Happened to come out a very busy night where there was a show at the theater close by. The tables were not bussed as quickly. Also, all meals required a 18% gratuity fee, which is not ideal. One of the best restaurants ever. It is very conveniently next to Hippodrome and they do a great job keeping the place clean when busy. The service is quick and friendly. Maiwand Grill is conveniently located across the street from the Hippodrome. Wanting to grab a bite before a show, we opted for a sit down warm meal and the first time visit here was just ok. The dining space is open and plenty of seating throughout. True casual dining where you self seat and grab a table first, then order, and staff will bring your food to you. I like to enjoy and feel the warmth of my meal and the metal seat was cold and translates "eat and go". I am not a fan of metal chairs but that's just me. For this visit, we chose the chicken shawarma and the chicken and shrimp kabob platter. After two bites, the chicken shawarma fell apart and quickly became sloppy. Disappointing as these were not sliced but more like chopped chicken and didn't taste fresh, pre-made feel to it. It was missing the snap from the vegetables and the bread itself was soggy. The chicken and shrimp kabob were reported delicious. We also ordered a mango lassi and was sad to learn it was pre-made and stored in the nearby fridge with the rest of the grab and go drinks. The taste barely hit the mark, otherwise if it were made fresh would've tasted different. While the service was quick and transactional, the food left much to be desired. Food here is good. I usually come here for lunch. They have a different daily lunch special for about $10.99, which is a good deal. The only issue I have is the consistency of their food. I got a chicken gyro platter and this past time they barely put any fries. I literally got 7 fries thrown on top of my platter. In the past, I have gotten a whole side of fries. The same goes with the Afghan Tea ($5.99 for a pot). Sometimes I get a black tea, sometimes it is a green tea. In terms of the service, you have to bus your own table, which sometimes is an issue because they have trash receptacles with a swing door. It gets messy sometimes. They have a decent sized dining area, but there is limited street parking available. read more

Food: The cuisine here is excellent. Let me start with the sambusa. I've had many many sambusas in my life, but never anything like the Maiwand Grill sambusa! I don't know what recipe they're using, but these are the best sambusas I've ever had. Firstly, they came out in mini frying cages, instead of plates. I absolutely love this place as I've stated in many of my reviews of this place, it is my absolute favorite go to when I am too tired or too busy to cook at home. I always order the same thing most of the time the salmon because that of course is my go-to. I don't eat meats and I'm trying to get away from shrimp so the salmon never ever fails me. My food comes pretty fast even though I live about 20 minutes away. You can never go wrong with this dish or any of the other dishes. As you can see in the picture, I am not sure what they thought that I ordered. I have ordered from this place plenty of times and it has always been good. So of course after ordering I thought I would go home and enjoy a great meal. Instead, I get a tub of rice with a sprinkling of Gyro meat, and a tablespoon of salad. I guess they threw on the french fries for a good measure. I did not order french fries because I have a bad gluten allergy and I know that their french fries are coated in flour. When I walk in the young women behind the counter are laughing and not paying attention to me. I had to let them know that I was there for a pick up order. In the poring rain this food warmed my soul, and kept me satisfied for the rest of the evening. Food: Before you order check out the daily specials. I ordered the Tuesday special: a spiced chicken, rice, salad and homemade flatbread. It was delicious! I used the flatbread to scrape the bowl clean. The falafel was hot and crispy with the cool herbaceous sauce was simple perfect. Ambiance: It's very cozy, the decor is beautiful throughout the restaurant. Service: Friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I had 45 minutes until showtime and we were out within 30 minutes. I have never been treated so poorly by a business establishment in my life. The level of resistance, lack of accountability, and outright accusation from the staff member--especially the man at the pick-up counter--was appalling. I spent my money and all I asked for was the complete and correct order. When I arrived, I clearly identified my bag on the pick-up shelf with my name and a list of items ordered. The male employee at the counter initially told me the order was not mine, stating it was a different order. It was only after I repeated my full name and confirmed the contents that he grudgingly admitted, "Oh yeah, it's yours." After beginning to eat, I realized my order of three chicken and lamb kabob meals contained only one white sauce and one green sauce. I immediately returned to ask for two additional sets of sauces (one of each per meal, for a total of three of each). The same employee insisted he had packed the bag and that I was incorrect, claiming I already had three sauces. He eventually provided the requested sauces, but again insisted he knew what he put in the bag and that I was wrong. The final, and most infuriating, issue was with the bread. I found my bag contained only the standard naan bread that comes with each meal, not the Garlic Naan I had paid extra for. I returned to the store a third time, showed the employee the three pieces of naan that clearly had no garlic, and requested the correct item. At this point, the employee's behavior became completely unacceptable. He stated he knew what he put in the bag and accused me of lying about the bread. He then escalated the situation by claiming I had also lied about the sauce and even about the number of meals I had purchased. All I was asking for was the correct food I had paid for. To be repeatedly called a "liar" by an employee in front of other customers was an incredibly humiliating and utterly unprofessional experience. This was the most degrading experience I have ever had from an establishment. Due to the staff's complete disregard for customer service and their willingness to accuse a paying customer, I will not be patronizing this business again, nor will my family. read more
