Honestly, the rating alone makes me question whether friends and family are padding the reviews, because there's no way this reflects reality. From the moment we walked in, things felt off. The staff seemed confused about seating and completely unwelcoming. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, we were told there would be a 30-minute wait, which made zero sense. While we waited, it was obvious the staff was more focused on laughing and messing around in the kitchen than actually running the floor. When the food finally arrived, it was already room temperature, and the flavor was just... wrong. Nothing tasted fresh or intentional. To make it worse, my daughters ordered three different sushi rolls, and all three were brought out stacked on a single plate. We had to ask for extra plates, something that should never need to be requested. The overall professionalism was nonexistent. The staff looked disheveled, like a group of high schoolers with no direction, and the manager, who didn't even bother wearing a uniform or anything to associate him with the restaurant, gave off a strange, uncomfortable vibe. Another thing: this restaurant brands itself as a "Japanese House of Steaks", yet there was zero steak selection. Not limited, none. At that point, it just felt misleading. The entire operation seems more focused on looking upscale rather than delivering quality food or service. In reality, it comes off as a Japanese wannabe Applebee's. Great restaurant, we showed up as soon as they opened at noon with a reservation and were seated promptly. Unfortunately, because we were only a party of 6, we did not fill the entire grill and were seated with a party of 3. Wish we could have the entire space to ourselves. The low-down: The food is always good, it's great entertainment, and time passes by quickly because there is always something in front of you while you wait for the main course. Fun fact: hibachi-style" is often used in the US to refer to what is really teppanyaki cooking. Hibachi grills are small, portable barbecue grills that are made from cast iron. These grills have an open-grate and typically use charcoal versus Teppanyaki grilling is done using an iron griddle with a flat, solid surface and used to prepare food in front of guests. Teppanyaki grills usually use propane as a heat source for cooking. For my sons 13th b day he chose Kanki (as he does most years) as his birthday dinner. Since I've been coming to the Raleigh location over the past several years, I really felt like it has lost some of its appeal. I can't quite point my finger in what it is, but the restaurant just seems run-down and desolate. Walking inside it was crowded for 5 pm on a Thursday night, since we did not make a reservation we had to wait a few minutes before we were seated (party of 6). Even though they say no reservations necessary, I recommend them. Once seated we had to wait an additional 15 min to see if they could fill the two empty chairs at our table w patrons before getting started with the cooking. It's always entertaining to see the culinary cooking and cutting skills of the chefs while they grill chicken, pork, beef and seafood, along side rice and veggies while also putting on a little show of fun antics. The amount of food is always more than adequate. service was adequate. Okay. We come here each year for my birthday and this year was not a great experience. Despite trying to connect and be nice to the cook, along with paying $50 per person, the cook did absolutely no tricks or funnies of the sort and was a bit of a butt. Roober, the cook, then sucked at portions. Not only did he have an entire extra spatula of rice and gave it to one lady, but he had a horrible idea of proportions to give out for the steak, chicken and shrimp. By the time he had given out everyone servings, I received like five pieces of fillet. Then, he never refilled anybody's sauces unless you asked him too, and then the ladies on the other side of the table, who got double the food we did because of his lack of understanding how to portion the food out, asked for more cream sauce, and he said he didn't have any, in which they thought he was joking and asked again, and he held up the container and shook it around in the air and said I have no more cream sauce. I then told him to go back and get some cream sauce, considering we were the very first table of the entire night, that was completely unacceptable. One of my favorite hibachi places. It's also a great place to celebrate birthdays. I love the experience and the food is usually pretty good but sometimes inconsistent. Read my PROS and CONS below. = HIBACHI EXPERIENCE: If you're not familiar with hibachi here's how it works at Kanki: They will sit you at a table (up to 8 people) with a big flat grill in front of you. After bringing your drinks they will take your orders. You pick one of the meat options (Chicken, Steak, Shrimp, Salmon, Scallops, Vegetables) or the specials (Samurai - Filet and shrimp / Banzai - Chicken, steak and shrimp / or the choice of two). Depending if you're there for lunch or dinner you can to pick soup or salad of both. The guy will cook your food over the grill and you'll watch him cooking while being very interactive, playing around, and setting an onion on fire. It's a great and fun experience. = FOOD: SOUP: I love their soup! It's a clear onion broth with some crispy onions in it! It also comes with mushrooms so if you don't like it or you have allergy make sure to let them know. You can also choose the salad instead. I usually get 2 soups with no mushroom when I go there for dinner. SALAD: If you choose the salad I recommend the ginger dressing. The salad is a mix of lettuce, red cabbage and carrots with the dressing on top. HIBACHI: Every hibachi meat comes with a side of rice and a side of veggies (zucchini, onions, mushrooms). If you don't want veggies just say "no veggies, extra rice" they will just give you more rice instead of the veggies and they don't charge extra for it. If you have any allergy make sure to let them know before. The rice is a fried rice with eggs. For the meat, I love their filet mignon cooked medium rare and I always add a side of broccoli! Tip :They have the best broccoli around! The veggies are also amazing! SAUCES: They give you yumyum sauce (a white/pinkish sauce - contains egg) and ginger sauce on the side (this ginger sauce makes you wanna go to the bathroom later, seriously lol ). = LUNCH x DINNER: Lunch prices are cheaper and you get the same amount of food as dinner. The only difference is that for lunch you only get either a soup or a salad and for dinner you get both soup and salad (or 2 soups or 2 salads if you prefer). You also get 2 pieces of shrimp for dinner, which for me is not worth the extra price. I think dinner is overpriced. Chicken Hibachi for lunch is $12.99 and for dinner it's $20.99 ($8 extra for one extra soup or salad and 2 pieces of shrimp). = PROS: - Best hibachi place around; - Great for entertainment; - Their fried rice is amazing! - The food is very good and the soup is great. - They have the best yumyum sauce! - Great place to go when you're very hungry. You will get a lot of food! - Great place to go for celebrations; - They give you free sorbet for your birthday or anniversary and sing happy birthday in Japanese. = CONS: - It's reservation only. And if you dare to get there without a reservation they're kinda rude to you. That has happened to me twice at the Crabtree location. - The food isn't always consistent. Sometimes it tastes totally different. Last time I visited it the rice tasted different and the salad was just lettuce and dressing. - You will smell like smoke and food afterwards. - Not the best place to go if you want to have a conversation with someone. It's pretty loud and everyone sit very close together. = TIPS: - Choose the grill over take out. I'm never lucky when I get take out. At the grill you can see them cooking it and it's fresh. - Add a side of broccoli. Their broccoli is amazing!! - Get there earlier because this location has limited parking spots. - LOCATION: The North Raleigh location is the best one. I also like the one in Durham because it's prettier and they have more parking spaces than the North Raleigh one. 1 star because I had to chose something and a negative star wasn't an option. This has been the absolutely WORST dining experience of my life. After confirming a reservation, a guest from our dinner party arrived at the restaurant at 540 to secure a 7pm seating. The entire party was at the location at 710. After being lied to repeatedly stating we would be seated in 10-15 minutes as our table was being cleaned, or for the chef to arrive. Our party of 12 was seated at 822 pm. We placed our drink order and food order and at the current time of 852 we haven't received even the drinks. The rest closed at 9pm. What should have been a special event to celebrate my son's birthday have effectively turned into a nightmare experience. I would sooner go to McDonalds and ever come to this absolutely garbage establishment again. **bonus the management saw it fit to offer 3 free appetizers for the "inconvenience " We have small children in the party not sure "inconvenience" is the word I would use to describe this absolutely miserable experience. I will NEVER recommend or visit another KANIS again. Absolutely awful. I can't even review the food bc I haven't gotten any and will be taking my food to go for my 1.2 hour drive home. 3.5 - This was a good hibachi restaurant with decent prices and menu selections. We went on the night before New Year's Eve and we didn't have to wait long to be seated (less than 20 minutes). The front desk/welcome staff were not very friendly and spent most of the time talking to each other. Someone from our party had come in just before us to check on the wait time and were told it would be 20 minutes. We came in a few minutes later and let them know we had already been helped and that we were with the person who had just come in. One of the servers rolled her eyes and had attitude for whatever reason. We asked to look at a menu but they just pointed to the counter where a stack of menus were. Not friendly or helpful. The overall hibachi experience was fun but the chef was not as interactive as others we've had. Still, it was a fun experience and they did very well with our orders and even made some special requests for other guests at our table. The food was pretty standard hibachi with salad and clear soup to start, then veggies, rice and meat. We also got two shrimps as a starter. All was cooked well but was a little overly salty/too much soy sauce. We've had better at other hibachi restaurants that wasn't as salty. It was even more so the next day when eating our leftovers. The change really hasn't been for the better. The first time was many years ago and the chef was extremely skilled at every move being made.... from flipping things around, cutting the protein, and even interacting with the guests. It's almost as if they actually trained the chefs before allowing them to entertain the guests. Today, and maybe we can blame the lack of people wanting to work, and all the other issues post-pandemic, or maybe it's just that Kanki just gives them a few tips and releases them to herd for hands on experience (just don't flip any knives, please!), but the entertainment (the one reason you can justify the higher prices on the menu) was a bit on the drab side. The only flipping going on was a salt/pepper shaker into the hat and a lemon onto a grilling fork. The restaurant was actually nice around the bar area, but as you get herded to your seats, and by that I truly mean they wait for an entire table of guests to show and then take all of us to the tables set up really close together (another change to the first time where tables were close only in pairs facing away from each other with the chefs in the middle aisle). With all those people gathered in one little area, the place was N-O-I-S-Y! There was a constant flow of people into the restaurant so highly suggest you make reservations via the OpenTable app. The food was at least fresh tasting since it is all cooked in front of you, so definitely a step above the typical Hibachi fast food place scattered all around town. I'd say the highlight from a taste perspective is the ginger dressing in the salad. Outside of that, it was just ok. I'm really not sure how to recommend this place. I guess if you're looking for the entertainment value, it's going to be a hit or miss depending on the skill of the chef.... a seasoned one would probably do a better show, but I didn't see many doing much more than the one we had. If you're looking for fresh food, it does have that since it's all brought out raw and cooked in front of you. If you get REALLY lucky and hit the trifecta, you get the salad with ginger dressing, a skilled chef and THEN either order the hibachi shrimp (or see someone else order it) and have the chef slice and dice the shrimp with speed and accuracy, slicing down the vein to split it, cutting off the tail and cutting the shrimp in half... tails all thrown to one side and body to the other... that's a cool sight to see! Since the shrimp comes split, I doubt that part of the show even exists anymore. If you don't get a skilled chef, at least you get a decent meal...... and a much thinner wallet :-) read more

So...I can't count how many times we've been to this restaurant over the years. It typically serves as our go-to for birthdays and special occasions. Admittedly, we haven't been in a year or so, and I was definitely surprised at how much had changed. The friendly atmosphere at the front, the extra chairs and benches in the lobby area--all gone. Only two benches remain in the front entrance. The bar, not so friendly, missing some seating, and just not an area I'd want to congregate. It took 10 min for the bartender to notice us while we were waiting. When we were seated finally, the server was fine, but as the night progressed, he disappeared. I'm not sure if this was due to short staff or what. It was my daughter's birthday, and though they sang at practically every table and brought out the customary sherbet and candle, she was overlooked (and yes, they were told). As for our chef, he did the normal routine and was nice. However, for some reason he cooked everything completely separate. The chicken was cooked last, which meant my daughter's and my food (the rice and veggies) was cold by the time we got the protein. Everyone else got their shrimp and salmon before the rice was even started. It was very odd and this has never happened in the past. The portions were not as large as in the past. I realize there are shortages all around, but for $21.99 (chicken) and $26.99 (shrimp), I expect to leave with a lot of food. This was the first time we were with a couple who shared a plate, and maybe that had something to do with our portions being smaller, since everyone was given equal amounts of veg/rice? I'm not sure since I've never been in that situation before. The fact that he cooked everything separately might have been due to them as well, but I'm not sure. Either way, it was not a good experience compared to our past. My eldest kept saying, "they are going downhill." As we were leaving, after waiting 30 min for the bill and not receiving any acknowledgement of my daughter's birthday, I stopped by the bathroom. It was completely flooded, to the point where I was walking in water. The caution sign was inside the bathroom, and not outside the door, where water was coming out. I ordered the appetizer Japanese lollipops which are lamb chops. My food was brought out in a timely manner but the lamb chops were overcooked and had a lot of fat on them. I've eaten from this location several times (sometimes inside and sometimes to go) and the to go food isn't worth the price to me. It's almost like they don't put as much love into it, plus to go portions are smaller - it's like more rice and less veggies/meats. So, if you truly wanna eat here eat inside. The hibachi chicken or hibachi shrimp is great! Firecracker sushi (minus the fish eggs) is amazing but not spicy at all. Service is cool. Just close down already!  You are perpetually understaffed, can never seem to seat anyone, have no Hibachi experience anymore (everyone sits in the bar area) and the hosting staff is rude. Here's a tip: When you are struggling to fill your restaurant, you should not be rude to the people walking through your doors.  If you can't handle customers, then shut the place down. I placed a curbside order and included a tip since I knew I wasn't able to come inside and had a limited amount of time. I followed the instructions via the email and the signage upon arrival that indicate to call 919-876-4157 upon arrival for pickup. I was asked to provide my name, order, vehicle description and to put my hazard lights on as someone would be there. 10 minutes came to pass and I called back since I had allotted additional time from the expected pickup time and was again asked for all my details and the young lady who answered the phone placed me on hold to confirm that my order had indeed been ready and that in her words, "eventually someone will bring it to you" and she proceeded to laugh. In all my experience with food service, I've never had that sort of response and lack of concern especially since at this point it was over 30 minutes combined from the time of pickup. I ended up actually going inside only to find that my food had been ready for a while and had to speak to 2 people since the First Lady walked off. Ridiculous to say the least! Visited Kanki to celebrate a family birthday and had a really lovely time. We were seated with a mom and her young son and it was just a perfect match. Our server was friendly and very attentive. Drinks brought out quickly, soup arrived soon after and the green salad with that yummy ginger dressing was out soon, too! Our hibachi chef was the highlight of our dinner. He was funny, friendly and really put on a great show. Our table ordered chicken, steak and shrimp entrees - he got everyone's orders correct and the food was very good. After our meal, three servers came out and brought my daughter a birthday dessert with a candle and sang to her. It was great! Overall, the experience lasted about 1 1/2 hours and it flew by. The chef was very entertaining, food was great, every employee was friendly, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was casual and very welcoming. I much prefer this location over the Crabtree Mall one (our experience there on Mother's Day was not very good). And, I saw some comments on the restroom renovation, they are complete and the bathrooms are clean and very nicely decorated. All brand new! Highly recommend this Kanki location. Food and fun! Kanki features Americanized Japanese hibachi prepared by a chef right in front of you. They also have a complete sushi menu and you can eat in the sushi bar, as well as a full cocktail bar. Looking at the other reviews, here are a couple of tips: - The carryout food often doesn't taste as good as the dine-in. Dining in is definitely a concern when Covid-19 is spreading, but also realize that carryout may not be as good. - Make a reservation to increase the chances that you'll get seated quickly and they have enough staff to serve you. - Like many restaurants currently (February 2022), their prices have gone up and staffing is inconsistent. I won't criticize this one restaurant for challenges that occur at most restaurants and I appreciate everyone doing the best they can these days. Hibachi dining is different from most restaurants and more fun. Your table is a giant frying pan grill that seats 10 people, so you may sit with other parties. While your waiter or waitress serves you salad, soup, and drinks, your chef prepares everyone's multicourse meal right in front of you. Everyone gets fried rice, vegetables, and a shrimp appetizer. You get to choose your meat: options include filet or ribeye steak, chicken, shrimp, and scallops. Dinner is a show as the chef chops up and cooks up every course right in front of you with flambé flare. Kids especially enjoy all the showmanship. This place was the biggest let down ever as far as hibachi is concerned. My friend and I went here and we were rushed to an already packed table and that was super uncomfortable and everyone had already ordered so the waiter was rushing us to order. The food was not great at all and this was the first time ever that i didn't have a to-go box at a hibachi place. They don't even ask if people want fried egg in their rice... Save your $30 per person and go somewhere better... I'll never go back. read more
