Well, I had my coffee but nothing to go with it. Looking around on Yelp for bakeries, Kelly's Donuts came up. Most of the bakeries opened later and I was up at 6. It was also a bit farther away near the Capistrano beach area and not in walking distance. The drive to it was nice though. Took El Camino to it and the freeway back to San Clemente. Friendly greeting when I was next. They have a number of donuts to choose from but also some baked goods as well. I ordered a chocolate croissant? danish?, let's say pastry, an almond pastry or was it a bear claw?, a flaky cinnamon twist, and a chocolate old fashion. I had to try the donuts too! LOL! Kelly's is a great little local donut shop and they do breakfast and lunch sammiches as well. My wife loves their tiger tails, and I go for the apple fritters. The ultimate works breakfast sammich is da bomb. Bacon, sausage, ham (or turkey), egg and cheese on a croissant... So good! You can change up the bread also. We wanted some lunch and funny enough we tried two other restaurants before coming here and they were both closed. One of the restaurants was by Kelly's and someone out front recommend Kelly's for lunch. I just assumed it was only donuts and was surprised to see it wasn't just that. Less than positive experience on last and final experience. My 2 friends waited approx. 15 minutes for there bagels with cream cheese. Reason from what I could tell is when we showed up & ordered there was just us & maybe 1 or 2 other people in store. After we ordered & stood there waiting a crowd showed up. Instead of giving my friends there order they were to busy grabbing the money of the new peeps. My friends finally said "this is getting kinda ridiculous"! So I ask the younger of the ladies what the hold up was? She didn't even reply to my question. Finally there order showed up. Oh I forgot The one guys coffee was barely 60% filled. The food is fantastic but there is one employee (the one who wears the car apron) who is rude and a liar. She blames customers for her mistakes. Example- I asked for a glazed twist and received a chocolate. When I went in to get it exchanged she said I requested chocolate, which was not true, because it was for my son who doesn't eat chocolate and I know I asked for glazed. Additional example- their card reader had a communication error and timed out (which it had just done with the customer in front of me) and she told me it was my fault for entering the wrong pin, which I didn't and wasn't the error. I don't need to be gaslit over small customer service issues while I'm getting donuts and the fact that it's now happened twice really bothers me as it proves telling lies to cover mistakes is part of her character. How does this place get 5 stars? No way. Maybe employees trying to seed yelp with 5 stars....sad. Walked in to somebody that stated they were a new employee. The digital menu kept moving around. Was hard to order an item from the beginning. Ordered a simple grilled cheese sandwich. How does a restaurant fail at that? Literally someone put two pieces of toast in the toaster and added sliced cheese after they came out. I showed the employee what was wrong and she offered to fix it. Fix it????? The so-called chef in back doesn't even know how to make a grilled cheese sandwich....do I need to go to the back and actually show them?!?! YOU COOK IT ON THE GRILL for starters.... Whatever happened to serving food hot?!? The rest of the order was not worth it. Fries barely warm if not cold. Never going back there ever again. Besides the fact that she gave me attitude. Always been a big fan of Kelly's! Been going here for about 8 years now and I can't believe I haven't posted a good review yet. This is your everyday typical doughnut shop look. The food and service however, has always been consistent, mainly because it's run by the same two people (they're a couple I assume) and they have always done a great job running this place. I love their sandwiches and blended mochas the most. However there are so many other things to enjoy, all made with fresh ingredients. I have not ordered anything I don't like here so far.
