I stopped in for the first time today as I noticed that the old Dave's Bistro was gone and Katie's Kitchen has taken its place. The atmosphere is pretty much the same as it was previously with the exception that they have now opened the shades to let the light in which is nice. The menu has a wide select of breakfast items and also a good variety of salads and sandwiches. The skillets are good with lots of fresh ingredients and the prices are pretty reasonable. Family managed and the service was very good. When I asked the lady at the register if she was Katie, she said "no, I am her mom" and then pointed out Katie who said "hi" as she was walking by with someones order. My first impression was a nice clean place to eat with good food and great service at a reasonable price. I hope they make it as I am sure to be a regular customer. read more

I don't know why you WOULDN'T give Katie's Kitchen a 5 star review!! The food is always really great, the price is right, and the portions are large and in charge. The breakfast specials menu is fabulous; I almost always order one of their new creations. And for sure, if you come for lunch or dinner, GET A SOUP WITH YOUR MEAL. The soups are always to die for. Sundays can be busy but the waiting time is almost never as long as they tell you. Friday nights are fun and BYOB... hardly anyone has BYOB in the burbs, so i'm glad they jumped on that train. Also, if you come on a friday night, get the coconut shrimp. Crazy good. I like being seated and finding out that Katie, herself, is actually going to be the server at my table. My waitress was super friendly and attentive and the french toast I ordered was delish! We also had the meat lovers skillet which was also great. I have been to Katie's just once and found it to be a great place for breakfast! The food was hot and fresh and the service was perfect. Great place to grab a bite. The pancakes nearly melted in my mouth...yum! Oh, and the sausage was excellent! The restaurant was very busy with a varied population of family's, couples and singles. Katie's Kitchen This is one of our FAVORITE places to go for breakfast or brunch. everything is absolutely delicious, the servers are great, and Katie herself is so involved and makes the place an awesome community partner. I had a friend whose young son loved the pancakes there, and when he passed away she was kind enough to name the buttermilk pancakes after him that day when I brought his Mom and sister there. Every table had his name and the name of his pancakes...it was amazing and meant so much to them at this time they were missing him so much. My wife and I have been here twice in the last month and both occasions we walked away with big smiles on our faces because of the delicious food. First experience: May 23 To start, they gave us mini-pistachio muffins that were great. a simple bite to whet the appetite. Subtle nut flavor. Very moist and fresh. Wife: Veggie Nest Me: Cinnamon Roll french toast. The Nest is a blanket of hash brown that swallow your veggies and eggs (or meat if you so choose). This dish is what contributes to american obesity - it was so large and delicious, we ate as much as we could before we couldn't eat anymore. The hash browns are cooked lightly, not over fried and hard. The eggs and veggies are cooked nicely as well. The cinnamon roll french toast is a nice twist on french toast - bear in mind - this kind of dish is also what America is overweight, but who can blame us: IT WAS DELICIOUS. Homemade cinnamon roll, lightly battered in an egg wash and fried on a pan. Second experience: May 31 (no pistachio muffins this time. Boo) Wife: peach-banana baked oatmeal Me: monthly special: very berry waffle (half strawberry waffle, half blueberry waffle, topped with fresh blueberries and strawberries). When they first brought my breakfast out, I was a little disappointed. I thought the waffle was just a plain waffle with berries as a topping. Wow was I in for a treat. The fruity batter is just perfect. You don't get chunks of fruit, but a nice balanced flavor of strawberry or blueberry depending on which side of the waffle you're eating. The berries on top were really just a luxury. My wife's Peach-banana baked oatmeal was also incredible. Soft and gooey oatmeal, with warm peaches and bananas with a hint of brown sugar crumbles (I think). Warm fruit may not be for everyone, but it was definitely for us that morning. Also - this bowl of oatmeal was more like a swamp of oatmeal. It came in a large soup bowl, not your typical small bowl of oatmeal you would get at maybe Eggsperience of Egg Harbor. All in all, Katie's Kitchen serves up some really unique dishes for breakfast and I look forward to the next trip to try something new delicious. I drove up here and I wanted to turn around so fast but I was already there so I had to go in. I was very surprised at how it looked inside because it was a lot nicer than what I had initially thought. The hostess took us to our seats which was a booth with a tear on the cushion that kind of made it uncomfortable for me to sit. I'd understand if the restaurant was busy but there was one server and she sat me in a broken chair. Oh well, on to the food! I like the fact that they gave me a blueberry chocolate chip muffin to start. That was very delicious. The menu had your pancakes, your crepes, french toast, skillets, and eggs benedict. I had the huevos rancheros benedict and comes with steak, salsa, avacados, egg, on a english muffin. It was quite delicious. The potatoes it came with were just okay to me. I've heard that how you spend your New Year's day is indicative of how you will spend your year. If that's the case then 2014 will include a lot of coffee, good breakfast, and chatting with good friends. That also means it will include a lot of time at the gym and lots of snow (I can already say that is true). We were seated immediately in a great little booth. The coffee came quickly and the refills didn't stop. Good thing I stopped counting how many cups I drank because I think I went a little overboard. I ordered the Farmer Scrambler with toast and it was very good. There was plenty of food and I couldn't even finish all of the dish. What a difference checking reviews around you makes. With a rare day to ourselves, my wife and I were on a hunt for nearby breakfast that wasn't a chain. Enter stage right: Katie's Kitchen. Sure, we met Katie and she was a gem. But her kitchen holds a cavern of gems. The menu is filled with surprise after surprise of breakfast delights. And I don't mean delights like, "they had PANCAKES!" I mean delights in the sense that she or the kitchen put thought into a myriad of delicious-sounding meals. At the end of both our meals, we were too full to finish but tried to will our bodies to eat our plates clean. Visually - you'll feel like you're in a Greek restaurant within a strip mall. But...images are a tricky beast. So many words when the simple point is - go eat here. I want to find a reason to go out of my way to go back here. You should too. read more

This is one of those places that I drive by a lot and kept telling myself that I needed to try it - well, I finally did. And it did NOT disappoint! I ordered a Denver Omelette and it was fantastic. Fresh ingredients and a huge fluffy omelette. Makes me wonder why more restaurants don't put their eggs for omelettes through a mixmaster, the presentation is so much better. We walked in and the "hostess" said, "two and a high chair?" I replied "just two and a stroller." The hostess informed me that they don't have a spot for a stroller and could give me a high chair. I explained that my son is only 5 months and can not hold himself up in a highchair. She said this is the lunch rush and we can not have a stroller in the dining room. She said we could flip the high chair over and you could put the car seat on top. Number 1 this is extremely dangerous and there are usually warning stickers on the high chair advising against this. Number 2 he wasn't even in a car seat.. he was in a stroller. I turned to my sister and we both just looked at each other and said "okay.. I guess we will just leave then?" The hostess then went to "look for a spot" and found a table. She removed a chair and stormed off. No "enjoy your meal" or another word. I tucked the stroller in to the table. I have no idea why this was such a big deal? What if a customer is in a wheel chair? We felt extremely unwelcome because we had a baby. This has never happened at any other restaurant I've been to before. Her demeanor and tone were so off putting. I have no idea why you would choose this woman to great and welcome customers.. because she did the exact opposite. I wish we did just leave. Food and service were mediocre. Well let's just say I have a new favorite easy going yet delicious brunch place in the area and this is it. Good coffee (a must for me), and good choices: crepes, omelets, scramblers, oven pancakes, breakfast sandwiches.... The only downside if that's what you are looking for: no alcohol license but you can bring your own. I liked the fact that you can customize with either egg beater or egg white for a healthier version. Our table ordered a feta veggie scrambler with egg white which was really good and the brunch crepe that came with a potato pancake, really good as well. Will definetely go back. read more

I have been hearing about this place from my girlfriend for a long time now, so this morning we decided to try it. When we were walking up to the front door we look down and see a sticker that says "People on Yelp Love Us!" The inside of the restaurant is very charming. Nice booths, tables, and even a fire place! The restaurant is a good size inside. For breakfast I was torn between the steak and portabella nest or the Italian nest. Eventually I couldn't resist the steak and portabella nest with a side of pancakes. After a very short time (less than 15 min) the food came out. Laying on my plate was an omelet with mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and gooey cheese covered by a layer of crispy hash browns. Next to the nest was a skirt steak. And finally a plate with 2 pancakes. First of all the steak was very tender and moist, just to my liking. I liked to mix the omelet with the hash browns and finally with the steak. The pancakes were also very good. All together the food was amazing! I cannot wait to come back here many many times! read more

Came here for brunch on a Saturday early afternoon. No waiting, yay! The hostess at the front is very kind. Our waitress was okay. I ordered a skillet which consisted of mushrooms, crispy bacon, onions, sunny side upeggs, and potatoes. It came with a side of pancakes or toast (I asked for pancakes). My skillet was just okay...a little below average for my liking. There' were a lot of crispy bacons. I didn't mind that but some parts taste burnt. The portabello mushrooms were diced so I couldn't eat much of it and there weren't much. The overall taste was just okay. Could be better. Pancakes was eh.... My husband ordered the country scrambler. It was covered in cheese. If you like cheese you should order this dish. But for him, he was a bit disappointed because he had to pull most of the cheese out of the dish. read more

Have dined at Katie's several times and always enjoyed it. Not today. The service was snail paced and my food arrived cold. Not just warm. Cold. Eggs and pancakes are not appealing when cold. It took quite a while to locate our waitress who blamed it on the kitchen not paging her when my food was ready. I received a piping hot replacement, although not until my dining partner was almost finished with his meal. Upon paying our bill, we were asked the requisite "how was everything?" When informed about the slow service and cold food, the response received was, "Sorry. I hope we'll do better next time" . We won't know about that because we won't be back. Katie's may have some tasty food, but if they can't serve it promptly and pay more attention to customer service, we have other dining choices. Bye, Katie's. read more

For all the lost souls that go for breakfast alot. Going from place to place, eating the same 4-5 things from the "same menu - different restaurant" rut........ YOU HAVE FOUND NIRVANA!!!! The menu rules. There are UNIQUE combinations in omelets, skillets, pancakes, waffles that sound great, but too many to try in 2-3 trips. Apple pancake takes 20 minutes , well worth the wait, (Apples and brown sugar gooey bliss ) The skirt steak was great! Will have to make an effort to try everything on menu. One evening my husband brought me home a cupcake from Katie's as a 'peace offering' (he knows the way to my heart for sure). Hands down, some of the best cupcakes I've ever had. They are as big as your head, just warning you. Perfect cake to frosting ratio. The cake is suuuper moist, and I hate the word moist, but I must use it this time! The 3 flavors we've tried so far - german chocolate, carrot (my favorite!), and red velvet. This is love. read more

Don't judge restaurant by it's appearance. I was confused when my family pulled up. This, this is the place? It's located in a sort of strip mall. But don't let that stop you. The portions are huge! Service was fine, the food even better, and the value was good. Had the meat lover's skillet.... great quality and too much to finish! Went here for lunch and surprisingly it is very good. It was a tossup for Katies Kitchen or Elly's and I honestly think that Katie's Kitchen is way better. Overall the menu contains more items that I could see myself getting. Last time I went I ordered the Southwest Chicken Panini and it was really good. The menu does lean towards more of the breakfast side but the other items they have make up for it. Overall a well kept friendly place that I will return to. read more

I just wanted a very light lunch so I got the cup of soup and half sandwich. The chicken salad was great, no weird stuff in it, on marble rye. I find it odd that they automatically toast it. The soup was the thickest cream soup I'd ever seen. It almost looked like a pure roux. It was in a generous cup and perfectly cut up asparagus was perfectly cooked. What made me wonder if anything could be wrong ended up just right. I had plenty of time to look around at what others ordered. Salads are huge, one was a shrimp and scallop on a corn salsa, that looked to die for. This place is one of those try everything ones. It's in a great location, on a busy corner in a strip mall. While the restaurant is in need of a revamp as far as decor goes, the food is pretty good! Man I sure do love my breakfast potatoes! And lucky me that Katie sure cooks them up just right. While they may not beat the Chicago restaurant Toast in a hashbrown face-off, Katie's potatoes are still delicious. No complaints with service either; our waiter was friendly enough and attentive. Ok, so warning to those coming from the west on wolf road. You will not see a sign for this place. It's almost as if it doesn't exist, and the magically when you turn around because you have gone to far THERE IT IS! Ok though, this places was pretty dag nabbit good. My friend and I used it as a half way point between Chicago and Schaumburg to meet for brunch. The food was very good. The hash browns a re made from red potato's and us Irish folk LOVE red potato's. So anything you make with them is awesome. The waiter was really nice and he never rushed us even though we were one of "those" people who sat and talked and consumed all their coffee before finally leaving. really nice place read more

A great place to go for dinner, or to host a breakfast event. Reviewing on today's lunch with family. Eight of us enjoyed a time of good food and conversation after church. Took a few minutes to wait for a table, but not bad - though I've seen quite a line at times. The service was excellent, with someone almost always nearby when we needed something. Had to seek out a server once or twice, but only for a minute or so. The food was very good! I ordered the turkey burger since it sounded interesting and a bit different, and upgraded to sweet potato fries. The portion size was fairly small for the burger, but the flavor was great! The sweet potato fries were also very good. Most people seemed to enjoy their meal, and none seemed to have issues with them. The prices are good for the food you get, and the atmosphere is comfortable, if not exciting or trendy. As far as groups, I join the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce here every first Friday, and they do an amazing job! There are often 20-30 of us, and they serve a great buffet with eggs, hash browns, fresh fruit and some baked items. A great variety and always fresh. The service is also good, with the plates taken away almost as soon as you're done eating. Mostly a breakfast / lunch place, but they started serving dinner some evenings as well. I haven't yet tried their dinner, so can't offer an opinion on it at this time. ;) read more

Pretty restaurant bad service . I ordered the veggie wrap . Our waitress came to our table not once after the food was delivered to check if we needed anything . I thought she was coming right back to give us an other place setting . When she place down our food she never returned but to give us the check . Food was average and very oily! When went to pay and the the lady at the register didn't ask how our meal was didn't even make eye contact . There is a lack of breakfast restaurants in Des plaines even Mt.Prospect . I think this why people get excited when a new one opens . When I go out to eat I expect friendly staff and excellent customer service and good food . With at least one healthy option on the menu .
