Came here for a birthday dinner. The old couple that runs the restaurant is sooo sweet. The woman…read moretook our order and did everything - I thought she was actually cooking the food in the kitchen too (she might have been) until I saw a man come out of the kitchen after we had finished our meal and they were sharing a hard-boiled egg together. It was the cutest thing I've ever seen. I took off a star just because I felt like the experience was good, but not amazing. We came on a Saturday night and for the 2.5 hours we were in the restaurant, only one other person came in to have a meal alone. There was no music playing in the restaurant and it was a little eerily quiet. Other tables that weren't occupied by customers had lots of papers on them and clearly weren't for customer seating even though they were in the middle of the restaurant. It was my birthday so we showed up with a cake and the woman was very kind to let us put the cake in their fridge until we were ready for dessert. We ordered 3 meats for Korean BBQ: pork, seafood, and beef. They were all marinated well and were tender and flavorful. We also got the kimchi pancakes, steamed dumplings, and japchae noodles. All the food was delicious!

It was slow so no problem, but service was not very great, almost uncomfortable. The bibimbap was average and fine itself and the price was cheap, I did find some of the banchan to have an off taste, like maybe it was on its way out. Over all I probably wouldn't return and this place had great reviews from a few years back maybe it's different owners now from what I read.

The best thing here is the price -- it's cheap, which is rare for Korean food. The food came out fairly quickly, but since it was served in stoneware, I expected it to be piping hot -- instead, it was just lukewarm. Even worse, the broth was incredibly bland, lacking the depth and seasoning you'd normally expect from this dish. The portion of soondae itself was also disappointing -- maybe 6 inches max, cut up, which felt stingy for a dish centered around it. The banchan (side dishes) included store-bought kimchi and sweet soy peanuts -- nothing special, but not bad either. Overall, it's one of those "you get what you pay for" experiences. The cafeteria-style seating area was a bit dirty, but that's likely not their responsibility. Still, it impacts the overall vibe. Also, no napkins or hand sanitizer available -- both are kept behind the counter, which makes the place feel a bit unwelcoming and overly cautious. After eating, you're expected to place your tray on a rolling cart, which is fair, but reinforces that this is more fast-food than full-service. Overall: A cheap meal that arrives fast, but the soup was bland, the portions were small, and the dining setup could be friendlier.

The meats were good - in particular I enjoyed the Hawaiian steak, shrimp, and squid. I wish there were more vegetable options than just the mushrooms and onions, since there is just so much meat, but since we ordered the 'unlimited,' we just kept asking our server to bring out more mushrooms and onions. My only complaint is that the same tongs were being used to handle both raw and cooked meat - I always learned growing up to not cross-contaminate, and even when we have hot pot at home and similar dining in other restaurants, there are always at least two sets of utensils for this reason.

If I were comparing this to LA BBQ I would have to give it 1 star... if I were to compare it to NY, GA or even VA K-BBQ then it would get 2 stars. But if you are just judging things from Philly proper... I can give it 3 1/2 stars for the attentiveness of the staff and making sure that all the different meats are available and brought quickly. I just really think for the price, the quality of the meat should be much better. I don't know if people are eating too much and the restaurant needs to compensate for it, but some of the meats were cut too thick and the steak tasted a bit older. The best part of the meal were the 2 stews on the side. They were well seasoned and tasted great! I'll be back to try it again and see if there are any improvements.
