Just a short review for a quick trip. Since I was in the area I decided to do takeout of their mixed BBQ and katsu plate. It never fails to satisfy those indescribable food cravings. The flavors are always consistent, even the mac salad. I also haven't been disappointed with the service as the woman who manages the register and takes orders somehow always finds a way to make the customers feel welcome. The dine in area has sufficient seating and is lit well. I also haven't seen dirty tables, floors, and the sauce and soda counter seems to always be clean, thankfully. Visited Phoenix for work and since it was Mother's Day, we wanted a spot without a long wait and came across Kahu. From the prices to the generous portions and food quality, everything was amazing!! It's been a while since I've had Hawaiian BBQ this good outside of Hawaii. Inside, there is plenty of seating. Orders are placed at the counter, and they call your order number when your food is ready. They also have self serve fountain drinks. Kahu even has a drive thru for added convenience. We started with the Crab Rangoons (4 pieces for $3.59). For entrees, we ordered the Kalua combo ($13.59), which comes with Kalua pork and your choice of chicken. I chose Teriyaki chicken. We also ordered the BBQ & Katsu mix ($14.59). Each plate comes with two scoops of rice, one scoop of Macaroni salad, and vegetables. The Macaroni salad was phenomenal and ended up being our favorite part of the meal. We loved it so much that we ordered five additional scoops ($7.99) to take home. We also ordered an extra side of steamed rice (2 scoops for $1.99) to pair with our leftover meats, along with an order of Fried dumplings (8 pieces for $6.99). Even without the additional takeout sides, the two original plates were more than enough to turn into another full meal later that night. Love this place! We don't live on this side of town, but had a craving for some Hawaiian barbecue. Tried this place and now we wish there was one closer to home. Katsu chicken was perfect. Really loved the sauce. Also tried the teriyaki beef and the fire chicken. We've tried at least five Hawaiian barbecue places here in the valley. I was really excited to try this place. I was in town for work and this place had great ratings so I decided to check it out. I arrived around 7:00pm and the drive-thru was full so I decided to go in. I was able to walk right up to the counter and place my order for Fiery Chicken which came with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. I also ordered vegetable egg rolls as I was craving them. The food arrived quickly and was very fresh. They also provided a generous portion and the side of eggroll came with two. Once I got back to my hotel room I dug in. I went for the Fire Chicken first hoping for some spice and it had absolutely none. The chicken was tender and smokey but kind of bland and the cabbage underneath was watery. The rice was fine but lacked seasoning and the macaroni salad didn't really taste like anything. The eggrolls however were very good and well seasoned. I don't know if this was an off day or if this is the normally offering so I look forward to returning and trying something different. Kahu has to be the best Hawaiian bbq chain around. We enjoyed the Tucson location and when I saw one closer to home, we had to try it. The flavors were pretty darn close (if not same) as one in Tucson. The veggies were slightly overcooked here, but hopefully it's not recurring situation. Hawaiian bbq mix is my favorite which includes chicken, beef and ribs. All three equally tasty. Kailua pork isn't our favorite, but hubby wanted to try it. Service was excellent. Let me start by saying I'm not really a fan of Hawaiian bbq because of a few bad meals from another popular chain. I will say that Kahu surprised me. I brought my sons here after an afternoon out and I was surprised that they loved their food and were both satisfied. This is hard to do with teens who inhale food but are picky as well. This is fast casual food and it arrives nice and hot with plentiful portions for the price point. The meat was not rubbery or chewy. We used the drive thru so I cannot speak to the inside of the place but service at the window was friendly and a little slow but not a problem for me. Kahu's hot chicken plate is my weekly obsession. I've ordered it so many times on Uber Eats that I should honestly be on their Christmas card list if these people have one because . I order their hot chicken plate AT LEAST ONCE EVERY single week through Uber Eats, and no, I'm not embarrassed because it is that YUMMY!!!! The hot chicken is always SO juicy and spicy in just the right way... No, it's not the burn-your-tongue hot, but more like... warm hug with attitude kind of heat. The white rice balances it perfectly, and the mac salad?... I honestly, sometimes can't resist getting myself an extra family sized side dish of it because it's so damn good! The menu covers the standards: plates of white rice + macaroni salad with a few choices of protein (BBQ beef, kalua pork, chicken katsu/teriyaki chicken/BBQ chicken, seafood, et al). There were 5 of us so we got to taste a little bit of everything. I suppose you can compare it to L&L- it will do the job to satisfy your craving. The chicken katsu's chicken was def on the thin side and their katsu sauce wasn't right. I happened to use the restroom and that is probably what threw me off. They had two stalls in the ladies room and one stall had a big puddle of water on the floor. He got the BBQ Beef and Katsu Chicken. I got the Teriyaki Chicken and Katsu Chicken, both came with a scoop of Macaroon Salad and 2 scoops of Rice. There was Lettuce w a piece of broccoli under the meat but was soggy because of the sauce from the meat and I just threw mine away. The salad that came with our meals 4 years ago was so much better and ginger dressing was wonderful, I wish we would have got that salad on the Side instead of soggy Lettuce.
