Update: Sadly have to give them 3 stars now. I really wanted to for them the benefit of the doubt re: our slow service on my first visit (review below). Went back 2 weeks ago and the service was very slow and disorganized. Arrived ahead of the rest of my party (3 of us in total), and out our name in. Was told 15 minutes and waited 30. A few other groups without reservations were seated ahead of us and another waiting couple-I think because they were 4 and 6 tops. There were empty tables. Hostess told us that they couldn't fill them because the kitchen wouldn't be able to keep up. When we were seated we waited we were given 1 menu to share. 10 minutes later we got two more menus and we asked for wine glasses and water. 15ish minutes after we got our wine glasses, I flagged down the waiter and we ordered our food. 10-15 more minutes 1 app came out, after it was finished and cleared, we got our sushi. Another 10 after we finished that our dinners came out. Start to finish our meal (arrived 7:00 on a Friday) including our wait to be seated took 2.5 hours. Food is average. First time I went there table was dirty and needed to be cleaned. Steamed dumplings are outstanding. Was charged a corking fee to bring in a bottle of wine. Absolutely the best sushi I've had in state college hands down, I had the kobe roll and it was AMAZING. Their dumplings are perfectly cooked and I usually don't like miso, but I tried my friend's and it actually wasn't bad at all. I visited PSU from out of town and wanted to grab sushi but was unsure of my options until I came across Kamrai on Yelp. I'm so glad I tried it out. I ordered the calamari (fried), white dragon roll, green tea and green tea ice cream. Everything was amazing including the service. The staff here is so sweet and helpful. Excellent Asian fusion place in a pretty little town within Happy Valley. Their Thai food is exceptional, though their sushi is also very very good. We recommend their pad Thai and duck dishes, which are the best of their kind we've had in the area. Went here for the first time for lunch on 11/4. I had the fried calamari and drunken noodles. My wife had the chicken satay and pad thai. Calamari was cooked well but not seasoned at all. I would not get it again but will try the grilled option. The drunken noodles were fantastic. My wife loved both her dishes. Service was excellent and staff was very friendly. We will definitely be going back. I just wish they didn't charge for byob. I can't give 5 stars until a visit when they are busy to see how good the service is. This is by far the best Thai place I've eaten. 1) tomgha soup delicious vegetable pieces to big but otherwise a perfect way to start. 2) bomb dumping 6 pieces scrumptious losts of filling. 3) cucumber crab roll (can't remember exact name) beautifully put together tastes just as good. 4) main course spicy drunkin noodles and ginger chicken both yummy. Large helping fresh vegetables large bowl of rice. The wait staff were very good. Each piece to our meal came out at good times. Nice atmosphere. Only cons drove by it and didn't see it. The sushi here was super good, as well as the thai food. The sashimi platter tasted fresh and the drunken noodles were some of the best I've had. One thing to note though, the restaurant is super quaint and in a house so there is limited seating. My boyfriend and I arrived at 5 PM on a Friday and were seated immediately, but within the next hour the restaurant became full and there was a line out the door. I've been going to Kamrai regularly ever since it opened and I've never been disappointed! It's a great Thai and Sushi restaurant with an extensive menu, friendly atmosphere, and attentive service. The sushi is the best in the State College area: the fish is super-fresh and the rolls are very generous in size and beautifully presented. The Thai dishes are equally wonderful. I've tried several of the curry dishes and they have all been great. The dishes are so beautifully presented (chef Ken is an "artist") that I often can't help but admire them for a while before taking the first bite. This is my favorite place in State College for sushi. I've never gotten a bad roll here. The Lobster roll is amazing and the eel is great too; They really all are. I may say the rolls are amazing, but my favorite thing in the menu is the Tom Yum soup. I have had this soup at every restaurant that offers it and none of them are remotely as good as this restaurants. My wife was in Thailand and she says that this Tom Yum is the closest to there as she has ever had. read more

Met a friend here for dinner a few nights ago. Althoughshe had been there a few times, tt was my first. I found the decor attractive and the staff pleasant and helpful. I arrived second and was shown to the table where my friend was already seated, with a bottle of wine opened. The server gave us our menus and then a reasonable amount of time to chat and peruse the menu before returning to take our order. We were not in a hurry, so we appreciated the time to get settled and start our conversation. Since this was my first visit, I ordered an old favorite, the Spicy Noodle with Chicken, in order to be able to judge it against other favorite restaurants both in State College and other cities. Again, as it was my first visit, I asked for mildly spicy. The dish came and it was presented with a pretty vegetable flower on the side - very appealing. I was glad that I did not ask for spicy, since I felt the mild was spicier than many mediums in central PA. The portion was generous, but certainly not enough to take half home for lunch the next day, as I can often do in other restaurants. I ate and thoroughly enjoyed every bite! My companion ordered the miso soup and a sushi selection. The soup came in a cute covered bowl and she enjoyed it very much. The sushi was stunningly presented - it looked like the ridged back of a stegosaurus and there was no doubt that it was tasty. She, too, ate every bite. We were not rushed, despite the fact that we declined dessert. We continued to sit and talk. (Tipping appropriately for the privilege). When the check came I offered to pay the corkage fee, but our server said we would not be charged., explaining that it is not necessary for a small party with only one bottle of wine. She said they have had large parties with many bottles who have stayed for very long periods of time to chat and drink. The prices here are a little higher than in other local Thai restaurants, but the atmosphere makes the difference. This is dining - the restaurant is not noisy and bustling and there is a sense of civility. In a college town it's nice to be among grownups every now and then. This building has sat empty for a couple years now and as a Lemont resident I am incredibly excited that a new restaurant has moved in. I am even more excited to report that the food is very good. Our party of six did not order sushi (next time!), but everyone was pleased with their Thai dish. We got a range of entrees and appetizers like steamed snapper, pumpkin curry and crispy duck. The ingredients were fresh, the dishes were bright, and most of the portions were generous. Service was slow, but attentive. The ambiance was much more adult and enjoyable than Cozy Thai downtown. So why might I take a star off? Two main reasons. First, they are BYOB, but charge a corkage fee for wine AND beer ($3). Admittedly, it's a small fee to pay. However, as someone who would much rather pay a premium for the convenience of being able to order a beverage of choice with my meal, it irks me that I am now charged for the privilege of supplying my own beverage. Since BYOB restaurants do not have to pay for a liquor license and are not losing money by allowing outside alcohol, this fee is presumably for glassware and the server's time. Considering we are already paying for a meal, $3 seems a bit steep to be provided a couple of glasses and a beer bottle opener. This brings me to my second complaint (which may be more of a warning): The prices at Kamrai will make the average State College resident do a double take. Compared to my usual Thai place, My Thai on Westerly, every entree was about $2-$3 more. For example, at Kamrai all curry dishes started at $12.95 (tofu, chicken, or pork), while the same dishes start at $9.95 at Mai Thai. This was also true of house specialties such as Masamun Curry with Chicken Leg ($15.95). Even the edamame ($4.95) was about a buck more than your typical State College Japanese place. Arguably, I am paying more for better ingredients, however as someone that eats mostly vegetarian, I find it hard to justify paying $13 for a tofu dish. Will I be back? Sure. This place has good food and is down the street from my house. However, instead of becoming my "go-to" place like I was hoping, it will be a once in a while treat. Slightly lowering the prices (particularly for cheap, vegetarian dishes) and getting rid of the BYOB charge would bring me, and my invited guests, back a lot more. read more

I LOVE KAMRAI! This place is probably my favorite place to eat in Centre County (yes, the whole county). It's in a beautiful Victorian in the middle of Lemont and the interior is gorgeous. They used to take reservations and fill up fast, but now they no longer take reservations and it is walk-in only. Even with this change I have only waited 20 minutes max on a Friday night. I wasn't a big fan of sushi, but Kamrai has totally converted me. I personally love the Fantastic Roll because it is served warm unlike most sushi. I've always been a huge fan of Thai food and the curries here are all awesome. Service can be slower, but there aren't that many servers for a very busy spot. Don't let that deter you because the food is SO GOOD that is it worth waiting a little longer for a greeting and the check. Also it is BYOB. Great for date night. read more

BEST SERVICE EVER. We were greeted immediately upon entering, the host asked our names and talked to us for a while while we decided what to have. The portions were HUGE for sushi. Normally $10 will get you 6 or 8 pieces but we were in for a surprise when each roll was over 10 HUGE pieces long. We were also given free appetizers (spring rolls) and dessert (green tea ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top). The place was beautiful and clean. Not one complaint. Kamrai raises the bar for Thai and Sushi in the State College area. Our group of four had 4 different sushi rolls and 4 Thai entrees. I would have to say that no other sushi in town comes close to the variety of sushi choices. The choices of rolls are different than your standard selection all over the US. They have made an effort to create some unique roll combinations. The roll sizes are very large in length and diameter. I believe this has lead to some sushi roll prices being higher than other sushi restaurants. Given the quality of ingredients and roll sizes, I think the sushi pricing is fair. We had two curry dishes (pumpkin and pineapple) and the basil eggplant. The vegetables were fresh and not over cooked. The flavors of the vegetables were excellent. The sauces were not to heavy or salty. We visited on a Tuesday night at 6:30pm and the start of our service was lacking attentiveness. Once we received our menus and waters, we waited over 15 minutes for a waiter to return to our table. We also did not really see any waitstaff to flag down during this period. While we were here to enjoy the company of friends, and in no particular rush, we started to get hungry. After ordering, the rest of the service was excellent. I've been in the State College area for a few years and matched with someone on Bumble BFF, which finally gave me an excuse to try this place! Me & her are both big foodies, so this was really exciting! The environment is light, mellow music, & lighting is good. We were placed on the 'patio' which is this cute portion of the restaurant that is only for parties of 2. The food was really good and it really helped with our conversations. So I go to Penn State and as someone from a big city, State College has some pretty mediocre restaurants. Well I found this place.. The restaurant looks like someones house with ambient decor. You could say it looks nice if you like that kind of thing. The tables are kind of small and tight especially if you get a window seat. We tried the tiger eyes, roast duck curry, sex on the moon roll, and adventure roll. Thats a lot of food for two people. Everything i ordered was above average (to my surprise!) The sushi rolls are jumbo sized and they usually come with 10 pieces! the prices might be slightly higher but i feel its much more worth it portion wise and taste wise compared to lets say Fuji or Sakura or Say Sushi to name a few... The only bad thing I have to point out is that we had to wait 40 minutes for our food to come. OVERALL 4.5/5 definitely will come here again read more
