Chocolate New York Egg Cream
Kimberly M.

It's wild I had never been here before! In all my years in NYC, this iconic place and I had not crossed paths. I'm no Pastrami or Corned Beef expert, but wow. The flavor of the meat here hit it out of the park. After being given a sample of each, I went for the fattier and juicy pastrami with kraut and Russian dressing. We chose table service which was perfect. It is much too chaotic in the main dining space. My chocolate egg cream was perfect next to the rich sandwich. I'm not a rye fan, but here it is seedless and mild. Yes, the sandwiches are huge. Yes, they are expensive, but where else can you go to experience over 130 years of tradition and tasty standards like this?

Combo Sandwich - Pastrami & brisket

This place is very busy, so don't do table service, instead just go to the counter for self-service and find a table on your own, especially if you have a large party. We had 10 people in our party and stated we wanted to be split up (4 and 6) to save on time, however, it still took 45 minutes to get a table. Once we sat down and ordered, our food was out in about 15-20 minutes. We tried the pastrami, corn beef, and brisket sandwich. The brisket was the best in our opinion.

After you receive your sandwich, go to the line NEXT TO Cutter #9 to order sides and beverages

Mind blowing! Pastrami Sandwich on Rye. Just order it how it normally comes. All they put on it is a special mustard spread. And that's all you need. The meat is so tender and juicy that it makes up for the fact that it's a pretty simple sandwich. I love it! 8pm on a Saturday night and there's a line down the block. But it moves fast. Once you get inside you choose one of 9 lines to get into. DON'T LOSE YOUR BLUE TICKET or you'll be fined extra dollars. Each line has a meat cutter at it. That's 9 guys cutting meats making sandwiches. If you want side dishes like fries, as well as beverages, then after you receive your sandwich at the counter, get out of there and move to the far left to the line NEXT TO Cutter #9. That's where you order your remaining items. Unfortunately the fries are precooked and cold. Bring your tray of food to any table. You WILL have to sit with others. The other option is to specify the moment you enter the building that you want to wait for a table in the back seating area where there's full service with your own server taking care of you. But then you miss the experience of the Cutter making your sandwich! At the end of your meal you either pay cash at the front of the store, or pay credit card at the back of the store.

Katz's definitely lives up to the hype. My friend had been feening to come here for a long time. So when we came he was more excited than me. But I understand why. And the long lines in there were definitely understandable. But the wait wasn't too long and the servers were generous. I had the pastrami sandwich and he got the combo pastrami and corned beef. It was delicious! And so filling. We could've just got one sandwich and shared and it would've been enough. It was definitely an experience.

A New York classic!!! The long lines typically deter me but I found myself at Katz for a late night snack on a rainy day without any lines! The pastrami was very tasty and well seasoned. It's tender, juicy, and chewy! It really didn't need any additional sauces but they have mustard available. I'm a huge fan of cheese but really didn't need it because the pastrami already stole the show! Love the retro food hall vibes with lots of tables. You line up for a butcher after you get a ticket that records your orders and then pay on your way out. I can see why they have withstood the test of time and how they remain a New York classic!

Having heard all the great things about Katz's Delicatessen it was safe to say I was going to have to check it out. Especially in since I was on a mission to hit the majority of the hot-spots during this New York adventure. STAR #1 - The process is pretty simple: Wait in line (if there is one) to get in, get a ticket, pick a cutter, wait again, nosh on a sample of the meats while the carve up your order. Nothing too complicated here! STAR #2 - I opted for the pastrami. Whoa! This piece of culinary art easily surpassed my expectations for a sandwich. It made me question whether I've ever truly had pastrami before. So yeah, it's damn good STAR #3 - Don't forget the Dr. Brown's to wash it all down. Because what pairs better with a meal at one of the oldest (or at least the most famous) restaurant in America than sipping on one of America's oldest soda brands. Nothing, Literally nothing. It's the partnership your mouth needs. STAR #4 - I really dig the pics of all the patrons over the years. It really puts how iconic Katz's Delicatessen is in perspective. It's a vibe, that's for sure. The only drawback to my experience at Katz's Delicatessen was the two men in the group two ahead of me who tied up the line and ordered about 40 sandwiches. No, I don't envy the small loan they must've taken out to pay for that order. With how busy this place can be I truly wish there was a better way to manage large orders. Can I hold their popularity against them? Absolutely not. I'm glad I got to check out this staple of the Lower East Side. Would I return to Katz's Delicatessen? Yeah, I would. Nosh on New York, nosh on! **PRO TIP: Don't forget to grab a little souvenir from your cullinary adventure! They offer a small assortment of merch. I knew I had to have a tote bag to commemorate my visit.

The hype is real! Probably one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever tasted. Theres a long line but it goes by super quick. Honestly worth the wait! Their potato salad was phenomenal as well. If you're ever in NY, please visit this place.

Tony Y.

A new york trip would be incomplete if you didn't stop by Katz deli once. Honestly, for the price you're paying, you get a pretty hefty sandwich and some history with it. The pastrami here is literally one of the best things you can put in your mouth from new york. I might've went overboard with the potato latkas but i had to try them. Sour cream is the way to go btw, still not convinced of the apple sauce. Wait wasn't too long, due to the number of lines you can stand in. You order first, eat, then pay.

The pastrami was flavorful but probably won't come back. Too much chaotic energy inside with people trying to find a table. Long queue outside and inside.

The iconic Katz's Deli. I've been to my fair share of viral food spots, so I'm familiar with the process. Waiting in line is never much of a problem in the presence of good company. The inside was packed with hundreds of people trying to get their sandwich fix, but it was pretty clean all things considered. When we ordered, we were given samples of the pastrami. It was pretty decent, and I was excited for what was to come. The cutters themselves were fairly dismissive, even after tipping, so I'd say save your money on that unless you're genuinely okay with just donating. Unfortunately, the pastrami itself was served closer to room temperature and wasn't quite the "stacked meat mountain" it had been made out to be. My final verdict is that I probably caught them on a bad day. However, like many visitors, we only have a limited amount of time in the city. It's hard to justify giving places like this a second chance, especially when you're paying a premium tourist price. Ultimately, I think Katz's lacks consistency. Maybe I didn't get them at their best, but based on my experience, I'm proud to say the west coast still has the better pastrami. Edit: Changed my rating after looking at some of the other 5-star reviews. Katz's really dropped the ball with the serving size they provided me with.

Richard S.

I finally made it back to Katz in person. The place just wreaks of such history. The food wasn't exactly spot on this visit. But I'll cut them a little slack, as I've had it shipped in so many times and it's always been great in the past. Be sure and get one of their hard salamis. That stuff has such a condensed flavor...excellent stuff it is!

$33 sandwich. Do not lose your ticket or it's a $50 fine.
John R.

This is an experience, but I don't think I would return. The meat is almost like BBQ, not your typical pastrami on a Ruben that I normally get. This isn't a pressed pastrami, it's the real deal. It is somewhat fatty like a brisket. Their Russian dressing is the best. The bread is spectacularly fresh. Hate the fact, I get my sandwich, then have to go to different lines for my drink or anything else. Sandwich is cold and soggy by then. You really need to research this place before you go. I had no clue their was also a place to sit in the back with table service. The ticket thing is beyond dumb. Worst way to do business ever. I am so glad I tried this though.

Marissa B.

Very busy upon arrival. I was moved to a line but the line was not the correct line for what I wanted to order, so I spent a few minutes waiting here when this wasn't necessary. Ordered a chicken noodle soup and knish. They were fairly good quality. The ambiance is very busy. Felt like I was hurried along while there. I understand they need to run a tight operation with how busy it is, but it just didn't feel very welcoming to me. Will need to try one of the sandwiches next time. I enjoyed seeing the wall decorated with pictures of famous faces who have visited.

Katz's Delicatessen Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Katz's Delicatessen

Does Katz make its own pastrami/ corned beef/ brisket on the premises?

If you mean, slaughtering a fresh animal, no, but I'm sure they get it delivered somewhere else locally. If you mean, cooking it on the spot which I'm now realizing then yes they have a full on kitchen in the back, I'd call them up personally.

Can they vacuum seal the meat by the pound or do they sell vacuum sealed bags of the meats there?

I've never seen vacuum sealed in store but I'd call and ask. When we order online and ship to home it's sealed. If ordering by brisket it's packed on cold ice and must be cooked or refrigerated/frozen upon receipt.

The only thing that I can think about ? Here are the other three that

The

Can I order for 12 people pickup?

Probably a good idea to not call during the lunch or dinner rush.

Is there still outdoor seating? Is it covered?

No outdoor seating that I'm aware of.

Can I buy a small bottle of your pickles? Can't find in New orleans and you have spoiled me . Miami deli are close second!

Katz Deli delivers, you can check online, they have a choice of quart full or half sour pickles available.

Are they open during Passover?

Best to just call them and ask. Go directly to the source for an accurate answer. :). Enjoy! Now, you have me thinking about matzo brei. LOL. Enjoy -whenever you are able to get to Katz's. I loved the pastrami on rye.

Best time for the shortest wait on a weekday? Is the line any shorter at say ... around 11AM or 11:30AM than it is after noon?

There weas no line when I was there at 10:30am on a week day

What is the wait on a Saturday afternoon?

A city block of line but the service is quick so 30-45 minutes to be seated with a sandwich in hand

Is there usually a long line?

Yes, but it moves pretty quick. I think we waited 20 -30 min & it was a long line.

Does this place serve kosher or halal meat?

Yes they do! There is a kosher section on the menu.

What’s the weight of either pastrami or corned beef in their restaurant sandwiches?

It's all hand carved they throw on a pile but don't weigh it.

Do they let you share a sandwich between 2 people?

Yes!

Pastrami is beef or has pork in it?

It's a kosher deli...yeah it's all beef.

Open for Yom Kippur?

I'm not sure , sorry . Most likely though .

Are you open on New Years Day? Please say yes!

Now open 24 hrs on weekends! Monday - Thursday: 8:00 AM - 11:00 PM Open Friday 8:00 AM - Sunday 11:00…

Haven't been to NYC in few years and on my way. How much are the pastrami's these days? Thanks!

Pastrami Sandwich is big enough for 2 to share or 1 very hungry $24.95 3 Meat Platter with pastrami,…

On average, what is the usual wait time for service?

All the answers below are good. The line to get inside on weekends/holidays can be about 30min. Once inside you have 2 options. Sit at tables that are waiter service only or go to counter and order and find a table. Once at counter depending on…

Can I order just a quarter pound of freshly sliced pastrami?

Yes you can. They sell the pastrami by the pound.

Is any of their meat kosher?

No, it is not Kosher. It says (Kosher style) which is NOT kosher.

Did an earlier dinner on a Saturday with a friend at the bar. We got some similar items, some different. The thing I kept the same was my martinis and all three (sour cream and onion, tomato, and espresso) were just as amazing as ever. Food-wise, I stuck mainly to the classics with one new dish: - Pizza rolls: Very good but 3 pizza rolls for $20 felt small to me. I feel like I remember seeing others served more when I've gone in the past, but not completely sure. They're nostalgic and fun, nothing to die for. - Fries: Great as ever, we opted for just one of the sauces (avocado dill). - French Dip: This used to be cut in 3 pieces and now it's 2. Works well with a duo but I do think it's actually a little smaller now than before when I compare photos. - Samoa sundae: Still amazing, still so so worth. It was fun going with a friend who hadn't been before and seeing the joy upon trying the dish! Bar service is friendly as always and they do a decent job moving you along to ensure the necessary turnover without feeling too rushed.

Getting a reservation to this place is next to impossible and only possible if you are one of the first people in line to put your name down and hope a bar seat opens up. The restaurant opens at 5 so I literally lined up at 3 and there were already 3 people ahead of me. But my friend and I were 4th and 5th. We made some friends in line though! So at like 4:30 the hostess came out, took my number and name and said "we'll text if we have a spot." and then...we all just kinda left??? But not even 15 min later I got a text that they would take us and we had to confirm. There are 13 seats at the bar and that's where we were sat. We got some cocktails and apps and then also some dinner. I ordered the sour cream and onion martini which came with a side bar and little ramekin of sour cream onion chips. I ordered the vegetarian chicken parm and we got some asparagus and hand cut fries to share. My friend got the French dip and said it was one of the best sandwiches she's had! I liked my dish but was it worth $30? No. The martinis were $21 which I do think is worth it since they come a side car/refill so it's like 2 drinks. You're definitely paying for the social media hype and the inside is very beautiful and feels like Old New York! Our bartender was fantastic and friendly and gave us some great recommendations. The sour cream and onion martini was good but I liked the tomato martini a lot more! So yea the food and drink and ambiance are great but is it worth trying to get in waiting 1-2 hours? I don't know. But hey! I can say I've tried it now!

Not every plate was a hit, but the standouts were SO good that we'd absolutely return. We made a 6:30 PM Saturday reservation to celebrate our sixth wedding anniversary. I'll admit, the location initially threw me off. It has a somewhat corporate feel, tucked between buildings near the Lincoln Tunnel Expressway on Manhattan's West Side. But once you're there, the buzzing patio and lively atmosphere win you over. Great for date night, dinner with friends, business meals, large groups, or a pre-event meal. A wide age range and a crowd that feels like it's hitting on all cylinders. Bonus points for a thoughtful anniversary card waiting for us when we sat down. Such a sweet touch! We skipped cocktails after a full afternoon of drinking, but more than made up for it with the food. The menu is designed for sharing. What we ordered: * Fattoush salad | 3/5: A creative spin on the classic, topped with pita, thinly sliced Honeycrisp apples, and candied pecans. The apples and especially the pecans overwhelmed the dish for me. I'd love to see more vegetables and fewer sweet toppings. Prefer a traditional fattoush, but this was fine. Need 1/4 the amount of pecans given * Tuna tartare | 1/5: Unfortunately, the one miss of the evening. The description with cucumber, figs, and cardamom sounded incredible, but the dish fell completely flat. The cucumber purée had an almost gel-like texture, and the tuna didn't taste fresh to us. We sent it back. More acidity, spice, and sumac could help, but the freshness and texture were the bigger issues. * Octopus carpaccio | 5/5: STUNNING. I usually gravitate toward a cooked octopus tentacle, but this preparation with fennel absolutely won me over. One of my favorite dishes of the night. * Pita: Thick, soft, and delicious. We went through two baskets! An excellent vehicle for the dips and appetizers, but honestly good enough to enjoy on its own. * Little gems | 3/5: Served with za'atar crumbs and roasted grapes. The grapes initially threw me off, but the combination worked surprisingly well. A creative salad I really enjoyed, but $19 for some leaves, breadcrumb & grapes is pushing it * Manti | 5/5: Little wonton-like dumplings stuffed with spiced beef, served over garlicky labneh with oven-dried tomatoes. Absolutely delicious. A must-order for us. * Crispy latkes | 5/5: Everyone should order these. Perfectly crispy with a lovely thyme finish. An excellent side that deserves its own spotlight. * Charred broccoli: A very generous portion served with cashew harissa that packed some heat. So tasty that I accidentally ate the entire side myself... oops. Bottom line: Zou Zou's is worth a visit for the atmosphere alone, and do need to return to have actual entrees. The tuna tartare was a miss, and the fattoush wasn't my favorite, but the octopus carpaccio, manti, latkes, and broccoli more than made up for it. Add in thoughtful service touches and a lively, versatile setting, and we left happy.
