One of the most memorable and highlighted spots I discovered on my trip to Maui. This is most definitely a MUST VISIT beach. This beach is very mobility friendly, all the way from the parking lot to the ocean! Parking is plenty, free, and very close. If you can see a cemetery from the parking lot, have no fear, you're in the right place. I love this beach so much because you can go so far into the ocean and the water will still be at a shallow waist level. You have to go pretty far out to get to a point where you can't stand. The waves also break far out, so ripples at shore are super soft. It is very easy to get in and out of. It's the absolute perfect beach for babies, seniors and everyone in between that likes a very leisurely swim. I couldn't get enough of being in the crystal clear water. The water was cool to touch but on the surface where the sun hit, it was warm, almost like bath water! I miss this feeling so much. There's also lots of room, it was not too busy nor flooded with people. There are both sunny and tree shaded areas. We came here at least a handful of times during my short time in Maui. I highly encourage and recommend time to be spent here. I am absolutely dreaming about my return to this beach! read more

The good: This one's for the parents who want to experience the beach without fear of a wave swooping in and engulfing your child! The beach did indeed have tons of kids. I also took my baby here. The water was shallow and without waves so it was easy for kids to play. The bad: This wasn't the cleanest beach. The sand has a dirty appearance that is kind of mud-like. The fence area is a bit run down and there was debris/trash around. The water looked murky during the time I went. It was quite crowded when I came. Parking can be difficult. The interesting: The beach/sand area is pretty short so it makes it easy for you to walk in, settle down and get to the water without having to carry tons of heavy beach gear far. read more

My friend searched for popular beaches in Maui and Baby Beach popped up. It sounded like a cute name for a beach so we decided to give it a try. While the beach itself was beautiful, I did not love the location one bit. The parking lot leading to the beach was directly in front of an old cemetery that was built on sand dunes. If I had to guess, I would say the tombstones were around 200 years old. They looked rather primitive. One side of the parking lot was the cemetery and the other side was an old mission and church. You have to walk past the cemetery to get to the beach, which was connected to the cemetery. There were no walls or barriers that separated the cemetery from the beach. It felt a bit strange and disrespectful to be prancing around in swimwear within close proximity to the cemetery. I am really curious why this beach is so popular. Maybe it's the abundance of free parking (because it's next to a cemetery)?? I didn't want to stay, but got out-voted.... The sand was very soft and the water very clear, refreshing, and the perfect temperature for swimming. There were trees that provided shade for those who wanted to minimize sun exposure. The beach is protected by an exposed stretch of reef, creating a calm shallow area where people unlikely be knocked down by a big wave. Best beach for snorkeling in calm water. The reef makes a perfect wave break so kids can easily swim and check out the coral. It was super quiet with only a handful of other families on the beach. Love love love this beach. Why? Because Im not a great swimmer, and beginning snorkeler. The ocean at baby beach is so shallow you can just walk right into it and snorkel. Unless you go far out the water is about 3 to 4 feet deep. Even though the water is much shallower than most snorkel areas on the island you won't miss out on seeing the beautiful local fish, coral, and sea turtles! There is a homeless camp near the beach, but they are just friendly people down on their luck, so please be kind. read more

Mala Wharf aka Baby Beach is perfect for snorkeling and a chance to see the sea turtles. We really liked this beach aside from all of the homeless people living in tents and the smell of urine, you can move towards the left of the wharf to avoid that. We really enjoyed this beach and spent hours here to watch the sunset and snorkel. It was so much fun seeing sea turtles, snorkeling and enjoying the day. Pack up the beach chairs, umbrella and snorkel rentals from Snorkel Bob's (my recommendation) for a day filled with low tide and fun with the family. Although it's located right next to a cemetery, this stretch of white sand in close proximity to Lahaina's Front Street (next to Feast of Lele) is one of the best beaches on Maui for families. Nice beach, but the water has a lot of rocks and a ton of coral. I did enjoy the calm water, and as many have said it is ideal for snorkeling close to shore. You will not see a ton of fish, but there are small ones in the water. What I enjoyed most about this beach were the views. From that vantage point, you can see Moloka'i, Lanai, and Kaho'olawe, islands in all directions! The beach abuts private property so it was quiet and felt like I was on a private beach. Speaking of, private, parking is minimal in the area. Street parking can be found but mind the signs and private roads. read more

Took my 10 and 12 year old snorkeling here and the visibility wasn't great due to the high tide coming in. We saw a few turtles and that was great until a "Karen" Turtle lady ran in the water to tell us not to chase the turtles. She wasn't even a local. We are into animals as a family & we learned you need to keep a distance to give them space but they pop up in front of you sometimes when your swimming. I told her my son is not chasing them. There's a difference. He swam w them. We even called for help that morning for a turtle at our resort that was acting strange. Possibly sick or injured. Didn't look well on the beach for two days. The beach itself has a short sand area and it is enough early in the day. It's a dirty color sand that looks like mud and black sand mixing. When high tide comes in, it can make a mess of your stuff so beware. The water is super warm (nice) for activities. There's no shower cleaning stations for your body or feet on the way out so plan to have cleaning water. No shade either. I did it but doubt I'll go back. read more

This was a really pretty beach and easily could have been a five star if parking was better and it wasn't so shallow. It was great for my kids to wade in, which was what we were looking for, but snorkeling is so hard here because of the rock and coral. It's beautiful, but I felt terrible trying to snorkel so I didn't for long. It was really rough the day we went too so I think that could have played a part in it as well. It was windy and just impossible to not have sand blowing in your face. we got a few hours of play and saw a bunch of turtles swimming in the morning. The only other complaint I have is that close to the pier there is a big homeless area. It just looks terrible and I was concerned with what my kids might have found or saw. From that area where you can find additional parking it's a long walk to the other side of the beach where you could avoid that. read more

After combing through reviews on various beaches on the island, I thought to myself, we really need more locals chiming in! It is our island after all & it's nice and refreshing to read things from a locals perspective all the while still keeping those secret beaches, secret ;) In any case, Baby Beach. Wow, what a great family friendly, baby friendly, all-around awesome beach for young and old alike! I grew up on Maui and this was my first time here. I've heard about it numerous times though and I just happened to be in Lahaina Town for another event on Front St. I wasn't exactly beach ready, I didn't even have sun screen or a bathing suit, but the kiddo was being such a trooper, I thought he deserved a nice reward. Yay to spontaneous decisions! I quickly learned that beach access is located in a neighborhood and there's no parking lot set aside for beach goers that's close to the entrance. Street parking is sparse and I had to park along the main road (Front St.) and walk a few blocks. Once there we saw a lot of other families had the same idea. It was packed, but this is a long stretch of beach so we still had our 'space.' There are patches of grass and lots of shady spots available which was nice. We got to the water and it was so glassy and calm thanks to the reef that stretches far out into the water which acts as a barrier. The waves break some 100+ feet out and by the time it gets to shore, they're tiny little waves. Perfect for little ones! I could also see the fish just standing in knee deep water and the water seemed to be really shallow. Great spot to snorkel! My little guy definitely enjoyed every second of it. My only regret was not being prepared for a beach day 'cause boy did I get sunburnt! All in all, I would definitely come back here next time I'm on the West Side. read more

The water level is quite low at this beach, and there's a reef further out within wading distance. Be aware, though, and respect the cemetery just to the right of the parking area. However, I will say, if you're actually concerned about the reefs, this is not really a place to snorkel, unless you're ten and under. The water level is far too low to avoid touching the reef, and it gave me *major* anxiety. For families, this is definitely a great place, not too deep and the reef essentially blocks the major swells, so it's a great place to bring kids and have a picnic. Great view for a sunset as well, but I'd say this is better geared for young families. read more

You'd never know it from the outside, but this is a great beach to snorkel. I saw two sea turtles, a big one and a little one. The big one started trying to mount the little one. Then, they both did a 180, and the little one started trying to mount the big one. I don't know if this was a lady and a lad, two gay/bi lads, or two straight lads trying to establish dominance. Regardless, the mating wasn't very successful. (No, I didn't have my GoPro with me, perverts!) I parked near the Buddhist Temple. It was free but it was TIGHT. read more

If you want to stay local to Kaanapali & Lahaina and have a good chance of seeing some sea turtles, all while having a gorgeous backdrop of Lanai and Molokai, this is the beach of you. We went here for the first time, and had to go back the very next day because we had such a good time. Baby Beach is a calm, friendly, narrow beach about 200 yards. There is plenty of room to find a spot on the beach, even when arriving later in the morning. No waves due to the coral blocking the waves about 100 yards out makes this beach perfect for young kids. Water visibility is 50-100 ft, and nice and clear especially once the morning cloud cover burns off and the sun shines through the water clear to the bottom. Average water depth was about 4 feet. Coral, which can be 2-3ft high, is interspersed within the clean tan/white sand, in various densities. Aside from various fish and the typical brown/grey coral, you can see red octopus, but more importantly, many 4-6ft sea turtles, who like the shallow water to feed on the coral. This one beach had the most, and biggest number of sea turtles we've seen at any beach we visited. We were able to sit and watch up to 4 turtles at one time for up to an hour at a time. The one downside is parking, which is limited to ~10 spots along the narrow road leading to the beach. Outside of that, there is street parking parallel to that road, but its a few minute walk. Either way, worth it and highly recommended. We'd certainly go back here again. read more

It was our first time to Maui with a toddler so we were looking for beaches for him and this was the number one children friendly beach. Once arriving we knew why, the water is calm and shallow my son loved it. The first time we went it was around 11:30 and it was pretty crowded, the second time was around 3:30 and it was about 25% compared to when we went at 11:30! My son loved it he was able to walk in and out of the ocean (with his life vest). Also parking is very easy here as well! read more

With its shallow waters, this is a great place for kids and newer snorkelers. The beach itself was at the end of a street and parking was easy to find. (Many other beaches absolutely full by mid morning and makes parking a nightmare) Just be careful of the dead end because the road there does get sandy and if you're driving a small car, it's easy to get stuck in the sand. The water is shallow and there is still a fair bit of wildlife, so this is a perfect place to get all your gear worked out (assuming you rented gear. Always get the nice gear and pass on the $14 dollar junk you find ok sale at like a CVS or whatever. The nice snorkels make a HUGE difference). Also if you have kids this is a GREAT place since it does have wildlife. We saw plenty of fish, reefs, and even a turtle at this beach. I do have to note that the water can sometimes be ~too~ shallow and sometimes there isn't a lot of space between the surface of the water and the reef. I got jostled by a wave and scraped my knee on a reef because I wasn't careful. read more

Where do you go in Maui with someone with no experience snorkeling in the ocean? Winter time in northwest Maui features sunny days and a few stormy days. Even on the sunny days, the ocean winds were very strong, even in the mornings. Day after day of high surf warnings on Kaanapali beach, Airport beach and Kapalua beach. My sister had only snorkeled once in the ocean, and that was years ago. Maui has a snorkel gear store on every corner, and they all directed us to try Baby Beach. We scouted out the place, walking 11 minutes north of Ruth Chris's Steakhouse in downtown Lahaina, on Front street, until the ocean disappears. We continue walking through a residential area, until we hit Kenui Street on the right, and Kai Pali Place on the left. Sign says beach access. Another sign says no beach parking this side of Front Street. Public parking on other side of Front street on Kenui Street, which we can see in a distance jammed with parked cars. We go through the beach access path between private residential homes, and check out the beach. Long beach stretching northwards, with a few trees for shade on a rather narrow sand beach, right at a small fence separating the homes from the beach. When they say Baby beach they aren't kidding, as I see toddlers standing in a few inches of water 20 feet off the shore. The sandy beach extends a long ways out into the shallow waters, with the hills of Lanai jutting out in the distance just a few miles off shore. Even today with high surf warnings everywhere else, the waters are fairly calm, with gentle breakers rolling in. Looks like you would have to go out quite a ways, perhaps 200 feet, to get away from the sandy bottom, and see some shallow coral. We didn't see any fish close to the shore. Sister is no longer a baby but almost a senior at 59, so this beach is bit too shallow for her to snorkel. No bathrooms, so you might want to reconsider swimming here, as you know those toddlers are going to relieve themselves in the ocean! Long walk back to the car parked on the street. One person recommended parking by the Jodo Mission on Ala Moana a few blocks north. Bring extra towels for the car seats on the trip back, as you will be sitting on your wet swim suits in the car. The last thing your wife wants is a wet seat the next day. People will think she couldn't find a bathroom in time, with the wet bottoms of her off white shorts! read more

If no one had explained the differences to me, I would have assumed the entire island of Oahu was just one giant beach. Instead, it's an island of many beaches, and this little stretch of sand happens to be a popular area for locals and the occasional tourist. To be honest, Baby Beach is way less impressive than the other ones one would find in Hawaii. It's a simple place, a quiet one, and during a good weather day, the perfect place to waddle in the warm waters and do a little bit of a beach walk. Some other things to consider: * Occasionally, homeless folks turn up on this beach. They're mostly to themselves, but this seems to be off putting for many visitors. * Often times there are seals that wash up to the beach. Thankfully the only ones I've seen are alive and are awesome. * There are countless photo shoots happening here throughout the beach. It's usually families who are doing the pose or families to be. * There are homes all along the beach. There is a good chance that if you're leaning against a fence or find yourself in a garden of some sort, you're actually trespassing. * Parking can get tough but keep circling the nearby neighborhood and watch out for the "no parking" signs. read more

maui waves are pretty wild so we were happy to find this little gem south of where we were staying. the beach is, at its deepest, waist high for me and i'm 5'4. i guess they barricade it so that the waves don't hit onto the shore or anywhere close to a 100 feet radius. there's something so nice about being able to just sit in the water and not worry about waves pulling you deep into the ocean. even on a crowded weekend, there's plenty of space for everyone, even turtles :) WARNING: you need water shoes and you need to watch your babies! if you go in about 10-15 feet, there's huge rocks everywhere and it's hard to navigate without water shoes read more

This location was recommended by the guests in our hotel. The water is shallow and great for little kids that are trying to crawl or scared of the beach. Lots of shade here but parking is far. The name says it all...great beach for babies. The waves are really calm or sometimes absent due to the reef protecting it. With that said, good snorkeling can be had here but make sure to do it early in the morning for some great sightings. The sand is a bit coarse and dark for my liking with a few rocks incorporated with it. My girls however, had a blast picking up all the black stones on the beach and throwing it into the shallow water. If you don't have beach umbrellas, you will appreciate the presence of trees for some shade on a scorching hot day. We got in late in the afternoon so it wasn't crowded at all. We hung out until sunset and by then almost everyone has left so we had the beach all to ourselves with a nice view of Lanai just across from us. The beach itself is located behind houses so look for the shoreline access alley within the residential area. Street parking was not a problem when we went. Also, there are no bathroom facilities available here. There's a small faucet to rinse your feet on the way out to the street but it wasn't working the day we were there. Among all the beaches we ventured out to on the island, relatively speaking, I would say Baby Beach is my least favorite. There are just too many nice beaches in Maui for me to waste half a day here. But if you have babies and would like to go snorkeling, this place might be for you. read more

I used to frequent this beach a lot as a child, mainly due to the always calm waters and soft sand. "Baby Beach" stretches from the Mala Wharf south towards Lahaina. The entire beach is super calm due to a protective reef. Parking is a pain because private homes line the beach, so it's all residential street parking. There are no restrooms or facilities of any kind, so you gotta rough it! There are awesome sunsets and a killer view of Lana'i. TIP: The north end of the beach near the houses unfortunately attracts tourist weddings. We were bombarded by no less than 3 on one afternoon. What a sunset ruiner! read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Some friends had been recommending this beach to us since our little one has been old enough to be taken to the beach. I wouldn't say that it's family friendly though. Lots of homeless people that have set up their homes there, and people smoking marijuana. We left because I didn't want my baby inhaling the second-hand smoke. What was supposed to be a fun beach day was a disappointing 15-minute outing. The sand was also BURNING hot there. I've never felt the sand so hot here in maui lol. Will have to check out other baby beaches and hope they're better than this. read more
