    Gyro Doner Sandwich

Stopped in for take out for lunch the doner was tasty!! Very juicy, good level of saltiness and the flatbread was warm and soft. The tomato's alittle too soft for my personal taste. I also got a side of cauliflower salad, I didn't end up eating it it just was extremely mayo-y too much for my personal taste that I felt like I was eating table spoons of mayo and vinegar. I'd definitely stop in for another doner though, and the cafe was well maintained and staff were friendly and quick. Ambiance was very casual and inviting I loved that they also sold general products in the cafe.

Kabab Cafe occupies an interesting space. It is exactly what you want and need when you're looking for some kebabs and saffron rice but doesn't have any frills. This was the case that led us here today for lunch. We had been waiting for almost two weeks to come here, despite there being many other options, including Persian staples within the area that I have been to several times and love. However, wanting very specifically to simply have kebabs and rice, my focus was on this spot and it did not disappoint. The staff was very nice and willing to deal with my million questions as I usually do, of which, I am very well gets irritating very quick. The lunch special was also a wonderful value, and the selection of "salad" choices was really diverse. I had a hard time settling on something, but as I wanted to go as simple as possible, I eventually settled on delicious shirazi salad to accompany my koobideh, rice, and grilled tomato. Everything was prepared well, and there is no inherent problem here. The staff is great, the location is nice, and the food is good. They even have sumac in shakers on the tables and vinegar pepper sauce, as well as other accoutrement; yogurt, tahini, etc. However, despite everything being prepared well and my experience being quite good, there is something lacking with how the dishes are flavored. They just seem to be lacking that "something". I am by no means an expert, but I do know the menu offered pretty well, and have had everything they offer, at other local places that are lauded for their authenticity and quality, and something here just seemed to be off, especially with the subtle yet savory flavors of the saffron rice. All that being said, I will be back! This may have been a one off and I want to try the lamb. Lunch may be different than dinner, and their pita was charred oh so perfectly. There were plenty of reasons to return. Give them a try and decide for yourself.

Can't believe I am just now trying this restaurant, outstanding chicken kabobs over a salad

I'm always on the lookout for a good Persian spot, so I was excited to finally find one in Pennsylvania! I was a little let down by the chicken--it was a bit on the dry side. I had high hopes that the koobideh and chicken kabob would be super tender and melt in my mouth, but that wasn't quite the case. That said, the food was still tasty overall--I think I just had really high expectations. I also got a side of cauliflower salad, which was surprisingly good. One thing I really appreciated was that the restaurant had a small selection of grocery items--I haven't come across many places that cater to Iranians like that, so it was a nice touch.

Falafel sandwich. Very soft falafel. Good.

Our take out was ready fast, in under 15 minutes. My falafel sandwich was very good. The falafel was very soft. The grape leaves were delicious and so fresh. Prices are very reasonable especially considering the serving size. Lavash bread was also soft and fresh. The only thing that needs improvement is the ability to order online. But it was fast to call in and they got our order right.

Best Thing I Ever Ate: Hummus, Lamb Shoulder…read more This was my second visit to Zahav while visiting Philadelphia. I'm glad I had visited before because I knew the importance of pacing myself. I knew I could only enjoy a little knibble of each of the delicious salads that were initial placed on the table. I think I ate all the twice-cooked eggplant. It was so good! The hummus is honestly the best I've ever had, and the laffa bread is such a yummy accompaniment. I had to stop myself from eating too much! I tried the Phyllo-wrapped Haloumi. It was ok, but I liked my dad's Freekeh Arancini better. The Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder is the reason I had to pace myself. This is also one of my favorite lamb dishes that I've ever had. The greens are a nice accomaniment. I didn't care for the crispy rice, and it was the only thing I didn't like. I got the Pecan Konafe for dessert and it was like an exotic pecan pie. Love this! The honey ice cream was so refreshing after a big meal. I left very happy.

I cannot think of a single way Zahav could have been a better culinary experience. I came to know…read moreabout this restaurant through Eater's "Mise En Place" video series on YouTube and was struck by the care and contemplation put into each dish. The second I knew I was visiting Philly, I set a reminder on my phone to vie for a reservation. We got a 9:30pm reservation, which was late for my usual dining habits but absolutely no question worth the extra few hours to build up and appetite and anticipate going to such a renowned restaurant. We were met with a beautiful dining room and kind, passionate people at Zahav, especially our bartenders, who made our experience a true EVENT, describing each dish to us even as we were making decisions on the tasting menu, and vouching for the fact that we MUST try the halloumi, which ended up being my favorite dish! Wow, the care that is put into the craft of this food is unreal. Zahav is a true celebration of cuisine. We started with the laffa bread being served straight out of the fire with accompaniments which were absolute flavor bombs, especially the eggplant and pickled cabbage. The bread was warm, soft, and so flavorful in itself but made even better by the hummus-tehina, which was perhaps the smoothest I've ever had. The Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder fell right off the bone, and the Amba-braised Greens and Crispy Persian Rice were side dishes that felt like main events in themselves -- the crispiness of the rice perfectly complemented the pomegranate sauce of the lamb. This was the perfect celebration dinner, and Zahav quickly made it to the top of my list of places that live up to their hype and go above and beyond in the kindness realm.

There was no waitstaff or bus staff. The owner was the chef/waiter. We figured - what could be better! The decor looked very homey and inviting. Even though at the time we first stepped into the restaurant we were their sole customers, we felt ignored. We sat ourselves down and were not greeted or offered water until after several minutes. There was no bread offered. Maybe since their sign says "gluten free"? I guess no gluten free bread either? Persian cuisine is known for their delicious home baked bread and customarily given to patrons as appetizers and/or on the side when you order kebabs/stew. There was none. So we ordered the olive appetizer. It was actually frozen and my teeth sank into clumps of ice. I also asked to confirm whether or not their wild salmon was actually wild as written on their menu and the owner said "of course". Sadly it didn't appear or taste wild; the cubed cut meat was thick, fleshy and peachy pink. Definitely not sockeye/wild. Had we known it was farm raised, we would've ordered a different dish. The doogh yogurt drink was very watery and lacked any flavor or substance. Usually when I order this drink in other restaurants I would gulp it down like nothing and ask for seconds. I took a sip of their doogh and drank it sparingly out of obligation, not pleasure. As hopeful as we were to make this a regular stop, unfortunately that was our first and will be our last visit.

But it's true that this place is 4/5 or possibly worse for sitting down, so they kinda deserve it for that. Got takeout from here today and have dined in thrice before--excellent, never had anything slightly bad here. (Those who complain of bland rice must have never had the displeasure of eating over-salted polo--here, it does range from slightly under salted to perfect, but is never too salty.) When I've sat down, the service was good and servers were very polite (and kind about my attempts to speak Persian), but man I cannot get over the weird ambiance--it seems like others can't either; takeout orders predominated by at least 5:1 every time. Walking in you're nervous the place will be dirty with bad food, but it's actually neither, just dim, dated and not well maintained--please at least trash the dead roses so I also prefer the takeout experience. In descending order of absolute best to just good things I've had here: Gheymeh (!!), lamb shank (!!), kashk-e bademjoon (theirs is my favorite!), all kabobs, ghormeh sabzi (not the best I've ever had but pretty good), fesenjoon, salmon (wasn't very Persian, but good) Mast-based appetizers are a bit eh to me but they're the same here as everywhere else. I always get ice cream, it's a really nice treat. I love Persian food and I love introducing people to Persian food, so I wish this was a nicer sit down place to bring people to. I would be up here all the time if it were--there's other middle eastern restaurants northwest of and in Baltimore that I LOVE taking people to because they're both beautiful inside and delicious. Pleasantly pleased with my first Persian experience…read more Just off Joppa Road no the eastern edge of Towson is a massive complex built just for shops. In the sea of massage parlors, tanning salons, and laundromats is a Orchard Market & Cafe, serving up authentic Persian cuisine for 35+ years and counting. Had the fam visiting sis in nearby Pikesville. When we come down she always picks somewhere off the beaten path, something unique. This visit was no exception. Having never tried Persian food, I was excited to try something completely new. In this case, it was new yet also familiar. It's kind of like a mix between Indian and Mediterranean. You've got your assortment of stews and grilled meats infused with saffron, cardamom, and turmeric served of course with a side of basmati rice. The Mediterranean influence can be seen in their homemade hummus and use of fresh fruit and vegetables. There is perhaps no better example than the Mango Pear Salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, mango, pear, Bulgarian feta and pomegranate vinaigrette. If you're feeling up for some true Persian fusion, you can't go wrong with Spicy Kermani Beef, which features succulent filet mignon sauteed with mushrooms and pepperoncinis in a zesty tomato garlic curry sauce. Everything in that brief description is right up my alley, and usurpingly the meal did not disappoint. Service was on point from start to finish, the finish being a tall glass of Persian saffron ice cream. Now this was truly a first for me, as I've never had anything like this in my life. The taste can be described as earthy, slightly floral and very aromatic. Rosewater adds the floral notes, while the saffron gives it the signature golden-yellow color and luxurious scent. Definitely a one-of-a-kind flavor that I highly suggest trying. The dining room is cozy with some neat pieces of art resembling ancient Middle Eastern artifacts adorning the walls. All in all I'm glad we got to try cuisine that doesn't have much representation in this neck of the woods.
