Katsuya has some of the kindest and most wonderful staff you will ever meet. they provided our Katsu free of charge (following a small food incident which occurred years ago) and this was such a kind gesture which was truly not at all needed. ambiance in the restaurant was really good, I love the large windows looking out onto Richmond Street and the decor was nice inside. I love their honey fries! they're so crispy and slightly sweet and come with the perfect dipping sauce. I think it's a unique dish which is definitely worth trying out! We got carbonara and curry sauces to go with our Katsu. The curry sauce has a really robust flavour profile and is full of all these incredible warm spices, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend getting this sauce. The carbonara sauce was nice as well and really creamy, I just wish it was a TAD bit spicier. I'm not sure how but Katsuya always has the flakiest crispiest Katsu and it is so appreciated. Portion sizes are very generous so you can easily split with friends, or indulge yourself depending on hunger levels. One thing I didn't realize before coming here was that Katsuya sells Japanese FUSION tonkatsu. I assumed it was a just a Japanese Tonkatsu place until we ate here and saw the sign on the outside. My expectations may have been thrown off a little since I didn't realize what Katsuya trying to do. That said, the food was good, but nothing I'd shout on top of the hills for. The food was still decent, so had to still give it four stars. As much as I am not a fan of fusion restaurants, my favorite was the carbonara katsu. It was like dipping your katsu into an Italian seafood alfredo sauce, with a decent amount of seafood and bacon in it. The pair of this fusion was delightful and I enjoyed eating this one the most. The katsu itself had a nice light, crispy, airy batter, and the pork (you can choose your type of meat) was tender. It was light, yet deep fried, so super oily and felt like a heavy meal. My second favorite was the curry katsu. A good curry sauce with your katsu, typical to what I've gotten at other Japanese restaurants, and exactly what I would expect. It had a slight spice to it. The original katsu I wasn't too much of a fan of. The sauce was a little too buttery for me. Buttery and sweet. I'd come back for the carbonara katsu again for a dip into this italian/japanese fusion. read more

Great selection of katsu to make a classic dish interesting. Our family tried curry katsu, original katsu, and carbonara katsu - all pork loin katsu. It's a small but chic restaurant. The katsu itself is fried to a nice, flaky perfection, and the meat is fairly tender. The sauces are interesting - the original is a tangy, sweet/salty sauce that is a good in-between for those who don't want it too sweet or too savory. The carbonara is definitely an italian-japanese fusion that gives you a comfort-food feel if you like. And finally, the curry katsu is a classic taste that is just a hint of spicy and pretty close to the classi katsu curry that you would expect. Overall, great classic favorite with a twist! read more

So I had this amazing trip planned to Japan in 2020. Then....well...you know. Until that dream becomes a reality, I find myself often watching YouTube videos of all the amazing food I'd get to eat there - one dish being katsu - a "Japanese dish consisting of a piece of meat, usually chicken, pork or vegetable, covered in bread crumbs, fried, then usually cut into strips and eaten with a sauce". I've never had katsu before and I thought I'd hold off to try the real authentic thing in Japan - but I just had to try Katsuya. We ordered takeout and I ordered the curry katsu and my partner ordered the regular katsu, both with pork. Takeout is a gamble sometimes but Katsuya prepared everything in a tray that keeps the items separate. The fried pork wasn't soggy and neither was the slaw. The curry sauce sort of tasted like poutine gravy with curry in it - but you wont see me complaining! It was thick and tasty. The regular sauce was nutty and sweet - very good. I mean, take this review for what it is - I'm no expert - but I truly enjoyed my meal. I devoured it! While I am still in London, longing of my trip around the world, I will continue to visit Katsuya for a delicious Japanese meal. read more

Katsuya is on Richmond Row. I recently tried a place with Katsu in the name, also on Richmond Row. The first place was unintentional, as I meant to order from Katsuya. Now that I have, I'm glad that I know which is which! I wasn't yet feeling confident enough to dine in, so I picked up take-out for two. The order was ready quickly, and at the promised time. Bonus: Katsuya had a relay going with all their other locations. If you ordered from Location A on any of three days, you got 30% off the chicken katsu meal (only the regular chicken katsu, none of the specialty options). That means that if you are particularly mobile and really like their food, then you could visit each location on their designated relay days to get a great deal! Not sure how often they run this relay, but it's such a great idea that I highly recommend that they do it every month. Seating options include tables and one banquette. Nice décor, so I would happily dine in when the world is in better shape. Diners have a choice of pork or chicken katsu. All the meals include miso soup, white rice, cabbage slaw, pickled daikon and a very large piece of katsu in a partitioned tray so that the foods don't mix. Plan on leftovers. My guest and I liked everything; I'm sure that it would be even better served hot in the resto. Both of us have extensive allergies and intolerances, which were accommodated. Very happy that I ordered from the right resto, happy with our selections and looking forward to ordering from Katsuya again, whether at this location or another one. Run the yummy relay! read more

Everything I've gotten from here has been fantastic. They are generous with the powder on the honey butter fries (super tasty but could possibly pass off as dessert). The takoyaki has a unique texture because it is breaded and the sauces are flavourful. The crab croquettes are rich and creamy and filled with cheese. The honeycomb fish katsu is slightly spicy and the fish is flaky. Massive portion as well. The rice and cabbage slaw are average. The cream carbonara is rich but very delicious. The fried shrimp is juicy and not too oily. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the fried chicken appetiser as some pieces were quite dry and it lacked flavour. The wasabi mayo it came with was decent and saved the dish. Highly recommend this place. They have a location in Vancouver too, and that one has a sweet potato cheese katsu which sounds very tempting. read more
