was fantastic. The roast beef was just ok. I much rather have Portillos in Chicago. The sauce as hot peppers are just a tastier experience. So I think I will stay with the box of shrimp with Cajun spices. Very nice read more

The cashier was friendly and it is a huge space, so it feels relatively safe during pandemic times. As for the sandwich itself: the roast beef alone was the tastiest part of the meal--but the combo with the bun itself and the cheese/BBQ sauce felt on the drier side and the BBQ sauce was a bit too sweet for me. I went to Kelly's drive-through on route one and I was excited to get a large roast beef with cheese and sauce a little extra sauce and some fries and tartar. Unfortunately when I got home my beef with all brown not a real piece in the barn my fries or a little soggy and I only had one tartar sauce. Are usually enjoy Kellie's and have for almost 50 years now hence the reason why I was disappointed in my take-home meal. As for the other parts of the review the parking lot is very large well lit and clean. The drive-through stays open late night which is nice and convenient. Special requests are usually accommodated. Even though I grew up in MA I've never been to Kelly's. We decided to stop on our way to the casino. That roast beef is fantastic. Ordered a small order of fried scallops. Again small, but what I got was minuscule!!! For $25 it was a ridiculous waste of money!!! It seems they weigh their portions but soak the scallops overnight, and then some, in water so they soak up the water like a sponge and weigh exponentially more. Opening the bag with the order and pouring the order out was mostly a matter of pouring water, very few scallops and mostly liquid. This is my favorite Kelly's. When visiting the North Shore we usually stay on Rt 1 in Saugus because it's easy to get into Danvers, Peabody Salem, Beverly, and I can hop over to Boston and even Lowell...my in laws are spread throughout these cities. The proximity isn't the reason Iove this Kelly's more than the one in Danver's, however...since the tone isn't far away from the in-laws. Saugus Kelly's actually makes the lobster rolls and Roast Beef sandwiches better at this location! After this visit I'm sure it wasn't just a fluke because the last time I ate at both locations over 2 years ago I felt the same way. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Kelly's fan and I'll go to any one that's offered. This Kelly's seems to use more celery and less mayo in the lobster roll and the au jus for the roast beef is to die for here! My go-to is the Surf and Turf: a lobster roll and a roast beef sandwich. I get a side of au jus and horse radish. It's so good I don't even need cheese and I'm a cheesehead. I honestly don't know the history of why roast beef sandwiches is a thing in Mass. I hear that Kelly's in Revere is supposed to be the first to put it in the map. I just know that I can't get that same sandwich outside of mass and of all the roast beef style sandwiches I've had in other cities, this is my fave...it's worth visiting the in laws just so I can have it. read more

I go through the drive through today to get a large roast beef meal. I ask for Diet Coke for my drink and fries and onion rings as my sides. I ask for two tarter sauces, and I ask for some extra fries and onion rings since for the amount you pay for a large roast beef meal, I'd like more of the fries and onion rings, which in my humble opinion, they skimp you on BIG TIME. The roast beef itself was rubbery and didn't seem fresh at all. Yuck! I went in to speak to manager Artie who didn't care at all based on his unempathetic look, lack of apology for his staff mistakes, and the fact that he wouldnt give extra fries or onion rings. I asked him for the amount one pays, there should be more fries and rings. He didn't seem to agree and never apologized for his staff mistakes on my order. I called corporate and am waiting for a call back. And corporate, this is directed to you: this policy you have of weighing, you need to up the amount since the fries and onions rings given are WAY too low for the amount you charge!!
