i come here for their Bistek Tagalog--it's consistently superb. This time, I ordered the Kare-Kare and was a bit disappointed. It had more fat than meat, and the bagoong was too sweet for my taste, almost like a jam. The restaurant has a warm, comfortable ambiance that's great for a relaxed meal, and the service was good as always. I'll definitely be back to try different dishes

Sinigan

Really shocked at some of the reviews left for this business. Parking was scarce but it was definitely worth it. Came in and although the restaurant was almost full, we were seated right away. For those who said they weren't informed about the service charge, it literally says it on the menu. So just because the customer didn't see it, doesn't mean it wasnt posted. So shame on the reviewers who want to say poor things about illegally charging for a service fee that ACTUALLY was posted in their menu. Back to my review. We ordered a few items. The serving size was big for each item so the price point was really good. Great value for the food. The dishes itself were amazing in flavor. Everything was fresh. Not oily or greasy like most filipino places. The pancit was full of flavor. The sinigan was so fresh. The beef was tender. The broth was tasty. The bisteak had good flavor, wasn't too oily. Onions were sautéed just right. Garlic rice was amazing! And I also really enjoyed their sago which had both tapioca pearls and jelly. YUMMY! The workers were amazing, working hard at trying to serve quickly and politely. They were turning around the tables very quickly without rushing the customers who were eating. I enjoyed their hospitality. Overall I enjoyed this restaurant. You could taste the home cooking in their food. I will definitely come back again. I definitely plan to

Proof of the menu stating service charge is for 6 or more
Melodie L.

I came in expecting a meal and left feeling annoyed, overcharged, and completely unimpressed. This place managed to combine mediocre food, careless service, and shady billing practices all in one visit. Let's start with the most infuriating part: the automatic 15% service charge. The menu clearly states this applies to parties of six or more. We were a party of four--not five, not six, FOUR. Yet the charge magically appeared on our bill anyway. When I pointed this out, the server told us it now applies to everyone and that the menu just hasn't been updated yet. That's not how menus--or honesty--work. If you change your policy, update your menu. Period. Then there's the absolute audacity of charging $10 for a side of plain white rice. No toppings, no extras, no explanation--just rice. At that price, I expected something life-changing. Instead, it was bland, basic, and laughable. I actually thought it was a mistake until I was told, no, that's the price. The service was just as disappointing. After dropping off the food, the server essentially vanished. No check-ins, no follow-up, no effort whatsoever. Empty glasses sat untouched, and plates with barely eaten food went completely unnoticed. It felt like we were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. As for the food--utterly forgettable. Everything lacked flavor, seasoning, and care. It's one thing to overpay, but it's another to overpay for food that tastes like it was rushed out with zero attention or pride. By the time the bill arrived--with the surprise service charge and overpriced rice--I was done. This wasn't just a bad meal; it was a frustrating, poorly managed experience from start to finish. There are far too many good restaurants out there to waste your money here. Skip it.

Buffet

Came back with husband on Saturday around9:30 am for brunch. Yelp show open 11 am but sign outside said brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 12:30 pm. It was mostly full but we were seated right away. You pay first and then you get a plate and bowl and shown to your table. The brunch includes coffee and calamansi juice( so good!). They have steamed and fried garlic rice, scrambled eggs mixed with tomatoes and onions, tocino, longanisa, fried chicken wings, pancit, Sisig, fried bangus an jeprox, laing( so good) and kare kare( so good), crispy binagoong with mango, eggplant, sinigang( so good), champorsdo(so good), and fresh fruit. I had the sinigang first and so hot (temperature) and not too sour. This made my stomach ready for all the salty and rich savory dishes. Had the jeprox with a full bowl of champorsdo. If you have never been to a Filipino party this buffet gives you an idea of what to expect. Minus the lumpia, which I had tried at our previous visit. People complained about the service charge but at %15 for two people I thought that was fair. If you wanted to add a tip you could but most people don't like to tip before eating so a service charge for the buffet seemed fair. The server gave us new bowls when we asked. I didn't bother asking for a new plate. Glad I made my husband come early because when we left at 10:30 am there was a line to get in and the place was pretty full the entire time we were there. The food was steaming in the chafing trays but by the time you get through the line and to your table the only things I thought hot was the sinigang and champorado. They posted a sign of no leftover policy so I was careful to only get small portions so I could go back for what I truly wanted more of. I don't know what happens if you have taken more food than you could finish. I would go again!

Bicol's Express

Came here by our friend's family's recommendation and ordered all their favorites -- we left stuffed and super satisfied. We enjoyed literally everything we ate here. Portions are generous and you'll likely leave with leftovers! Casual vibe good for small and large group dine-in or takeout. Seems like they do catering, too! price: ~$25/person recs: Beef Mechado, Pancit Miki Bihon - Calamari: Generous portion, light breading, pairs perfectly with vinegar sauce - Pancit Miki Bihon: Thin flavorful noodles with plenty of mixed veggie and seafood toppings. So easy to eat and share. - Beef Mechado: Still thinking about this dish. Beef was fall-apart tender and the sauce goes so well with rice. - Bicol's Express: Veggies in a curry sauce. I normally don't love bittermelon and okra but somehow loved them in this dish.

Karilagan Menu 10/2025

I've eaten at Karilagan a few times over the years. This time we came for Easter dinner. We ordered the Sizzling Sisig, Kare Kare, Pancit Miki Bihon, Sitaw Kalabasa sa Gata, and steamed rice. The portions were generous, and we ended up with a lot of leftovers. I would come back if we're specifically craving Filipino food, but not necessarily go out of my way. What stood out this visit was the 18% service charge, which felt a bit excessive for a non-high-end restaurant. In addition, we were charged $10 for steamed rice for four people, which seemed high, especially since we didn't even get extra rice and still had leftovers. Also, read the receipt carefully. It's easy to overlook the service charge because there is also a tip guide listed on the receipt, which could lead to accidentally tipping on top of the service charge. Overall, decent food and portions, but the pricing and added charges make it less appealing.

Lumpia, Kare Kare
Heather T.

I come here when my family wants to switch up and get Filipino food in South San Francisco. I think the only I don't like from what we ordered was the extra tripe that came with the Kare kare. The meat of the Kare kare kind of looked different from the last time I've had it a year ago and tasted more like tocino meat. I always go for the Lechon kawali. I didn't like the brown home made all purpose sauce tasted funny so I requested some home made soy sauce vinegar mix with onion, green peppers in the sauce to eat with my lechon. So crunchy and satisfying! My son loves the lumpia here. Halo halo was really good that is a must after dinner. The service was quick the vibe is more on mom and pop restaurant.

Kare Kare

After we saw the Hell's Kitchen Broadway musical show in San Francisco on Wednesday, one friend suggested to eat at the Karilagan. It had been a while since my last visit at this restaurant. We drove separately and found good parking on the street. Dinner started at 5 pm so we just walked in for a party of 5. It was still quiet but shortly after people started coming. We ordered the Kare Kare, Beef Sinigang, Sizzling Sisig, Pakbet Ilocano and steamed rice. The dishes were promptly served and generous serving sizes. When we saw the food it made us more hungry as we did not have lunch as the show started at 1 pm. The beef was so tender. The veggies were fresh and tasty. Drinking the broth from the bowl was so delicious. The cooking of the kare kare was so satisfying. For dessert we ordered two Halo Halo. I liked how they served it because they had enough of sweet assortments. I took the pictures of the food and I forgot the Halo Halo. There were two servers and they were nice pleasing everyone on the table. The dining room was clean. The place was simply decorated. The automatic tip of 18% was fair for everything. Reading the reviews, I don't understand why the other diners have to be surprised about the auto tip. Whether it is on the bill or not, an 18% tip is considered a fair and standard gratuity for good table service at sit-down restaurants. Anyhow, we will return.

So I went here on a Sunday, it was kind of strange around opening time since I went early as expected for their brunch buffet, it seems that they opened late since I was expecting them to open as early as 9:00 AM but they open around 9:14 AM which was strange, they should open early next time so that they can gain more customers coming in on time. The food was okay and it tastes almost the same as Ling-Nam. The Kare-Kare has a bit too much peanut butter which has that over saturated taste into it, put a little bit next time, but still tastes nice. The ambiance of the entire place feels modern and nice since it reminds me of the Philippines. It's a quiet place since I like it comparing to the noisy ambience comparing to Ling-Nam. The price per head for the Buffet was around $25.99 which sounds very overwhelmingly expensive and quite risky for some wanting to try breakfast, my suggestion would be adjust your price around $18.99 so that you could have the great chance to compete with Ling-Nam. Overall, my experience with this place that I would definitely come back only once a month. Place was kind of nice. PS: The Champorado is the only best part.

Service charges more than 15% WTF! Look at tip guide $10+ to $12 was charged without consent! rice $10!!! Scam!!! Beware!!!
Jellbells S.

BEWARE!!!!! HIDDEN CHARGES ON RECEIPT! EVERYONE CHECK FOR SERVICE CHARGES AND RICE CHARGES!!! I genuinely don't know where to begin, so let me start with this: this was hands-down one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Worse service, and pricing practices that feel straight-up deceptive. First, the service charge situation. The menu clearly states a 15% automatic service charge for parties of five or more. We were a party of two. Yet somehow, we were still charged the service fee. When I politely questioned it, the server casually shrugged and said it's now "automatic" and that they "just haven't updated the menu yet." Excuse me?? So I'm supposed to pay extra because the restaurant can't be bothered to update its own menu? That's not transparency--that's bait and switch. They even over charged for the 15% service fee written on the receipt! It was $10.64 but charged me $12.77! WTF! Scammers! This restaurant scams people and squeeze everything from their customers! I have never experienced such a dishonest restaurant! Now let's talk about the $10 charge for a bowl of plain white rice. TEN. DOLLARS. For white rice. In what universe does that make sense? Was this rice hand-harvested by monks under a full moon? Because it certainly didn't taste like anything special--just bland, basic rice with an absolutely absurd price tag. The service was practically nonexistent. Our server disappeared after dropping the food and gave us a pitcher of water. Never once checked on us. No attentiveness--nothing. We sat there awkwardly, plates untouched, wondering if this was some kind of social experiment on how much neglect diners will tolerate. Between the misleading charges, outrageous pricing, and inattentive service this place managed to fail on every possible level. I left feeling irritated, ripped off, and honestly baffled by how this restaurant is still operating. Save your money. Save your appetite. Save yourself the frustration. Do not come here. Beware of scammers! This is one of those restaurants that will charge you up the a$$! Hopefully it gets shut down! Fraud!

Pancit Bihon, Garlic Rice

Kumusta! Napakagandang tuklas para sa masarap na pagkaing Pilipino! We recently enjoyed a wonderful meal at Karilagan and were impressed by both the authentic flavors and the warm hospitality. The Kare Kare is a must dish. Be sure to also order enough garlic rice!

BBQ chicken

Ordered the BBQ chicken half tray for a family party and paid $80+ for chicken that was raw underneath. The top skewers seemed fine, so we didn't realize at first, and some skewers were fully eaten. Very concerning and disappointing. Do not recommend.

Lomi Soup
Gigi C.

I went there around 7pm an hour before they close. I was craving for kare kare so i ordered it. The flavor was ok but it can be better. Serving was big tho. I wasn't satisfied so i decided to order Lomi. It was huge but i was so disappointed coz its worst than the kare kare. It was hell a bland. And theres not much shrimp or meat in it mostly broth. So i took it to go, thinking i can add more seasoning or even add some bone broth. But i got so busy and didn't get a chance to make it tastes better. No one in my house ate it. It was seating in my fridge for 4 days so i decided to toss it in the garbage. What a waste of almost $19. Service wise? No one even ask if everything was ok! I had to call them when i needed something!

We ordered two different fish dishes because some of us don't eat spicy food. We got the free one prepared non-spicy and ordered another one that was spicy. We also ordered their string beans, which are a must-order for us. The place isn't very spacious, so if you have a large party, you might have to wait longer. The portions are decent and the food tastes good, so there's always a line. I would recommend coming earlier or later, after the lunch-hour rush, if you don't want to wait an hour. His behavior was extremely rude and unprofessional. The food was also disappointing. I will not be returning. I hope management takes this complaint seriously.

Aside from the decor and Chinese speaking…read moreservice, this place does not give me any other authentic vibe, much less the taste and presentation. Service is fast but somehow rude (our server never smiled). You order via QR code and the dishes don't all come together. I ordered a Lanzhou noodle and a Xinjiang Noodle with a side of beef, and while the prices seem very fair, the amount of substance reflects the price. The noodles are minimal, and they only give you a few beef slices in the Lanzhou noodles. You would have to order to combo with skewers to feel full. Although the noodles are handpulled, they have a texture that was a little too tough. The soup tasted HEAVILY of powder seasonings instead of actual broth, and I did not take more than a few sips. It came with a lot of spicy oil, but the noodle dish barely had a kick. The Xinjiang noodle was basically an American Chinese takeout beef with noodles. The beef was both tender yet hard to chew, probably from the amount of starch/baking soda during marination. I did not taste a hint of cumin, which is a staple in Xinjiang cuisine involving meats. Although this dish had more value than the Lanzhou noodles, do not have high hopes on the taste profile or presentation. The only redeeming dish was the side of beef we got. It was flavorful and came with a relatively thick stack, and we foolishly thought it was all beef. However, under the thin layer of beef, a bunch of cucumbers shockingly came into view, and I felt ripped off for paying $11 for essentially 6 pieces of meat. The service was nonexistent, except during checkout. We had a question during checkout since a dish of ours was cancelled, and the server did not seem to know what we were talking about. The food also does not come out in a good pace; we got our beef noodles halfway into our meal, and the table of 2 next to us did not get their second order of noodles until 10min after the first one.

The restaurant is very clean and spacious with 2 different seating levels. Cleanliness is a huge deal for me and ever since I saw a cockroach at two different visits at the place up the street, I'm always hesitant to go back there and that's another reason why I ended up here too. As many people have stated, street parking really sucks, but there is the Miller Avenue Garage just up the street so I'm not sure why people always complain about that... It's literally a 2min walk, but you know most people don't bother to look and want a spot right in front of an establishment ‍ We started off with the A4 appetizer which is the fried chicken wings. The menu states it's 5 wings, but we got 9. I was a little confused at first, but looking back now, it is 5 WHOLE wings, but broken down its 10 single pieces (5 flats and 5 drums)... I guess they shorted us one piece, but whatever They were pretty tasty, not oily at all and served with a side of fish sauce. For an entree I got the #13 TÁI, GẦU, which is pho with medium rare steak and well-done brisket. It was really yummy and wasn't watered down as read in many reviews. I really liked the fact that you could choose a size instead of just a massive bowl because I hate taking leftover soup as the noodles don't really hold well and get too soggy... iykyk!! I got the small and finished it all! I could've probably done a medium, but tbh it was the perfect size for me as we also had the wings and a soda too. It was a really great value compared to other spots I've been to. For 3 bowls of pho, an order of wings, 2 sodas and a Thai ice tea, the total came out to $80. Oh, fyi I tried my son's Thai tea and unfortunately I wasn't a huge fan of it, but other than that everything else was awesome and I will definitely be back.

Spring rolls are always my go-to order at any Vietnamese spot, so I was really looking forward to…read morethese, but unfortunately, they fell short. First, the sauce: if you're expecting a true creamy peanut dipping sauce, beware! What they serve is essentially straight hoisin sauce with a few crushed peanuts floating on top, which was a huge disappointment. Second, the packaging: the spring rolls were packed so tightly together that as soon as you try to pull one apart, the rice paper sticks to the next and tears completely open, leaving you with a messy pile. They look decent initially, but the execution and dipping sauce really missed the mark.

Words to my heart, you know. Despite being sold out on some of the items we wanted to try, we still really enjoyed what we did order. Portions were generous and not too pricy. Also, despite being late, their Chinese deli was still pretty fresh. The order of roast pork we had was well seasoned and featured that airy crispy skin to be completely envious of. That alone is a huge plus because we don't have a lot of places in the peninsula to pick up these items, especially compared to the city. The fish porridge was complete comfort. Texture was good and there was plenty of fish to go around. The pork noodles were deeply savory but the pops of pickled vegetables against the silky rice noodles also really hit the spot. The only dish that was a bit meh to me were the potstickers. The filling was a bit mushy and I'm not the biggest fan if the deep fried style. Pan fried is the king for me. Definitely keeping Laka as an option whenever I really need that comfort Chinese food fix.

While the congee felt overpriced and many Tuesday evening items were sold out, the great taste makes it worth a return visit. Roast pork is apparently their signature item.

But I'm not upset at all about this impromptu decision as we had a great meal here. Our table of 6 ordered a variety of dishes and everything was delicious. the most notable items for me were the spicy wontons and fish in chili oil. The dishes were spicy but not so much so that you couldn't enjoy the actual flavors of the dish. For those that like the Szechuan tingling feeling, the chicken in explosive chilis was also quite good. We had also given the string beans, green onion pancake, and pork and shrimp dumplings a shot and all of them hit the spot. I'm usually a huge fan of braised beef noodle soup so decided to get that here too. It wasn't the same as if I had gotten this dish at a Taiwanese restaurant; compared to the strong flavors of the other dishes, this one was pretty mild. So it's something I would skip next time I come, but every other dish was on point. Our waitress was also great at taking care of us, bring out our food quickly and helping us to clear the other plates. Even after we finished our meal and overstayed our welcome by continuing to chat, the staff didn't make us feel rushed to leave.
