I could tell when I walked in that Kalm was the spot to be. tables were full and the food smelled AMAZING. there was a vegetarian/vegan section on the menu which made ordering easy. i got the tofu banh mi and the summer rolls. the summer rolls were so good and had so much flavor. i really enjoyed them. the banh mi was okay. it was very dry and needed a sauce. I ended up using my summer roll sauce and I wish I would have had more. the summer rolls and the smells inside were amazing though so i'm not too pressed about the banh mi.

Vegetarian menu. Note that the only have seven items. Number eight is a joke.

You never know where you might find a quality immigrant-run restaurant, and I certainly would not have stopped at this anonymous Eastern Tennessee strip mall had my advance research not uncovered this place. It's small, seating on the order of twenty or so and devoting a significant amount of space to its buzzing open kitchen and a TV running travel shows set in Vietname. Their vegetarian menu (designated as vegan as well) offers seven items; the eighth was a joke that didn't quite land for me. I eschewed the basics (which looked good) in favor of the more unusual banh xeo, which is a rice-based crepe. Here, they cooked some tofu pieces into the crepe and then filled it with bean sprouts and added some lettuce and dipping sauce on the side. It was an interesting finger food experience, though I will say the chili sauce that came with my rolls (always order rolls at Vietnamese places) was better than the sweet sauce it came with. I wished I had room for more.

    They have vegan options too

Lots of people have recommended this spot and we finally got the chance to dine in and try it. We came in sometime between 2-3 PM and it was pretty much dead, with just one other table dining in. We were promptly seated with menus and greeted. We ordered shortly after getting our drinks, and decided on the goi cuon, pho dac biet, and the bun cha gio. Unfortunately, everything we had was mediocre. The spring rolls barely had any meat and didn't have any herbs (wtf), the pho broth was bland, and the vermicelli bowl didn't have any of the staple "fixings/ toppings" that you would normally get in other Vietnamese restaurants, like cilantro, basil, mint, some pickled carrots and daikon, but they sure didn't forget the lettuce, one or two slices of cucumber (???) and peanuts. The egg rolls also tasted really weird, almost like cinnamon spiced egg rolls... They were cut almost paper thin and barely had any filling. Huge disappointment. On a good note, the nuoc cham (fish sauce) for the vermicelli was actually decent, but I still added lots of chili paste since I'm a spicy girl~ I can see why *other people* like it here, but for a Vietnamese person in search of something that reminds them of mom's cooking, KALM doesn't suffice, as they Americanize their food a bit too much. It seems too difficult to go anywhere for authentic, *quality* Vietnamese comfort food in this area that won't skimp on ingredients or charge a ridiculous price. We won't be back.

Finally got around to visiting this place - wanted to try it for a while since I had heard so much about it! And sure enough, truly enjoyed having Vietnamese cuisine for the first time. It's a cozy little place, might not be suitable for large groups. It's pretty neat and clean. Our server was super friendly and was really receptive to all our questions, since it was our first time trying out this cuisine. We liked the food overall, we had ordered vegetarian items on the menu: Vegetarian Pho Chay - really loved this one! It wasn't spicy, but it was very flavorful. It had tofu, noodles, and veggies Bun Chay - it was good too, was expecting it to be more flavorful. Spring Rolls - loved these! They were stuffed with vermicelli noodles and fried tofu in rice paper sheet, served with peanut sauce. They did not have certain items that were listed under Specials (ex: coconut or raspberry boba tea, so ended up ordering mango boba which was okay) IMO, here's how I would rate this place- Food - 4/5 Service - 5/5 Ambience - 4/5 Would love to visit again and try more items on the menu!

My wife and I ordered from Pho Lao Kitchen Der for takeout. We are quite versed in Thai cuisine,…read morehave only become interested in Vietnamese cuisine in the past few years, but are completely ignorant of Lao food. The portion sizes here are huge! Here was our order: -Shrimp Salad (Summer) Rolls: 10/10...the rolls were twice the size of rolls you get at other Thai places for the same price. But with the peanut sauce, they were transcendental. That peanut sauce could be bottled and sold en masse. So so so good. -Papaya Salad: 7.5/10, very refreshing, but with a secret hit of spice on the back of the palate that wakes you up. Crisp, fresh, healthy. -Larb chicken: this was a first for me....to my unrefined palate, it tasted almost like ground chicken cooked with pho spices/herbs. I ended up drizzling some of the leftover peanut sauce on the chicken which was amazing. Again, lots of protein and vegetables, perfect for health-conscious folks. 9/10 -Pad Thai: this is my wife's safe order that she always uses as a litmus test for restaurants, and it did NOT disappoint! She said this was her favorite pad Thai EVER, and with drizzles of the extra peanut sauce and lime juice, this dish was truly elevated. 10/10. -Mango Sticky Rice: 100000000/10, my lord I don't know how I lived my life without this. It's reminiscent of peach cobbler in my opinion, but with mango. The sweetened rice isn't overly sweet, which allows the sharpness/sweetness of the mango to shine. The mango itself was perfectly ripe, whereas most mangos tend to be sickly sweet and mushy from overripening. All in all, this is our new favorite for Thai cuisine in Tri-Cities, and my introduction to Lao food was beautiful and filling. We will absolutely be back in the future, as I'd love to see how Lao pho differs from Vietnamese pho. Plus the mango sticky rice is etched into my mind permanently.

Good thing I took a picture of my receipt when I had written the tip very clearly. The restaurant decided to instead change the tip and put whatever they wanted. This is fraudulent and is being reported to the appropriate institution. Original: Good food, decent service, decent atmosphere. To start off, food is actually pretty good! Vegetable spring rolls are crispy and tasty, however the duck sauce that it is served with is a little weird. It is not sweet like any other restaurant. They also have a decent hot and sour soup, however, the real star is their tom kaa soup (coconut soup). That soup is really flavorful and is great with steamed tofu. I also should suggest asking for the spice rack so that you can add a little spice to the soup. Make sure to get the spicy basil fried rice. This is really flavorful, and we got it hot (on their spice scale). This was a real stand out. We also got the pad Thai noodle dish which was pretty good. I do think the restaurant could've done a little bit more to make the dish flavorful, as the noodles were definitely on the lighter side for taste, and they were also clumped into one big mound. Lastly, we got the yellow curry with steamed tofu. This was pretty nice and mildly spiced. Big chunks of potato, pineapple, and bamboo shoots are the default vegetables in the curry. The restaurant is able to make many dishes either gluten-free or vegan. If you have either of these dietary restrictions, definitely check with the staff as they are able to accommodate. Now, service was OK. We were only checked on one time during our meal, and we had to keep getting the attention of the staff to provide us with extra utensils or bowls/plates. Our waters were left empty for a decent amount of time, and it seemed like staff were indifferent. This wouldn't be the worst, however, the restaurant default forces a 20% tip on groups of six or more. As we fell under that, I expected better service. Please also be aware that the restaurant forces a 3% surcharge for credit cards. This is a little disappointing as most credit card assures charge restaurants less than 3% for a transaction fee, so this restaurant is just passing on more fees to the customer, even more than what some credit card companies add. So just be prepared if you come as a party of six to pay an extra 23% on top of your bill (20% mandatory gratuity and 3% credit card fee).
