The spot itself is simple, with plenty of parking, and fully focused on serving must-try Korean fried chicken. I walked in ready to order one of everything, but the cashier quickly realized I was new and helped narrow it down to chicken, dumplings, and an order of fries. Let me be clear, if you're picturing small buffalo-style wings from a local wing spot, reset your expectations. These were full-size wings. We ordered them plain and soy-glazed, and both were excellent. The dumplings, also soy-glazed, were just as good. From the first bite, the crunch and flavor hit immediately. It wakes up your senses and makes you realize this isn't just chicken. You can taste the care that goes into the prep, and it absolutely shows. Despite being busy, the service was friendly and attentive, which always makes the experience better. When we finished eating, it looked like we barely made a dent, plenty of leftovers that were happily enjoyed by the family later at home. If I could change one thing, it would be having a beer to pair with the meal, but that's a minor detail. Okay, enough about the food, haha, the service is stunning compared to some restaurants I've been to. The owner is polite, humble, genuine, knowledgeable, friendly, positive, and has a radiant energy that leaves you feeling happy. I loved the conversation we exchanged. The owner even retains that energy with every customer that enters, which was truly impressive. The above and beyond nature combined with strict food quality standards and care is amazing. I was amazed when I found this little hole-in-the-wall gem in one of my old haunts, Closter. I decided to give it a try. I got two bowls of the beef combo Pho, a single order of the regular beef Pho, the Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich, and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. These items are the easiest to judge, as most of the Vietnamese restaurants around Bergen County and the surrounding area kind of fail, choosing to cater to the population (skimping on spice, choosing western ingredients over authentic Asian ingredients, etc.). When I picked up my call-in order, the woman at the counter was very nice, though not Vietnamese and neither was the cook (not a problem at all, just an observation). She handed my order and I paid with a nice tip. I made it almost half way home when I got a call from the restaurant, and the same person told me she forgot to hand me the Vietnamese Iced Coffee and apologized. I made a u-turn and drove back to Ma Mi Eatery and picked up my drink. None of this exchange knocks any points against them, in fact, I was happy they called me. When I got home and unpacked everything, it all looked pretty authentic. I started with the combo beef Pho, adding all the toppings, plus the condiments of Hoisin sauce and Sriracha. What was missing was the fresh Thai basil! Then I read the menu and saw that they put the basil IN the soup when they serve it, so when I got home, all the basil was wilted. That's a shame because every single AAA Pho restaurant in Westminster, California serves their Pho with fresh Thai basil so customers can control how much basil they want, and to prevent wilting. That is my only real critique. Otherwise, the Pho was delicious, the broth was flavorful, and the really LOADED the soup with beef. Seriously, a lot of places in Westminster aren't that generous with brisket, but Ma Mi made my day. The Spicy Ma Mi banh mi sandwich was delicious, and loaded with all the appropriate toppings and condiments, though I wish they packed the wet ingredients (pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, jalapeño) so the bread wouldn't get soggy, which it did, slightly. The bread itself was not the best bread I've had, typically, the bread used in most Vietnamese sandwich shops have a flaky crust and airy soft bread inside. This one a bit coarse on the crust with a heavy crunch. The interior was okay though. All in all, it was a great effort. The next time I revisit my hometown, I'll be sure to stop by Ma Mi Eatery for sure.

The menu items are reasonably priced and budget-friendly. I ordered the Korean Street Toast ($7.99) and Kimchi Tuna Kimbap ($7 for 10 pieces). Service was on the slower end... although the employees were friendly, it took around 20+ minutes to get my food. I appreciated that everything was freshly prepared, but I recommend ordering ahead if you're short on time. The K-Street toast included a vegetable omelette (cabbage, carrots, green onions, corn), shredded cabbage/carrots, smoked ham, and cheese. You have the option of having it sweet or unsweet. The sweetened version has a light sugar coating over the toast. I went with that and I HAVE NO REGRETS - the bread was soft and buttery with a crispy exterior. The sandwich had the perfect blend of different flavors and textures - crunchy, creamy, savory, sweet. The portion size was filling for a light meal. The kimbap roll included kimchi, tuna, radish, carrot, spinach, burdock, and seasoned rice wrapped in dried seaweed. The ingredients are most definitely fresh and their flavors blended really well together - you can tell after just one bite! I recommend this roll if you like tuna salad. Can't wait to try more of the menu!
