Tonight we came into Kehde's bbq and it was an absolutely wonderful experience from the fine fellow who ushered us into the dining room with his boisterous and energetic attitude. Having never been into the restaurant it was quite nice, very casual but upbeat and had a positive air to it. We began with the fried portobello mushrooms and dip. The seasoning and breading on them was absolutely full of flavor, great job to whoever does the breading. We then had a garden salad that we split which was a perfect lite, delight, the raspberry poppyseed dressing is a must for salad lovers! Finally, we also shared a kehde's special of society (burnt ends are just the best) sour cream and chives fries, with beans. Everything was incredibly delicious and to top it off we had the best service from Kristen who was very attentive, conversational and made sure our dining experience needs were excellently catered to (plates for both of us, making sure drinks were full, checking on us). All in all this was a great experience and I hope many others get the chance to dine here if they have not. read more

The place was pretty loud, conversation was difficult. I ordered the rib plate with sweet potato french fries and the wife ordered the burnt ends and cole slaw. My ribs were very good, nice smoke ring and were not fall off the bone, which is good. The beans were out of a can but were doctored up with onion and small chunks of meat, not bad. The slice of Texas toast was meh. The sweet potato fries were luke warm and very limp, not the best I have had.The burnt ends looked like some over done prime rib cut into nice square pieces with some thickened BBQ sauce. The cole slaw was actually pretty good, the wife liked it. Here again, the Texas toast was meh. Overall, nothing special to write home about but a good dinner. read more

Still making this our stop every year, the fried catfish nuggets are hard to beat! The cornbread coating, crispy yet tender inside. I got a few bites of my BF brisket sandwich - thinly sliced smoked strips. The baked beans have some tidbits of remnants of smoke meats & are little on the sweet side just like I like! This has been a landmark restaurant in Sedalia for many years. I have eaten here several times throughout the years and it is not bad. I make my own brisket and I think it's the best in the world. So I'm more than a little bit biased in favor of my own cooking because I can cut off all the fat. That's the problem with the beef I have gotten here: way too fatty for me. But they have fairly reasonable meals that are pretty good as well. The other bad thing is that it is extremely noisy if they have very many people at all. read more

A fun thing to do with the kid, after all, it's an old train car, but it did seem rushed, e.g., rapport with the server was more labor than it should have been, you may know the menu, but I don't. While I may use them for takeout in the future I'm not too keen on repeating the experience. Fair prices for the quality of food, a non-cynical kid's menu .e.g good value, and not the usual attempt to cut costs that you see in a lot of chain restaurants. Good coffee which was kept topped up,: BBQ beans were excellent and went a long way to make the burnt ends taste good. the basic fries were soggy, but the thick ones were great, it's a mixed bag. This is a pretty good place to eat, especially if you're wanting a more complete meal. They have a good variety of options for lunch or dinner. The one caveat I would add is that the brisket can be much too fatty for my taste. The fat should be cut off and more meat should be added to the plate. That is really a big sticking point with me. If I'm paying for brisket I want meat and not a bunch of fat! I have never had a steak at this place so I can't speak to those. read more

Wow is about all I can say. BBQ pork sandwich and baked beans. The basics of life and the best taste ever. I was a little concerned that the place was going to be all about the look -- which is great -- and not about the food. However, I was wrong again...fun restaurant with great food. The place was packed for a Thursday lunch but we got seated right away. The waitstaff were cheerful and we had excellent service. Atmosphere was good and my BBQ nachos was good. The downside I have about the experience was that I ordered a couple things for to go and was told that the fries were unbearable to eat like they been sitting out for a long time or cooked in old grease. Can't say enough good things about our lunch today at Kehde's BBQ! Karen, (her real name,lol) was so pleasant, laughing and joking with her numerous clientele. I had the "Daily Special" of Catfish, served piping hot, and a delicious cole slaw. My new-friend Bob had a Beef sandwich with waffle fries, which were also crispy and delicious. As a true Kansas Citian, I'm ever on the lookout for BBQ restaurants when out of town and being the son of a KC Union Station retiree; Kehde's Barbeque was a no brainer to visit. Part of the restaurant is located in an old passenger rail car and the interior is filled with old photos and memorabilia harkening back to the golden age of rail travel. Situated across the street from the Missouri State Fairgrounds, Kehde's is a iconic must stop for any Missourian. With a very large and varied menu, plenty to look at, lots of photo ops, and downhome small town hospitality there is no reason not to miss this experience at least once. My burnt ends were quite nice and authentic, not just a plate of cubed roast as some places pass off as burnt ends. My 2 sides of baked beans and vinegar based coleslaw were lackluster. My buddy's Miss Piggy sandwich - fried tenderloin with ham looked good and he said it was, although his fries were rather undercooked and soggy. I'd love to give Kehde's 5 stars and for the nostalgia factor and longevity; they certainly deserve it, I would even be will to round up for the pretty good BBQ, but a few too many side flaws are keeping them from a "wow" rating. My suggestion is to narrow back on the menu options and focus on mastering one of two specialties instead of trying to please the world. I'm very glad I experienced Kehde's but probably wouldn't return unless I'm showing the place to a newbie or just needing a homemade pie fix while on a round-trip; I didn't have any but they looked great in the showcase. read more

Passing through Sedalia while riding the Katy Trail, my buddy and I were on the lookout for something unique and Kehde's delivered on all aspects. Set in an old train car that used to run the rails that we rode, this local joint is as fun as it gets. There are cool old homages throughout that pay tribute to the history of the rail, plus, they have pies. Lots and lots of pies. The food was fine -- we weren't expecting a ton as my riding buddy is a vegetarian but was willing to piece together sides as a meal. I got the Guberburger in honor of my dozens of visits to the old Wheel Inn before it closed and it hit the spot after 37 miles. The burger was definitely of the frozen puck varietal, but hey, it was good as were the greasy curly fries. Our service was great with every single person being friendly and on the ball during our visit. When she read the pie list my eyes got big, and even bigger when I saw my blackberry slice a la mode. The ice cream was softball sized, the pie was fresh and definitely homemade, and we left feeling stuffed but great. Highly recommend Kehde's as a nice local option in Sedalia and extremely close to the Katy Trail! read more

It's alright in my opinion first time I went there I ordered a salad thinking the meat would be at least smoked or have some type of bbq flavor but no the meat was lunch meat cut up. The second time we did take out they got our order completely wrong and forgot a portion of it. They were nice enough to refund us for the missing portion and apologized for the messed up meal. That was about it there was no third chance it's like your regular typical home cooked bbq just as if my dad or myself would grill I think. read more

Over the last eight years my husband has had to stay in Sadelia almost every month for work. Quite often I accompany him. We have tried out almost every restaurant Sedalia and thought that the area just didn't have anything all that great. Why we never tried Kehde's is beyond me. The inside has the old-school 80s restaurant feel with the memorabilia of a diner. The workers were beyond friendly. I loved that our waitress not only suggested one item but she suggested several and the way that she would like them if she was ordering them. She even introduced us to some regulars that were seated a couple tables down in case we had any more questions and wanted answers from a local. I'm not a great judge of barbecue so I left that up to my husband. He got the Society Plate which he said was absolutely fantastic. I went for the catfish plate which was amazing. The potato salad, recommended by the locals, was the star of my meal! I don't think I've ever had potato salad so good. Our waitress said the reason it's so good is because of their secret ingredient... "love". We ordered two slices of pie. One pecan and one strawberry rhubarb. Apparently Kehde's gets its pie from someone named Miss Vicki who goes to the local farmers market. I don't know who Miss Vicki is, but, she makes a darn good pie! Never had rhubarb before so I was a little skeptical, so glad I tried it! Only disappointment is that they seem to currently have the railcar closed. Guess we will have to come back when it opens up! This is probably the first time I've ever wanted to give a restaurant more than a five star review. We may be going again tonight because we have some friends in town that are looking for a place to eat. I will definitely be getting another piece of pie! Seriously, try it out! had the full slab bbq ribs and full chicken first time passed this place for years on the way to the ozarks never had time to stop in first its hard to smoke chicken and have had good luck a few places they were good here not tough easy to eat not over done spare ribs were great not tough and easy to eat again Now I wrote the place to find out if they are using flavored smoke or charcoal and lighter fluid with no response. I cannot tell what the flavor is its a mix of maybe cinnamon garlic honey or molasses and smoke flavoring or charcoal/lighter fluid I honestly cannot tell such a unique flavor trying to figure it out. I dont want them to give away secrets so , if they do not answer that is fine. good job on the meats... sauce on the side was sweet with a hint of spice , im not a spice fan but was able to tolerate this level. read more

Nice atmosphere and service was pretty quick after a Sunday lunch wait. We had the onion blossom as an app and it was good but the homemade ranch was pretty awful and tasted mostly like sour cream. I managed to get a prepackaged ranch which helped. I ordered burnt ends and missed the part where it said it was all the random meats leftover from the smoker. When I asked she tried to tell me it was beef but it was just a mishmash of chicken, pork, ham, and crumbs of beef and a really small portion at that. She offered to bring me something else but I didn't want to pester so most of it got boxed up to go to my pups back home. I order a loaded baked potato but got fried cauliflower instead and my second side was the coleslaw which just vinegar and sugar dressing (not my preference). My spouse enjoyed his ribs and baked beans but wasn't impressed with the bbq sauce. I cannot say great enough things about Kehde's! I always get the BBQ Posh Potato with ham and it is the greatest baked potato I have ever had. I have been going since I was a baby, and have very fond memories here. The staff is retained very well, and always remember my family, and treat us like family while we are there. The train car is fun to eat in, but is a little hot! The atmosphere is very family friendly, and the mechanical horse is always fun to ride! Kehde's menu is roughly half BBQ. There are plenty of non-barbecue options. My return was for the 1/4 rack of ribs (3), which included a side. Ordering ribs here provides the option of baby back or spare, so knowing the differences is useful. My spare ribs were tasty and slid from the bone--evidence of long cooking. A bit more seasoning would have benefited but I added a little salt. The side of curly fries was awful. Kehde's fries are home style--hand cut from fresh potatoes--which can be challenging to cook right if you want a crispy outside and light, potatoey inside. Kehde's thin fries were limp and greasy with no potato taste. My server offered a replacement. I declined but appreciated the offer and her excellent service. High marks for ribs and service. read more

My husband, daughter and I have been wanting to eat on the train since we moved to Sedalia 2 years ago. We finally found time to do so and are very happy we did. The food, service, atmosphere all were fantastic. We felt comfortable here and will definitely be back. My husband had the Fried Pork Tenderloin Sandwich as well as the Prime Rib Sandwich (he couldn't pick between the two), and I had the Society Dinner: Burnt ends and pieces, garden salad, Texas Toast, Green Beans, and a Baked Potato. This place was very fun! We had a reservation for six in the train car. It was entertaining! There is an upstairs (train car) and a downstairs which is a more normal restaurant atmosphere. The decorations are old school. The food was great. The portions were good and service was fast. It isn't glamorous or fancy; but it is reasonably priced and great for the atmosphere. The BBQ sauce is sweet without much heat. The ribs had a great smoky flavor. We will be back if we're visiting the area! read more

I used to be in Sedalia a fair amount and remembered Kehde's "posh potatoes" with fondness. lt are baked potatoes topped with various ingredients. My favorite variety included chopped brisket, cheese and sour cream. We were on our way to the lake on a Friday night, along with 91,265 of our closest friends on Hwy 65. We were hungry called our order in. Upon arrival, we pulled in the designated spot to pick up our dinner. The gal who brought it out was super friendly and even gave the little Aussie a small milk bone. Nice! We were finally able to turn left through the bumper to bumper traffic to get back on our way. I began to carefully unpack our meals to eat on the road. I began digging. And digging. And frantically digging some more. Nope- NO CUTLERY IN THE BAG. Really? A baked potato with butter, sour cream, cheese and chopped brisket but no silverware?? Forget turning around and going back in that traffic. This place has always been a must-stop anytime I am driving through Missouri I will drive out on my way to hit the spot if it is around meal time. I love the history of this place. Sedalia in general has awesome history and just an awesome place to visit even for a short amount of time. Thier Society Posh is a must-try! The burnt ends on that spud are amazing! I have never been here when it was not completely filled with people. but that does not stop the service from being amazing I've never had bad service no matter how busy it is and like I said I have never been in there when every table was not full. read more

I came in on a busy Saturday. The staff seemed a bit overwhelmed, and service was pretty slow. I ordered a side of ribs with fries. The ribs were very good, and definitely on the sweet side. There were some bites where you caught bits of sugar granules, but I really liked the flavor. The fries were adequate. I would definitely go back for the ribs. However, I was very disappointed by the apple dumplings I ordered to go. They appeared to be nothing more than canned filling wrapped in puff pastry. I had ordered them before and remembered them being homemade. The fact that they are now basically made from packaged ingredients soured me a bit toward Kehde's. read more

Kehde's has great BBQ--no doubt. It's a fun, family atmosphere. I had a little issue with the service but that was kind of my fault going there about 1hour before they were going to close on a Sunday. They had ribs on special, so I ordered them. I was told, "Sorry we're out." so I ordered something else--they were out of that too. I went through a couple other items which they were also out of but finally ordered the brisket and fortunately they had that. The waiter asked me what sides I wanted, they were out of everything I wanted so I finally gave up and told him "Whatever you have left, I'll take." I was getting a little frustrated at that point. I wish the waiter had started out by saying, "We're going to close shortly, so we're out of a number of items on the menu" but he didn't.
