With several protein options available, I asked the young lady working there for her favorites, and she recommended the pork belly. The good: the curry itself is amazing! Love everything about it, even the slight kick of spiciness! The bad: the pork belly was so dry, hard and lacked any flavor! Also, the menu pics sort of made it look like they'd come breaded. Each plate comes with rice, curry, and fukujinzuke (red pickles) along with your choice of protein. I can't say no to shrimp tempura, so I got a plate of that. It comes with five pieces of shrimp. I also tried some of the pork belly plate, which I thought was unique, as I haven't seen pork belly, specifically, paired with curry before! It was pretty tender and went well with the curry sauce. My friend and I were walking around Rodeo 39 and decided on this place! We ordered on a kiosk and the food came out really quickly. I was a klutz and accidentally dropped my utensils while bringing my food to the table. It was super embarrassing and honestly I was just gonna walk away shamefully and wipe the spoon and use it anyway, but the nice worker had already grabbed me a new one. We were able to sit at a table nearby since we came on a weekday and it wasn't as busy. They played mostly pop music while we were there yapping and it was a great vibe! My wife and I used to live near Sawtelle in LA so we have definitely had some solid curry in our day...and I am sad to report that Kare is pretty average. I understand that food prices have gone up and labor is more expensive, but the value proposition that they offer for their chicken katsu curry is just not there. Their labor costs cannot be that high because you literally order on an ipad despite the worker standing right behind it, which is awkward. The portion was average and while the flavor of the curry was good, they have zero customizability on their entrees - I am used to being able to modify the spice level and add various toppings to my dish, none of which, Kare offers. We came on a Saturday for lunch and quickly made our order, which came out promptly in 15 minutes. What we ordered! - Chicken Katsu (4/5): probably their most popular menu item. The chicken itself was fried well and the batter wasn't too thick. The meat was tender and not dry, especially paired with the curry. It comes with some pickled radish and a good amount of curry. I think the rice to curry ratio was pretty on point. However, I think I just have a preference for the darker brown and thicker type of Japanese curry. This one is lighter brown in color and pretty runny. Taste isn't bad, but nothing too special either. - Pork belly (3/5): Not really my cup of tea. The pork belly didn't feel that fresh and although some of the fatty pieces had a bit of crunchy char, it didn't pair that well with the curry because of how fatty and thick it is. - Shrimp tempura side (3/5): Comes with 5 pieces ish. Had a meeting in the area. I know from past experience I cannot miss stopping by at Rodeo 39 with all the delicious options they have. I have bookmarked and wanting to try Karē so I was delighted to finally get to try it. I ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry which was a generous portion.
