We stopped in around 7pm on Saturday and there was only a handful of dinners, so we were able to get seated right away. The service was quick and food came out fast. They do close at 8pm, so as it got close to 8pm, we could see them starting to prepare to close, but they did not rush us. Food here is pretty consistently good. We ordered: Sizzling Bangus Belly, Mussels Sauté, Crispy Pata and Crispy Binagoongan. Everything was delicious and makes you want to eat more rice! So far we have not had a bad dish here. The ambience was perpetually lackluster because of location and design. It could be better, to catch more attention. The service was decent on a busy day. The price was reasonable and for the food on the other end was bland, with a bitter aftertaste. The veggies were excessive and did not fit together with the meat cohesively, in terms of overall flavor. They tend to cook it very tender, like the beef soup. Which should not be. Chicken has a certain texture, and should not be very tender like fall of the bones, like beef soup. All others are good, but I stay away from any chicken dish, like adobo, etc. I got turned off. The cooks and workers inside, tend to get noisy also. For those who said they weren't informed about the service charge, it literally says it on the menu. So just because the customer didn't see it, doesn't mean it wasnt posted. So shame on the reviewers who want to say poor things about illegally charging for a service fee that ACTUALLY was posted in their menu. Back to my review. We ordered a few items. The serving size was big for each item so the price point was really good. Great value for the food. The dishes itself were amazing in flavor. Everything was fresh. Not oily or greasy like most filipino places. The pancit was full of flavor. The sinigan was so fresh. The beef was tender. The broth was tasty. The bisteak had good flavor, wasn't too oily. Onions were sautéed just right. Garlic rice was amazing! And I also really enjoyed their sago which had both tapioca pearls and jelly. YUMMY! They have steamed and fried garlic rice, scrambled eggs mixed with tomatoes and onions, tocino, longanisa, fried chicken wings, pancit, Sisig, fried bangus an jeprox, laing( so good) and kare kare( so good), crispy binagoong with mango, eggplant, sinigang( so good), champorsdo(so good), and fresh fruit. I had the sinigang first and so hot (temperature) and not too sour. This made my stomach ready for all the salty and rich savory dishes. Had the jeprox with a full bowl of champorsdo. If you have never been to a Filipino party this buffet gives you an idea of what to expect. Minus the lumpia, which I had tried at our previous visit. People complained about the service charge but at %15 for two people I thought that was fair. If you wanted to add a tip you could but most people don't like to tip before eating so a service charge for the buffet seemed fair. The server gave us new bowls when we asked. I didn't bother asking for a new plate. Glad I made my husband come early because when we left at 10:30 am there was a line to get in and the place was pretty full the entire time we were there. The meat of the Kare kare kind of looked different from the last time I've had it a year ago and tasted more like tocino meat. I always go for the Lechon kawali. After we saw the Hell's Kitchen Broadway musical show in San Francisco on Wednesday, one friend suggested to eat at the Karilagan. It had been a while since my last visit at this restaurant. We drove separately and found good parking on the street. Dinner started at 5 pm so we just walked in for a party of 5. It was still quiet but shortly after people started coming. We ordered the Kare Kare, Beef Sinigang, Sizzling Sisig, Pakbet Ilocano and steamed rice. The dishes were promptly served and generous serving sizes. When we saw the food it made us more hungry as we did not have lunch as the show started at 1 pm. The beef was so tender. The veggies were fresh and tasty. Drinking the broth from the bowl was so delicious. The cooking of the kare kare was so satisfying. For dessert we ordered two Halo Halo. I liked how they served it because they had enough of sweet assortments. I took the pictures of the food and I forgot the Halo Halo. There were two servers and they were nice pleasing everyone on the table. The dining room was clean. The place was simply decorated. The automatic tip of 18% was fair for everything. Reading the reviews, I don't understand why the other diners have to be surprised about the auto tip. So I went here on a Sunday, it was kind of strange around opening time since I went early as expected for their brunch buffet, it seems that they opened late since I was expecting them to open as early as 9:00 AM but they open around 9:14 AM which was strange, they should open early next time so that they can gain more customers coming in on time. The Kare-Kare has a bit too much peanut butter which has that over saturated taste into it, put a little bit next time, but still tastes nice. The ambiance of the entire place feels modern and nice since it reminds me of the Philippines. It's a quiet place since I like it comparing to the noisy ambience comparing to Ling-Nam. The price per head for the Buffet was around $25.99 which sounds very overwhelmingly expensive and quite risky for some wanting to try breakfast, my suggestion would be adjust your price around $18.99 so that you could have the great chance to compete with Ling-Nam. This review is based solely on my most recent experience. We catered for Christmas Eve, to be picked up at 3pm. Lumpia, pancit, and lechon kawali. I get there at 315, and they pull out a pack of frozen lumpia, placed it on the kitchen counter and yell to the back that they need the lechon. Someone said it is in the menu, how many people look at the service charge before ordering? Horrible, traumatizing experience for our disabled child. Customer service and lack of empathy is ridiculous. We are a party of 9 with a service dog. We enter the restaurant. It is not very busy with plenty of available seats. The hostess/waitress immediately "You can't come in here" and motions her hand towards our daughter's service dog. We inform her that she is a service animal and she continues to state that we can't bring her in. She won't even come up to us and is saying this while continuing to multi-task in the restaurant. I ask her why we cannot and she keeps saying that we just can't. And I keep letting her know that we have a service animal and even point to the sign on their door. She then says we need a paper. I inform her that I have documentation and the service dog has tags, and she continues to say we can't bring the service dog in. She doesn't even attempt to look at any documentation. At this point, our party doesn't want to dine there anymore but I felt this still needed to be addressed since it isn't right. I asked again why we couldn't come in if we had a service animal. And she rudely responds talking under her breath and shaking her head. She then goes over to the other staff and it appears she asks one of them and they continue to say no. I stated to her, "so you're denying us access here due to our service animal". Again she shakes her, talks under her breath, and keeps trying to multi-task on the floor. We then walk out after about 5-10 minutes of this interaction. She follows us out and says she called the owner and we can come in but we need to stay on the side and my daughter's service dog needs to be put in the corner. I told her "no thank you, we're leaving" and also mentioned that we will be reporting this establishment to the ADA for denying us access due to our service animal. Sad, sad day. Shame on you Karilagan. Please train your staff to deal with such sensitive situation, especially if you going to have that sign on your door. read more

Amazing portions here and fast service! It all tasted so amazing and truly reminds me of homemade Filipino food. The chicken tinola had a good mix of chicken and vegetables with the amazing gingery and garlicky broth. Pancit Bihon was a huge plate and was very flavorful! Had a good amount of chicken pieces (also includes shrimp but opted out due to allergies) and veggies! Lechon Kawali is my partners favorite and for good reason! It is perfectly crunchy and comes with the classic Mang Tomas sauce on the side. A good mix of fatty and meaty pieces. read more

Having grown up in the Bay Area, especially around South San Francisco and Daly City, the Filipino influence is strong so one can expect that the cuisine is a reflection of that culture. It has taken many years for me to go here but Karilagan does not disappoint. The interior is simple, elements of the Philippines adorn the walls and we also lucked out to miss the lunch crowd and were seated right away a bit after 1pm. When you look at the menu, it's extensive. If you love Filipino food, the variety makes you feel like you're at a relatives' party and they've put out 20 dishes with all the sides and you have to figure out what to eat because it looks so good. From silog options available all day to soups (bulalo was amazing), appetizers (calamari comes with vinegar and onion sauce for the side), meat dishes (get the binagoongan, delicious) and seafood/veggies (the Bicol express was my favorite!), there is something to satisfy everyone's palette! And the portions are huge! We came with a party of 5 total and ordered 5 dishes and went home with leftovers enough for another meal for 3 more people. For 5 people it was really good, $120 total so $24/person. Street parking was pretty easy for us to find. read more

I was very disappointed by my visit to this restaurant. Staff is impatient, rude, and non-attentive. When I arrived I was waiting alongside a couple of other groups waiting to be seated, and it took quite some time for any of us to get acknowledged by the workers. Eventually a lady approached my mother and I and asked how many were in our party, and I let her know it was a party of two and without saying anything she quickly walked away to a table. Confused, I followed just for the lady to yell "Not yet!" when she noticed I came along. Communication from staff can go a long way during situations like these with customers. As for the food, I will say the dishes are decently priced and portions are quite big. However, flavor wise everything was overly salty (aside from lumpia). Sisig was quite dry, and I wasn't a fan of the canned jalapeños as a topping. Lumpia was decently sized, and it tasted like your average lumpia. Lastly, something I really wanted to note was the fact that the person who took our bill along with my mother's card chose the tip themselves. We were only a party of two, so automatic gratuity should not have been made on behalf of staff instead of the cardholder themselves. This is unprompted and disrespectful behavior especially after our experience at this restaurant. Service was decent, overfried the food, had a service charge of 18% with only 3 people. Basic ambiance. They start closing 20 minutes before closing time. Shoved to go boxes in your face even if you didn't ask for the bill yet. Honestly, should be ashamed to be a Filipino restaurant. Filipinos usually take pride in their food and culture. The food was fine, it's Ilocano style. I liked the pakbet and paksiw na belly, both pretty unique from other Filipino restaurants. I wished I had read earlier reviews. I got socked with the 18% service charge, which really messed up the dining experience. It's not exactly a fine dining experience and one would normally not expect this type of charge. No one is going to read the fine print on a menu for the service charge, it's extra sneaky that they even put this in there just to cover their ass. They should remove this charge before they get more bad reviews. read more

4.5-5 STARS Karilagan is one of the better Filipino places to eat in the South San Francisco / Daly City are. The portion sizes are huge so bring a big group to eat with you. Here are the dishes I recommend: - Crispy pata (5 stars, 2 shanks for $20): crispy pata is a double fried pork hock. The serving size for this dish at Karilagan is massive. It's served with a delicious spiced vinegar sauce on the side. - Sizzling sisig (4 stars, $13.95): sisig is pork chunks and some intestines cooked with garlic, onion, peppers on a sizzling plate. It's delicious. Order this. - Bulalo (4.5 stars, $18.00): bulalo is beef shank soup served with vegetables. If you want a soup to complement your other hearty Fiipino dishes, this is the dish to get! - Sitaw kalabasa (4 stars, $14.00): this is shrimp and pork cooked in a spicy coconut milk with squash and green beans - it's probably very different from other Filipino dishes you've tried and is a nice veggie dish to have on the side. - Pancit miki bihon (4 stars, $12.50): this is a mix of egg and rice stick noodles). FYI - I rarely dine in here. My relationship with K is mainly To Go orders. FOOD: BIG portions. You will have leftovers. I consider this value cuz I'm also getting a meal or 2 afterward. Overall quality is gooooood. TIP: If you ain't Filipino, you should know that the same dish is prep'd differently between each Filipino restaurant - learn why, our culture is dope & diverse. Our fave here is the Sizzling Sisig - lean cuts of pork with just enough fat to flavor it up. Ask for the jalapeños & onions on the side if you weak (j/k). Other choice items: Kare Kare, Sizzling Bangus Belly & the dessert Coco Cha Cha is a MUST. If you Dine in, it tends to be busy on Friday & weekend evenings. read more
