I am obsessed with their Chicken Tikka Masala! I come from a very Indian-populated city with really good Indian food so I was skeptical when the waitress said they had a unique recipe. It was extremely buttery and savory. The chicken was tender and delicious. Their naan is decent but the curry makes it so much better. Honestly this is probably the best Chicken Tikka Masala I've ever had. In my opinion, the option to make it a meal (with side dishes) isn't worth it. Just order it ala carte. We ordered a chicken tikka masala, dal makhani, and two rice orders. They left out one rice, and the leftover one wasn't enough for even one dish. While the heat level matched what was advertised, the flavor was severely lacking, almost as if they literally water down the food. The tikka masala was clearly not tandoori chicken, as authentic CTM should be. The flavor felt like store bought jarred sauce. The dal makhani was not creamy in the slightest, and was lacking any kidney beans. It only had a few lentils, and had huge pieces of tomato that tasted old. It seems like they purposely skimp on more expensive ingredients while giving small portion sizes and charging exorbitant prices. It lacks authenticity. This was really disappointing and I can say this is not a good representation of Desi food, being a Desi myself. I hate to leave such a scathing review but if you can't take the heat, then get out of the kitchen. read more

Really enjoyed this place! They have a reasonable meal deal which comes with an appetizer of vegetable samosas and pakoras, chicken tikka entree, naan, vegetable curry, and rice! All of this was around 30 bucks. It was enough for two people, and filled myself and my boyfriend up. The flavor of the chicken tikka was really great, and I also enjoyed the vegetable curry a lot more than I thought I would. The naan was tender and buttery, and I liked the pakoras and samosas. The chicken was a tad on the dry side, but I do think it had to do with the time of day it was when I ordered. Overall, the Indian food here tasted homemade and very fresh! Located around downtown Davis, it's in a pretty poppin area. I came on a Thursday afternoon lookin for some grub on the way back from the bay. Upon walking in, there were booths to the right with dimly lit dining areas. Service wasn't horrible but it wasn't great seeing that the waiters essentially waited out of sight. The lunch buffet cost about $10.50 each and had the normal get-up self-serve format. Some of the chicken was dry, the naan out and not the freshest, but the flavors of the food & curries weren't too bad. They had maybe two vegetarian options and not all the choices that in used to having at an Indian buffet. Went here for dinner tonight after the football game. We ordered many appetizers, which are pretty good. The service was a pretty good also. However when we got to the dinner it was fairly bad. We ordered the butter chicken and the kofta with garlic naan. These dishes tasted very sweet, like they had sugar added to them. The sweetness made these dishes not eatable. Fantastic hole in the wall Nepalese/Indian spot. The food here is really quite good. The vegetable samosas were spot on. Ordered the Mutter Paneer and Lamb Tikka Masala, both were pretty phenomenal. The Mutter Paneer wins on the flavor of the sauce, but the lamb was so tender and juicy that it almost didn't even need anything else with it. Their goat cheese naan is decadently tasty--a bit overkill if you're using it to scoop up your main dish if you ask me, but I could just sit and eat it by itself and be happy. The only somewhat disappointing thing we had was the Paneer Pakora appetizer. It was a bit bland and overfried, which is unfortunate because the paneer in the Mutter Paneer did not let down. The place is a tad divey and certain parts had an unfortunate cleaning supply aroma, but I didn't mind and something about it reminded me of my experience eating at restaurants in India. Service was a little bit slow, though they brought the food out quickly after ordering (getting their attention proved challenging). The portions are good and the prices very reasonable. I've had their plates at the farmer's market many times and am always pleased, but their takeout and delivery was exceptional! We rarely come to beautiful Malahide but have family nearby, and we chose Kathmandu Kitchen because our neighbors back in the States are Nepalese. Well! A few bites into the starter my husband whispered "This may be the best meal I ever had," and we were off. Despite its slightly undignified location shoulder-to-shoulder with a petrol station, Kathmandu Kitchen is beautiful: vintage but updated in the warmest way, and clean, clean, clean. A colorful fish tank, lovely wallpaper and curtains, immaculate moldings and cabinets--we sat in the front room where we could see sailboat masts bobbing and the Malahide street scenes unfolding in total comfort. The waitstaff was welcoming and warm and efficient; long-time patrons came in next to us and were friendly and fun. But... the food! Wow! We had the mixed starter for two--chicken, prawns, sausage in a spicy sauce and it was amazing. For main we had monkfish and lamb and didn't so much share as snatch from each others' plate--absolutely spectack. Garlic naan and basmati rice and we were just delighted with everything. While I love the flavors, I can't usually handle the hot spices so I really appreciate that they offer you mild versions of their delicious dishes. My very favorite is the chicken tikka masala. Make sure you get the naan to enjoy it with. Another favorite is the mango lassi. My go to place for vegan and gf friendly buffet for lunch with girlfriends on the weekends! I've always had good luck their yummy, healthy, vegan/vegetarian food during their lunch buffet and from their regular menu. A delicious green salad with English cucumbers, tomatoes, and mint chutney, veggie pakora with my own sweet n spicy chutney creation, basmati rice, and/or vegetable biryani are regular lunch plate guests. The veggie entrees vary from chana masala, squash curry, eggplant curry, mixed vegetables, and so on. It's such a great deal for so much food. They even have the lunch buffet on weekends! They especially cater to the "broke and starving" college kids trying to make their way through school, and I'll happily jump on that train with their reasonable prices and welcoming happy hour with pretty good drink and appetizer specials. Someone named Leslie mentioned last year that Kathmandu is 'no longer a buffet.' Disheartened, I called and they did say that they still are a buffet! Joy! I went today with my existing cow orkers and they all participated in the buffet. I'm assuming Leslie must have encountered them on a bad day as their buffet is still in operation. So why did I give this place 5 stars? They have the best Indian buffet in Davis that I've ever had! Granted, it's also the only Indian buffet in Davis that I've ever had, but that's beside the point. Just "okay." I've been to this place for both dinner service and the buffet. Dinner service is world's better! I went during Whole Earth and saw that the buffet was on offer. After being awkwardly shown a seat I got a few items. Nothing was clearly marked in terms of ingredients, and I was reasonably certain my yellow veggie curry had milk in it. I'm a vegan by dietary choice so a small slip of dairy isn't the end of the world, but someone with allergies may have a problem. I'm a HUGE fan of Indian food and I've tried most of the places in Davis - Kathmandu definitely ranks the highest. I recommend coming for dinner - and check groupon they have a $10 coupon worth $20 for two people, and a $20 worth $40 for parties greater than two. Either way it's a great deal for delicious food! I ordered the chicken tikka masala thali style (comes with rice, naan, and a small portion of dal, veggie curry, and yogurt dip) ~$15.99. Although I like the idea of the thali style because it gives you samples of other popular dishes, I recommend just ordering the dish and adding naan and rice on the side. The portions were smaller on the thali and we had extra stuff we didn't really want. My second dish was the Vegetable Korma! The cashew cream base was divine!!! Definitely a new favorite! I've been a vegan living in Davis for 6 years now and this is by far my favorite vegan-friendly dinner place in Davis! The outside looks like a little hole in the wall, but the inside is beautifully decorated and feels upscale. The service can be a hit or miss during a busy dinner rush, but most of the time they are very friendly and always have good recommendations of what to order. Come during Happy Hour (3-6pm everyday) for a less crowded dinner and to save some money on drinks. $3 tap beers (they have Berryessa IPA!) I almost always get the Saag and Tofu (made Vegan, with no Paneer) and a side of Alu Paratha (flat bread filled with potatoes, made Vegan when you ask for no butter on top). The Okra (Bhindi Masala) is also really really tasty too! I would suggest getting the entrees a la carte and ordering a side of rice or naan to go with it. That usually ends up being cheaper than doing the $3.50 extra to make it a meal, where they give you less of your entree for some non-rememberable sides. The veggie pakoras and momos are also really tasty. I'm not a big fan of their samosas, but I'm not really a samosa person. The saag and tofu and $3 Berryessa beers definitely keeps me coming back at least once a month! read more

In the competitive Downtown Davis of places to eat, this offers excellent prices for curry based buffet style Indian food. The interior is very dark and cool providing an excellent shelter on a hot Davis Summer day. The decor's not all that interesting but the environments comfortably social and this is an excellent place to eat if you in a large group. The buffet offers some basic rice pudding dessert with chopped canteloupes, a soaked sweetened donut hole of some sort (sweet but tasty) a basic salad, cucumbers, white and brown rice, various types of chicken (tandoori, curry, and a few others), curry lamb, lentil soup and a bunch of other items. All in all, everything's edible and tastes pretty good. Nothing super memorable, but I enjoyed myself. For $9.95, the price is very good. Would eat here again. The performance was entertaining and added to the ambiance of the place. The taste of the food was average. First time trying Indian food and Yelp lead me to this place. At first while looking at the outside at the front entrance you would walk right past it. Which I have a few times bar hopping. The inside of the restaurant is so nice and clean. My friend and I were welcomed graciously and seated. Our lovely hostess informed us that it was happy hour which include well drinks, PBR, margaritas, $2 off cocktails, and appetizers We ordered the Himalayan appetizer platter(Vegetarian sampler platter including pakoras, samosas, momos, and naan bread). The bread(naan) was so warm, fresh, and good. Dipped it in the four different sauces provided. She was very informative about each dish and suggested a few of her favorites. I ordered the lamb mushroom, free range lamb and mushrooms stir-fried with himalayan herbs and spices, balsamic rice. I was really impressed with all the fusion of spices and vegetables. The following vegetarian review is from a Punjabi girl with good taste: I ordered delivery of these items: Malai Kofta Paneer Tikka Masala Garlic Cilantro Naan I ordered midday and only waited abt 40 minutes tops. I was excited to dig right in after receiving my order. The malai kofta was delicious- vegetarians this is what you need to order. The paneer tikka masala was bland and chewy, truly a waste of $13. Though I am aware that sometimes paneer can become chewy from being overheated (as may have been caused by the plastic delivery container), theres no excuse for it being bland :( I could've gotten a sandwich if I wanted that. I chose the spicy option on both entrees and am not sure if they didn't notice or if they're catering to a "mainstream" crowd. The naan was also pretty bad. It was very chewy and soggy. I suspect this was because it was wrapped in foil and delivered (because otherwise wtf) Next time I will go in and get the malai kofta and garlic naan, hoping that the naan will be fresh and slightly crispy with a bread-y inside. :) read more

Kathmandizee is definitely one of the best spots for lunch or dinner in Davis. This place consistently throws down good food, be it from their lunch buffet or their incredible dinner selection. The lunch buffet is always on point with a good variety. The service is usually good, but it can get spotty sometimes. I had one of the most impressive meals in Davis here, and that's why I'm going with a solid 5 stars here. The Kitchen Special is a rack of lamb in spinach curry. It is one of the best Indian dishes I've ever had. I really didn't think all of that would have gone together, but of course it was the best thing I've had at Kathmandu. And I have been here more than a few times.. maybe 20 or so. If you can throw down for this meal during dinner, it will not disappoint. The bar area has changed since I went to school at UCD, and I think it's really trying to be trendier. Was. So. Good. With peppers, onions, cabbage, and spiced with cumin and other things I could not identify. Served with four pieces of naan (Kathmandu naan: I could probably just eat that and be totally satisfied) and a bowl of basmati rice. My friends all ordered various vegetable-based dishes (paneer tikka masala, dal, some sort of spinach dish) and they are served on huge platters with sides, rice, naan, and other things. I mean, HUGE platters! For around 10-12 bucks each! Most of us had abundant leftovers. Everything had peppers, and spices, and you could even select from one of FOUR spicy levels! Like custom-tailored plates. Service-wise, I loved our waiter. She was so gracious and friendly. Being very attentive and making sure all our needs were met. My party actually indicated that they had been served by her before and said she is always super nice. I really need to start remembering their names so I can mention them in reviews. The busing staff was a little...awkward, but that's excusable, it's not like they were terrible or anything. The restaurant itself is nice. Indian decor, Indian music videos playing over the bar (I do love Indian music both traditional and pop...again, where the @&#! have I been without the food?!). Delectably delightful! This place has been around for a while -- but it was my first time just a few days ago and I'll certainly be back for more. A perfect place for vegetarians, KK offers a lovely ambiance and friendly service. My dinner companions and I were seated at a booth and almost immediately were approached by a very friendly server who gave us water and offered some refreshing iced chai. One of the things I noticed and really liked about my first visit was that the presentation of the menu was impeccable--it was hard-bound, colorful, and well organized. This may sound insignificant, but menu presentation is really important. If they are full of stains, greasy or have hand written over prices with pens then it's just plain ugly and unappetizing. SO, I was really pleased from the start. We started out with the veggie samosas appetizer which arrives with two kinds of sweet and spicy sauces in a bed of (yes iceberg lettuce, but that's ok). Filled with potatoes and green peas seasoned with curry and coriander powder, they were scrumptious! We then chose the la Carte Paneer Tika Masala which is served with Basmati rice, Traditional Nepalese Thali, dal, nan, chutney, and vegetable curry. We also ordered the Vegetable Korma (non la Carte). The velvety smooth red-orange sauce of the Paneer Tika Masala arrives with chunks of paneer (made with vegetable rennet) and is deliciously aromatic from the herbs, spices, and fenugreek.The yellow dal and the basmati rice as well as the small helping of yogurt soothes the palate in case you ordered this dish extra hot (which we did). Everything fits together nicely on this dish. The Vegetable Korma was also a very good dish. It has a more chunky stew like consistency and it comes with a slew of delicious vegetables like small mushrooms, carrots, green peas, cauliflowers, potatoes, and peppers stewed in a cashew nut curry. There are hints of nutmeg and cinnamon as well although I am not sure if they list this on their menu. After the meal was over we hung out until about 1045pm which was very much past the 10pm closing time but we had had such a wonderful meal that we chatted without paying attention to the time!
