V Sattui is rather unique among the region's wineries, for several reasons: they have a food market, they allow purchased bottles to be consumed on site, they allow picnicking, and they serve as a wedding venue. This is not easy to achieve in Napa's ridiculously restrictive permitting landscape. So first, let's talk about the food market, which is one of the main attractions of this place. The cheese shop alone is worth going out of your way for. Almost every type of cheese you can hope to find. Sorry to my idealistic vegan aspirations, but I don't think I'll be giving up cheese anytime soon. They have a deli with sandwiches, pastas and various side dishes, olives, fruits, etc. Come on an empty stomach and be ready to eat well. When we first arrived at the winery, we were welcomed in by the very nice host, who explained the tasting menu options, if we were interested in a tasting. About 13 wines to choose from, and you get to pick any 5, $45 per tasting. Love the flexibility. Lots of white and rose options, as opposed to many wineries which just pile on the reds. I like a good red, don't get me wrong, usually with a big dinner, but on a hot summer day, I want lighter, refreshing wines. So we were sold, and signed up for an indoor tasting before lunch. During the couple of years we've been away from Napa, the winery has completely rebuilt their tasting room and store, for both structural and cosmetic reasons. It looks fantastic now, featuring a very attractive, modern circular tasting bar. Would have taken pics, but I try to avoid posting pictures of strangers on the internet, and the tasting room was filled with people. We grabbed a seat at the bar, and were greeted by our tasting guide, Lucas. Lucas was amazing. Personable, hospitable, and engaging. He made us feel welcome, got to know us, and ensured we had a great time throughout, even though he was serving multiple other customers at the same time. I could never do his job. I selected all white and rose wines, and RB went with mostly red. My favorites were the off-dry Riesling, and the Sauvignon Blanc. RB's Preston Vineyards cab was also very good, but again, I would need a hearty meal to consume this with. Lucas also treated us to a couple of complimentary pours, and the Madeira was an especially nice treat. We finished up our tasting, bid au revoir to Lucas, and made our way to the deli for lunch. We were hungry and decided to keep it simple with the essentials - cheese (of course), sweet baguette, and grapes. So many enticing cheeses to choose from, but you can't go wrong with French Brie and medium cheddar, so that's what we opted for. As for the beverage selection, RB's and my wine palates do not always align, but we can usually agree on bubbles, so that's what we did. Armed with a bottle of Brut cuvée and the aforementioned goodies, we made our way out to the picnic area. It's lovely out there. Many picnic tables, in the shade or in the sun, or you can picnic on the grass. We found a shaded table in the breeze overlooking Route 29, and settled in for our leisurely lunch. Once inside the large upstairs tasting venue, we were treated to a nice wine tasting by Riana. The wines were nice. I'm a Cabernet person but I enjoyed the sparking rose. Refreshing and not too sweet. I wish we would have had more time to view some of this historic photos and explore the downstairs part of the venue as it looked interesting but perhaps another time when we return to Napa.

Since wine preferences vary from person to person, this review will be about the tasting experience only. The tasting started with their sparkling brut rosé, which was pretty tasty, however, it seemed to lose its bubbles after a short few minute walk to their fermentation and aging facility, which indicates to me it had been opened for quite some time. The "tour" itself lasted less than 5 minutes and didn't really come with too much of an explanation--it was more or less just allowing us access to the winemaking facility and showing the barrel room. The tasting was seated in their covered, outdoor patio--a beautiful space--a included 3 wines in addition to the brut rosé: 2025 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 2022 Cabernet Franc Blend, and the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon 'RLC'. One thing I really dislike about Napa Valley tastings is when they pour you wines you cannot buy because they're available to club members only. It's quite pervasive in the valley and unfortunately, Crocker & Starr was no different. The 2025 Estate Sauvignon Blanc was only available for purchase to club members. In addition, if you like to know the technical details for each wine, they do not have any tech sheets/production notes available on their website or at the tasting. They provide empty bottles of the wines in the tasting, however they didn't match the vintage so it wasn't even possible to know basic information like the ABV of the wines. It immediately sets off alarm bells in my mind when a winery is opaque with the winemaking/product details. Some of us want to know the final ABV, RS, TA, etc, and to not have this information available anywhere is quite bizarre, especially with many producers moving toward more transparency rather than less. Our host was friendly but not necessarily super knowledgeable about the production of the wines. For example, when we asked about RS in the Sauvignon Blanc, she started talking about brix at harvest, which unfortunately has nothing to do with RS in the wine, which she later claimed was 0g/L--a value that seemed contradictory to the palate experience of the wine and impossible to verify without tech sheets. Overall, it was a standard tasting experience and from where I was sitting, not at all worth $95/person. Yes, I get it--Napa is expensive and they're selling "experiences" rather than tastings. However, based on our experience, this was merely a tasting and you can get a lot better ones for cheaper in the valley.

You start by checking in at the bottom of the hill. You then take the gondola up to the winery where you'll start with a white wine. We then proceeded to go on a walking tour where we were able to learn more about the long history of Sterling Vineyards. Along the way we were able to take in arguably the best views in all of the valley while enjoying wine that started from grapes that were grown in the vineyards below. Check in is at the front upon entering along with the gondola and a shared restroom with individual stalls. While checking in for our chosen experience, we received our drink rings and tasting menu. The gondola is to left of check in, where we proceeded to after using the restroom (to the left of the gondola entrance). The gondola experience was quiet, smooth and scenic. At the gondola's end is the entrance to Sterling Vineyards. You are met with breathtaking views and vintage bells that ring every 15 minutes. The current gondola is the third installation since the vineyards opening. The installation occurred following the fires in 2020 that burned majority of the vineyard and its estate. At the first tasting, you receive your glass for majority of the tour. Here is where the ring received at check in goes on the stem of your glass. The gentlemen at this station are incredibly funny and was a treat to engage with. The older gentleman sung to Ashanti's sister for her birthday along with Zach Bryan. I'll be back for the oyster event in August, told him I'd like a song for my birthday - he said he'd be there. Can't wait! Wish I got his name...you know who you are! The tasting tour is self guided. Our experience was a tasting of six with the first three wines provided while walking, the last three were provided on the terrace with our charcuterie. Diego was the absolute best. He shared a lot of himself in the experience which I welcomed, he truly personalized our experience allowing it to be more authentic than business orientated. STERLING PLEASE START TO BOTTLE AND SELL THE BLOOD ORANGE HOUSEMADE JAM...PUHLEEZZZZZZ!!!! Kudos to the new chef, hers or his ingenuity is brilliant. We did not want the jam to end. The blood orange housemade jam is a sweet citrusy, blood orange jam with heat. It is the perfect ying yang pairing for anything and everything. Seriously! I'm SO EXCITED to see what else the amazing, newest chef of Sterling Vineyards has to offer...I'm ready to indulge in your imagination on a plate. Need a volunteer tester...I'm her!!! At the end of the tour (where the first tasting began), is a set of stairs directly in front. The stairs led to the Wine Gift Shop where there were wines, candles, cutting boards, assorted glassware, travel mugs in an assortment, edible goods, candies, tasting rooms, water fountain and restrooms. Here is where I signed up for membership with Sterling. The Sterling Vineyards Membership offers four membership tiers ranging in price of $185 to $400 per release. Releases occur five times a year (Feb, Apr, Jun, Oct, Dec) and members are required to honor three of the five release dates per year to maintain membership. Each release is customizable with the exception of a purchased gift membership. Shipments can be shipped for a flat rate ($25) or picked up. Pick ups offer access to ten complimentary tastings (for up to six people) in a tasting room and/or a walking self guided tasting. Birthday, anniversary, girls trip, boys trip, just because (as we did) any reason is a great reason to come, visit, experience the landscape, staff, service, food and winery of Sterling Vineyards.

We had Bryan for a tour guide and he was informative and really knew how to work the crowd to make it an enjoyable experience. They have strictly reds with bottles starting at 60 bucks. The caves were really interesting. The chandeliers in them make some pretty photo ops. It's nice and cool in there to get you out of the Napa heat in the middle of the day You end the tour with some more tasting in the lobby area. Best of all the tour comes with some very welcome pizza and tater tots! We did our second stop at v. Sattui afterwards and to be honest it was a nice contrast of ambience between the two wineries.

The caves are unlike any I have been in before where they are usually rustic. These are beautifully decorated and all kinds of art. I would have liked to see more of the caves but they just have the dercorated section open for these tours. The barrel tasting was great and surprisinly all their wines are pretty drinkable right out of the barrell I suppose because they dont have much tannins so they dont need alot of tiem to mellow. I liked most of them but at $250 a botttle I felt they were way overpriced compared to other high end Napa area wines we are familiar with. After the cave tour they sit inside and you get to try several more wines so we had plenty to drink. I was not expecting a full size pizza for the two of us we already had lunch plan right after so we took most of it with us. Only bought two bottles of their less expensive wines at $95 each which is still a little high!! Probably wont be back since the value just isnt there for purchasing their wines but I do reccomend the tour.
