Me and my wife recently checked out this Vietnamese restaurant. This place would give five stars but unfortunately they do not answer their phone when we try to call them prior. This place was generally busy so I couldn't be too upset either when I entered. There was no wait time with getting a seat and when you enter the building, you just see yourself and the server will come up to you, present you your menu and take your order. Prices on all these items were very fair for what they were. I ordered a spring roll and a spicy crab roll. Wait times were a bit long but it was well worth the wait. There are chopsticks that are next to you. Overall I did think it was a great experience and it was worth checking out. Plenty of vegan options to for those who are particular. So far, their food has been consistent so we appreciate that. We have not dined in yet so I'm assuming the food will just get better as it's freshly prepared. I could tell when I walked in that Kalm was the spot to be. tables were full and the food smelled AMAZING. there was a vegetarian/vegan section on the menu which made ordering easy. i got the tofu banh mi and the summer rolls. the summer rolls were so good and had so much flavor. i really enjoyed them. the banh mi was okay. it was very dry and needed a sauce. I ended up using my summer roll sauce and I wish I would have had more. the summer rolls and the smells inside were amazing though so i'm not too pressed about the banh mi. read more

You never know where you might find a quality immigrant-run restaurant, and I certainly would not have stopped at this anonymous Eastern Tennessee strip mall had my advance research not uncovered this place. It's small, seating on the order of twenty or so and devoting a significant amount of space to its buzzing open kitchen and a TV running travel shows set in Vietname. Their vegetarian menu (designated as vegan as well) offers seven items; the eighth was a joke that didn't quite land for me. I eschewed the basics (which looked good) in favor of the more unusual banh xeo, which is a rice-based crepe. Here, they cooked some tofu pieces into the crepe and then filled it with bean sprouts and added some lettuce and dipping sauce on the side. It was an interesting finger food experience, though I will say the chili sauce that came with my rolls (always order rolls at Vietnamese places) was better than the sweet sauce it came with. Lots of people have recommended this spot and we finally got the chance to dine in and try it. We came in sometime between 2-3 PM and it was pretty much dead, with just one other table dining in. We were promptly seated with menus and greeted. We ordered shortly after getting our drinks, and decided on the goi cuon, pho dac biet, and the bun cha gio. Unfortunately, everything we had was mediocre. The spring rolls barely had any meat and didn't have any herbs (wtf), the pho broth was bland, and the vermicelli bowl didn't have any of the staple "fixings/ toppings" that you would normally get in other Vietnamese restaurants, like cilantro, basil, mint, some pickled carrots and daikon, but they sure didn't forget the lettuce, one or two slices of cucumber (???) and peanuts. The egg rolls also tasted really weird, almost like cinnamon spiced egg rolls... They were cut almost paper thin and barely had any filling. Huge disappointment. On a good note, the nuoc cham (fish sauce) for the vermicelli was actually decent, but I still added lots of chili paste since I'm a spicy girl~ I can see why *other people* like it here, but for a Vietnamese person in search of something that reminds them of mom's cooking, KALM doesn't suffice, as they Americanize their food a bit too much. It seems too difficult to go anywhere for authentic, *quality* Vietnamese comfort food in this area that won't skimp on ingredients or charge a ridiculous price. We won't be back. read more

Never disappoints! The pho is incredible. I usually order the pho tai. The broth is packed with flavor. The spring rolls are great too, I recommend the pork. And the peanut sauce is the best I've ever had. We always order it for pick up so I can't comment much on the service however they are always friendly on the phone and when we come in to pick up. Finally got around to visiting this place - wanted to try it for a while since I had heard so much about it! And sure enough, truly enjoyed having Vietnamese cuisine for the first time. It's a cozy little place, might not be suitable for large groups. It's pretty neat and clean. Our server was super friendly and was really receptive to all our questions, since it was our first time trying out this cuisine. We liked the food overall, we had ordered vegetarian items on the menu: Vegetarian Pho Chay - really loved this one! It wasn't spicy, but it was very flavorful. It had tofu, noodles, and veggies Bun Chay - it was good too, was expecting it to be more flavorful. Spring Rolls - loved these! They were stuffed with vermicelli noodles and fried tofu in rice paper sheet, served with peanut sauce. They did not have certain items that were listed under Specials (ex: coconut or raspberry boba tea, so ended up ordering mango boba which was okay) IMO, here's how I would rate this place- Food - 4/5 Service - 5/5 Ambience - 4/5 Would love to visit again and try more items on the menu! read more

There is a lot to recommend about KALM. It is cute, the server was kind and the food is made to order. We had the crepes and the fried Japanese noodles. we appreciated the variety of sauces on the table and the kim chi side we ordered tasry and not too fishy. IF I was to complain about anything it would be that our crepe was slightly undercooked and under stuffed. The peach flavored tea was too sweet for my taste. I wanted to like KALM Bistro so badly but I can't say that I would go back again anytime soon. My husband and I visited for lunch, he got the banh mi thit nuong and I got the chicken friend rice. He enjoyed his sandwich but I really didn't care for the chicken friend rice. The chicken tasted like it was a few day old rotisserie chicken, kind of dried out and not really good pieces. The fried rice was okay, definitely not something go out of my way for. The service was fine, you order at the counter and take a seat. I'm from NJ, this place was bit basic. This place isn't for insta, but goodness... the pho was great. Service was quick enough, they forgot our viet coffee but I got it later when we reminded them of it. Portion size for the money was good enough. I've found all of the dishes here to be absolutely delectable, and I've received prompt, courteous service on each and every visit. The seating area is very small, so on rare occasions it does become a bit crowded. It's rare to find a restaurant with more than 100 reviews on Yelp that has a 5-star average rating. It's been awhile since we had the pho, and it's generally hit and miss in finding authentic Vietnamese pho with excellent broth and ingredients. We were in the mood for pho during a visit to Johnson City, and we found KALM Bistro, so we decided to give it a try. As the business owner outlines in the description, not a big and fancy place, but we don't think that's a requirement for quality pho. While there are many things on the menu, I went straight for the pho with brisket and flank. I added just a touch of Siracha, but this is among the best tasting pho we've had anywhere. The broth was hot and amazing with a generous helping of high quality rice noodles and meats. We will be back for sure, and we highly recommend KALM Bistro for a fast and great alternative to standard options around town. I am celebrating that we are so fortunate to have KALM here. Between the amazing food and the attentive service, they will spoil you. It's a small, family-run restaurant. Our server claims that none of them had any restaurant experience before this other than, "we all love food." Across several social media sites, their reviews here are about as impressive as I've ever seen for a new restaurant (open for 3 months). They are aware of their reviews and they're paying attention to feedback. I'll be back to try the Banh Mi. (They get their baguettes from a Vietnamese bakery in Atlanta on Friday afternoons.) On our first trip, we were treated to brief Vietnamese history by our self-described "foodie" server who is obviously proud of the restaurant and their food. Wifey had some special diet requests today and he was excellent is helping her through the menu options. He also observed how I was using the condiments and suggested I add lime, Sriracha, and Hoisin sauce to the pickled onions. Solid recommendation, right there. At this point, we enjoyed everything and I plan to eat my way through the menu eventually. I'm keeping this review about the experience for now, since others describe their opinions about specific dishes. Maybe I'll update this after I've had a chance to try everything and have some "favorites." Their themes seem to be "flavor balance and freshness." Update 9/20/17: Ok, several more trips here for dine-in and take-out. I really can't say enough good about this restaurant. I'm most of the way through the menu and have enjoyed everything so far including the lemongrass chicken, fried Ramen (substituted meat for the vegetarian option), and several of the phos. Banh Mi is always a good option, especially for your "meat and potatoes" friend who wants to stick with something familiar and will think that "the cucumbers and cilantro on the sammich are for fancy California types, but it sure tastes good." I guess if I have any advice it is to come with an open mind and ask questions and help the server give you good recommendations. Update 9/20/17: Okay my advice above still stands, but I'm going to add to it. Check out the specials board! Ask about what they're cooking in addition to what's on the menu. Especially on Sunday. They are always playing with this menu and with the specials and some of the most delicious options sell out early. I'm confident that we'll see some of them on the menu soon. They've updated the Banh Mi and there's an appetizer that has crab meat on little toast points that I can't wait to try. They will steer you away from combinations that might not go well together. I don't think that Pho is usually ordered, nor recommended, as take -out but I assure you that mine was delicious. It probably has something to do with that velvety-smooth and delicious stock. When you start with such a great base the results are bound to be delicious. Finally - Vietnamese in the Tri Cities at last! This place is the real deal. I always get spring rolls, every Vietnamese restaurant I go to. This place, though, the dipping sauce had some extra goodies in it (see pic) that took it to a whole different level. So so good. The pork vermicelli was also excellent. Tasty peanuts with mint and vegetables in noodles made for the perfect bowl. For my veg. friends - not vegetarian friendly yet but they are working on it. I plan on returning soon. Stopped by Athens for a night on a road trip and we decide to try this five star yelp place. The interior was clean and modern, not huge, but has a variety of different seating options. Four of us all ordered different kinds of phos and I really appreciate the fact that they would precook my bean sprouts cause I got sick with raw ones easily. The soup base is pretty good, not the best one that I've ever had but was pretty decent, meat was of good quality but I am not a huge fan of their meatballs. Also tried their rice pudding dessert ($3), the pudding is actually very nice but I feel like there are too much stuff inside, it would be better if they could have simpler ones... Overall, a pretty nice experience, did wait for a while for our food, but the service was really warm so cannot complain too much. read more

Back in my Atlanta college days, I religiously grabbed a bowl of combination pho or bun bo hue each week at Pho 24 or Pho Dai Loi #2 on Buford Hwy. This meant I racked up quite a few bowls over the years and left for Johnson City with an unfortunate, insatiable craving. So thank you, KALM Bistro, for providing a delicious family-run Vietnamese spot here! Their water pipes burst earlier today (darn bomb cyclone!) but that didn't stop the loyal crowds from amassing at 3PM when they opened back up for business. I ordered the shaken beef, short-rib pho, and a banh mi. The banh mi bread was crispy and then soft on the inside while you could tell that the marinated pieces of pork had just come off the griddle juicy and hot. I truly believe that their food outranks their larger city counterparts in Nashville. I love KALM's spirit and also the fact that Trevor James' The Food Ranger plays on the TV in the background.
