TK Maxx is the British equivalent of TJ Maxx in the United States. Like every other TJ or TK Maxx,…read moreyou have to have time to browse for hidden gems. On the day we went, the store wasn't very organized and the lines were long. However, if you're flying in and leave something, this is the place you go to find anything you may need while in London. I was a bit disappointed, as this seems like a nice area of town and I expected to see more high-end merchandise. This store has the same items as every other similar store in the US and the ones I've visited in other countries. The canned drinks near the registers are cheaper than restaurants and corner stores, so we got a few for our walk back to the hotel.

Having Winners being my favorite in Canada, I was elated to realize the company is in the UK also. So I did exactly what I do best and went into the shop to help settle into my new home. Did the most part, there's a huge selection of bathroom supplies. Literally 1/5th of the store. Shampoos, conditioners, body care, makeup. The whole nine. You'll surely find something. Clothing on the other hand is really a depressing thought. I've been here 4 times now and already I haven't found a single clothing article worth a second glare. Maybe is the pandemic that's cause everything to run dry, but it was quite a disappointing couple of experiences. The staff are super helpful and pretty much willing to accommodate any way they can. Some of the employees do have staring eyes (for some random reason. At least be sure to blink) But oh well.

I think I can confidently say Harrods is the best store on earth. The building alone is…read moreextraordinary, occupying its corner of Knightsbridge with the scale and permanence of a London landmark. Inside, floor after floor unfolds into fashion, jewelry, food, technology, and nearly anything else someone could conceivably want to buy. It is unapologetically excessive, but that ambition is exactly what makes it so much fun. What surprises me most is how pleasant Harrods can feel despite all that luxury. My wife and I once looked at diamonds here, fully aware we were surrounded by merchandise operating in another financial universe, and the staff could not have been nicer. They answered our questions, treated us seriously, and never made the interaction feel slimy or transactional. For a place this fancy, the warmth was striking. Another visit produced one of those purchases that becomes attached to a place. My wife bought a pair of Gucci loafers here, a significant purchase for us, and she ended up wearing them constantly. I still associate those shoes with London and the excitement of buying something special at Harrods rather than ordering it online. The Food Halls create the same sense of occasion, with spectacular rooms and counters worth exploring even when you are not hungry. Personally, my favorite territory is the Fifth Floor, especially the technology. On my last visit, the running selection nearby included the largest and newest collection of On shoes I had ever seen, as though Roger Federer and the Swiss president had stopped by between Wimbledon matches for a glow-up. They also had a state-of-the-art Sony television that I remember being around 80 inches and roughly £100,000, showing Gran Turismo on the newest PlayStation at the time. The image was so absurdly good it practically melted my face. Nearby sat a Samsung or LG machine the size of a wardrobe that steamed, refreshed, and cleaned clothing, the kind of absurdly futuristic appliance that felt straight out of James Bond. That is Harrods in miniature: the biggest, newest, and best versions of things you already know, plus things you did not know existed. For someone fascinated by retail, brands, and consumer behavior, the entire building is basically a history museum of capitalism still operating at full speed. Even the people-watching is incredible, with an unusually diverse international crowd making Knightsbridge feel like a crossroads of wealth, fashion, tourism, and London life. Historically, that idea runs much deeper than the current merchandise. Harrods has occupied Knightsbridge since the 19th century, and its famous pet department once sold exotic animals, including lions. Someday I would love to take a proper historical tour with someone who knows the building, the Harrod family, and the strange commercial history packed into these rooms. The merchandise changes, but Harrods seems to have spent generations asking the same question: what is the most remarkable thing in the world that someone might conceivably want to buy? Ultimately, what impresses me is how gracefully Harrods carries all this excess. Extreme luxury can easily become vulgar, plastic, and gluttonous, yet Harrods reflects something England does exceptionally well: celebrating tradition, design, and innovation at the same time. The grandeur is enormous without becoming tasteless, and during the holidays especially, the building can feel genuinely magical. If you are visiting London, go at least once, even if you have absolutely no intention of buying anything.

If you are in London you have to make a stop and even get yourself a souvenir. While visiting we decided to get lunch on the first floor. It was a little expensive but worth the experience. I am not local (American) but I have lived in London as a young poor 20 something. Primark was a Godsend for me. It's also really interesting now that they have expanded into the states (although not where I live) to come back and see how it has changed. When I lived here and had no money this was my go to for anything trendy, or needed. When I moved back to America quite unexpectedly I went there to stock up on inexpensive suitcases to pack up my life and carry back across the world. Any fast fashion or trendy items, this was my go to. Needed something for my home that didn't need to be high quality, Primark. I got a job at AllSaints a few blocks away and we were supposed to wear their clothes exclusively, but we only got a 60% discount (that's a big discount but still not inexpensive for a college kid) so I got a lot of my work shoes here and they never noticed. Now that I visit as a tourist, it's my go to for things like I need an umbrella that I can leave behind when I go home, or it's raining and I didn't bring my raincoat with me today...or it's colder than what I planned for on this trip so let me stop by and grab a few pieces of layering clothes or a coat. The Disney selection makes me wonder why there isn't a Primark in Orlando (because they get very unique Disney licensed items). If you don't have a big budget or are in need of souvenirs, I also recommend Primark. But if you're looking for a luxury experience, this isn't for you. If you're anti fast fashion, please just skip this. It's busy and loud and sort of a cattle call at the till, but it's great novelty spot. The layout has shed over the years bit it's still a great spot for cheep gifts, replacing broken or lost items and getting an unexpected suitcase for any souvenirs if you are a tourist (my favorite suitcase going on 11 years was £25 from here & yes we got another this most recent trip) 3 stars because I've definitely had some weird experience here over the years but generally if you go in knowing what it is and what to expect, it won't disappoint you.

Of course being a shopper I had to inquire. They were Fortnum & Mason bags. Of course this was our next stop. As we were perusing the aisles for a good strong breakfast tea we were approached by a tall energetic man who offered to assist us......and assist was an understatement. John B in the red coat gave us THE greatest experience ever in Fortnum & Mason and London. He gave us some history of the store and introduced us to every level of the store. I have to acknowledge each and every person I encountered on this day because you all made it a true London experience and I am forever grateful. John B thank you for your tea knowledge and enthusiasm and as a result, I came for one box of tea and left with three boxes of tea, and a canister of tea. To the beautiful young lady who sold me the box of delicious candy, and was told that great things were coming her way. We then ventured to household items and there was a great presentation and we were convinced we needed the cherry liquor which is delicious. To the young man in the alcohol section, you did a fabulous job describing the beverages and we left with a bottle of pink gin. John B returned and introduced us to the champagne bar and I purchased two bottles of champagne. Again thank you thank you and thank you again for a wonderful experience for us during our travel.
