It's the kind of place that instantly feels cozy--friendly staff, oldies music floating in the background (at the perfect volume, mind you), and an easygoing vibe that makes you want to linger a bit longer over your coffee. We rolled in for a late breakfast, so it wasn't crowded, which made it all the more relaxing. I went with the ham and cheese croissant--flaky, buttery, and honestly bigger than my appetite could handle. My husband went all in with the biscuits and gravy, eggs, and hash browns. He got the jalapeño biscuits with sausage gravy, and wow. Fluffy, flavorful, and generously portioned--the kind of meal that makes you rethink whether you should skip lunch (spoiler: you won't need it). The Pig & Whistle may be small, but it delivers big on charm and flavor. Don't sleep on this little gem--you'll leave with a full belly and a smile.

Best donuts in town, such as that may be. I only rarely eat these things as they aren't tasty…read moreenough to offset the damage done to my diet. On the other hand that's also the reason why I usually can't justify downing a second glass of most California wines. But these donuts are quite good: fresh with an open and airy structure and the apple fritter has actual bits of apple, or so it seemed. But there's something odd going on here, not specifically in this shop in Cooper but... Have you ever noticed how many donut shops all around are called "Good Donuts" or is it, as often the case lately: AM I THE ONLY ONE???? Well that's how it is anyway! See, all around the country it's Good Donuts here and Good Donuts there and that's how it is. Open your f'n eyes willya! (Sorry but I can get pretty worked up about things. Yet everybody is always telling me it's only in my head?) So this is just another example and proves my case, but why is it? The other thing I've noticed is that most if not all Good Donuts shops, including this one (and in fact a predominant number of donut shops of all appellations) are owned by Asians. This one is typical both in that regard, and in being very well maintained with excellent product quality, especially the ones with custard filling. So what up wid dat? I think it's related to the tradition of Chinese coffee/bakery shops, which you may recall I've reviewed from every Chinatown in the country. I lived in such neighborhoods in nyc, sf, LA and Philly, in fact they're my go-to for many things. So there you have yet another mystery and one not even my beautiful China girl can explain. What she doesn't do is suggest it's only in my head. Smart, too.

The place is called - "Milo's Off the Square" and it just keeps me coming back for more. So, if you liked smoked meats like brisket and ribs, you have to hit this joint up. Stuffed brisket burgers, smoked meats of almost every kind, and yet, they seem to have a regular customer base who just love their daily specials. Some days are as simple as meatloaf or pot roast, both with all the fixin's of the day. For me, all you have to show me are the words "CHICKEN FRIED"and I will just go insane. Looooook at that platter of Chicken Fried Bacon. Yep you read it right, "BACON". It was, and I don't say this too lightly, just about like eating a piece of heaven. In fact I suggested that they change the name of the dish to - Crispy Golden Angel Wings - because pigs are God's gift to the world and when you're a good boy, like me, He gives you bacon .... Chicken Fried .... as a reward. Again I saw, Chicken Fried Steak, and I was not disappointed. This is the one thing I could eat everyday. The steak, even though it is a tenderized piece of chuck blade steak, was breaded and cooked to perfection. So juicy, so tender, oh so so so good. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and soft where near a lump could be found, in fact, that was my only complaint because I like slightly lumpy potatoes. These potatoes were homemade from scratch potatoes, and this I know for sure, because no matter how hard you try, there are always small lumps in even the smoothest of mashed potatoes. Milo's mashed potatoes are not even close to being instant. They are perfect. These potatoes will make you so happy, because of their creaminess and the perfectly seasoned gravy to match. All I can say is .... Yes, please, give me more. Oh it was so incredibly delicious. Please visit Milo's Off the Square in Clarksville, TX. It's worth the lunch stop.
