Our first trip here was very enjoyable and we look forward to returning. We had three different lamb dishes and they were all superb. The zardalou challow is a dish of lamb chunks in a savory and sweet apricot sauce, which was very unique and very good. The lamb chops were perfectly cooked and the lamb kebabs were juicy and savory and amazing. The cilantro walnut sauce they provide on the side was outstanding - next time I'm definitely asking for more! The only less than stellar part of the meal was the naan, which was hard and dry. There is not a lot of ambiance in the space, but the food is solid and some of the flavors were unexpected in a very good way. If you are looking for a meat and rice based meal that is fairly quick, this is a great option. read more

We absolutely adore Kandahar. We came here on a beautiful Saturday and had amazing service and even better food. We had a group of 6 and that didn't stop us from being treated like family. The food here is seriously something you just have to experience. It's aromatic and flavorful, and you have to get the pomegranate juice to complement it. Everything is vibrant. The meat just falls apart it's so tender. Hampden is full of amazing places to eat, but don't overlook Kandahar just because it's small. It's tiny but mighty. read more

we came here on a friday night. most restaurants surrounding were completely full for hours, but luckily they were able to seat us right away here. they have extensive vegetarian options. we ordered the bolani, which is two fried pastries with differenet fillings. one had potatoes, and one had leeks and they were served with a yogurt-based sauce. the yogurt based sauce was the star of the show here, and one of my friends kept it for her entree. for my entree, i ordered the shaftalou challow. it's advertised as served with dried peaches, but mine actually had fresh peaches which i prefer. the cucumber tomato salad was a really nice fresh bite alongside the chicken and rice. the portions were perfect; i could've taken some home if i wanted to but i powered through and cleared my plate. the service here was exceptional. the server was extremely friendly and personable, and when my friend got some undercooked chicken they replaced her meal and comped it. i am very pleased with the quality of my experience here and will absolutely return to try other things in the future. read more

Never had Afghan before but had a great experience and really enjoyed my meal/service that I can't wait to return. The place had a bunch of seating in the front but you can just head to the back to place your order. I got the Mantu entree. It was prepared quick and was very flavorful. The individual taking my order was very informative and gave me recommendations. He was so friendly I ended up buying three different drinks because I wanted to try them all after talking with him. Since it was my first time eating Afghan I can't say how it stacks up but I enjoyed my meal and their service was amazing which is more important to me. read more

I got the Vegetarian Mantu (Afghan style dumplings filled with onions and topped with yogurt and a yellow split peas and carrots, served with pallow [rice]) and Vegetarian Dolma (baby eggplant filled with spinach simmered in sun-dried tomatoes and herb sauce, served with challow [rice] and shalgham [turnip]). Both were delicious, but the dumplings really stood out! My takeout also came with bread (which I wasn't expecting!) and a delicious green dipping sauce (I'm not totally sure what it was, but the staff member who handed me my takeout said it contains walnuts as an allergen warning.) Visited last night for the first time with family. It was pretty quiet when we got there around 5:15pm but picked up about an hour in. The server was pretty attentive when we got there but then as it got busier, seemed to drop the ball a bit. He didn't come back to refill water and forgot to bring a second order of naan. The place has a good amount of seating and is pretty much self seating. Spots by the window or by the kitchen, plenty to choose from. No ambiance whatsoever, just a sit down and go or take out type of place. The people in my party were impressed with the food, I felt it was just okay. We ordered many appetizers but I just had the mantu. It was fine. My seekh kabob bowl was fine, but the lamb was very dry. Overall, not my favorite. I think the rest of the people I ate with would love to come back but I wouldn't. read more

This is probably my favorite restaurant in Baltimore! I've been many times, including today on a Saturday evening. and whether it's packed or not, the food is always served quickly and service is excellent. I particularly enjoy the Aushak, Mantu, and Kabuli Pallow, but everything on the menu is great. Takeout is just as good, but I like to sit because it feels peaceful to be there--soft Afghan music plays in the background, thoughtful decor invites you to be curious about Afghani cultural heritage, and maybe weird to add, but the bathroom is really nice lol. We got takeout from this place and it was incredible! The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I would 100% recommend again and again!

Two of us came to Kandahar last night (Saturday) to check out the new place on the Avenue in Hampden. We waited 30 minutes for a table. We waited 30 minutes to get the water we had ordered with food. We waited an hour for the food to come out. We had arrived at 6pm and didn't get home until almost 8. The carryout/pickup orders seem to monopolize kitchen time. there is no lobby, per se, and we were seated by the door. Basically, all of the waiting people stood next to us as we ate. We all politely ignored each other. The food was fabulous! We had the baby pumpkin appetizer, Chicken Kabuli Pallow, and the Chicken Lawand (which had some heat!) Also, the portions are very generous. My bowl is enough for two people. We may be back but will order out and pick up, not sit inside. read more

We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Assad Akbari, the owner, who greeted us with a smile and a handshake. His love for sharing his culture and flavor are evident in the taste and beauty of every dish. I had my first meal at Kandahar with my family tonight. I was amazed by the rich spices and sauces with my meal as well as the friendly and informed service from our host Sadiq. He suggested we try the pomegranate juice prior to our meal and it was phenomenal! We had lamb, chicken, and salmon. Each protein was cooked to perfection and generously portioned. I used to dine at The Helmand quite often since its opening in 1989 and the food used to be great. It's still fine, but Kandahar is a lot better, and it's because Assad left The Helmand to open his own restaurant -- Kandahar. He is the chef and key ingredient that makes the food at Kandahar really fabulous. It's the way food at The Helmand used to be. It's truly delicious. The ambiance at Kandahar is a bit stark and could use some softening and dimming. The decor is evolving for sure. But go for the food and the service. You won't be disappointed. read more

I've been to Kandahar at least three times now, and it's a good spot if you're craving Afghan cuisine or if you want some healthy options. It's become my husband's go to restaurant for take out after work, and I feel like he's tried most of the menu by now. My favorite dishes so far are their aushak and mantu, but I have enjoyed their lamb entrees as well. (I do think that some of the vegetarian dishes are a little under-seasoned and could use some salt or acid to boost them a bit?) The service is excellent (very helpful and friendly even if a tiny bit slow - they can get busy and don't have a huge wait staff for dining in). The restaurant is nice - cozy, homy, casual. I placed an order thru Grub Hub.. The food arrived piping hot ( only a 5 min drive from me). I got a cubed lamb dish in a velvety pumpkin puree of some kind with perfect Afghani spices! After noting my favorite dishes (Shaftallou Challow and Kabuli Pallow, and several side dishes) they walked me through their recommendations on what to order two days in advance. I showed up and the food was ready and still hot and fresh too! Their team helped load this steamy aromatic food into my car and the rest is history. They provided ample food that my family and friends raved about, and the process was seamless. Kabuli Pallow - aromatic rice mixed with sweet surprises from raisins, topped off with tender chunks of delicious well seasoned lamb. Fantastic for large parties, easy to serve. Just tried Kandahar for the first time on a Thursday night, and I'm so glad I did! The food is incredible, magnificent, an absolute treasure. I'm vegetarian, and there were lots of great looking options for me. We had the kadoo appetizer, the vegetarian dolma, the vegetarian platter, and a small order of bread. Everything was fantastic. Really nothing that was "just okay." There were five other parties dining or ordering take-out while we were there, and we literally heard every one of them rave to the staff about how great the food was. Really happy to have them in the neighborhood. Casual, low-key atmosphere. Nothing fancy, but very clean and comfortable. Friendly service. The waiter made sure to ask about any nut allergies before recommending what to put the complimentary walnut sauce on (turns out its amazing on everything, though) and was attentive about refilling waters. It's kind of unclear when you walk in if you should take a seat or order at the front. We asked and we're told either is fine. The staff are friendly and helpful. They're a small spot just starting out with a small front-of-house staff, at least when we were there, but they'll definitely take care of you. I'll be back often! read more
