Rose Cafe & Donuts has probably got the best breakfast sandwiches in San Clemente, although, I have to admit, this was really the first time I had ever "checked out" San Clemente longer than a pit stop for gas. As my mom and I were "passing through" taking this l-o-n-g-e-r rest stop from driving on the 5 (we were on our way to San Diego), we decided to get something more substantial to eat. Anyway, you have to go here. Rose Cafe's food seemed quite popular, considering there was a constant stream of customers ordering, and everyone noticeably ordered something different. I really liked the outdoor tables and chairs, located right outside the eatery. It definitely allowed us to enjoy the cool ocean breeze, even though you can't see the water. Ambiance is simple, and inviting. The reviews talk about breakfast burritos, so that would be interesting to try in the future. I will primarily focus on the donuts and service, which were both amazing. Love the variety of donuts, including donut holes. Nice to be able to bring 12 donuts and 12 different donut holes (powdered, sugar, cinnamon, sprinkles) lots of different options including the delicious apple fritters, croissants, and traditional donuts. My biggest compliment is to the service. So nice to be greeted with a smile, complimentary donut, and even asked to bring the donuts to my car since he knew I was holding a toddler in one arm! My husband and I were craving a breakfast burrito after our one night stay at Doheny State Beach Campground and we came across Rose Cafe & Donuts. We came early Friday morning and it was packed. There were a lot of regulars where the owners knew their orders and everyone that worked there was so friendly. We ended up ordering the Supreme burrito to share (egg, sausage, bacon, ham, hashbrowns, and cheddar), maple donut, and a blueberry cake donut...they even added an extra blueberry donut for free! The Supreme burrito was delicious and I loved how there was so much filling compared to the tortilla. Most breakfast burritos i've had had way too much tortilla but this one had more filling. It was cut perfectly in half and the presentation was gorgeous. No wonder this place is a hit! Friendly service and amazing breakfast burritos. My wife and I both ordered the Lox Bagel (she had a plain bagel; I had the sesame seeds one). Piled on the two halves of the open-faced bagels were high-quality lox, lots of cream cheese, plenty of crunchy capers, avocado, arugula, tomatoes, and red onions. All of the ingredients were very fresh --- and even though it was the end of the day for the cafe (near 2 pm), the bagels were soft and delicious. Really first-rate. After devouring the lox bagel, we then got a terrific donut, covered in a maple glaze. Yum! We ate inside the cafe (it's a simple venue). The woman who served us and the owners were very friendly. I haven't been to Rose's since the new ownership. Mostly everything was the same but they have a few different types of donuts. I was a little disappointed I couldn't get a hot latte (since it was a chilly day), but I got an iced chai latte and it was really good, pretty sweet but a nice treat. I also got a BLT on toasted sourdough. My only feedback was the bread was way too buttery...I'd prefer it on the dryer side. The fries are delicious, but I was missing the extra seasoning! This store is really a one stop shop for everything breakfast. You want donuts, they have it... burritos, yep... sandwiches, sure.... Coffee, of course. I was making my way down South for a couple of hikes and I stopped here for a burrito which I can have for breakfast and lunch. At least that was what I was hoping for, just a very large burrito. I ended up with the CA burrito which has bacon and ham and sausage and eggs and avocado. I did not order the cheese or sour cream. The burrito did not disappoint... It was huge! I didn't know it, but what I ordered was one of the most popular item and I can see why. The burrito was truly large enough for me to have as both breakfast and lunch on the trail. We've had their cheeseburgers, Patty Melts, Pastrami Sandwiches, Breakfast Burritos, and, of course, their delicious chocolate cream filled donuts. Our first morning on the ocean vacation and we were both jetlagged and hungry at 7 AM. We looked at Yelp and there were two breakfast places, literally right behind us, that would be a five minute walk, but up the cliff about 300 feet above us, which meant a five minute drive including an interstate portion. Ok. We went there. At the strip mall, we saw the two and decided to enter the smaller, cozy looking one. We were right. Rose Donuts is a muffin, donuts and bagel emporium. With awesome coffee. And the board announced more complex breakfast items that I had not the space for. Outside, several groups of people were having amicable conversations on the ample outside seating - in at least three languages- while inside, it was non stop activity. I got a walnut bran muffin that looked beautiful and tasted even better. As well as an almond milk latte for me and a regular for my other half. Service was very courteous and efficient. At first, I was the only person in line but it quickly got packed inside while waiting for my food. There was a small selection of donuts left which was understandable considering they close at 2. This has been a favorite spot of mine for several years. In addition to donuts, they also prepare food. Everything looks good. I personally have always ordered the same thing and not yet ventured out to try the other menu items - a warmed croissant and large iced chai tea latte. Its been great every time, and the service is usually great also. Staff was always friendly and helpful. However, today's visit was very different. When I asked for light ice on my iced chai tea, the woman filled the cup halfway with ice. When I reminded her that I wanted light ice, she said, this is light ice. If half a cup of ice is "light" are they now normally filling drinks to the brim with ice so you only get 1 sip of an actual drink? I told her, I,m sorry but thats too much ice. Her response was "well I already poured it". This was a shocking response. As if I should accept my drink wrong just because she failed to listen initially and made a mistake. She acted inconvenienced to fix it - as if she forgot that paying customers are the reason she has a job. I also asked for no whip cream, but I still wanted the sprinkle on top that they usually put on (I believe its cinnamon). She claimed they never sprinkle anything on top and questioned if I was confusing their restaurant with another, as if I dont know where I usually go. Strike two. I asked if she could please just add a sprinkle of cinnamon on top and again she acted very annoyed with me. I myself work in customer service and have done so for 24 years now. Of course nobody wants to go to work, but you slap a smile on your face and be friendly and helpful anyway. Fake it till you make it. I was really disappointed that this employee didnt understand the basics of customer service. Example: oh no problem. I would be happy to make that drink with light ice and a dash of cinnamon. Is there anything else we can get for you today? Thanks for stopping in. See you next time. Customer service really isn't difficult if you are willing to just put in some effort. I tried to get a variety of things for the whole family including a bear claw, donuts and donut holes but I really wanted to try this smoked salmon bagel. It sounded really high end with its capers and avocado, it did not disappoint. I've never had a lox bagel before, but this might be my new favorite thing.
