I've been biking for many years on my cross-commuter bike and have lived in quite a few neighbourhoods in Vancouver. As someone who thoroughly enjoys cycling, bike shops are super important to me, as I never know when I'll need oil, air, or maybe just a quick tune up. JV Bikes has the best service, and Lars in particular is super knowledgeable, attentive, helpful, and very quick to solve issues so that I can get back onto the seawall. Lars is very community, service, and efficiency oriented. He'll ensure that your bike is up and running in no time. Although the bike shop gets busy and it's a relatively small service team, Lars really ensures that every customer that steps through the door is taken care with the utmost attention. I'm very pleased with the service I got on my electric bike here, which included a quick demo on how to lubricate my chain (a basic maintenance task, but not one I'm yet used to doing myself, so the in-person demo increased my confidence). They gave my bike good care and attention and helped me replace a cord I was missing for my charger. I believe that like most shops, they only service e-bikes of the brands they sell, so take note of that. They are very busy at predictably busy times of the year (probably a good sign about the quality of their work) so plan for that. read more

Good bikes that come with helmet and lock. Easy to ride and good location to quickly access the Seawall bike track all around Downtown Vancouver. No basket on bike which some other companies offer. Would have given 4 stars but we mentioned that we were cycling to Stanley Park and asked about the Seawall path. Clearly heading in that direction. The guy serving failed to mention that the Seawall cycleway in Stanley Park is one way in the coal town to Granville island direction - the opposite of our intended journey. So we got to Stanley Park and instead of s leisurely cycle around the flat Seawall we had to go up and down steep trails. For a tourist operator that is poor service read more

Shitty service. Bummed, I tried giving them another chance when I went in to pick up my bike but yah.... the service dudes were just rude. I needed help getting my bike on my bike rack and when I asked the attendant if he knew how to hook the bike, his answer was " I have no idea." Seriously??? Dude, u work at a bike shop. This was my first visit to JV and I was extremely impressed with the service that I received. My main objective was to get my bike repaired and Lars in the Service area did a fantastic job, for a very reasonable fee. He is clearly an expert and diagnosed a fairly-complex problem with the gears on my bike then fixed it quickly. I was super impressed. While I waited for the repair, I checked out the store, which is large and crammed with all kinds of bikes and accessories. The service I received there from Mikayla was next level. She did everything one could hope for and went above and beyond. I made a point of speaking to the owner and manager to let them know how pleased I was with my visit to their store. I went to JV Bike as they are one of the only places around town that deals Bromptons. I found the customer service here to be great; attentive, clearly communicated, and willing to answer any questions. Whenever I go in here they always seem to have what I am looking for and their showroom of chock full of all types of bikes and accessories. Their service department is quick and thorough and I've never had an issue with this shop yet. Highly recommend going here if you are near the Downtown area and want a bike. read more

Depends who serves you if you will have a good experience or not. I had been in the store a few weeks ago and had excellent service from the owner. He spent quite a bit of time with me regarding a bionx bike system. I test rode a number of bikes and this guy knew his stuff!! Fast forward to this weekend, and I called on Thursday to rent 2 ebikes. My friend and I wanted to check them out on my actual commute to work over the Lion's Gate Bridge. I called on Thursday and asked if I could reserve 3 bikes (originally 3 of us were going) and was told they had 2 for rent. No reservations, first come first serve. I asked what time the opened and was told 10am. I got there with my friend at 1015am and they were closed. UGH! The guy on the phone obviously forgot the holiday hours the next day. Ok, that is fine it happens. Then we go back at 11am and was told it would be another hour as one of the bikes needed to be charged. I explained what had happened so far, no empathy, no apology. Then they guy said if you want to wait, i will apply the cost of the rentals to your purchase. As I was thinking about this he then asked why do I want to rent the bikes. Just test drive them. He said riding around Stanley Park and the flat service is not going to show you how the bikes really work. I explained that I wanted to try it over the Lions Gate Bridge to get a feel for my commute. He then "berated" me by saying just take a bike on the false creek bridge it is just like the Lion's Gate Bridge. He told me people make the decision to buy on test drives not rentals and i did not need to to rent them. The experience left me feeling that the potential of a $3000 sale meant nothing to him. He never asked why I wanted an ebike, what use i had for it. He didn't try to understand why i wanted to rent. They made mistake after mistake in serving me and then to make me feel like i was wrong in wanting to rent a bike from them. I just don't get it. There are lots of other places to buy the Bionx system so if you do not care about service and are ok with being told what you need rather why you need it, go ahead and use JV Bikes. Personally I have put my purchase on Hold. If JV were smart and read this the owner would reach out to me and serve me personally. ***** UPDATE ***** The owner did reach out to me personally and offered to serve me himself. He sincerely apologized and explained the employee did not intend to berate or offend me. He has asked for a second chance. If I change my mind about an ebike I will definitely go back and find the owner to serve me. I would just be worried about who is going to serve me when I need service on the bike. They should probably describe their customer service as 100% unsatisfactory. I bought a Dahon foldable bike but I had no time to ride it so I took it back and asked for a refund. The first person I talked to me looked at me like I was an alien and called over a second guy who looked blankly at me before leaving. A third man finally came who didn't introduce himself but he was older and I assumed he was the owner. His first excuse for not accepting a return was that he didn't know if I had registered the bike. He said that he couldn't accept a return because if it was registered then he wouldn't be able to sell it again. I still have no idea what he was talking about. He must have seen the skepticism on my face and he changed tactics. He then told me he could accept a return but because it was an "open box" return, he would have to charge me a 20% restocking fee. He went to great length how the bike was taken out of the box, put together, and serviced just for me. But I bought the bike off the floor. I'm not sure what he was trying to pull but I finally left. This is easily the worst bike shop I've ever been to. Looking at the Yelp reviews is misleading as Yelp can be paid to remove bad reviews. I just wish I had seen the Google reviews before buying this bike at JV. read more

The worst experience I've ever had in a bicycle shop in my life. I have had a wide variety of bicycles in my life and have dealt with some great bike stores in Vancouver. JV bikes is not one of them. A few years back I spend more than $2,000 having my own hybrid bike converted into an electric bike. After the bike sat unused for almost a year, I found I couldn't get it to hold a charge when I tried to charge it up. After taking it back to JV to have them take a look at it, I was told that my battery was dead and needed to be replaced at a cost of $1,300. I asked why a complete conversion that was less than 18 months old, used less than 5 hours needed a new battery. The smug answer that the guy running the store told me was that "you can never let these batteries run dead, or they become unusable". When I asked him why he wouldn't have mentioned something so important as that to me when I first had the bike converted, he said "it's in the manual". That's my example of awesomely poor customer service, both on the front end in not informing me of something so crucial, especially as he knew I had never owned any kind of electric/Bionex bike. And even more crappy customer service as he not only offered to do anything other than sell me a batter at full price, he then insisted on me giving him $60 for the diagnosis to tell me that my battery was dead. The good news is that Vancouver is filled with a wide selection of great bikes stores throughout. Sadly, JV bike in not only not on that list and they live solely on the list or Vancouver retailers that I would go out of my way to warn people away from. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! read more

It was unfortunate that i had such an unpleasant experience with JV Bike. My girlfriend and i wanted to try electric bikes, so we rented a pair from the remarkably unfriendly owner or manager of the store. He actually yelled at us and the entire situation was so absurd it was almost funny. The bikes were super cool and we had a great time with them, but once we returned it was a gong-show. Here's what happened: We arrive and checkout the bikes, selecting two, and i fill out some paperwork and get the helmets. The seat on my girlfirend's bike was too high and one of the tires was low on air, so we waited a bit to sort that out. We realized we needed a basket, so one of the workers there (a nice guy) put a basket on the bike and we were ready to go. The seat, tire and basket situation took 23 minutes to address, which was a little while, but the guy wasn't being slow or anything it just took a while to sort it all out. It was fine, we didn't really mind at all. I'm not being petty by mentioning it as 23 minutes, as you'll discover soon. Off we went to the seawall on the super fun electric machines. We had a blast. On the way back i realized we'd be 5 mins late, so i called the guy to say 'hey, we are going to be 5 mins late, sorry'. We were 8 mins late. He seemed fine and we went over to the cash machine to pay for everything. The bill came and it was 50% more than we were expecting. I asked to see the bill, and it said '1.5 hours'. What? we were gone 1 hour and 8 mins. I mentioned that we were just 8 mins late, and he said no we we used 1.5 hours. The time stamp on the receipt was when we first showed up, not when we left 23 mins later after doing the basket and stuff. I told him this, and he started yelling at us, then swearing. I said i wasn't paying for the time we were waiting for him to put the basket on, and he said that i was. I asked him to refund us that time, since we weren't using the bike, and he started yelling more. It was actually funny, as he was yelling at us and telling us never to come back. I told him that he was acting in a ridiculous way and we would never return, and he just yelled even more. We didn't get the refund, we were overcharged and yelled at. Avoid read more

I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike, I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it where I like! My bike is so old and beat up, that is was well past the time of tuning up. At first I took it to Bicycle Sports Pacific, where they looked at my bike and told me it was too old to be fixed up so there was nothing they could really do (which sounded like a load of horseshit to me, cuz people aren't going to be bringing in new bikes to get a tune-up and the brakes fixed, so what the heck their repair shop does is beyond me!) I know my bike is kinda welfare, but it gets me from A to B and new bikes can be pretty costly. Whatever..... I walked my bike all the way over to JV Bike instead, where they looked at my bike and assessed exactly what needed to be done, gave me an estimate (which was bang on at $57) and told me it would take a couple of days to get to and if that was ok. Heck yes! I need to get this bike ready for summer, cuz when summer hits it only lasts for 3 weeks, so you have to be ready! The staff were super knowledgable and friendly and remembered me when I came back to get my bike and it only took a day for them to fix up in the end. I took it out for a ride around the seawall after getting it back and it was perfect! No more screeching breaks and it seemed to glide when I peddled instead of being resistant cuz one of the brake pads was rubbing the tire. If I were going to buy a new bike when this beast finally gets too old, this is the place I would go to do it. Thanks for servicing my bike! read more

Really good selection. For the most part, the staff are decent. One experience, however, has put me off giving these guys any business whatsoever. NEVER buying anything here again, Bought something relatively small - a light for my bike. After a few weeks, it was broken, most likely a manufacturing defect. Take it back to have it replaced. The item was covered by the manufacturer's warranty so really it's not like JVBike would be out the 50 bucks or whatever that thing cost. When I go talk to the staff, one of the guys starts giving me crap about how he's sold 1000s of these and that this has never happened and that I must have been abusing the item - which I didn't. Eventually one of the other staff members replaced the item for me. No big deal - except that they've lost a customer forever. [Update] Turns out the guy giving me crap was actually a distributor and not a staff member. Having said that, the easy out for JVBikes would have been to just say that he wasn't a staff member and didn't represent the way they treat their customers. Bought a bike there just recently. The one sales guy I spoke to seemed to know his stuff. Seems to be poor communication between the sales area and the service section. Seemed to take 45 minutes to get a kickstand installed on another bike. Staff seemed to have a dim understanding of how to whip up a receipt for a purchase. Also, there seemed to be an interdepartmental spat on how to process a six dollar kickstand installation. WTF??? read more

I rented a bike here with a friend because of its location being close to where we were, Science World. It was confusing to find this place but only because of the construction in the area. The staff were pleasant and very helpful. The prices were very reasonable, starting at $10 for the first hour and $5/hour thereafter, and it gets cheaper obviously the longer you keep the bike. read more

Terrible service and rude people ! I rented bikes here with my girlfriend and totally over charge for bikes !! Than it top of that the guy who works here white hair blue eye was extremely demanding !! Don't go here rent mobi bikes there's stations all over Vancouver and they charge Only $29 for 90 days of 60 min bike rides and you don't have to deal with crazy people ! Plus the owner who works there sent me message begging me to take my review down what a piece of scum as you can't pay me to take review done so deal with it that your store sucks and that your MAD that my review is real! I recently bought a BionX electric bike conversion kit from JV Bike, and was really, really impressed with them. I mostly dealt with one guy over the course of a week, who was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, thorough, and good at suggesting various options without ever being pushy or "salesy". The other people at the store seemed decent as well. I checked out a few other electric bike places and it only helped confirm my decision to go with JV Bike and the BionX kit - the others I tried just didn't seem to know as much about their own products, and weren't as attentive and helpful. Hopefully if I need service they'll be good as well. The installation did cost me a little more than anticipated due to some quirks of my bike, which the mechanic didn't notice right away when looking at the bike. So that was disappointing, but the sales guy did apologize profusely (it certainly wasn't his fault, anyway). Wasn't the end of the world. Also, they have an awe-inspiring selection of baskets, panniers, helmets... everything. Lots and lots to choose from. They made me happy! read more

After a very bad ski accident, knee surgery, blah blah blah... Long story short: It became impossible to ride on small "hills" with my regular bike. My knee was killing me! I went to JV Bike where I had a new BionX electric system installed on my old (and dear) bicycle. WOW!!! They are really good there! Although my bike is old and was not exactly made to receive such an upgrade, they managed to have it done and the service is absolutely perfect! I am so happy with my bike now! By the way, I highly recommend you have some kind of assistance (electric system) in case you don't want / can't have pressure on your knees. Biking is a breeze now, I even don't remember I have a bad knee! :) The technician who performed the service is called Rich and I highly recommend you ask for him. When I went to pick up my bike he gave me detailed instructions, and was very kind to answer my (many) questions.. I left the store with a lot of confidence and feeling really happy. Great stock of folding bike tires and parts. Fun well stocked store of fixed frame and folding bicycles. My visit centred around buying some high end folding pedals. Although we able to agree on price for the pedal I wanted a 1 year warranty for the product and Manager would only offer me a 3 months. This was not going to work for me. So I a decided on a more basic pedals which JV installed on the sport for a fair price. I left the store with my short term needs met. read more

Staff here is excellent as were the condition of the bikes. They had 24hr rental period which was nice as I like to ride early am and at night when traveling. Helmet and lock included, and bike had a water bottle cage. This is clearly a neighborhood bike shop & repair place so it was nice to see locals coming & going to collect their bikes. It's a short walk from the Marriott Parq where I was staying. Being a first timer to Vancouver I did the Hop in Hop Off bus the eve before to scout out where I wanted and didn't want to ride. Came here on the weekend for some bike rentals. We had our hearts set on a tandem bike, got set up, took a few pedals and decided that tandem biking was not for us! Fortunately, they were accommodating enough to us to return the tandem and get our own individual bikes. There was only one guy helping with the bike rentals so the service was a bit slow but understandable. I live in the building above JV bikes and regardless of how convenient it is for me to take my bike down for servicing, I have vowed NEVER TO COME HERE AGAIN! I came here once for an easy tune up and I won't begin to describe the general rudeness and terrible customer service I have received here. The owner is sleezy and would say anything to talk his way out of his many mistakes and oversights. The mechanics range from terribly incompetent to routinely rude and unhelpful. I don't usually write bad reviews but just a heads up for people wanting to buy a bike from JV Bikes. I bought my Norco Search at this store only because they told me about their free tune-up life policy. However, after 3 months they canceled my free tune up policy which they had promised when I bought the bike. Their reason behind cancelling this life time free tune-ups were because i used my bike for commercial use. However, before purchasing my bike i spoke to them and told them exactly what i would be using my bike for which would consist of taking it to work, training and a method of transport. (turns out I only used it for commercial use for a few months-and when they canceled my policy I was just using it as a method of transport). Furthermore their costumer service is really bad and they tried to up-sell un necessary parts where that they deemed as broken (when they weren't) just to make money with the life time free tune-ups. Therefore one word to summarize this whole thing-SCAMMERS. read more

JV had an impressive selection of standard products, but were incapable of helping problem solve some non-standard, but reasonably straightforward issues for mounting a pannier rack on a somewhat unconventional bike. They feigned liability, had no little pieces of hardware, and said I would be unsatisfied if they tried to help me: "If we gave you a quote, it would be too high. If charged by the hour, it would it would be too high. You'd be unhappy." I wasn't necessarily looking for them to do the job. I just wanted the parts. I went to them because they had a great online selection, and in a phone call they said they could fix me up within a day. This was a ruse. They really don't know much about bikes. The only thing they were right about was that I would be unsatisfied. Not because they helped me, but because they couldn't, wouldn't, didn't. I crossed the bridge to the Bike Doctor on Broadway, and they headed into the service shop and then the basement to pull out a variety of little parts to help me magyver a solution. That said, they would've operationalized the entire set up, too. I got what I needed in under an hour. read more

JV bikes impressed me with their service, but I wasn't totally satisfied with the entire experience. I went in to purchase some accessories for a new bike. Mainly, I was looking for a new helmet. Their selection of helmets was pretty dismal, but I was told that this was because it was the end of the year and they had been wiped out. I complained a little bit, but needed a helmet so settled on one. As a pleasant surprise, the sales associate who had been helping me added a generous discount at the till! At that point, I was very happy. However, when I got back to my house I noticed that two of the lights I had also purchased were defective. I will attempt to return these lights today. So, overall, good shop with some questionable products. But for folding bikes or brooks saddles you can't beat it! And the location is great. read more

I recently had occasion to contact this shop about some clarification on a warranty matter by one of their suppliers. The phone was answered by a pleasantly sounding young female voice trying to clarify the matter with me. Just as we were about to terminate the conversation a heavily accented male voice came on the phone purporting to be the owner, and rattled off a spiel about not being interested in what I had to say and promptly hung up. As he never stopped talking I had no chance to explain that the matter was quite amicably settled with his employee. There is a few employees here that are nice, but the owner is rude and could not care less. These guys are moody, rude and apparently not very good at what they do. Phone and talk to Ryan about various folding bike models. Looked on their website and decided on purchasing a Dahon Mu P24. Phone back to Ryan to find out what the procedure was. Told Ryan I would use my companies courier $25.00 to pick up the bike as I live in Victoria. Said no problem. Did a PayPal payment for the bike. Ryan an employee phoned to say that according to PayPal terms they would have to ship the bike because I could claim that the bike was not shipped and they could get the money taken back JV Bike bank account. I totally understand there policy because there are people scamming out there. So JV Bike refunded my money. I was instructed that I could use an email wire transfer which I wanted to do but no one could tell me what email account to send the money to. When you send an email wire transfer the money's gone there is no charge backs or refunds to the person sending the money. JV Bike also insisted that they use their courier at a cost of $75 to ship the bike. So much for trying to support local business when I'm traveling I'll purchase the same model out of town. read more

Sadly, I gotta agree with the NEGATIVE reviewers online. The owner, "Janko," a fellow in his 50s is a very crass fellow, controlling of his staff by raising his voice, yells at customers and walks away from problems. It amazes me how this place could stay in business... We rented bikes and overcharged for time actually used. When politely asking about the time used to calculate, Janko refused to show me how or why. This was one of over a dozen times I've rented, or had friends rent bikes at this location while in school and this recent experience is my last. My advice for Vancouver residents or visitors is to head south/west over to Marinaside/ Yaletown Seawall and rent or buy bikes there. read more

I am very disappointed with the management at JV Bikes. I bought a BionX electric bike unit from this dealer. Although BionX works very well, there were some issues over the first 9 months I owned it - some were a result of poor installation - but not necessarily the fault of JV Bikes, more just the result of the BionX system being retrofitted to any bike and the design of the Bionx means getting some wear and tear in unusual circumstances. Some issues were warranty issues. However, the technical staff there are excellent, and were good at showing me the problem and giving me ideas as to what caused the issue and letting me know how I could prevent further problems (if they were preventable). However, the final straw was when my BionX unit went faulty on me again and I took it into be repaired. I received a phone call several hours later from the manager accusing me of breaking the bike, the fault was not a warranty issue and therefore he was going to charge me quite a bit of money to fix the issue. It got quite heated because I kept asking how could I have caused the issue - it happened while I was cycling and I don't tinker with the bike because its under warranty. He took it the wrong way and thought I was accusing HIM of causing the issue. Anyway, when I went in the following day to talk to the manager, he wasn't there. The technician showed me the problem and told me it was probably the result of an installation issue - which was once again, just one of those things JV Bikes couldn't have anticipated. Its just something that happens when you retrofit a unit to any bike on the planet. I went back a second time to talk to the manager and again he wasn't there. I was also told the repair was free and I was to never return to the business. I think this is a very poor way to do business. JV bikes has/had good technicians but a lousy manager. I was prepared to compromise on the price of fixing the bike to keep access to his technicians, but the manager refuses to meet with me or listen to me. If you think you are going to spend $1500 or more on getting an battery assist attached to your bike, I recommend you go elsewhere - because if you run into issues and the manager is having a bad day, you may find yourself alone dealing with the issues. read more
