I love this little historic store. I've been several times, as I drive around the island each time I visit and take the road to Hana and then keep going. I'm sad to say that on our most recent trip, that the store has now been closed. I believe they have new owners. I hope they change their mind and are able to reopen this special place, as it has fond memories for me and I believe the store has been there since 1925. Mahalo! read more

Before 7-11, there was the old general store where the local citizenry went to get what they needed. Well, I found one in the most remote part of Maui...and it's worth a stop even to pet the sleepy cat on the front step. Once you hit the Seven Sacred Pools, you can either retrace your drive on the Hana Highway, or throw caution to the wind and take the road less traveled - Highway 31 which takes you on the dry, windy southeastern part of Maui. No waterfalls but often breathtaking views of waves crashing on the rocks below. The challenge is that most of the road is not paved, so you become the human bobblehead for quite a bit of the ride. Unless you did neck workouts at the gym before you left, it can get exhausting, so a moment of respite may be in order since there are so few places to stop along this route. The Kaupo Store is a throwback in time, a wooden structure that would have looked appropriate on "Petticoat Junction" if the folksy sitcom was set in Hawaii. Inside is a general store full of eccentric memorabilia, antique clocks and bottles, and some pretty dusty-looking food on the shelves. You're not likely going to be in the mood to shop for dried goods at this point of the trip. You'll be there to get some ice cream or a beer, or use the outhouse in the back from all the kidney-jiggling you experienced. What's pretty funny is that they keep all their cold stuff in two old refrigerators, so it's like you're at home when you pull out the Haagen-Daaz coffee-and-almond ice cream bar. Except they charge $3.40 for it there. But frankly you'll be so grateful to find the store in the middle of nowhere. And the girl at the counter is a delight. read more

Once you have passed Hui Aloha Church... You will find your self on the part of the map that reads "rental cars are not advised to drive" area. The roads are narrow and should be driven with caution. Probably a five minute drive from the Hui Aloha Church you will read songs along the way that lead you to the Kaupo Store. Its a wooden building- an old time general store filled with many goodies. They have a good selection of packaged cookies, chips, candies, trail mix, ice cream- homemade from the Island to the regular run of the mill Haagen Dazs, water, soda. They also have in the back of the store a great area with handmade Hawaiian Angel Ornaments, neck pillows and Hawaiian Quilts. The front part of the store is decorated with antiques that are a delight to look at- too bad they are not for sale. There is an older lady that is funny and Annie Oakley like :) When we approached I asked if they had a restroom and she said, "Only if you make a donation or purchase something." Whereby I replied, "No problem at all." The restroom is located in the back of the property. Not for the faint of heart as the sign reads "If its yellow let it mellow." LOL. They like to save their water here. We were all done with the road to Hana (beautiful) and had finished setting up our tent at Kipahulu campground when we realized we forgot something: beer! It was 5:20 pm and this was the closest general store. We got in the car -- drove down winding unpaved single-lane roads -- with the Kaupo general store as our destination. I called to make sure they were open and a man answered. He said they just closed, but who is this? I said we were camping down the way and wanted some beer. In a showing of the Aloha spirit, he said he would wait for us to get there. Problem solved. Once we did, we found a quaint throwback to simpler times. Refreshing community / local / family oriented store in the middle of nowhere that truly services the area like an old timey general store. You need it? They got it. If they don't got it? You don't need it. At least not till someone goes to town and you hop in the back of their truck. read more

I'm a biased fan. . . Family to the original builder, Nicholas Soon... So my opinion may be biased a bit... Your mileage may vary. It is a wonderful spot to just get away. Kipahulu isn't far away... Maui is where he chose to retire after all his fame and fortune days were over... AND INTENDED to be buried here. * * * I would expect that his desire for the limelight dwindled down to the important things is life... Evidently, he found those things here on Maui away from all the bright lights and big cities... * * * I also imagine his burial here was intended to bring those who want to visit his final resting place to Maui and experience the tranquility, peace, simplicity, and Spirit of Aloha he witnessed during his final days... * * * My brother and his friends call a bend in the road coming out of Ulupalakua toward Kaupo the "Portal"... It's a place where time jumps back about 80 years... to a simpler time. . . When they come out and pass that point on the way to the valley, they all look at their watches and ask each other what day it is...? In Kaupo, clocks lose their value and every day is Sunday. . . Very cool old general store, stopped here on our way home from Hana, really neat little place, I liked how the had all their candy bars in old fashioned glass containers, the drinks in the fridge in the back were not all that cold, but it looked like the refrig was on it's last legs, they have lots of antiques that are not for sale and a bunch of trinkits, dog's and cats on the porch, seemed like it was still the early 1900's here. read more

This is a pretty cool little store. They had a decent selection of food and drinks as well as souvenirs. There are also working restrooms out back and a mini museum inside the store. Definitely worth a stop. read more

This store is a must see on your trip the long way around Hana. If you are breaking your rental car contract by taking the long way around you will want to stop here to grab a beer and check out the view from the patio. The owners are the sweetest and kindest people so not only is this a stop for some snacks but its good for your soul. They have a pet pig that is super cute and great shopping for your wife. They are Kaupo. I learned Kaupo is its own province :) They are so cool you will want to move there. My wife and I had the greatest time chatting with them and now have one of the best memories of our lives. God Bless the Kaupo Store and their family. Thank you for the awesome time. My husband & I drove the opposite direction of where most people come from when passing through Kaupo. We went from Up Country, then down the backside of Haleakala Crater with a short stop at Kaupo Store before heading to Hana. This was an unexpected stop-we just saw this beautiful old time store with it's sign & decided to stop & visit. It just brought back memories of times past in Old Hawaii. We enjoyed the store & workers there & the antiques & old camera's. Just loved seeing the old stuff they had & ladies in store was more than helpful. The toilets are out in the back but it was very clean-no problems. Nice place to stop & visit!!! read more
