What is the number one attraction in the Lahaina area of Maui? Kaanapali Beach is a two mile long beach, just north of Lahaina and south of Honokowai. We were staying in Kahana some 4 miles north of the beach. We drove down the main highway, and took the Kaanapali parkway exit, which curves parallel to the beach for several miles. No parking on the parkway, with wall to wall block long luxury hotels and condominium complexes blocking out any access, let alone view of the beach. We drive past the Hyatt Regency Maui in the south, past Marriott Maui, the Kaanapali Beach hotel, The Westin, the Sheraton Maui, making a U turn at the Royal Lahaina in the north. If you aren't paying the big bucks to stay at these 4 star hotels (easily $400+ per night), there is very limited beach access parking for the public. Of course if you are staying at a hotel here, you will have to pay a daily parking fee plus a resort fee. For the Sheraton guests, its $20 parking per day and a $25 resort fee. There are 20 free parking spots for the public at the southern end of the Sheraton parking garage structure, with its own entrance on the parkway. We tried 3 times, and every time by 830am, all 18 non handicapped spots were filled. Only the 2 handicapped spots were vacant, and don't think you can get away with not paying for a parking ticket even for a rental car. You can park at the Sheraton parking garage, but it will cost you $6 per half hour, unless you get parking validation for 3 hours with an overpriced meal or afternoon cocktails at the hotel. It's a 11 minute walk from here to the Black Rock, one of the few snorkeling areas on Kaanapali beach. We drove to the Whaler's Village parking structure, with parking $3 per half hour. It's a 17 minute walk to Black Rock from here, but you can get your parking validated for 2 or 3 hours with a $10 minimum purchase at several of the stores in the Village, or dine at any of several restaurants on the beach. We dined at the Hula Grill, and got a 3 hour parking validation, but only with my wallet $45 lighter! There are bathrooms for the public in Whaler's Village shopping mall and bathrooms on the pathway next to the Sheraton hotel. We took a walk along the 3 mile concrete beach pathway, running the length of Kaanapali beach and beyond, separating the luxury hotels, condos, and restaurants from the beach itself. Immaculate landscaped grassy areas next to the pathway, with poolside hotel guests sipping cocktails on the lounge chairs, soaking up the sunshine, under the sun umbrellas.. Crystal clear green water in the shallow areas, blue waters beyond, with the hills of Lanai looming in the distance, 10 miles away across the ocean strait. Cabanas for rent for hotel guests right on the beach. Motorized catamarans and sail boats for the whale watching tourists on the horizon. If you are lucky you will see whales migrating in January and February, by the water blowing out of their spouts. Bring binoculars. In the center of the beach visible for miles is Black Rock, a large volcanic lava rock stretching into the ocean. It acts as a shield from the ocean tides, and makes for a good snorkel spot. Fish and turtles visible on calm days in the morning, with millennials jumping off the rocks later in the day -they don't get up that early when on vacation! Most of the long beach is pretty empty of people in the hot afternoon sun in January. However, the narrow beach around Black Rock is as crowded as Coney Island on the 4th of July, with wall to wall people. Even the paved pathway is teeming with walkers, joggers, runners, skate boarders, and baby strollers. We came here after several stormy days. It's finally a bright and sunny day, but with high afternoon winds. Red flag hangs from a sign. Sign says "Red flag signals heavy tides, strong undertow, dangerous ocean conditions. Swimming extremely perilous for even the most experienced swimmers." Covering themselves like politicians in DC! We came here to snorkel. We come back the next morning, and two people snorkeling 50 yards offshore at the extreme northern end of the beach far above Black Rock. I ask them about the conditions, and they say water too turbulent, raising up sand from the bottom, and making visibility hazy. We would be able to snorkel only 3 of 10 days in Maui, as heavy coastal tides even in the early morning. Winter in Hawaii, it is what it is! Oh well, there is always the sunset dinners -reservations a must- and the torch light sunset diving ceremonies by Black Rock. read more

Clear, clean ocean waters with long stretches of golden shores to lay upon. I didn't find many beaches where there a lengthy shoreline to easily lay out on the beach, but I'm so glad that I stumbled upon Kaanapali Beach because it offered just that. It was rocky like some of the other beaches nearby. It is located next to all of the large resorts, so if you want to get away from tourists, this is not the spot. Nonetheless, I still found it relaxing and beautiful. We parked at Whalers Village and ate afterwards at Monkeypod Kitchen, who validated for 4 hours of free parking. I first heard about Kaanapali Beach as my family drove to my hotel from Kahului Airport. I knew that we were going to stay somewhere in or near Lahaina but at the time I didn't know we would be so close to the beach. Luckily the hotel we were to stay in was one of the hotels located in this resort community. We stayed at our hotel for all of our time in Maui (hence why we didn't experience any parking problems - beach was walking distance from the hotel). I live in San Diego, CA where most people would travel just to enjoy the beach and the weather. I'm most emphatically not a beach person and I find most of SD's beaches to be boring but when my family and I saw the clear blue-green water and perfect sand we knew we just had to make time to hang out at the beach. The weather didn't look like a hurricane would come so close to the island in several days' time. We just knew that we had to get swimsuits so my sister and I could enjoy being in the water ASAP. Having an oceanfront suite also helped. My family was only in Maui for several days so we didn't get a chance to go to Whaler's Village or see cliff diving at Black Rock. I also don't know how to swim so I missed any snorkeling opportunities. However as I bought my swimsuit in a store in Lahaina I promised myself that I would learn how to swim so I could take advantage of the snorkeling opportunities should I ever come back to any of the Hawaiian islands. Since I didn't end up finishing what I wanted to do in Maui a return trip is much needed. At least now I know the next time I come back I'll definitely request an oceanfront view overlooking Kaanapali Beach. tl;dr: One of my most favorite places to absolutely relax on a vacation. read more

been coming here literally for decades...and it is about the best beach anywhere I have been able to go despite some recent erosion. But...if not staying within walking distance I might not recommend. This was the first beach stop we made on the island and we really enjoyed our time here. A long stretch of shoreline lying in front of all the hotels, expect crowds and tourists. We parked at the nearby Whaler's Village and walked to the beach from there. There's a 3-hour free validation parking with a minimum purchase from any of the stores or restaurants. ABC store has a $15 minimum only so you can buy some souvenirs or picnic items then get free parking. Win, win! The sand here was nice, almost like brown sugar, while the water was perfect for the scorching heat that we practically stayed in for hours. Waves were calm then moderate later in the afternoon which was great for boogie boarding and other water activities (rentals available along the strip). Is it safe for kids, you wonder? As long as they are average swimmers, they're fine. Lots of kids swimming when we went. I even had my toddler with me without her floaties. The only thing I didn't like when we were here was the strong wind that was on and off which carried so much sand along with it. You really have to take cover because it stings when it hits your skin. We went home with so much sand inside our bags. Because this beach fronts all the hotels, there are showers to rinse off along the walkway. Most of them don't really care if you're guests or not which was pretty cool. This place is amazing! Excellent spot for snorkeling, as I was able to spot many different types of tropical fish and even got to swim with a sea turtle! Jumping off the black rock is definitely a bucket list item and something you have to do at least once (I did it about 4 times lol). The water is warm/clear and you get awesome views of coral, sea uchins, and other tropical ocean wildlife. If you are staying at one of the hotels in along the row in Lahaina, it's an easy walk. If you are driving, there is ample free parking near/sometimes connected to the hotel parking lots. read more

If you aren't staying in the area and are looking for public access to this beach, I can help. We went over to the Hyatt. There is a small parking lot for public beach access across the road from their grand entrance. Park there and look for a slim pathway next to their building and you should be able to see a sliver of the beach from there. Make your way over there, and if you want a less rocky beach then keep going to the right. There is a row of resorts here with some commotion and you feel a little out of place, but if you ignore that, the beach is really nice. Clear blue water and the waves were quite strong when we were there and it wasn't high tide per the internet. We loved it. read more

Next time I make it here I'd like to try snorkeling since it seemed very popular on this beach. I saw more snorkelers on this beach than all the other beaches I went to on Maui and Oahu during my trip. The beach is long, the sand is nice, it was clean and the water was nice and blue. We didn't experience the strong wind as other reviewers mentioned. The scenery behind the beach was awesome since you could see mountains and tons of palm trees. We easily spent the entire morning and afternoon here sun bathing, in the water, and walking along the beach. There was also an art fair going on by the hotels so we took a peak and I got a cute tank top for a souvenir! We found a large free parking lot on the beach past all the big hotels. The hotels on this beach are kinda spendy but I can see why! read more

This is a good beach on the islands westside. Outside of Whalers Village and a ton of huge hotels. So it is pretty busy. The black rock area at the North end of the beach had some good snorkeling and the young folks like jumping from the cliffs. We saw some dolphins frolicking about out far from the beach. By far one of my most favorite beaches. I actually saw a whale swimming around and cruising in the ocean while I was looking out into the ocean. It was so beautiful and peaceful and not many people around. It has a nice paved pathway alongside the beach, but the beach is so pretty. A nice beach - a bit busy though This is a pretty nice beach surrounded by shops (Whalers Village), restaurants and resorts/condos. And because of that fact it is also pretty busy. The water is nice and blue and very calm, so it's good to do some watersports for beginners (like SUP). A nice little boardwalk leads you along the shore, passing all the resorts and restaurants. At the northern end at Black Rock you can watch people jumping off the cliffs....or try it yourself. Food and Drinking options are plenty. Mostly similar themes and menus catering to visitors/tourists. But even so, the Hula Grill / Barefoot Bar is a good option. Cold beer, good food (try the Crab Wontons) and Live Music daily right at the beach. It's a nice beach. But not one I would visit on a regular basis. I prefer the more quiet ones....and there are plenty of these around. But this beach is a good option if you wanna combine beach fun, shopping and dining. read more

We stayed 4 nights in a hotel right on Kaanapali beach during our visit to the island. The beach seemed to stretch endlessly into the distance with warm golden sand and bright blue waters. To make things even better during our late December visit we watched humpback whales breaching and playing not far off the shore. I had a great time here with my family. We went snorkeling, swimming with turtles, and cliff jumping! I deducted a star because it can be difficult to find parking, it felt a bit crowded, and there was not much coral. I feel the touristy nature and inexperience of the swimmers may have ruined the coral. I could also tell the swimmers inexperience when swimming near the turtles...I dont know what can be done about this though. Overall I had a great time here and the visibility was excellent. I would recommend it. Also there is some parking at the kaanalapi beach hotel. It's only 13 spaces but it's free. read more

Very beautiful beach with a very long shoreline. I started at the part in from of Marriott and I liked it. But, as I walked over to my left towards Sheraton, I started loving the view with the mountains and sea coming together. Must visit for Maui visitors. There is free beach parking by the Marriott and a narrow road that leads you onto the beach. The only reason I give it a 4 and not 5 is because I spent time at the Kapalua Bay before coming here and that is just the best beach in Maui. read more

Stretching from the Sheraton Maui at its northernmost tip to the Hyatt Regency Maui at its southern end, Kaanapali Beach is lined with shops, condominiums, resorts, and restaurants. If you want quiet and seclusion, this is not the beach for you, but if you want to be right in the thick of things then park your towel right here! The beach is three-miles long, and there's a cement pathway along its length that weaves its way from one amazing resort to the next. The part of the beach in front of Whaler's Village is also know as "Dig Me Beach". It's in the center of Kaanapali Beach, and is one of the best people-watching spots on Maui. The beautiful people take in the scenery while catamarans, windsurfers, and parasailers head out from here. The drop-off from Kaanapali's soft, sugary, sand is steep, but the waves hit the shore with scarcely a slap. It's easy to get into the water from the beach to enjoy the prime snorkeling among the lava rock outcroppings. This is a beautiful beach. In a way it's the Waikiki of Maui but without the crazy crowds. Dont get me wrong it does get busy and parking can be a pain, getting free parking is a long shot but possible, but the ocean is so much cleaner! This beach is lined with hotels, big and small, timeshares and condos. Not to mention the restaurants, kiosks and whalers village shopping mall. It has a path that you can walk along for those who cannot walk on sand easily, seems well maintained. However take a long stroll on the sand, but keep your important items on you if you leave your chair or towel on the beach. This place is great for sunsets and snorkeling and jumping off black rock. Bring a chair, towel and hele over and gets some sun and watch it go down. I give 4 stars since not enough free parking for beach goers. read more

Ka'anapali Beach is a gorgeous 2-mile long beach, located just minutes outside Lahaina. As tourists, we weren't sure where to park for free so we took the easy option and parked at the Whalers Village parking garage. Parking is very pricey ($3 per 30 minutes), but if you dine at any of the nearby restaurants or make a purchase at Whalers Village your parking pass is validated for 3 hours (an $18 value). The beach is just a short walk from the parking garage. While it's nice that restaurants and public restrooms were only mere steps away it was also slightly awkward to sunbathe in such a public setting. I wish we would have seeked a more secluded spot on the beach so that we weren't right against the hotels, listening to the landscaping crew mow grass and cut down bushes. We could have laid on the beach for free, but my husband has a bad back so we opted to rent chairs for $10 a piece. Not a terrible price if you plan to spend the entire day at the beach, but we only used the chairs for about an hour. As a Florida girl, the water was way too cold for me to swim in January. I estimate the water was about 65 degrees if not slightly colder. We braved the ocean for a few minutes, but I could only get in about waist deep before running back to my beach chair. The rough waves make this beach not very ideal for small children. Overall Ka'anapali Beach is a pretty beach, but not my favorite beach for swimming or sunbathing. read more

This is quintessential Maui - like every amazing photo you have seen, it literally is that. This beach is a daily walk for me when in Maui (in part because we stay on it, but also because you can clock an easy 5 miles of exercise while getting an amazing view). I'm fairly confident I left my heart on it, and it is the first and only place in the world that I've seen stars in the sand. I'm pretty sure from google that these were dinoflagellates, but I've never seen anything like it in my life and would do just about anything to see it again. read more

Did not enjoy this beach. Very busy and packed. Parking is not good and very expensive and the boats come right to shore where people swim which I don't find safe or ok with kids. Also it's so windy the wind literally feels like sandpaper. I wouldn't recommend it. We left after 20 minutes and went to Napili beach. More family friendly. Smaller. Less crowded and there's free parking. read more

The sand is soft and warm, waves are plentiful for surfers, and the blue water is clear enough that you can see sealife swimming by if you're lucky! The water temperature is pleasant. All my Yelp friends will be happy to know I only have 6 more reviews from Hawaii to post... From my visit two months ago. Yay! Kaanapali Beach was one of my favorite beaches that we visited on Maui, and I definitely agree with the other reviewers that it is one of the prettiest. The beach is narrower, but long and stretches down the coastline for as long as your legs can carry you. There are plenty of hotels and shops along the coastline as well, which adds other sites to see and things to do while visiting the beach. When I went to Kaanapali Beach, I grabbed a coffee from Island Vintage Coffee and went and sat at one of the benches overlooking the beach and the ocean. It was divine! Did I also mention that there is a paved path running up and down the beach which is great to walk on while enjoying the sites? Definitely recommended. I also like coming to this beach in the morning because this is the beach where they teach people how to surf or paddle board and so as you can imagine, it's pretty fun to watch. There is also an outdoor craft fair in the mornings (it was there one Monday in October when we went) and you can rent covered lounge chairs to protect yourself from the hot sun. I will definitely make it a point to come back and spend more time on Kaanapali Beach next time I visit Maui! read more

I love love love this beach. Note: I am specifically talking about the stretch of Ka'anapali Beach that runs right in front of the Royal Lahaina. It's less crowded in the area which is nice for relaxing since it's more quiet. So beautiful, the sand is soft and nice to lounge/lay on to soak in the rays. Even in the water the sand is soft as well which is great... There's nothing like going for a swim at a rocky beach and messing up your toes and cringing with pain after each step. It's certainly not like that here! The water is so clear and blue... Just like you would picture when you think of Hawaii.. The waves can get pretty strong, so only venture out at your own risk, but it's usually just right. I like to buy a lounge floaty from abc ($2.99) and have the hotel blow it up for free.99 ... I just float along and get my tan on. So relaxing. As others have mentioned this is a great place to spot whales especially during the winter months... They come very close to shore I see them near people who SUP board especially those that go out a little further... I'd be pretty nervous if I were them, but it's definitely a sight to see! This place is great to walk early in the morning, lay out during the day, swim, snorkel, SUP board, kayak, afternoon/evening walk, GREAT place to watch the sunset... Can't go wrong if your staying in the area and want to spend time here, from families with babies, toddlers, teens to singles or couples on holiday, this beach is for everyone. read more

Been visiting Ka'anapali Beach for almost 15 years on vacation and it never fails to disappoint. The mornings are mild and there are the few jet lagged people up and about before sunrise walking the beach. It's quiet with only the roar of the ocean. Mid day you sometimes need to retreat to some shade. The Trade Winds can greatly reduce the blistering heat and occasionally give you a sand blast on really windy days. Check the conditions as the ocean can be rough on some days. They offer para-sail, ocean cruises, jet ski, snorkel, scuba, surf boards and stand-up paddle for your entertainment. Whaler's Village has many shops and there are a number of restaurants and a food court to tame your thirst and hunger. Outside of Whaler's Village, hotels have their own restaurants and there are small kiosks with food and drink. On this recent b-day weekend get away to Maui - along with running the 2012 Maui Marathon, I didn't do much of anything but lounge around on Kaanapali Beach. Ah yes, this is the life right here. I just wanted to take it easy and not be driving around too much and spend copious amounts of $$ on gas. Been to Maui too much already, so I have seen pretty much everything a tourist would do. Yelp on the other hand would love me to venture out more and check out the whole in the wall restaurants that make Lahaina, Kihei, and the surrounding areas of the island world famous, but that would have to wait for another trip. I stayed at the Kaanapali Ocean Inn this time, which @ $99/night can't be beat. Kaanapali Beach is the world famous beach that alot of tourist come to. With majestic views of the islands of Molokai and Lanai in the distance, what's not to love. The rumbling of the ocean waves are very much theraputic and just being on Maui is always bad ass in itself. This stretch of heaven is always scenic and I know why people just flock over here. The beach itself is very clean and well maintained by the hotels that are perched on it's doorstep. There is a beach walk path behind the hotels, so there is so much foot traffic there, you can go for a run or just walk to enjoy the beauty that is Maui. Not sure if bikes are allowed, but I assumed they just take up too much room on the path to be ridden on. You can't see the sunrise from here on the beach, but the sunsets are very much amazing and worth the price of airfare. Just like photos you see, it is quinessential Hawaii authentic and it's amazingly beautiful. The Whaler's Village shopping complex is here too, so whenever you get the need to go shopping without having to drive anywhere, that's your best bet. Also, there is a food court at the Whaler's Village too, so you can get your grub on. Like any tourist destination area, they can be pricey, so it is what it is. Kaanapali Beach seems private in the early morning, so that may be your best bet before the crowds of sun bathers roll in. Support local! A+ read more

Went here one week ago (oh how I miss it). This is a beautiful beach. We stayed at the Westin Ocean Villas resort on the north side of black rock which was less crowded than the south part. 1. The vistas in front of you are amazing. Lanai (Larry Ellison's island), Molakai and Oahu are all off into the distance. Beautiful golden sand. Clear blue/green water 2. During whale season, you can see whales breaching all the time. While you can see them with your naked eye easily, it's even better with binoculars. Just amazing how many there were out there. 3. Current is quite strong so be careful if you're not a fair swimmer. It's not strong that you actually have to swim but it's stronger than some of the other beaches in Maui (like Wailea). 4. My only gripe is that coral is VERY close to the shore so it can get rocky in places not too far out. It's great for snorkeling of course (turtles, fish, etc) but not for generally swimming near the beach. 5. The sunset over Lanai which over stunning views but just once, I wanted to be on the other side of Lanai! read more

This place is absolutely gorgeous. The water is warm and the waves are calm enough for people of all ages to get in. If you are looking for more beachfront (sand) property, I would recommend going down in front of the Sheraton (right next to Black Rock). The further south you go from there, there is less and less beach for you to sit on. Some of the resorts have chairs & umbrellas available for a daily rental fee and there are several companies that have water activities available in the area (snorkeling, jet skis, parasailing, surfing). I would also recommend seeing the cliff diving ceremony at sunset at Black Rock while you're there. There are lots of options for places to eat and shop at the resort and Whalers Village. Ehh. If you like seeing other tourists, no waves, and tons of commercialization, this is your beach. The view of Lanai and Molokai are wonderful... But after six years of coming to Maui, I've found far better beaches with less tourists. I have been appalled by the ignorance of the visitors here as well: litter and beer cans all over the beach. Please people, this is paradise! Let's keep it that way! I have gotten some rocken' sunset pictures here, however... I've found that the local's beaches are far less trashed and far more beautiful than Kaanapali. It's good for convenience but imo, an hour drive to big beach in makena far outweighs anything Kaanapali has to offer. I do enjoy taking a nightly walk on the beach down to Black Rock, however.... That, and the fact that it is an amazing paddle board spot, are the only reasons why I am giving this beach three stars. If you're not staying at a resort on this beach, don't go out of your way to come here... Unless you like commercialized Hawaii. read more
