I can't tell you whether I just got to be the unlucky one, but wanted to share this story. My JURA Z8 went into Kanen last November after the grinder got stuck. They performed their diagnosis and provided an estimate, which ended up at ~$935. When I picked it up right before Christmas, I was told that nothing was really wrong with it, they just took it apart and performed a deep cleaning service, and I should use the machine normally and perhaps run the cleaning cycle more regularly than when it asks for (it's fully automated) to avoid the problem repeating. Did as advised. After getting it back, I noticed that the grinder wasn't quite "packing" the coffee grounds as tightly as before - there was always a little loose coffee around as well - but it made coffee, so I wasn't overly concerned. Not until a couple of weeks ago when it started making an awful mechanical grinding sound at the end of making coffee. It started small and wasn't consistent but it was getting worse so I eventually reached back out to Kanen. That's when I learned that it is practically impossible to reach these folks with a problem. Sure, you can schedule a new appointment on the website (with a non refundable fee) but that's about it. I tried calling and leaving a VM, sending email, texting, repeat ad nauseum. Eventually one of their techs sent me a dry email response, but by that time the machine fully died - and as you can see from the picture, the reason for all the trouble is that Kanen didn't properly put it back together when they serviced it... That little bolt fell onto the tray slot out of (I assume) the brew group, which is now broken. I asked again that someone call me. Nada. Then they texted me to see if I was happy with their response... At that point I lost all trust in them and reached out to JURA directly, where I am sending my machine now, paying $500 to fix the mistake that Kanen charged almost $1000 to create in the first place. I sent a long text with the same image to them and the final answer from them was... Drumroll please... "I am just an admin" and wishing me good luck with JURA (I kid you not). I still have not received a call back, even after all of that (you'd think a small business owner would be concerned especially after I sent them all this information a couple of days ago). Their comms are atrocious. Their ownership of their work is disastrous. Again, I may simply be the unlucky one, as others clearly have had a good experience with this place. They are very nice in person, but this is not a place I would recommend to anyone myself, ever. JURA can be hard to get a hold of on the phone, which is why I went to Kanen in the first place, but if you have one of their automated machines, my suggestion is send it to them. It's worth the extra hassle. Right now I'm looking into whether I can still open a dispute over the CC charges for the December "work" Kanen did, but in the meantime, wanted to share the story here.

Highly recommend Zuta Appliance Repair!!!…read more Mergen came out to diagnose and repair my 13 year old fridge - I can't say enough good things about the service I received from him! About a month ago, I had an ice dam in my fridge's freezer drawer, which I cleared on my own because I thought that perhaps the freezer hadn't been closed properly which can cause this to happen. Fast forward one month, on a Wednesday morning I reach into the main fridge compartment and realize it's not cold. Same problem - there's an ice dam in the lower freezer drawer. Now I realize this is a problem for the professionals. I call the appliance repair folks I've used in the past and they can give me an appointment for two days later (Friday) for a diagnosis; then it will be sometime the following week when they'll return with the parts to fix the problem, presuming it's fixable. I feel a bit panicky and trapped with the problem, but I take the appointment. After drinking my coffee my brain comes to life and I start searching Yelp for appliance repair companies with lots of good reviews and I came across Zuta. I also looked at the unhappy reviews and I liked how Zuta responded to these reviewers as well, so I gave them a call. At first I wasn't sure it was going to work out, but then I scored an appointment for 1-3pm the same day - yay! At about noon, Mergen texted me and he said he'd be at my place in 25 mins - now he was running early - that's even better!! He arrived when he said he would and presented himself in a very professional manner. I told him my story and he said it was likely one of three things and in about 15 minutes he'd narrowed in down to the control board. So gave me an estimate on the total repair and parts, then he asked if I'd like to be able to use my fridge while we waited for the parts to arrive, likely the following week. Of course I said YES. So he took the back of the freezer compartment off and we could see the completely frozen coils, which he set about defrosting with a steaming tool. It took at least 30 mins to melt all of that ice and he was so patient the entire time. The drip pan overflowed, so he pulled out the fridge, took off a back panel, and siphoned the water out of it, and then together we mopped up the floor. The icemaker wasn't functioning anymore either, so he added that part to the order as well for less than the one I was planning to buy elsewhere. When he left, I had a functioning fridge and was able to go out for the evening without any worry about the fridge and my food. He said it would last until the parts came in. Only two days later, on Friday, he texted me and said he could come by to complete the repairs. We agreed on a time to meet and he was there! In less than 30 minutes, he'd install the control board and the new ice maker, and the freezer and fridge compartments started to get cold. He showed my how my ice maker also had water in the tray. He said he'd text later to check how things were progressing and he left. About 10-15 minutes later, he was back at my door because he wanted to ensure he'd correctly programmed the control board (it's a universal part) and he showed me what he was doing, verified it was correct and left again. At about 7:30, Mergen texted me and asked if the ice maker was making ice and it was. In fact, it's been making about a load an hour ever since! And the fridge ran continuously for about 24 hours, then settled into it's normal rhythm - which it hadn't had for a very long, long time. So, I was never without a fridge and didn't lose any food and my fridge was permanently back in business in two days, which it would not have been if I'd gone with my old repair place. Fingers crossed I won't, but should I need appliance repair in the future I know who I'm calling!

Homewise (formerly Airport Appliance) comes through again with exceptional local service!…read more We have bought many appliances from Airport Appliance in the past--which is now Homewise. I was initially a bit worried that the business had been absorbed into a national chain, but it turned out to be just a name change with the same great local ownership. Most recently, our wall oven went dead on the 4th of July. We called Homewise and spoke with Lyla Vo, who was fantastic at advising us on replacement options. While working with her, we also decided to replace our 15-year-old dishwasher to take advantage of a two-item extra rebate! Over the years, we've tried other options in the area, but Homewise strikes the perfect balance: Vs. High-End Local Outfits: Higher-end stores seem bothered if you aren't remodeling an entire kitchen. Even though we'd bought from them before, they lacked interest when we only needed a single replacement item. Vs. Big National DIY Chains: Big-box stores are a headache. Twice, their installers walked out refusing to complete the job due to minor water, power, or circuit compliance issues. While those may have been on our end due to older coding, there was zero flexibility or real-time planning--they are bound strictly by corporate liability rules and won't work with you on the spot. Plus, you're basically dealing with a website, not a human. Why Homewise Wins: Even though we handled everything over the phone with Lyla, the entire experience was seamless. When we had follow-up questions, Lyla even responded from her phone after her shift was over! That kind of personal, above-and-beyond care is rare. On top of that, the installation process was super smooth, and they strictly honored their 4-hour delivery window. Homewise delivers the exact feel of working with a reliable, friendly neighborhood salesperson. Next time an appliance needs replacing, we're heading straight back to them. Please keep supporting local businesses like this one!

I found Bay Area Appliance Installation after reading their reviews on both Yelp and Google. What stood out to me was their experience not only with appliance installation, but also with countertop cutting, including Corian, which is what we have. When I called Paul, he was already booked about two weeks out, so we scheduled the next available appointment. He provided a four-hour arrival window two days beforehand and arrived within that timeframe. Paul and his team member professionally cut the Corian countertop, installed and secured the new cooktop, and tested everything in less than an hour. The cooktop fits perfectly and the finished installation looks clean and well done. They also went above and beyond by taking away the cooktop box and plastic packaging and bringing our old cooktop down to the garage for us. I had told them I did not need haul-away service for an additional cost, so I really appreciated that they still helped move it out of the kitchen instead of leaving it there. We were very happy with their professionalism, efficiency, and quality of work. Pricing was fair, and I would definitely recommend Paul and Bay Area Appliance Installation to anyone needing appliance installation or countertop modifications.
