    Backyard. DG & landscaping lights.
    Jyro S.

The bidding process Let me just start by saying that I reached out to 4 landscaping companies for bids. Its a time consuming process, but I wanted to get pricing and get a feel for the company. The process itself was painful. 1 never called me back, 1 never showed up, 1 took more than expected to get me the estimate back and said the work would take 3 weeks to complete. K5, was referred to me by an acquaintance, and they actually came in cheaper than the competitor, completion time of 1 week, and had the quote back to me within a few days of walking through. Isaiah was a good note taker. Throughout the process, we made some minor changes based on feedback but they really stuck to our budget, and documented everything in the invoice for transparency. The crew The crew was amazing. They showed up on time and left on time everyday -- no half day or short days. They were courteous and they checked in with me for the little things and made some professional suggestions (It did help that I was working from home during covid). Open to feedback (hopefully I didn't annoy them) and extremely communicative. Quality We already had turf, and they did a good job of protecting the turf. They definitely did some quality work, these guys work hard. They did NOT cut any corners. As part of the process, they told me to check out the lights as night to make sure the setup was good. they missed a tree landscaping light that was already existing, and they had to get some tools to fish out the cable under the turf and connect, and then the next day there was another light they missed, and the had to find the cables to fix the existing lighting with the new lighting. They were very receptive to the feedback, and were like "no problem, we'll get if fixed". Work they did included: restucco our old brick wall landscaping lighting, including fence lighting remove existing landscaping, including 2 palm tree stumps level ground Install weed barrier, river rocks, drought tolerant plants moved plumerias DG (decomposed granite) & drainage propane hose under the DG for our firepit filled in gaps with cement in the existing rock (please note they did warn me that the color wouldn't be an exact match) If your thinking about doing a bid, definitely include these guys. I'll check back in a year, and update this based on how everything is holding up.

Rain already washed the decomposed granite away after the first time it rained.

Although Isaiah was super friendly at first when he came out for the quote, I asked him if he could seal the decomposed granite with a stabilizer spray, but he insisted that if it was compacted right, there would be no need. As you can see by the pictures, that is not true. I then asked him if he could come back and fix it. At least refill and patch in the holes. He emailed back and we set a date and time, but HE NEVER SHOWED UP. Then I emailed him back to see maybe we can reschedule, but he stopped replying to me and that was that. My backyard still looks like this and is getting worse every time it rains.... I'm not one to write angry posts, but this really got me angry. I would NOT RECOMMEND him.

Isaiah and his team were GREAT! From receiving the quote, to completing and finishing the job, they were communicative and efficient! We had a wooden privacy fence installed. On one side, the wooden fence was being placed on top of a retaining wall also being built. Isaiah and his team even worked around our timing of having that retaining wall completed so that post installation for the wood fence was done correctly. I am very pleased with their work! Everything looks great!

The promised "fast spreading ground cover" a year later.

A year ago I hired Isaiah to fix some irrigation issues we were having and do some planting in the backyard. The irrigation work was done well enough, but the planting was terrible. He promised me a fast growing and spreading ground cover, and a year later it looks awful and there is less than 50% coverage. His crew also took out a fully producing, but overgrown lemon tree that I did not agree to and the fruit trees they planted instead have not grown at all in a year's time. He also planted two avocado trees, and one of them is thriving, while the other one is basically dead. They are both on the same irrigation system that he originally installed, and I followed his feeding/fertilizer recommendations. When I asked him to come back out a year later and take a look at both the fruit trees and the ground cover, he missed the first appointment and was a no-show no call. He did come out the next day but basically just shrugged his shoulders and said that what he is seeing is acceptable and how he would have expected it to look. He said he would ask about the avocado tree from his "expert "and also would get back to me with an estimate to replace a sprinkler valve. I have not heard back from him yet, but at this point I would rather hire someone else to fix the work. From the attached pictures, you can see why I am extremely unhappy.

K5 made my dream pergola come to life!

I'm grateful we went with K5 Landscaping for our backyard remodel. Isaiah was communicative and his team knowledgeable. I had another landscape professional come out for a bid, and it was clear pretty quickly that Isaiah understood my vision for the backyard so much better than the other person. He listened, offered his professional advice... and it came out great! Isaiah was also understanding of our budget for the project. He worked with us to accomplish our priorities, without pressure to over-extend what we wanted to invest in the project. I'll def use K5 again for our next landscaping project(s)!

We just finished up our landscaping project with Isaiah and his team. Isaiah was able to achieve what we wanted even with all the changes we made throughout the process! We're super happy with his timeliness, attention to detail and thorough communication with the project. We were able to see our vision come to life and have a space in the front and backyard that we can finally enjoy. Thank you to the team for creating this beautiful space for us!

Irrigation issue that flooded near new paver patio and home

There have been more cons than pros working with K5 Landscaping. Pros: fair bid, friendly to work with. Cons: lack of attention to detail, damage to personal property (i.e. hose, tree, garden box during demolition), never received check as promised for damaged hose, payment check was cashed before completion of project, lack of follow-up regarding some issues, employees arguing with one another while I was working from home, and significant delays. As you can read from other reviews, there is a lack of follow-through once the project is in process. The communication started off great, however, as the project was nearing an end the communication also dissipated. We had several issues during the project such as irrigation issues that could have been avoided (see picture) and the decomposed granite not being compacted well... it is like walking at the beach with your foot sinking into several areas of the decomposed granite because they did not compact it in layers as they mentioned would occur. We also have a tree that had its roots chopped off during the DG installation and is now slowly dying. I have attempted to reach out to K5 several times since they cashed my check without completing the project, and have received several different dates that they would come by to address the issues. It has been almost six weeks without any resolution, as the response has been that they are busy with other projects but I also was told through text that I was "first on [his employee's] schedule when he comes back." The gentleman who completed the paver patio was great to work with and put a lot of time into the project. My experience was far less than ideal and I would not recommend them when there are so many other companies available. Your project will not be a priority, it will just be one amongst many projects that they will try to complete.

New patio using the old pavers!

Isaiah was a great communicator and kept me in the loop at all times via text and phone. We even did my quote via FaceTime. He completed a paver job for me with lots of detailed cuts, and he was the best priced with the best service I have found. He is honest and doesn't cut corners! Highly recommend for your next landscaping adventure.

A JOB WELL DONE We…read morehave a long concrete driveway that curves up a hill to our home. The driveway is 47 years old and was in need of repairs to the driveway and to replace a low curved concrete wall on one side of the driveway, which was badly damaged by time and a large truck. From the Yelp website, I selected 3 five-star contractors for bids to repair the driveway. I'm in my late eighties and handicapped, but in my younger days I worked in construction starting back in 1952 as an apprentice carpenter. I have worked on many projects where I built forms to pour concrete for homes, high rise buildings, and underground tunnels. I have also worked on cementing casing in oil wells as deep as two miles and I have personally poured and finished concrete at my own home. So needless to say, I know a lot about concrete and construction in general. Now that I'm too old and crippled up to work, I'm always apprehensive when I have to hire men to work for me. All too often you get people who lack the skill and experience to do a proper job and often, they don't care how the job turns out. Then they leave behind a mess for the homeowner to clean up. When Oswaldo Minez came to look the job over prior to submitting a bid, I was very impressed with his knowledge and attitude. He told me he was the son of a father and son business and that was my background as well until my father's early death at a young age. The bid from Minez Concrete was the lowest bid and I gave them the contract. A few days later they called to say they had an unscheduled delay in their next job and they could begin work at our home. Oswaldo said they would show up at 7 AM and to my surprise the crew arrived right on time and every day thereafter. Oswaldo's father, Ramon is in charge of the actual work and I could tell right from the start that Ramon is an old school craftsman. He has trained his crew to be competent workers. Too often companies in southern California show up with a boss, who doesn't know what he is doing, and untrained men hired to work by the day. Not the Minez Company, their men are professional workers, who know their craft. On several occasions I have hired people and had to stand there all day making sure the job was done right and sometimes pitching in myself to do the job. After watching the Minez crew for a short time, I knew we were in good hands and I went back into the house. Every time I came out to observe progress there was Ramon supervising his men while working beside them to give us a first-rate job. The repairs all turned out beautifully and several people have commented upon how nice the driveway looks. To be honest, I wasn't expecting the work to go so smoothly and quickly. It was such a surprise and relief to be treated so well with a beautiful result. Oswaldo kept us informed regarding progress and his suggestions and those of Ramon contributed greatly to the final outcome. If you want a first-class experience at a fair price then hire Minez Concrete. They know what they are doing and they do the job right for a fair price. In today's world, that is rare.

They also installed footing drain (French drain) on the back retaining wall, backfilled with the usual gravel, crushed stone and covered the outside of the walls with installed paneled stone veneer. They also did the initial former structure demolition, debris hauling and the requested earth moving and other necessary small retaining walls reassembly. It sounds like an easy simple job but, believe me, it got complicated quite soon. Along the construction way, I was able to interact with the crew and bounce ideas and corrections which were followed to my customer satisfaction, resulting in more than a very acceptable final product. When the inevitable, beyond his control, the one odd crew helper misbehavior occurred on the job, this contractor immediately corrected it, got on top of the problem and smoothly and quickly we had no more of an issue here. He also facilitated for me the customer to bring my own tile / stone wall-caps products and installer guys, which ended doing a beautiful job we're very proud of. Pricing fair, not inexpensive. Job done acceptable, with your own (the customer) continuous supervision and being able to stop working crew's irreparable mistakes before they happened, however, the final product came out well built and functional as we imagined and expected, we are grateful for that. Thanks again to Shafiaq and SK Concrete for accepting working on our small home project and for including us in their busy commercial and industrial schedule.

Like others stated, Justin and his partner Brandon are really nice guys - Justin handles the business side and Brandon was essentially the project manager. There were a few design changes during this process. The most prominent change being the material we had to use to obtain the necessary permit from City of Poway. We downgraded from a premium modern block to a split-face CMU block and ultimately cost us an additional $14K. I realized later I had similar quotes for the CMU block retaining wall for $13K less than I was charged for this aspect of the project. In regards to the lack of attention to detail, I had two issues. (1) When we pivoted to the split face CMU block, Brandon told me to send him the color I wanted. I sent him the specific details to a light gray CMU block that matched the more modern aesthetic of our backyard. What was ultimately ordered and installed was a natural gray (tan). (2) It's expected the split face CMU has inconsistencies, however the crew that installed it used a block that had a giant divot and placed another that had a giant bulge, even though there was a decent amount of material leftover. I chose Pacific Concrete because they were referred by my pool company, but looking back I would have approached this much differently. I wouldn't discourage OR recommend anyone work with them. I just recommend to do your homework.
