Well, we headed into Dallas this Saturday morning to get a load of Cattleack "to go", and upon arrival realized it was closed. Ugh. So on our way back to the burbs I told my wife that I had heard about a BBQ joint in Irving that had a bit of a Mediterranean spin, but was supposed to be really good. That is how we ended up in Kafi. What a wonderful set of circumstances. We got the big beef rib, the brisket, the Iran sausage, and the jalapeño popper. We were absolutely blown away at how wonderful the food is. We also had them throw in an empanada and some homemade bread. It is all homemade and absolutely fantastic!!! For two foodies who have been all over the state to try BBQ, this is our favorite. In our opinion, this is THE place to go until Kafi starts to get the press that it deserves, and the ridiculous lines start to form. We LOVE the fact that, on some of the dishes, there is a little bit of a Mediterranean spice thing going on. Oh my gosh...love it! I really loved the service at Kafi--everyone was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the barbecue itself was disappointing. The meat was extremely tender, but it had almost no flavor at all. The dino rib we got was about 65% fat, we wanted sliced brisket (doesn't everyone) but we're given the end of a brisket that was chunked and tough, the burnt ends were fork and knife tough, the guy on the line hyped up the oxtail (I assume to get rid of it) which was also tough and not pleasant, it was really just an unpleasant, disappointing, expensive experience. I think this place is unique because you feel the love and dedication that has gone into it. The owner took something from his culture and blended it with a vital Texan staple and created something beautiful. He walked around to the tables to see how things were and was telling us that the Basbousa (dessert) recipe is his mom's and about where he gets the meat.
