Had a decent overall experience at this salon. It's tough finding somebody you can trust to cut your hair when you are new to the area so I trusted my fellow yelpers on this one and they were pretty accurate. Parking here kind of stinks, have to find a spot on the street. The salon itself is pretty small from what I could see. Receptionist area is very cramped and there are about six hair stations or so. I believe there was a back room for massages and nails but there was a curtain blocking my view. They had decorated the whole place with Halloween decor which I thought was awesome! Receptionist was friendly and Michelle was ready for me right away. She took one look at my hair and told me I needed a conditioning treatment. Did I really need one? Who knows, but I trusted her and spent the extra $15 bucks. Truth be told, the treatment did nothing for my hair, man I can be a sucker sometimes. I had no idea what I wanted done to my hair I just told her that I wanted it to be full of volume and healthy....probably every woman's request when they go into a salon unsure of what they want. She definitely did a good job with the cut blew it out for me which was great. Total came to $65, would have been $50 without the treatment. I don't think the haircut was worth $50 to be honest. I wasn't too happy once I got home and tried to do it myself. Obviously it always looks better in the salon but the cut doesn't do much for me now that its a week past. Bummer. Michelle was VERY friendly and patient when I was explaining what I wanted with my hair so I would recommend her. read more

I was literally looking up flights to go back to NYC to go to my tried and true stylist when I saw Carmen outside putting salt on her steps and noticed her stunning curly hair. After a conversation, I decided to come in and get my hair cut here. I am so glad I did! I had gone to another Buffalo salon that was highly rated for curly hair and it was completely ruined. They cut it with a razor and I spent months thinking it was the end for my hair. I thought I would have to go back to straightening it as the only time it looked decent was when I straightened it. BUT I HAVE CURLY HAIR AND I WANT IT CURLY! I went to another stylist in another state and he couldn't repair the damage (after lobbing off 5" to get to the razor cut to go away - and I was trying to grow my hair long at the time but obviously, not now). He also cut it all one blunt length which does NOT work for curly hair so I looked like Selma from the Simpsons with triangle hair ANYWAY Carmen miraculously fixed the damage that BOTH stylists did - both the awful razor cut and the blunt cut. She had a real challenge ahead of her as she had so much to fix and she couldn't go much shorter, but she did it. She also took the time to explain every process she was doing and how it improves the curl, as well as to style it and explain and show every single process. I was starting to (unintentionally) grow a mullet, and I really needed a trim. It was Friday evening, so I didn't have much hope of getting in anywhere but I went down the list of places sourced on Yelp, and Karma was the only one who could fit me in on such short notice. Should have been a red flag. I have very short hair, but have been trying to grow it out a little (especially my bangs). I told that to the hair stylist, and also told her that I wanted the back trimmed but not that straight-across buzzed look. "More punk rock than suburban housewife" were I think my exact words when I described the style I was going for. This was honestly the worst haircut I've ever had. She didn't listen to anything I said, and I wound up with short Spock-bangs, a straight-across buzzed neck, and a weird pouffy bowl on top, what happens when you "texturize" thick wavy hair and then blow dry it. I'm no shrinking violet, and I expressed that I wasn't happy. She told me to just give it a few days to get used to it and if I still didn't like it I could always come back. I picked up my mom for dinner right after and when she got in the car her first words were, "oh god, from outside I thought you had a hat on. What is *that*?" After a few weeks I still don't like it, my hair is now growing in funny and looks really awful without lots of work on my part. The whole reason I cut my hair is so that I didn't have to put this kind of effort in anymore. I definitely won't be going back. read more

Oh my goodness-- I just had the best experience I have ever had at a hair salon. This place is the best. Yesterday I had reached the point where I was desperate to get a haircut as my hair was looooong overdue. I checked out the reviews on yelp and it seemed like it was worth a shot. I gave them a call and was greeted by a friendly voice who was able to fit me right in for a same-day appointment with Jenny. I got to the salon, which was adorable and at a great, convenient location on Elmwood. Everyone immediately made me feel welcome, and I was taken to get my hair washed right away. Jenny gave my hair all the love and attention it has been missing. She was awesome-- not only did she perfectly create what I had envisioned for my hair, but she really took the time to give me a comprehensive, high- quality cut followed by a beautiful blowout and styling. She offered a lot of helpful tips for how to take care of my hair and she showed me how I can recreate the look at home. Furthermore, she (and everyone else at the salon) was so sweet. So easy to talk to . After spending so much time on my hair, she also charged me a reasonable price. It is evident that Jenny and we coworkers take great pride in their work and obviously have great talent. Needless to say, I have found my new salon. Highly highly recommend this place. read more

If you are looking for a salon to DESTROY your hair, this is the one for you! I have long blonde hair and wanted a simple trim, just 3 inches off the bottom because I'm trying to grow it to all one length and the tiniest amount of ASH BLONDE balayage highlights at the front of my face. I showed the stylist a photo and she reassured me multiple times that she understood my vision. Clearly, she did not. My highlights turned out stripy and super brassy- I'd say mustard yellow, not the white/blonde I was going for. They also started about 4 inches from my scalp. I honestly could have done a better job if I used a box and a plastic cap. The cut is another story. She hacked my hair to bits. While the cut was nice, it was not at all what I asked for. She cut my hair into layers and trimmed my bangs which I repeatedly said I was trying to let grow. I explained my style and how I wear my hair and she completely ignored me and did what she wanted to do. Needless to say, I was very upset. I called almost immediately after leaving and they offered to fix the color. I went back the next day first thing in the morning and was helped by the owner who said herself the color was not acceptable. She toned my hair a second time which did not work at all and then handed me over to another stylist when it came time to wash, dry, and style my hair. They once again styled it in a way I have NEVER worn my hair and absolutely never will. I left looking exactly as bad as I did the day before. I ended up having to go home and use the correct toner on myself to get it to a decent color. So, here's your warning. Go elsewhere or you'll regret it for sure. read more

Since moving to Buffalo, April is the only stylist I have found that I trust 100% to do anything she wants to my hair- I am incredibly picky about hair, and she always does an amazing job. She is especially great if you are looking for a fun, contemporary style. Also, she is a fantastic colorist! I've gotten tons of compliments on the many different hairstyles she has given me - I've referred a lot of people to her and they've all been happy too! First, let me say that I have never liked a haircut right away. I'm really picky and it usually takes about a week for me to like/get used to my cut. Karma was the only exception. Diane is one of the best and fun person to be around. And she gives a great haircut. I have been going to her for the past three years and refuse to go anywhere else. I even flew back from New York City to have my hair cut by her, well I was in the area and needed a haircut, but was happy to be in that particular situation. We laugh the entire time and there is nothing I wont tell her. She is truly amazing and wish I still lived in Buffalo to get a cut, but more importantly, have a great time with. I have never had a regular salon...I tend to be really impulsive when it comes to cutting/coloring my hair. I hadn't had it done since June and what had at that time been auburn hair with blond highlights was now brown at the top and almost all blonde at the bottom. I had heard that Carmen was really great with curly hair but, I ended up making an appointment with Charlene since she was available. She understood what I wanted right away and took her time correcting my color. The whole process took almost three hours, but I walked away with a beautiful, rich hair color and an awesome hair cut. Even though it was late on a Saturday, she still insisted on spending the time to correct the former color before adding new color. She put some layers in my hair and flat-ironed it just because she wanted to see how it would look! I'm definitely going back to her, which is saying a lot since I rarely go to the same salon twice! For the color correction, new color, haircut, blowout and flatiron it was only $125 which i thought was VERY reasonable. Plus, Charlene was really personable and fun to talk to. Went back for a second haircut and was disappointed. My haircut was mediocre and it took a long time. I have very short hair and don't expect it to take an hour to cut it. Some folks might like that because it was leisurely experience, but I just get antsy. Although I went back to the same person, she couldn't figure out how she cut my hair before. I think one of the problems may be that the shampoo boys wash your hair before you get to talk to the stylist. I find it works better when the stylist looks at your hair dry and figures out a plan before getting your hair all wet. read more

I'm a hair dresser too but at a different salon but I enjoy the salon experience to pamper myself. I prefer me time away from work if that makes sense. I got a curly perm and cut on my long hair and it came out BEAUTIFUL. The owner did it and her daughter assisted and the curls never fell out even after bleaching and multiple color services the curls stayed in! The owner is hilarious, beautiful and a great conversationalist! I've since cut the perm out going really short but it was a really really impressive chemical curling service and I thoroughly enjoyed having curly hair for a year! I even called telling them how happy I was because I'm a total dork! But when my hair looks beautiful it makes me feel so happy and that's totally worth the money spent! I thought it was worth sharing and I think about how people don't understand how difficult it is to be a cosmetologist. We want to please everybody but sometimes people have very unrealistic or even impossible expectations. When you understand the artistry, expertise and science behind what goes into this line of work you would know that Yelp is never an accurate way to judge a salon because in order to truly judge something you would have to actually know and be educated on the services provided. You can tell that they are very knowledgable about hair and know lots of "tricks" they will give you not just to sell products in store. I've been going to Michelle at Karma for seven years. Yes! Seven years! She's the most attentive, thoughtful stylist I've ever run across. Every time I go in, I come out looking great. I've also seen her finishing up with all kinds of people, from girls getting updos to guys stopping by at the last minute before a family dinner, and I've never known anyone to be unhappy. She does a wonderful job at listening to what someone wants, and then making it happen quickly and very stylishly.
