I genuinely wanted to love this place. The non-toxic, waterless service environment is a differentiator that's hard to find elsewhere. But after three visits with recurring quality issues and frustrating customer service, I can't recommend it. Each visit left me with nail problems requiring fixes. When I reached out, responses took two days at a time, and I was ultimately asked to pay for a correction that was clearly a workmanship issue on their end (after paying $110 for my builder gel manicure service). Pricing has also become a sticking point. Keen is now among the most expensive in the area, and the structure feels unnecessarily layered: builder gel is a separate charge with no color included, gel color selection costs extra on top, and removal is billed even when you're booking a new service in the same visit. These aren't premium add-ons -- they're things most high end salons simply include. High technician turnover makes it hard to build consistency with anyone, too. This place is good in theory, but the problem is they have one job which is to have nail polish that is not goofy and dried up and sticky and they can't seem to do that. Over 2/3 of the nail polishes available of regular nail polish are completely expired as well as the topcoat that the staff are using. If you get a regular nail polish here it won't ever dry and you'll have to redo it at home because the nail polish is so old and expired. The only thing they have to provide is nail polish and they can't seem to provide that.? are the staff just lazy or are they struggling financially??? read more

I've been to Keen twice. The first time I went, I left very unimpressed. The staff was friendly, but the regular polish selection left a lot to be desired and they were serving poor quality tea. I loved the design I got on my toes, but other than that, I felt it was overpriced. I wouldn't have gone back, except that I wanted a Dazzle Dry manicure and needed a place close by. What a difference when I returned. The salon was fun and buzzing, packed in the middle of a weekday. They had a much better regular polish collection. My nail tech commented on my beautiful Dazzle Dry design, but said it's too hard to do, so they don't offer it. Which says a lot right there. However, overall, the experience was lovely and my manicure lasted a while. I'd only go back in an emergency, but it is a nice experience. read more

I came to Keen for a mani/pedi because I'm attending a wedding tomorrow where I planned to wear open toed shoes. The nail tech cut my toe pretty bad. I give her credit that she acknowledged her mistake and put ointment on the cut. I didn't say anything because I understand mistakes happen, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I got home and saw all the dried blood. I was curious what "waterless" nail services look like so I booked a pedicure. Tina (my technician) did an amazing job making me feel comfortable and doing the pedicure. She noticed that my right big toe had some polish pooled by my cuticle area upon finishing, and chose to re-do the polishing for that toe (instead of just cleaning it up with a tool). I'm very impressed with her skill and service. My only critique is that they should be more clear on their website what each services cover in the booking page -- the "keep it youthful" pedi is meant for 12 yo and below but that's not stated. I mistakenly booked a "keep it quick" pedi thinking it was full service (it said cut, filing, polish) but was told that it meant "color change" and very little shaping. I had to ask to upgrade on the spot, and was accommodated. Other than that, I had a good experience and will likely return! read more

This nail shop popped up on my social media timeline, so I wanted to give it a try! Positives: The salon is really clean. I was able to book a last minute appointment and booking online was very easy. The website explains what each service includes. I loved the availability of the People of Color line of nail polish. The extra manicure included massage which was nice! Negative: The nail tech had low energy and the only thing she really said to me was to relax my fingers and thank you at the end. The receptionist did not bother offering me water or tea but I heard her offer it to the customers who came after me. I know this because they were sitting next to me and she made sure to walk over to them and ask them. I did the extra manicure and my nail polish is already chipping, 2 days later. This is a $45 manicure. You have to find street parking so you may have to circle around a few times, depending on how busy it is. Keen is my new go to nail place since moving to Clarendon in 2024. I get the simple mani-pedi and each time I have had positive experiences. The staff and technicians are super friendly & the inside set up is very fresh & clean. I get my nails done by Daria & Anika depending on who is available with my schedule. I had a fantastic experience at keen. This salon offers waterless manis and pedis and offers a nontoxic environment for you to relax in. I went in on a Sunday afternoon. I did not have to wait. I was offered something to drink as I sat down to get my nails done and then again when I sat down for my feet. Rachel started with my gel mani and then did my regular pedi. I went with the keep it simple. I really like how they apply sunscreen to your hand before placing it under the light. I'm curious as to how long my gel mani will last. I'll come back and update. This was my first visit and scheduled relatively last minute as I was coming from out of town. My original nail appointment was cancelled the day before my trip due to a snowstorm so I needed to find a place in the DMV area. At that point, I had my original nails on for 4 weeks and was going to be out of town for a few weeks so I knew I needed to find a salon. I came across Keen and chose them for their builder gel offering. I only do builder gel so I requested a foreign gel removal and builder gel manicure. As soon as I walked in the door, the service was excellent. I was 30 minutes early due to an earlier appointment ending early, but the front desk staff had no issue with it. They ask you to wash your hands immediately and then I was shown the gel polishes. I asked for assistance color matching what I already had on (OPI "Put it in Neutral" gel). She offered mixing two colors together but I ended up selecting BIAB "Teddy." It ended up a a bit more opaque than my OPI but the color is still lovely. While waiting, I was offered tea which was unexpected but a pleasant surprise. There were also lit candles that made the salon smell very nice (but not overpowering). The front desk staff was kind, thoughtful, and helpful. Once my nail technician was ready, someone stored my coat for me, brought my tea to the desk, and offered a basket under my seat to hold my purse. My technician was Diara(sp?), if I remember correctly. She was easy to work with and did a fantastic job on shaping and gel application. I asked for my nails to be shortened just a little bit and almond-shaped. She also repaired two of my nails that were ripped. The curing, though, was the most painful curing process I've ever experienced (and I had do one finger at a time so I went through the pain 10 times). I do not know the reason for such excruciating pain, perhaps it was the lamp or the gel used, but that was the only unpleasant part of the process. At the end of my service, she applied a hand scrub and massaged it into my hands. After washing it off, she applied lotion and also massaged that into my hands. Checkout process was painless, and because it was my first visit, I was given a goodie bag with a sample of their hand scrub and some other items. My only complaint is the prep process. While my cuticles were pushed back and snipped, the rest of the skin surrounding my nails went untouched. I knew my right hand in particular needed some TLC, but it may be a salon policy rather than the technician. My home technician is very particular about the prep process and puts time into making them clean and neat. I'd come back to Keen if I was in town again and needed services done. Got the basic "simple" pedicure. Overall great environment, decor, serene and peaceful, very clean, no overwhelming chemical odors, respectful and pleasant staff and good business philosophy but the pedicure service itself was average unfortunately. Perhaps it was just the tech so I will give the place another try with a different staff member next time. Was advertised as 45min-1 hour but my pedicure total time was less than 30min (28min to be exact) from when tech sat down until she was finished. Would have been more accurate to just call the service "express pedicure" instead. Was greeted with a warm and welcoming reception. Love that they ask everyone to wash their hands. Was seated into recliner and served hot tea. Perfect so far! Tech was a few min behind and finished up with one customer and then came to me immediately afterwards. Tools were clean, fresh out of the sterilized pouch and supplies appear to be all individual /disposable. Not a lot of time was spent going through each step, so not sure if she was rushing. Cuticles and massage were good but not much time or even force was used during exfoliation. Paint job appeared decent from afar but did not cover corner to corner upon close examination, which is something I look for in returning to the same tech or spa long term. For $60 plus tip, I expected more value. Want to like this place so will give it another try with another staff member. read more

I booked an appt for the "best" kind of manicure they have per the girl who checked me in, but when I sat down the manicurist told me she didn't have time to do tips. Waited 4 days for a manicure appointment and had to get up and drive home because they don't factor in the possibility of tips with a builder gel appointment. Ezzy My nails were a wreck from trying everything from SNS to gel. I was beyond frustrated because it seemed like nothing I put on my nails would last past a week or two. Something would crack, peel, or lift. I've been in search for a nail salon that was clean, provided good service, and used more natural products and process. Keen came up on instagram and I was intrigued. I called to make an appointment but checked online and their booking site seemed easy and straightforward. I made an appointment for Monday morning for a builder gel manicure. You walk-in and immediately feel a sense of calm and peace. Everything is clean. Ezzy was my nail tech and she was super nice and professional. I've never had a waterless manicure and she walked me through the whole process. I was being super indecisive about the color(s) I wanted, I even switched right before application, and she didn't get frustrated or annoyed with me. I liked the concept of the waterless manicure. I'm always skeptical of the cleanliness of the bowls and supplies used at other places. Ezzy walked me through the builder gel process and the highlights on getting it. I'm super excited to report that my manicure is going strong into week three. Other than some new growth, my nails are in perfect condition. I think I found my salon and nail technique! After trying my first waterless pedicure in Chicago this summer, I've decided I only want waterless pedicures from now on. Therefore, I was sooo happy to find a nail salon offering waterless pedicures in the DMV. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a pedicure sans soaking your feet in a gross water bowl. If you're nails obsessive like myself, you'll know that you're not supposed to paint wet nail beds if you want the polish to last, so it has never made sense to me to soak my feet before painting them. Also, waterless pedicures are more hygienic and eco friendly. My entire experience was very relaxing. The interior is minimal and spa-like. I was offered tea from a tea menu when I sat down, which I thought was a really lovely touch (and the tea was nice looseleaf tea). I got the keep it extra pedicure, which was excellent. The hot stones and towels were so relaxing. My only feedback is that the scrub was a bit coarse on the tops of my feet on on my legs (it was fine on the bottoms of my feet), so I think a finer grain scrub would be better for the more delicate skin. I'll definitely be back because I refuse to get anything but waterless pedicures from now on haha read more

On August 14, I went to Keen for the second time. Actually thought I'd found my place. Because I'm pregnant and looking for a toxic free salon, despite the 1 Hour Drive, I was willing to do it. I choose a French tip design with my natural nails of course. The day of the service seemed relatively pleasant. I had previously tried Dazzle Dry and I was told that if I used it on my French tip design that it would last longer. So I obliged the $10 up charge for extended wear. Well, literally the next day, I immediately noticed that my nails were chipping and that I did not receive a quality service despite being charged the extremely high price tag. I simply called the salon and spoke to the manager. Initially the call was pleasant but then she called me back advising that she needed pictures emailed to her. I obliged and in response from her, got a very chiding email stating that I was informed that gel would last longer which was a total LIE. No one ever advised me that I should consider gel versus Dazzle Dry. Strike 1. DISHONESTY AND LACK OF INTEGRITY. She then informed me that if I "kept having issues with the quality of their work that I was basically not welcomed any longer! I was in total shock . Over such a relatively small issue that there was a threat for me to not come back?! Who talks to customers like that for YOUR MISTAKE ?! Sending a chiding threatening email?! The manager offered 50% off to come and have the basic manicure redone. Fast forward to today I booked over the phone and it was relatively easy and simple. However.......... This extremely rude lady from the Keen front desk literally kept calling me after I initially booked my service and called me 4x's harassing me to "make sure that I understood the salons policy". She relentlessly harassed me in a chiding, condescending manner over the phone claiming that she wanted to ensure that I knew that I would not be getting 50% off the booked gel manicure service but only a Basic manicure. When I walked in, she went straight into a full blown rant about the policy in front of the whole salon. When I told her that I felt uncomfortable and like I was being singled out and harassed, she apologized and continued the harassment . I told her that I'm pregnant and didn't feel like I was being treated fairly. They couldn't have cared less! Will certainly not be coming back to this place or giving them my hard earned money just to be scolded by an 18-year-old as if I'm a child ! I love this salon so much, and recommend it to everyone looking for a nail place. The staff there are kind, detail oriented, and really good at their craft. I now come here regularly, and have gotten gel builder, gel color, and chrome -- all have turned out great. I most recently got them refilled for a wedding I'm going to be in. I'm a very indecisive and particular person, and the staff is SO patient and helpful in helping me figure out what I'm looking for -- even the owner helped me pick out a color by comparing it with her own nails. Although I've been going to another nail salon since about May, I stumbled upon Keen's website a couple of months ago, and decided to give them a try. I'm giving them 5 stars because of the service provided and the grace they gave me. I ran into slight car trouble while I left, and called ahead to let them know I'd be 10-15 mins late. Though I left a message, they called just as I parked my car in the garage across the street ($5 parking), to be sure I'd still make it (they hadn't yet listened to my voicemail). As it was my first time, I had to use GPS to find the location. My GPS kept turning me around, but they were patient with me and my several calls to figure out where they were, and gave me better directions than Apple Maps. Pro tip--they are next door to Orange Theory and facing the 7/11 across from them. After apologizing profusely, I met with Emma who, after seeing my desired design, helped me pick the right colors for execution. I will say that I don't think this is a "design studio." Not that they can't do designs, because look at the picture...Emma killed it!...but I noticed that out of the multiple clients who were there, I seemed to be the only one getting a design. That's neither a negative nor a positive, just an observation. The ambiance is incredibly relaxing. I had the peony tea (delicious) that is highly caffeinated but I still felt like I could cuddle up and fall asleep. I don't want to invalidate others' experiences, but the chairs were comfortable for me, and I tend to have back problems. The music--if you worked or shopped at Victoria's Secret in the early aughts, you'll be familiar with the vibe. In fact, I told Emma that a song that played was actually on one of the mixes when I worked at VS. Lol like others, I didn't really miss not having a tv to look at. The atmosphere far outweighed that. All in all, this was a great experience. Emma took her time and though I was late, didn't rush through the job or make me feel bad for being late. A word to the wise--if you're going for builder gel, make sure you book well in advance. I went back, and a different nail tech, Ash, tells me that Amika did them incorrectly. She then painted over the previous incorrect base and did not offer me a discount or even try to remove them. I was instructed to get them removed the NEXT time which takes 2 hours on top of the actual service. I was never offered a discount and when I called, they said the most they could do was 10% off. I couldn't believe how terrible their customer service was. I tried cancelling, and they tried charging me for the appointment until I broke down in tears over this. I'm a non-toxic salon loyalist and was looking for a local spot when I needed a manicure at the last minute and my regular tech at another salon was booked. I remembered hearing about Keen online and was thrilled that I could make an appointment quickly and easily online. I've now been back for 2 manicures becusee they are that good! I love the gel polish that they use and there are so many colors available. The tea menus are a nice touch and I like the emphasis in sustainability (no tin foil for removal!) and that they out sunscreen on your hands. All in all, the details are on point and both of my nail techs were fab. It's a few dollars more for a gel manicure than my last salon but I find that the extra details make it worth it. I typically don't give Yelp reviews unless the service is exceptional or the complete opposite. I was so happy to find Keen but that's changed over just 3 visits. This review is based on hygienic practices and the service of my last visit. This was my third visit to Keen (for pedicures only). The first visit was exceptional from the welcome I received when I walked in to the quality of the service which brought me back. The second time was good but not as great as the first but I gave Keen another chance. During this third and most recent visit, the greeting from the girls at the front desk felt a lot less than warm but I moved on. In the first two visits, I was offered a throw for my comfortably. This was not the case during this visit. Yet, other women before and after me were offered a throw during their pedicure service. I was barely offered a beverage. I didn't notice this until I was into my service. On to the service - the nail tech kept putting her hands in the trash to throw things away (seemed not only not clean but a little counterproductive since the trash bins open using your foot). She also buffed my nails a bit too roughly. I also did not care for the towel dragging the floor that she wanted to use on my feet. I also noticed this was not the same practice used on other clients. Maybe she was new? I did appreciate that she offered my nail file to me at the end. I had not experienced that in the past. For the high quality experience that Keen promotes, they missed the mark with me. I don't believe in doing business where I don't feel welcome or that doesn't emphasize quality hygienic practices with their employees. The customer service sets the tone for the visit and the hygienic practices beyond the initial handwashing (which I do love) at the beginning just lacked for me during this visit so unfortunately, I will not be back. read more

I came to Keen because it was recommended by a photographer I'm doing a shoot with (Tina Leu Fotos). I thought the front receptionists (in particular one of them) was sweet, attentive, and really hard working. They not only are serving drinks, ensuring customers have a place to put their items, offering blankets, but also helping to turn over stations by wiping them down, etc. I love the commitment to being nontoxic - great for this mama-to-be! Even better is their commitment to sustainability. The use of towels that can be laundered, waterless pedicures (you really don't miss the water), etc. I really can get behind. I even really enjoy the scents - the smell of the soap, the candle in the bathroom, whatever they had going at the front desk. None of it is grossly overpowering, just right. Most important, I had a really lovely mani-pedi by Oyun. She was sweet, gave great massages with good pressure, and checked in just the right amount to ensure throughout the appointment I was happy with how things were going. I got the Dazzle Dry and I just love having quick drying nail polish - no UV lights, not toxic chemicals, but still a great result. I enjoyed not only feeling a little pampered but also feeling like i was doing it in a safe and sustainble way. I wish Keen was closer to me as I live in Maryland, but I could see myself occasionally making the trek out to support their great mission and workers. read more

Update: Shortly after posting my review, I received a call from Brittney, the Operations Director. She apologized for the circumstances of my experience today and clarified that what I was told by the receptionist regarding their booking practices was incorrect and stated additional training and education would be provided to prevent this from happening again, to me or others. I'm impressed by Brittney's responsiveness and devotion to ensuring the satisfaction of customers and the skills of the staff. I've been here several times now and have generally been pleased. The space is clean and minimalist and the techs all seem very kind. Though services are a little pricey, I don't mind paying for attentive service. Water or tea is offered upon seating and you're able to keep the file and buffer used, if you'd like, since they are single use. The in-house made scrub is a great exfoliant and nourishing. And the wash station is stocked with hand towels and nice smelling soap. Today I was disappointed. I had made an appointment with a particular tech but after waiting for a few minutes, the receptionist asked me to sit at one of the stations. When I told her I was happy to remain in the lobby until my tech was ready, she said the tech only needed a few more minutes and that I should follow her to the station. After a few minutes, a different tech introduced herself and started setting up. When I told her I had an appt with another tech, the manager (I think) came over to apologize for the miscommunication and explain that my appointment had been changed. The tech I booked was running behind and had a hard stop so she couldn't see me. While the tech who performed my service was nice and talented herself, I don't appreciate not being given the option to reschedule prior to making my way into the shop. 10% was taken off my bill which really didn't do much for me. At checkout, I asked the receptionist if she could explain what happened to my appointment and I was told that she had changed it herself. When I told her that I had selected a particular tech and received the confirmation and nothing more, she said that techs are not guaranteed and that if I didn't want to be moved I would need to call them to let them know. WHAT?! After realizing my bewilderment, she said she would put a note in my profile to not move my appts in the future. While I will likely still patronize the business, I'm posting this review for your general awareness of booking practices. read more

This place has really gone downhill. The vibe is more harried and less comfortable. It used to be so pleasant. But after making multiple missteps *on my birthday* and having the owner herself triple down on poor decisions made every step of the way, I feel like my relationship with this once stellar business has run its course. Emails that chastise the client are never a good way to gain repeat business.
