Updated review from a few days later: The restaurant fraudulently changes your tip on your receipt. This is major business fraud. Good thing I took a picture of my receipt when I had written the tip very clearly. The restaurant decided to instead change the tip and put whatever they wanted. This is fraudulent and is being reported to the appropriate institution. Original: Good food, decent service, decent atmosphere. To start off, food is actually pretty good! Vegetable spring rolls are crispy and tasty, however the duck sauce that it is served with is a little weird. It is not sweet like any other restaurant. They also have a decent hot and sour soup, however, the real star is their tom kaa soup (coconut soup). That soup is really flavorful and is great with steamed tofu. I also should suggest asking for the spice rack so that you can add a little spice to the soup. Make sure to get the spicy basil fried rice. This is really flavorful, and we got it hot (on their spice scale). This was a real stand out. We also got the pad Thai noodle dish which was pretty good. I do think the restaurant could've done a little bit more to make the dish flavorful, as the noodles were definitely on the lighter side for taste, and they were also clumped into one big mound. Lastly, we got the yellow curry with steamed tofu. This was pretty nice and mildly spiced. Big chunks of potato, pineapple, and bamboo shoots are the default vegetables in the curry. The restaurant is able to make many dishes either gluten-free or vegan. If you have either of these dietary restrictions, definitely check with the staff as they are able to accommodate. Now, service was OK. We were only checked on one time during our meal, and we had to keep getting the attention of the staff to provide us with extra utensils or bowls/plates. Our waters were left empty for a decent amount of time, and it seemed like staff were indifferent. This wouldn't be the worst, however, the restaurant default forces a 20% tip on groups of six or more. As we fell under that, I expected better service. Please also be aware that the restaurant forces a 3% surcharge for credit cards. This is a little disappointing as most credit card assures charge restaurants less than 3% for a transaction fee, so this restaurant is just passing on more fees to the customer, even more than what some credit card companies add. So just be prepared if you come as a party of six to pay an extra 23% on top of your bill (20% mandatory gratuity and 3% credit card fee). read more

This has long been one of our favorite Thai restaurants, so this visit was a real let-down. We don't usually leave negative reviews, but this time was worth mentioning. A dish that clearly advertises various vegetables came out as mostly noodles with barely any vegetables at all, and another dish was lacking in flavor. For the price, the value just wasn't there. We're not looking for any sort or compensation. We are just hoping to give others a heads-up, because we would've wanted the same. Ordered 2x drunken noodles, received two containers jam packed with regular thin rice noodles and not very much else. I just tried one of their specials the Raman bowl and I chose beef plus a fried egg and it was so delicious. It was nice and freshly hot. The beef was tender. The Ramen noodles were not overcooked and just perfect and the broth was so good. It was the perfect meal on a cold winter night... Of the two Lao/Thai restaurant I went to in Johnson City this week, Tomy Thai was the best in quality and flavor. I eat and cook a lot of Thai food and was pleasantly surprised at the taste of the food here after reading some of the reviews. It was much better than I expected. The coconut shrimp were amazing. I expected them to be something prepackaged honestly, but could tell they were not! Kudos to the chef for taking the extra time to prepare from scratch!!! The Tom Kha was very tasty and flavorful and the beef salad was on point. The only thing I would say that as that I ordered the salad and This spice level and it was weak! The soup I ordered at a spice level of 2 and it was good. I will certainly be coming back here in a few weeks when I am back in town. This was our first visit here. Upon entering, we were greeted with a friendly hello and a smile. The restaurant was very clean well decorated and present it a cozy atmosphere. The restrooms were clean and well-maintained. The waitress was top-notch! She provided exceptional customer service and was very attentive throughout the dining experience. When I had questions regarding the menu she was willing to answer all of my questions and make suggestions on different types of meals available. The meal was absolutely amazing. There is nothing that I would have changed regarding my meal, it was everything I expected and more. The food was prepared and came to the table quicker than expected. The waitress checked in with us periodically throughout the meal, made sure everything was exactly as expected, but was not overbearing whatsoever. If you've never been here before or it's been a while since you have been here, I would definitely recommend trying it for the first time or stopping back. We came here for dinner because we wanted to try out a new spot here in JC. The first thing I noticed upon entering was how insanely hot it was inside which is unusual for a restaurant. We were greeted and sat right away and the staff was very nice and friendly. For appetizers, we started with the spicy mussels and two bowls of Tom yum soup with shrimp. For entrees, we ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and the spicy duck. *Tom yum soup - 2/5 so salty, can't taste any lemongrass flavor or spice. *Spicy mussels - 3/5 salty, but the mussels were cooked well. *Drunken noodles - 1/5 don't order this here!!!!!! It literally came out with skinny noodles, looked exactly like pad thai, and tasted like it too. Mentioned the noodles in hopes that they just made it wrong, but got the "corrected" plate with the correct wide noodles, but tasted exactly like pad Thai again. It had peanuts mixed in which I asked to leave out. Extremely disappointed. Had a strong ketchup-like flavor to it as well. *Spicy duck - 3/5 the duck was cooked perfectly. It didn't taste gamy, but the sauce was overly sweet. *Mango sticky rice - 1/5 DO NOT ORDER THIS HERE! It was drenched in coconut cream/ syrup. Idk if that's how they normally serve it here or if the chef was annoyed about having to remake the drunken noodles, but we scraped off all the excess syrup to get to the mango and rice. I was seriously so disappointed in the food because the service was great, but unfortunately we will not be returning to Tomy. The Panang curry was a new one I tried this time. It is a bit milder so if you're not a spicy person like me, I'd recommend this one! Tried the spicy rice on a Sunday. Not too busy at first, but became crowded later. Some have complained about the temperature, but I found it to be comfortable despite the outside temperatures. We came here solely because of all the good reviews of the restaurant but one of the biggest mistakes was that we did not look at the pictures. We ordered Stir fried with sweet Thai basil and drunken noodles. The stir-fried was disappointing. It was bland and there was no sign of the basil :-( The dish was drawn by bell peppers and onions. I know this is a Thai restaurant in East Tennessee so my expectation was already fairly low. As for the drunken noodle, I've never seen a restaurant using the skinny noodle (typically used in Pad Thai) in drunken noodle before however that is not a deal breaker as long as it tastes somewhat like what its supposed to taste. Drunken noodle is not supposed to be sweet or has peanuts in it. The sauce tastes almost like ketchup to me. I don't even know how that is an interpretation of Thai food. read more

My date and I went to this establishment even though they were about an hour from closing. We were met with friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. The waiter was extremely friendly even though he was doing multiple jobs. The food was delivered in a very timely manner and drinks were refilled at the best moments. I can't believe I haven't reviewed them yet. Tomy Thai is probably one of the first restaurants I been to when I moved to this area. My first visit, I had their Tomy Thai Style Pho (with beef), and ordered it extra extra extra spicy. The group I went with advised against ordering it because they didn't care for it, but I loved it. It's totally different from a Vietnamese style pho, but very good in its own way!! Over the years I have tried LOTS of their dishes. Lots. My favorite is still the curry noodles and the pho a close second. They have a nice bar at this location as well. Best part of all is their service. Some of the coolest staff around, and I feel that that is very important and something that they focus on, so my hats off to them in that regards (keep it up!). I've been frequent their other location on Roan more as I am closer that way, but every now and then I still sneak into this location for a nice lunch/dinner. read more

Oh my goodness I can't say enough good things about this place!! I went in during a busy time, but their service was fast, friendly, and efficient. They were very patient and helpful too. They answered any questions I had and were very sweet. I placed a take out order for their Phat Thai and got chicken and a coke. It has to be the best in the area. The noodles were cooked to perfection. The sauce was great, not too spicy. The chicken was delicious and so were the veggies. Food was hot and freshly prepared. The ambiance was pretty amazing too. The whole vibe of the restaurant was relaxing and inviting. The staff there also made sure to check in with me while my order was being prepared. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Not the best Thai food I've ever put in my mouth, but the best in the Johnson City area...everyone knows that. ;0) I always get the fresh roll with shrimp and peanut sauce. So good except they need to learn to wrap tighter. One bite and everything falls out. I hate that. First world problems and all that. All of the curries I've tried are great but Larb is my all time fav thing to get. Minced, Thai spiced chicken in a lettuce bowl with peanuts and cilantro. Geez I'm needing some right now. Tomy Thai is a great option if you're looking for a bite to eat that isn't your traditional southern barbecue or bar and grill type of food. While the prices have increased steadily since opening (as have prices at other restaurants), they are still fair and reasonable based on the amount of food you receive with any order. My personal favorite is the pad see ew with chicken and drunken noodles. Each of these dishes can be at least two meals, though they do tend to be a bit stingy with the amount of protein compared to noodles. Wait times for food can be lengthy at times, whether eating in or getting carry out. Let's not talk about the disaster of a drive-thru situation offered by this facility, featuring very little space for cars to line up that often requires lining up on nearby road or even blocking the entrance/exit during peak business hours. There's a gigantic hill leading up to their carry out window as well which is not ideal when cars are closely lined up bumper to bumper. A redesign of their drive-thru situation is drastically needed in the future, especially as they continue to gain popularity. read more

Terrific food and staff. The homemade Golden Bags appetizer was so delicious we could have eaten them as entree's. I had the Spicy Fried Rice which is a must-have for those that like some fire. My wife had the Thai Pork Lo Mein and loved it and she's a picky eater. The coffee was great and had a hint of pumpkin to it that I really enjoyed ( and I usually don't like posh coffee blends). And for all the true Southerners, they serve a killer sweet tea. Tomy Thai used to be in Kingsport and moved to Johnson City. The location is close to ETSU and the hospitals. Food is excellent, although it's one of those menus where you can adventure into the unknown and really hit a home run or totally swing and miss. We usually get the Chicken Satay appetizer which I could eat as a meal also, it's really good. As is one of the soups. Portions are big. I ordered takeout once and overdid it for just 2 of us...we had a bunch of leftovers! It's a one-room classy dining room with prompt service. You can order most dishes as hot/spicy as you like. I love to order Curries for take out - great for dinner! This review is primarily based on ordering take out as I have only eaten in at Tomy Thai twice. I have found the curries to be very good here and I have ordered them frequently over the last 5 years. The prices and portions for lunch time take out are very good although they recently increased by a $1. I like to order the yellow, red and massaman curries with the brown rice. You have a choice of brown or white rice with the curries. The yellow curry comes with pineapple which you may chose as I do to omit unless I am in the mood for the odd flavor of curry and the sweetness. Likewise in the red curry many times I will ask for no bell pepper as I feel it does not fit that well and it is not my favorite. The massaman is perfect as is. You will get for take out about 8 ounces in a 16 ounce take out container, rice and crispy wontons. The take out window is on the side of the restaurant so it is easy to drive through and not have to get out of your car to pick up your meal. It has always been ready on time for me and packed well. My experience inside is different - I just feel like the interior looks dated and does not have a super comfortable feeling. Maybe it is just me but I just don't enjoy eating there. The service has been okay for eating in but this is just a place that prefer to get take out from. From the dinner menu I have tried the special which is typically a fish dish like fresh mahi mahi which has been quite good. Overall good Thai food - at least the curries at a good price. read more
