Holy cow--do NOT sleep on this place. I've driven past Kaiser's more times than I can count, always thinking, "I really need to try that place." And like most good intentions... it kept getting postponed. First attempt? Planned to go right after getting our car serviced. Next thing we know, we're driving off in a new vehicle --there went lunch. Second attempt? Monday. Closed. Strike two. ‍ Finally, we made it happen and I'm so glad we did. We arrived around 1:00 PM, just after the lunch rush, seated ourselves, and took a look at the menu. Somehow--still not sure how--I completely missed the Reuben I was craving and ordered the Pastrami on Sourdough rye instead. Let me say this right now: what a sandwich! The bread alone deserves applause--perfectly toasted, flavorful, and sturdy. I added extra brown mustard and paired it with their potato salad, which was a fantastic combo. While waiting, I grabbed the menu again (thinking about ice cream, obviously) and there it was... the Reuben. How I missed it the first time is beyond me--but no worries, that just guarantees a return visit. My wife ordered a burger, and I could not stop staring at it when it arrived. It looked that good. I had a bite and--wow--absolute burger heaven . The bun was the real star: soft, flavorful, and held together perfectly until the last bite. Everything worked together beautifully. Now, the staff--top notch. Alberto took our order--quiet, friendly, and efficient. The chef brought our food out personally and later checked back in. When I mentioned missing the Reuben, he smiled and said, "I'll see you tomorrow." That confidence says everything. Another gentleman stopped by, and when I asked if he was the manager, he explained he was a consultant. We had a great conversation, and that's when we learned they sell their bread. Yes--that bread. There was one loaf left near the register and we snagged it immediately. Dessert was non-negotiable. We shared two single scoops: Pecan Pie and Dulce de Leche. We ended up swapping because--surprise--we each liked the other one better. After checking Yelp and Google, I honestly can't believe this place doesn't get even more hype. Maybe timing matters--I was there during a slower window--but all I can say is this: Kaiser's is absolutely worth the visit. A group of coworkers went here to take advantage of the $10 lunch specials. I had the Ruben, which came with a drink and chips. For $10 this was a great deal. They take your order at the register and bring out the food. The rest is self service. The building is great because it is from 1910, I think. It is a great place to see. I ordered the California Chicken & Avocado sandwich for lunch today as a to-go order. I was warmly greeted when I walked in, and my food was ready promptly. The restaurant was clean and seemed well maintained. It was quaint, but not overly crowded. As far as the sandwich - that was one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. Might have been the best sandwich bun I've ever had. It was so soft, and with such good flavor. I will definitely be back. No picture because I ate it too fast. read more

This is such a chill, unique place that it's like stepping into a Time Machine - so you'll be "grateful" after you get an ice cream sundae or root beer float at Kaiser's Grateful Bean Cafe. I got the enhanced root bear float, which might have been called the black & white. Also I got the apple pie ice cream in a cone (and they serve you samples in case you are wondering how something tastes). Service also very prompt and attentive (they also made me a root beer from scratch!) the surrounding interior environment is also very historic, very nostalgic, with the ability to do a free play of a jukebox / record machine in back. We dropped in while visiting the city. The homemade ice cream caught our attention. Oh my! It was fantastic! I had pistachio which was a perfect balance between sweet and nutty. My husband had salted caramel and he enjoyed the balance of those flavors. Most unusual was the texture; it was fluffy and the effect was a delicious cold treat without the heavy feeling of too much rich food. We also noticed that they bake their own breads from sour starter and ancient whole grains. We talked with them about their bread (my husband grinds his own grain and bakes) and they gave us a sample of two. Oh my (again)! They were both wonderful, the rye being our favorite. They will customize a loaf for you. And they ship their bread to you or you can pick it up. Well worth the time to drop by and get truly nutritious and delicious bread. Whole grains are not evil carbs - they are healthy. And this bread will nourish you. Also, the place looks so cool. It's got the same tile it had back in the day below the counter, very pretty vintage tile. It feels like a 1950s soda shop. We came here for a family meal after watching the afternoon matinee of "Oklahoma!" at the Civic Center one Saturday in August. We ordered immediately since we were the only customers in the dining room. It took about 15 minutes for the first two orders to come out, another 5 minutes for two more orders, and 5 more minutes for the last order to come out. We are not sure what took so long to make some chicken nuggets with potato wedges, but our youngest daughter enjoyed them. I ordered the buffalo burger. It feels extra special to eat a bison burger in Oklahoma. It was about a 3/5 burger - good burger to bun ratio, served hot, condiments cold, and with sesame seeds on the bun to give it a nice look. I liked that the onions that came with it were mild flavored white onions and not red onions like other places have (e.g. Earl's BBQ or The Garage). The ketchup and mustard at the table were just what I needed to add the last bits of old fashioned burger flavor. The patty was not seasoned, or else I couldn't taste it. Yours might need some salt and pepper from the table. I ordered coleslaw as a side. It was bright pink. I think it was due to an ingredient in the coleslaw dressing rather than the choice to use red cabbage. Overall, it tasted good. The vegetables were still slightly crunchy - just the way I want coleslaw to be. Our daughters enjoyed some chocolate and strawberry ice cream cones for dessert. They each got a generous portion of ice cream. It looked like two scoops even though we ordered one scoop per child. I enjoyed a tasted of each flavor, but the chocolate was my favorite. read more

After years of intending to, I finally stopped in to split a sundae with my husband. Kudos to them for making their own ice cream, but it was definitely more ice than cream. The flavors we tried were muted and some not accurate. I do love their ooey gooey fudge topping, but they pool it at the bottom of the cup for some odd reason. They didn't say, but strawberries are also available. Besides being a bit absent-minded, at least the servers were friendly. I am torn on this place because I believe these old places are in desperate need of saving. Group think on modernity and which foods are worthy is contributing to places like this disappearing, and that's a travesty. Inside it's like stepping back in time, so old fashioned and cool. Sitting at the soda bar is something you must do at least once in OKC. I just wish ice cream quality was better. Maybe their famous bison burger is their saving grace? Historic Kaiser's has been in OKC for a while, as the memorabilia on the walls may reflect. There are pictures of the old Kaiser and the retro decor is pretty cool and one of the attractive point of this place. The service here is good and very friendly. The ice cream is homemade and they also make delicious real cream soda and floats! We haven't tried the burgers or other food items here since they are known for the dessert and sweets. It's a good place to take kids in for a treat or for little ice cream date. The ice cream may seem a bit pricey but the scoops are huge and you can definitely share two scoops of ice cream with the quantity they give you! Parking might be a little tricky in this area but the whole block is pretty easy and safe to walk around once you have found a parking spot. read more

My wife and I stopped by Kaisers on our Saturday trip to the area. What a cool place for a scoop of ice cream! We didn't try a meal (next time for sure) but the ice cream scoop on top of a brownie was yummy! This little gem has been around for ages and deserves more attention. We always get excited about a visit to Kaiser's for ice cream, but our grandson was super-excited. We had made a trip earlier in the week, and discovered that YELP's listing for business hours was wrong. (It has since been corrected.) He had to wait several days to be able to get some great Kaiser's ice cream, since they now close at 4 each day. We enjoyed our salted caramel scoop, vanilla scoop with gummy bears and sprinkles, butter pecan scoop, and root beer float to the tune of wonderful 70's live music. Kaiser's is a one-of-a-kind, a true community place. I'd never heard of the cafe until I saw a listing for their Pay What You Will Day on the first Monday of each month. I thought wow, what a cool way to fry a new spot. What I didn't know was the reach it has to so many. Most that could never afford a meal or even welcomed. It blew my mind, I've never noticed such a place on OK. That days menu is much smaller than the normal menu but delicious none the less. You have an option of burgers (cheese, bacon or veggie), quesadilla, grilled cheese and ice cream. I got the cheeseburger and ice cream. The place was very busy so I filled my cup and grabbed a spot. With it being so packed and cheap the staff was swamped. However as I watched the staff they never got mad or upset, they were working hard and kept a smile. I even overheard an employee offer a guest a job to wash dishes. Seriously, this place is amazing! When I did get my burger I was presently surprised. Again with it being cheaper and busy I assumed I wouldn't get a good burger. Wrong- it was good, not great but fresh and yummy. The inside is so cute, very American graffiti, even the staff wear cute outfits. All in all I adored this place. It's a true community cafe, welcoming and accepting of all. This very cute location has the feel of an old-school ice cream shop. It was my first time at Kaiser's, so I didn't have any preconceived notions of what to expect. A heads-up/warning to people who've been before: this is NOT the same Kaiser's Diner that closed a while ago! This is the Grateful Bean Cafe, which is mostly vegetarian food (I think Buffalo Burger is the only meat option). Sadly, my experience was not great. I came in and waited behind one woman at the register, and it took probably five minutes just to get her order correct and rung up. Also, I'm pretty sure she paid $15 for four scoops of ice cream! I ordered the black bean burger with the sweet potatoes, which I mistakenly thought were fries. They were large wedges of baked potato with absolutely no salt or seasoning, and they came out cold. The skin was chewy, and the potato was mushy and watery. The burger was ok at best and also seemed to be completely devoid of salt or seasoning. While I was sitting and eating, I couldn't help but notice the kitchen say "order up" multiple times, which the staff either didn't hear or didn't acknowledge. Other customers' food was sitting in the order window for several minutes (must be why my potatoes were cold). To top it all off, when I was finishing my food, a woman who worked there came up and mistakenly tried to get me to pay for someone else's food. All in all they seem to be very disorganized, and the food isn't even close to good enough to make up for that. With so many great places to eat in OKC, I definitely don't have any reason to come back here. read more

They had the topping on the side, so that you can customize them however you please. The ice creams were also amazing. My Great-Great Grandaddy O'Dell (he made the Land Run in 1889) ate here starting around WWI, and then his daughter, my Great-Granny Stewart, was a regular here. HER daughter, my paternal grandmother, patronized Kaiser's her entire life, as has my father. And now me. And now my nieces and nephews, and now THEIR children. OK, here's the scoop. (Pardon the execrable pun. I couldn't help myself.) I loooooove the burger with the egg on it, but can't remember the name of it. The ice cream flavors rotate here, so make sure to find out if they have your favorite flavor the day you go. (The salted caramel's my personal favorite, and WHY THE HECK DON'T THEY HAVE LICORICE ICE CREAM EVERY SINGLE HONKIN' DAY?) :) Seriously -- the licorice ice cream (like the salted caramel) is insanely tasty. Friendly, helpful wait staff. This place can be CRAZY busy at lunch, though -- lots of downtown folks and hospital staff on lunch, plus casual diners who drop in. (Be prepared for a mega-crowd. This place literally has the best ice cream and it's all homemade ice cream which is even better!!!! They mix their root beer themselves which is actually really cool! I got the root beer float and it was spectacular. My sister got the egg nog ice cream scoop and she enjoyed hers. My dad got the chocolate milkshake and they said that that was one of the most popular choices and I don't blame them!! If you don't like a lot of sweets you might share a desert especially the shakes. If you get them in house they will make your shake in the fancy glass but you get like half of a cup leftover as well! Truly amazing after so many years going strong. I ordered a smoked turkey reuben (came with tortilla chips) and a drink which rang up to be $11.99 Now I am more than willing to cough up that much money if you are serving me a $9 sandwich, but that was NO $9 sandwich. It had 2 slices of turkey on it...2. We are talking 2lb value pack Land O' Frost kinda slices. The sauce was good and the bread was toasted, but nice sauce and toasted bread does not equal a $9 sandwich. I would have been better off going across the street to Subway, and I don't even like Subway. It is mostly a vegetarian menu so maybe they were deterring me from eat too much meat...?
