I was going to rate this four stars, but I am disappointed after trying to come in for a second time tonight and the hours do not reflect what is going on in the restaurant. Here on Yelp & posted on the door states that on Thursday nights the restaurant closes at 11PM. I tried coming in around 9:50 and the guy told me that they are closing soon. It was very unfortunate because the first time we came here we had a great time so I was craving the food again but it's discouraging to come back here and waste my gas after seeing how things are operating. Mind you the guy was very nice, staff here is very very nice. He even offered to have us sit at the bar for a drink but we also wanted to eat. The first time we came here was on a Friday night, it was lively due to the live band although it was a little too loud for my liking. I did enjoy the live music but it only went on for a short time. The guac & chip were very refreshing. The enchiladas are to die for. Also the tacos are very good. They are wet, but despite being drenched the quality of their tortillas are super strong so they didn't fall apart. The display with the margarita flight was also cool because they lit the bottom on fire for effects. Bathroom was clean too. I genuinely like this place because of the vibrance, nice staff & tasty food. Disappointed on What Should've Been a Special Day I've been to Kalaveras once before for drinks and chips and had a decent experience, so I decided to return for my mom's birthday. Unfortunately, this visit left me highly disappointed -- and sadly, I won't be coming back. Despite there being only two other tables occupied, service was painfully slow and inattentive. It felt like we were an afterthought the entire time. The drinks were overly sweet and noticeably weak. We ordered chips with guacamole and salsa. The guac portion was generous but lacked flavor. The salsa Fresca tasted old and unappetizing -- the only decent one was the standard salsa. We also had to ask for more chips (they don't give enough to begin with), but because of how slow service was, it took a while to get them. The queso fundido was the biggest letdown. It arrived on a hot skillet but was actually cold. The cheese wasn't melted or gooey, and when we asked for it to be reheated, the server seemed surprised we even asked. Even after that, it just didn't taste right -- definitely not the cheese or quality we were expecting. For that reason, we didn't even bother ordering entrees -- and that in itself was disappointing. We had hoped for a fun and memorable night in a spot that looks like it should deliver a cool experience. Kalaveras is so good! I thought I had already reviewed them before but I guess not. They deserve this 5 star review though! The inside wall art is so beautiful and full of culture. Its bright vibrant neon colors make for an exciting enviornment! I love all the happy hour deals they have during the week! My favorite is definitely taco Tueaday with $1.49 tacos and a self serve salsa table with cilantro, onions, radish, limes and so much more! We came here for my wife's birthday and we had to wait about but for the server but it was okay. It was a week day and there weren't a lot of employees so we were understanding. We ordered the quesadilla with Carne asada, the chicharron tacos and carne asada tacos. The quesadilla was perfectly cheesy, melted with a beautiful delicious cheese pull when I bit into it and the chicharron tacos were so good, perfectly cooked, great flavor and so balanced in every bite. The Carne asada is also really good here. It is hard to find a place that can cook Carne asada properly, chard on the outside but still juicy on the inside. The complementary chips and salsa were so good too and we asked for more of that salsa because it was just amazing. We ended the night with a complementary birthday flan from the server and it did not disappoint, it had blue berries in it and was surprisingly a good combination. Not too sweet but just right! Had some family in town and decided to check out this new restaurant. I had been to the old restaurant in this location and want a fan, so I was glad that the food here was pretty enjoyable. They have both an indoor and patio seating. I went on Margarita Monday where you can get several flavors of Margarita for $4. Definitely not a bad deal. I got the mango with chamoy and it was pretty good, not very strong but that's to be expected at $4. I ordered the burrito mojado with carne asada and red sauce. I do not see a lot of places with burritos done this way, but I love that when you can order it smothered in sauce! The burrito was huge and very good. It had rice and beans inside and your choice of protein. The one thing i didn't like was it seemed there was not a lot of meat in the burrito. Hopefully they change that. Our table also ordered the salmon and the Kalifornia burrito. They enjoyed the Kalifornia burrito as they had never had one before, it had both carne asada and shrimp in it with guacamole. They really enjoyed the cooked plantains that were served on the side. One thing i wish the restaurant food was complimentary chips and salsa. So many restaurants are staying to stop doing this and its a shame. I will usually pick a restaurant that provides this over one that doesn't, especially if we have a large group.. Stopped by for dinner on a Friday night, we got seated right away and the staff was attentive and friendly. The music was great, there were several birthdays being celebrated and lots of people dancing around their tables. The music is loud so you have to speak loudly to hear each other but the playlist is great , we had a great time. The margaritas flight was amazing! Our favorite was the guava and Jamaica margaritas. Love coming here for happy hour! They have fantastic drinks, appetizers, and entrees. Honestly you can't go wrong with ordering most of the normal items on their menu. I personally love their guac. My go-to drink has been the Guaverita! Perfect balance of sweet and tart for a marg. Their service is also top tier! Everyone checks on us constantly and our water is always filled. First time going there on Tuesday. I was not I. The mood for tacos but they have them priced $1.99 and you have a variety to choose from. I got the chicken shrimp pasta diabla and the dragon roll both were so delicious I would for sure go back for those 2 dishes! Love it here! I've been twice so far and have loved everything I ordered. The happy hour is fabulous too. Of course, I wish there were more than 3 happy hour Quesa birria tacos, they're BOMB! The ceviche tasted fresh and tangy, just beware that the salsa on the side is a SNEAKY spicy--it will build up and it's HOT! The enchiladas de mole were incredibly rich (also beware... SPICY) and the rice it comes with on the side helps to soak every bit of that mole so you don't waste a drop. Boyfriend ordered the Kali burrito, which I'm usually not a huge fan of fries in my burrito, but did have a few bites and it may be the only "California burrito" I actually enjoy. And I'm a sucker for sweet plantains which came on the side. He's also ordered the happy hour loaded asada fries before (which again, personally not a massive fan of adding fries to Mexican food) and he felt they were on point! I love how vibey this spot is, it truly is an experience. You come to have fun and eat excellent food. The music is loud and the inside is dark and black lit complete with neon signs, so if you're not a fan of dark lit restaurants and a loud atmosphere, this is NOT the place for you. Alternatively, you can eat outside on the patio for brighter lighting (where they are dog friendly). Not impressed with the service, while the servers are friendly, I feel that both times we've gone it's been pretty slow and neither time it was busy. Went back to give Kalaveras another shot. Much better this time. They appeared to be well staffed and we were seated promptly and our sever was very helpful and friendly. Chips and salsa were tasty; I really liked the salsa. I enjoyed the Kali burrito which contained carne asada, shrimp, fries and the usual CA fare. The shrimp enchiladas were also quite good and the white sauce had a smoky spice to it that worked well with the seafood. I got the Chupacabra margarita with mezcal. Let me start by saying that I lovveee Kalaveras in long beach. We were a party of 2 for dinner around 6:30 pm. It was steady with customers but probably needed a bit more light so i could see my food better. We started with what is usually my favorite at Kalaveras, the shrimp ceviche. The esquite corn dish was delicious and combined a creamy deep flavor with fresh tasting corn The nachos were lacking cheese which is always a bummer when your other half is a nacho lover. I'll be honest, I came into this with low expectations because of all the bad reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. We came in with reservations for a party of 9 and we were quickly seated. For our mains, my friend got the potato taquitos and they were really good! I'd actually love to come back and get them myself. I ordered two shrimp tacos and 1 chicken but they ended up bringing me 1 shrimp and 2 chicken. I don't think it was Angel's fault but most likely the kitchen. I didn't say anything and decided he was busy enough so I just ate it. The shrimp taco was really good and the chicken was average. I'd probably come back for the shrimp tacos for sure. My other friends got the pasta al a diabla (said it was good but very spicy, garlic bread was delicious too), another got the quesabirria tacos with consomé (said they were delicious too). Overall everyone was happy with their food so I'd say it was a solid place to eat. Nice and strong margarita was a plus! My hubby had an enchilada plate, which was also $20. It was plenty of food with beans and rice, but $20 for a plate seemed a bit up there these days. The Taco Tuesday tacos were two-bite small, and they served them with meat or fish on them only. I had to go and add the rest of the topping at the self-serve topping bar, which I did not dig so much. I would rather have them serve with some fixed goody toppings. We also ordered the ceviche and 3 tacos. The ceviche was good but we have no idea why the onions were sliced so big. We had to cut them down with a fork. The ceviche was also pricey for what it was. Not sure I would order again just because it wasn't worth the $20 price tag. For the tacos, we got carne, carnitas, and fish. This was the biggest disappointment of the night. The plate was full of juice when it got delivered to our table, which can only mean one thing...the tortilla will be soggy and the meat will fall thru, which is exactly what happened. 2 bites in and both tortilla layers broke so all the meat fell out. I told our server and he apologized and brought over warm tortillas. The fish taco was dry with very little sauce. It felt like they did everything backwards as the fish taco should have been full of sauce and the carne and carnitas shouldn't have been so wet. The one thing I did like was the atmosphere. It's a little dark with black lights to make the walls glow in the dark. First and foremost, Escondido and its neighboring cities need more places that cater towards a younger crowd and are (for lack of a better adjective) "hip." It feels like you have to go to the coast (Carlsbad, Encinitas, etc) or further south near downtown San Diego (little Italy, UTC, Gaslamp, north park etc etc.) So that said, it is great to see a place like Kalaveras open in Escondido! Ambience: The music was at a perfect volume where it was loud, but not too loud. There were several big screen tvs with the music videos of the songs played which we enjoyed. The lights were dim and they had black light art on the walls. So overall, we did enjoy the ambience. Service: This is where they lost a star. We sat there for 10+ minutes before anyone came by, even to say hi or that they would be right with us. Finally the hostess noticed and came to get our drink order. We got our drinks and continued to wait for seemed like another 5-10 minutes. Very odd. We had to ask 2 other employees if they were our server. Finally our server came by and from there, he took our order and gave us good service after that. Food: better than expected! I thought the burrito I got was phenomenal. Great flavors! I could only eat about 2/3 of it. Took the rest home and I had the rest the next day and I was again wowed with how good it was again leftover the next day. All in all, we will be back but really hoping for better service. Wouldn't go back if we are given the same service again as that is a big factor for us when dining out. Small bar and dining restaurant on Grand avenue. Went for a family dinner of 6 people. Service was good except they were really chatty- to the point where it seemed like we had an extra person at the table. Also the table and location we sat at felt small and claustrophobic. It seems that they like to send 4+ people to set up new tables which makes sense for efficiency but gets really overwhelming quick. Now for the food, their saving grace was the nachos which were huge and really yummy. As for the main dish, this is where I have my biggest complaint. I ordered the carne asada which comes around to a whopping $28 for what is essentially just a cooked piece of meat, which you have to cut yourself, and only 2 tortillas to eat it with! I packed those two tortillas to the brim but was still left over with just meat which was really unappetizing to eat alone. This seems like a failed attempt at recreating the street taco especially since to replace the lack of onion, cilantro, and guac, they give you some grilled green onions and chile to try and recreate a homemade version of a cookout. Now I know they offer street tacos on the menu but this dish seems rather misleading as for that price and naming it carne asada I assumed it would be the same thing but a larger, shareable portion. I rate this a 3/10. I also tried their Kali burrito, again another failure- $18 for a mid burrito which holds some weight since you can essentially find any small shop in Escondido that's sells a larger more delicious burrito for half that price. But I guess they subsidize that price by adding shrimp and plantains to the dish (come on now what are we doing- will say my girlfriend loved the plantains though). I rate this a 1/10 Overall, the bill for 6 people was $250- should've just gone to Jilbertos. read more

The restaurant opened in November 2024. We decided to check this place out. We made reservations through Open Table and arrived 30 minutes early. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and led to a table. The place was very hip and had neon Mexican themed murals and hanging Mexican star lights. The chairss were classy green velvet with polished brass accents. There was a second seating area adjacent to the bar and kitchen area. There were several big screen televisions playing sports and music videos. We ordered guacamole which was promptly served in a colorful molcajete with fresh chips, salsa and pico. There were several cocktails to choose from and the mixologist was very creative creating inticing cocktails. We ordered a Mula Oaxaqueña, a Mexican version of a Moscow Mule made with Mezcal. It was very tasty. We also tried a Paloma Negra. Also good, but the Mula beat was much better. We ordered tacos and shared an order of beans and rice. The barbacoa taco was filled with tender and savory meat. The shredded radishes were unexpected and compliment the taco. The fish taco wasn't over battered and wasn't overfilled with cabbage. Our favorite was the chicharrón taco. This pork belly taco had the right amount of meat and crunchy pork skin. It was topped off with pickled red onions. Lastly the beans and rice a Mexican staple.
