After one of the Snowmageddons and the power outages that occurred, I was looking for a place to plug in my phone and all the chain restaurants were full. I just happened upon Kefa (only a few people in it, foolishly for the rest of S.S.), and I never regretted it. EVER. Sure, it's a little small, but that makes it so much better. Nothing fancy, a whole lot of silly stuff to decorate the place, nothing matchy-matchy - oh, and the food... I was horrified to hear about what happened to it, but I kind of had the (extremely) selfish wish that it would mean that Kefa would move out to where I now live. I miss it bitterly. It's a dining experience even with plastic forks and paper plates, if they had them. read more

Great place, and great coffee/food. Conveniently located inside the library and the staff is very friendly. They have these awesome vegan lentil pastries that I highly recommend. The cappuccino was as strong as I like it, and they have a station set up for brown and white sugar for your coffee. There are a few sugary treats I had yet to try, but look forward to coming here again. I sat in there table area and got a lot of work done for school. Great lighting and warm inside, which was great for me since Maryland cold weather is kicking my butt. I sat in one of the desks with access to a wall unit and very ample space. Personable......quaint, reminds you of a cafe in Europe. Nothing fancy, great get-away from the Starbucks of the world. The Sisters that run these cafes are unassuming with grace. An absolute gem of a coffee shop!!! I will be in here a lot!!! I just moved here from California and I've been looking for a good coffee shop to plant my roots and I definitely found it. I am a big time coffee shop junkie (especially after working at one of Southern California's busiest and more higher end cafés for over 5 years) so I am very very happy to find a beautiful mix of professionalism, hospitality, quality, and ambience. So far their coffee and pastries - including their scones which I had to try from a negative review - was phenomenal!!! I had a great experience at the silver spring library location so I wanted to check out the main location for a potentially bigger selection of coffee and breakfast items. While my bf and I took our dog for his morning walk, we decided to stop by. I went in and ordered an iced latte and ice water for my bf (his drink of choice). The cashier rings up my latte, almost $5, but I go to Starbucks so whatever, and my bfs cup of water for $1.25!!!!!! I was astounded but I made a mental note and kept quiet. She looked up and said I might as well get the boxed water, to which I agreed, and kudos for the ecofriend...liness. I went to hand her my card and she said there is a $10 minimum!!!!! There's not a min at the smaller location, so I was pretty surprised again. She stuck to her guns and told me there was an ATM across the street. I looked up and my poor bf and dog were already over there sitting on the curb in the shade, waiting patiently in the heat. I said I would just pay for the next person's coffee (which everyone was clearly shocked by because it took a while for it to click). So I paid and moved on. When I got outside I realized I hadn't ordered my usual vanilla flavoring. So I went back in and requested some, contemplating that $10 minimum, but no worries, the cashier said they don't have vanilla flavoring! I asked for classic, still nothing. I had to force some turbinado sugar into my ice drink which you can imagine didn't go well. I thought cafe implied coffee was the mainstay but obviously it doesn't. Would NOT go back to this location, its overpriced with a limited selection. The barista at the library location was WAY friendlier and accommodating, they had everything I asked for (same as above), and it's right around the corner. read more

Just got back from Kefa Cafe where I met for almost 2 hrs. w/a friend. I was a little early, so ordered my cappuccino, a little wet (I'm a coffe snob!), & a biscotti--made locally. Both cappuccino & biscotti were delicious. The 2 ow ers--sisters-- we're warm in their welcome greeting, helpful & overall as pleasant & lovely as anyone could hope for. My friend, who'd never been, was also pleased by the service, his bagel & muffin, calling the cafe a great find. Adorable, local, friendly, reasonable--even worth the schlep from Bethesda, where there's nothing but chain coffee places that I dislike mucho. Cafe Kefa is wonderful--give it a try, for sure! read more

What a gem! This cozy little restaurant not on a main street is easy to pass by. Fortunately, a "Buy With Me" coupon brought two co-workers and I there today. The food is delicious, served quickly, well-priced, and the woman there (seemed to be the owner) was extremely kind and sweet. It's a very homey place. I got the quiche. It and the bread it came with were delicious as was my friend's muffin. He also said his chicken salad sandwich was excellent. We'll definitely be back. read more

Two warm and kind women run this excellent café. The conversation was delightful. I only had a black iced coffee, but I was delighted to find that the ice cubes were made out of frozen coffee. No more being gipped by watery coffee! I was also able to find that they are now strictly serving local milk from a specific farm of which I forget the name. Why suddenly change to a pricier option? Because these women care about good service and good product. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Since it's in the older downtown area of SS, it feels like you've gone back to when towns and cities had real Main Streets. Fantastic coffee, great service, and comfortable atmosphere. I think this is the best place to get coffee in downtown Silver Spring (and one of a handful of really good coffee places in the DC area). If you're a coffee connoisseur, I recommend the hand-pour. Their coffee is sourced from small farmers and the cup I had this morning had a really delicious, complex flavor with lots of unique qualities. Based on the positive Yelp reviews, I took a chance and ordered a macchiato, which can be a terrible choice in a mediocre coffee shop. But this one was excellent, exceeded my expectations. I visited the cafe, with a friend, for the first time today. We sat at a table, talked and enjoyed the ambiance, which was intimate and homey. The cafe mocha we ordered was delicious (we had two cups each.) We also shared a turkey sandwich, which was okay overall, but the bread was soft and tasted fresh. This is my favorite cafe in Silver Spring, and not only for their fair trade coffee and local organic pastries! Their cozy back dining room is available to rent in the evenings for private parties. We just threw a one year wedding anniversary for dear friends, and it was the perfect venue. They even provided a coffee and tea service, and we were able to bring the champagne and cake. The sisters that run the cafe are so hospitable that you feel like you're in someone's home! I just learned that they are going to have live music/open-mic night this Friday Nov 8th from 7pm to 9pm, and King of the Vagabonds is playing!! read more
