It was super convenient making a pit stop here for lunch, and the food was very yummy! We got the lamb shish kebab, the cabbage rolls, and the homemade bread. The lamb was flavorful, but it was a little on the tougher/chewier side. We were surprised by how much we enjoyed the cabbage rolls! They were perfectly cooked and flavor packed. You're driving through central PA on the way somewhere, maybe near or maybe far. Your kids/ in-laws/friends are reaching "stranded mountain rande sports team plane crash" levels of hunger, you've run out of peanut M&Ms, and Google Maps says there's no Applebee's for at least 90 minutes. Suddenly, Kavkaz erupts from the highway side scroll like a squat Georgian Statue of Liberty. The staff are kind and patient, the decor is soothing and unfussy, and the menu is fantastic, whether you're a Soviet bloc/central Asian gourmand or you've never even tried borscht. So, do try the borscht, and while you're at it, the manti (dumplings), Georgian chicken stew, and the khachapuri. Chug a Tarragon soda. Finding this spot while my partner lived in Lewisburg was a massive relief. Not only is the food consistently amazing, she is Russian and it brought her back to the food from the place of her birth. But even as an American my whole life, this food is just universally good. We always got big portions and never felt too weighed down. It obviously of homemade quality with love as if you are part of the family. The hospitality is fantastic and seeing how many people come in there weary of travel but finding good food and feeling also creates a warm and comfortable atmosphere. I cannot recommend this place enough. One of my favorite places - my partner moved back to NY where we will have some great food here - but kavkaz isn't just "better" in quality than it's neighboring towns. The food is amazing. Lived in Europe for many years. Since returning I have not been able to find food this flavorful. We were heading east on I80(exit 192). So happy to find this place. Self service. Walk up to the counter, read the menu, push a button and someone comes out to take your order. She gives you a buzzer and you wait at the table you have chosen. My wife and I have spent 50 years crisscrossing the country stopping at restaurants to eat, and Kavkaz stands out as one of the best stops ever. The food is delicious and nourishing. A fellow customer, Sophia, a native of Belarus and a lieutenant in the U.S. Airforce apparently makes regular stops between training in Ohio and her home in eastern Pennsylvania, and she gave us an orientation on the menu helping us select Kharcho, a spicy tomato, beef and rice soup. My wife selected the beef Stroganoff, delicous and filling, and the owner recommended the Khachapuri, a Georgian cheese bread topped with sunny-side-up eggs. We found ourselves longing for more the next day. Finding a good diner in the middle of nowhere is always a plus. In this part of Pennsylvania, there's not much, and most of it is miles off the interstate. What a pleasure, then, to find well-cooked, delicious and unusual food conveniently off Interstate 80. Giving this an overall 5 star because I really review for food vs ambiance. Food was delicious. We got the dish with eggs, cheese in bread and it was perfectly cooked. Our friend, who never had Russian/Ukrainian food loved this so much. Bread was soft, eggs were slightly runny. Cheese had so much flavor. We also got their homemade bread. Again, perfectly made as bread should be with a yeasty smell and flavor. The dumplings (manti) were good as well. Very flavorful, filled with minced meat and onions and spices. We also got the chicken kabab and loved how the chicken chunks were grilled with a crispy layer to it. Cabbage rolls were smaller than a typical Polish cabbage roll, but still tasty. Not dried out. Flavorful. We wish it were closer to us. It's about 100 miles from us and we stopped here on our drive home. Ambiance is lacking as it's more like a trucker stop. Laghman was a bowl of stew with bucatini-like noodles. Georgian chicken stew was comforting and delicious. Bread was awesome, crusty with a soft interior. Cheesy bread was thin and stuffed with melty cheese. Samsa seemed to have a phyllo ish type of wrapper and beef filling was similar to the one in manti. Mantis were beefy with oniony punch. Really recommend this surprise gem if you are making the long drive across PA and need somewhere to get a break from the typical fast food options. The bread is amazing and you can get a very fresh, yummy salad, plus many other items that are cooked in ways that don't leave you feeling weighed down. Holy Russian. We ordered a few items while driving through and I gotta admit, we really enjoyed them. I don't know if I've ever had such authentic Russian food but man was it good. Service was okay. Their English was quite broken and hard to understand but I placed my order and waited longer than expected. As a Native-Alaskan American(we are all created equal by the way) and a Trucker of 30 years, I've developed an outstanding pallet,and I speak from lots of experience ,As I have traveled all over North America. One of the benefits is trying new foods from different countries and experiencing their culinary skills. This has fit that bill to an extent that is delicious beyond my expectations. Came here at the beginning stages of the pandemic. They were only open for take out ! Now...their open for full dining room which is warm and inviting if you have the time...... and take out. One of the things I like is the take out is designed for hot fresh food now,and an option for cold to go,so you can heat it up later. Which is awesome for a person that travels, as myself. So I've learned to get one of each. Today I got my favorite thus far,which is the meatballs and mashed potatoes. Don't be mistaken by the simplicity. The meatballs(two) are more like mini meatloafs of perfection and the mashed are really more of a baked potato. Absolute perfection on both. So I decided to be brave and try something different. Yes...step outside my comfort zone. Got the stuffed cabbage. Yummy yummy in my tummy. Wow. I've had it before as a Polish dish,but this was much better than I expected. Was offered a side of sour cream and garlic. That did it. It paired perfectly with the seasoning of the delicate stuffed cabbage. Will get an extra side of that for my potatoes next time. They are personable and professional here. Also a big lot for RV's and Semi's. I think they start at noon. Great find. Nice change from the S.O.S. This place is like Twin Peaks meets the Umbrella Academy - and it's fantastic! We never would have discovered it if I hadn't been driving on fumes and pulled off on a middle of nowhere exit to fill up. We didn't even think it was open because on a Tuesday at 6pm there were virtually no cars in the lot. Inside the decor is like your grandma's house in the 80's. And they are streaming techno pop music on the huge screen tv. Like who is that even for? Neither the clientel or the two staff people we saw looked like techno pop fans. It did give us something to bop to though. The menu, even the translated pages, was hard to understand but that's okay because the server went through the entire thing, front to back, to explain what each dish was. This was incredibly helpful. We got meatballs and mashed potatoes, which was delicious. The "meatballs" were the size of small burger and they brought us a whole loaf of homemade bread.
