chicken katsu curry and shrimp tempura
    Angeline N.

My friend and I were walking around Rodeo 39 and decided on this place! We ordered on a kiosk and the food came out really quickly. I was a klutz and accidentally dropped my utensils while bringing my food to the table. It was super embarrassing and honestly I was just gonna walk away shamefully and wipe the spoon and use it anyway, but the nice worker had already grabbed me a new one. We were able to sit at a table nearby since we came on a weekday and it wasn't as busy. They played mostly pop music while we were there yapping and it was a great vibe! The curry itself was pretty good and slightly spicy, which I enjoyed. I thought the chicken katsu was pretty bland and flavorless, but fortunately the curry was packed with flavor so I didn't mind as much. I really enjoyed the side of shrimp tempura and felt like it was definitely better seasoned than the katsu. The proportions were really good and I liked that the curry was in a separate container so my katsu didn't get soggy.

pork belly: grilled pork belly, white rice, curry, pickled radish + green onions = $15

The curry is quite good here. I tried it in two forms: -chicken katsu ($14.00): fried chicken katsu, white rice, curry, pickled radish + green onions -pork belly ($15.00): grilled pork belly, white rice, curry, pickled radish + green onions To be honest, I didn't read the descriptions and instead relied on the picture menu. Based on pictures, I thought the pork belly was breaded. Boy was I wrong. You get 4 generous pieces of grilled pork belly. Pairing it with curry is interesting. Not bad, but not familiar, so I liked it okay. The chicken katsu on the hand was great. I'd definitely order that again. This place is great if you're in the mood for curry.

This is close to where I live, so it's my to go to place whenever I'm craving for chicken or pork curry katsu. The service is very quick, and when ordering now, they have self ordering using touch screen. Don't worry if you don't know how to use or how to order, there will be a person standing in the front kiosk to help you. The chicken filet meat they used is white meat, and yet still tender and juicy. The crispy ness is good, the curry sauce is also taste really good. Portion wise is good with the price. But as for me to get a miso soup for $3, is not worth it. It comes in a small cup, the flavor for me is a bit water down, and the seaweed and tofu is very little, so basically is just a broth soup. So the place is inside the food court. And they have move suites from the old one, where before used to be on the left side from the stage, now it's the opposite side, which is the left side of the stage, closer to the tattoo store in the back (where the Filipino fusion store used to be) The atmosphere at night & weekend will be very loud, because on the stage there's always something going on, from karaoke night, trivia night, a live band or a sporting events. So seating could be a challenge, but you can always find one. So it is good for a big groups, and plenty of variety of foods at this place and also there's a bar that serves alcohol.

Delicious, good price, quick. Katsu is super crispy and curry comes on the side. 12/10 stars would recommend.

Great food and customer service. Cashier Bryan was very kind, and helped me pick out a meal as it was my first time there. Looking forward to coming back again! (Sorry to the cashier if I spelled your name wrong.)

Solid food and i love how they don't have option to tip! I would tip for just for that! Anyways first time at the public market and I chose this to satiate my cravings after a hard workout. I got the fried chicken gyoza plate with a side of fried egg. They also give you a side of chili powder to add which is a must bc I like my curry with a spicy kick. Service is quick but also there was no crowd on a Tuesday late afternoon. For $16 I'd say it's pricey but it's a no frills no hassle place so I could imagine myself coming back if I were in the area and looking for a quick eat.

Newest addiction! We are obsessed with the beef belly curry from here. The beef is extra tender and they make sure to load your bowl with plenty of it. The curry is savory and pairs perfectly with the beef belly and rice. Great bang for the buck. You can easily make two meals out of a single order. Love it here!!

Beef belly curry rice was so good. Think of a yoshinoya beef bowl but elevated... the onions to meat ratio was 1:1 and the meat tasted like it was of high quality and not too fatty. Paired with the japanese curry brought it to the next level. We enjoyed it with the side of red pickled radishes.

Absolutely loved the chicken katsu and curry! The katsu was crispy and the curry was rich with bold flavors. Check it out!

Located in Rodeo 39, this little establishment has been my go to for Japanese curry for a year now. The majority of the time I have it delivered to my house. It's less expensive if you order there in person. The chicken katsu curry is my favorite. The portions are decent as are the prices.

The spam katsu curry was so tasty!! I've been looking everywhere for good crispy spam katsu. Ordering was easy too, the girl standing at the counter helped us, however the kiosk was pretty self explanatory- Food came out within 15-20 minutes! The curry itself wasn't too overpowering either, definitely makes u want to keep eating it.

Went here for the first time. It's located in a marketplace/food court type place. You place your order on a screen. They only accept card or Apple Pay. You pick your food up when it's ready and find a place to sit. My husband and I sat inside and we enjoyed our curry. I got chicken cutlet and curry and my husband got beef belly and curry. They were both delicious!! Got two cans of Diet Coke. One of the best Japanese curries we've had & we've been to Japan. Will definitely be coming back again for more curry! 5 out of 5 stars would recommend to a friend!! (:

We went to Rodeo39 to pick up some cookies from Sweet G's and decided to try this new curry spot. My wife and I used to live near Sawtelle in LA so we have definitely had some solid curry in our day...and I am sad to report that Kare is pretty average. I understand that food prices have gone up and labor is more expensive, but the value proposition that they offer for their chicken katsu curry is just not there. Their labor costs cannot be that high because you literally order on an ipad despite the worker standing right behind it, which is awkward. The portion was average and while the flavor of the curry was good, they have zero customizability on their entrees - I am used to being able to modify the spice level and add various toppings to my dish, none of which, Kare offers. The chicken katsu itself was also average, not the worst, but not special in any way either.

Website Down, refused to take phone orders which.

When he mentioned he was vegan, the server actually informed us that the noodles have egg in it and to swap it out for spinach. We returned a few weeks later and when ordering, he mentioned again he was vegan. The server took our order and mentioned the veggie miso uses veggie broth, no mention of the noodles. Since it was our 2nd visit here, we didn't remember the egg noodles until my bowl came out. We flagged the server down and once again mentioned his dietary restriction and asked if it's too late to sub out the noodles. He mentioned the ramen was already done but could ask the kitchen. We offered to pay for that bowl and taking it to go while they just made a new one for us that was 100% vegan. He said it was fine and they would just remake it. When his food came out, the server lectured us about next time to let him know of any "special requests" that we had ahead of time even though he did mention he was VEGAN when ordering. I nicely informed him we had only been there 1 other time so didn't remember that the noodles were egg noodles. My boyfriend also chimed in saying that we knew it was our mistake and was why we offered to pay for that bowl to go and have them make another one. The server said it wasn't a big deal but continued lecturing us and stating they had to waste an entire bowl of ramen. When my boyfriend received his bowl it was clear to see that they didn't throw it away as the server claimed since his bowl was extremely messy. It looked like the kitchen was upset with us and made the bowl with anger as the toppings were all over the place. While we really enjoyed our first visit, we'll never come back.

Yet, we were seated right away. We ordered two types of ramen and the ramen flavors are similar, with slight variations. I loved the melt-in-your-mouth pork, the broth was hearty, and the noodles were slurpable. We even enjoyed their spiked Japanese selzters. [Missing noodles, expensive ramen, bad customer service, and no reason to come back.]…read more I visited this restaurant to place a to-go order and picked up my food during a late lunch around 1:40 p.m. I ordered two items, including a bowl of tonkotsu ramen. When I got back to work in Santa Ana and opened my bag around 2:30 p.m., my ramen had NO NOODLES. It was literally just broth and toppings. I called the restaurant expecting a simple apology and a reasonable solution. Instead, the manager would not even speak to me directly and chose to communicate through a waiter the entire time, which made the situation even more frustrating. We went back and forth multiple times with the waiter acting as the middleman. First, they told me I could come back and pick up the missing noodles. That was not realistic. I was already back at work, and it takes me about 25 minutes to get from Fountain Valley to Santa Ana. Driving all the way back for a side of noodles made no sense. So I asked for what seemed like the easiest and most reasonable solution: a complimentary bowl of ramen on my next visit. Instead, I was told no, but they could give me "extra noodles" next time. Extra noodles next time? What exactly was that supposed to do for me when I was sitting there hungry with no actual ramen to eat that day? Then the manager, again through the waiter, said she would personally drive noodles to my job. I even told them that did not make sense because by the time she got there, it would be around 4:30 p.m. At that point, my lunch break would be long over, the ramen would be cold, and all of it would be a waste of my time, her time, restaurant resources, and gas. But I agreed, because at that point it was obvious they really did not want to simply offer me a free bowl of ramen on my next visit. And to be clear, I was not asking for some huge free meal. I was asking to be compensated for the ramen I already paid good money for and did not even receive correctly. For how expensive ramen is, that should not have been a difficult ask. About 10 minutes later, the waiter called back and said the manager would give me a free bowl of ramen next time I came in, which was the exact solution I had suggested from the start. I can only assume she realized how far the drive was and how unnecessary and impractical that solution would have been. Mistakes happen. Forgetting the noodles was one thing. But the way this was handled was unnecessarily difficult, inconvenient, and honestly kind of absurd. I did not ask for a refund. I was looking for an apology and some common-sense customer service. Instead, I got a lot of back-and-forth and a manager who would not even speak to me directly. Kudos to the waiter for doing their best to mediate the situation. Even they thought the situation could of been handled differently by the manager. Very disappointing experience. I will not be returning, and I would not recommend this place to others based on how this situation was handled.

These are the sort of eateries I seek out when I go to Japan as they are affordable, filling, and satisfying. Just as they do in Japan, they have a large display case on the wall which is filled with a couple dozen realistic plastic displays of the various plates they offer. It makes it easy to see what you'll be getting and helps me make a decision. I was there for a late lunch and ordered the pork katsu curry plate and also, for an additional fee, added an omelette on top of the rice (omu-curry). I was given a pager by the friendly fellow at the counter and my meal was made in less than ten minutes. I sat and ate in the clean, comfortable food court. The pork was good quality, very tender, with a crunchy panko coating. The rice was done perfectly and the omelette on top was delicious with a buttery taste and soft texture. I loved the curry; it had excellent flavor and complemented the pork well. There were also some slices of hard-boiled egg and some bits of radish on the plate as well as a cabbage salad. My single complaint is that the salad had no dressing so was rather "blah" compared to everything else. I call these places fast-food katsu. They are all over Japan. Tokyo Shokudo's menu is pretty vast and includes a wide range of Japanese comfort foods. From rice bowls to udons and sobas, they've got it all! I went with their Pork Katsu Curry Udon. It wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't terrible. The katsu filet had a nice crisp to it and the curry udon was comforting. I found myself really trying to dig deep to reach the noodles. By the time I got to them, it felt like a lot of the curry had already got soaken up. I think as an udon dish, its components could've been more well rounded.
