I am from Arizona and I have been to this place two times already. Whenever I go to PA, I HAVE TO GO HERE. It's one of my favorite Korean restaurants ever (and I have been to A LOT in the West Coast, Asia, and the especially Korea as well). Their sides are delicious, as well as the entrees of course. My favorite is the Galbijjim (and it's pretty affordable too with the amount of serving compared to the West Coast). We debated where to go for lunch and the decision, DuBu, was a definite WOW!! Fried fish (Ok, this tested my chopstick skills), a salad with ginger dressing, cucumber kimchi, regular kimchi, and a cold noodle salad. Yes, there was a unified WOW emitting from our table. We were happily surprised that such an authentic, tasty Korean restaurant exists near South Jersey without us having to make the trek all the way to Bergen to find that standard. So I heard that the conclusion was that there was no decent Korean restaurant in downtown Philly area, which I found to be true. Someone recommended DuBu so even though it was a bit of a hike (train + uber combo) we decided to make a field trip to try this place. It's located in a big shopping center where HMart is an anchor. When you step inside DuBu, it's like you're transported to Korea. We were recommended SoonDuBu so we both got them. The side dishes were ok. Fried fish was a great touch and just like restaurants in Korea, but I was hoping for a bit more variety. Service was friendly but at times on the slower side. We ordered the donkatsu, LA galbi, and jaeyuk bokkeum and above all, I must say the portions were great. I got the vegetables sondubu it was a nice light dish that had great sides. I definitely enjoyed it. I got the water-based broth, but I feel like the beef broth might have more of a taste to it if you're interested in that overall the ambience was very nice the service. I've been to this place a lot of times with friends and family and they are amazing with the tofu soups, appetizer, and hot stone bibimbap. I was there yesterday with my friend after shopping at H-mart. We decided to go Dubu since is nearby since this is our to go Korean restaurant. But....(to me) it seems there food is not as authentic and good as before. For example, the beef tofu soups in bland and the beef is so chew and dry, the hot stone bibimbap's rice is soft and different than before and last but not less, the pan fried dumpling is no longer pan fried, it is DEEP FRIED, not good. The only dish that was still good is their signature kimchi, fresh and crunchy. Services -- the lady who came and took our order was a little impatient, rushing us to order food. The food here is excellent. We started off with steamed dumplings, and they were delicious but fried dumplings here are my favorite. I had the galbeetang--the rib soup. They must have been cooking for a long time because the ribs were fall off the bone tender. And the broth was really rich and flavorful without being too much. Everyone was pleased with what they got. The service is quick and friendly. We got our food about within 20 minutes. Even when it gets busy, the service is pretty attentive. I eat KBBQ a lot so I was hip to the menu but my family not so much, I felt like our waiter and rude and short with my family. There was a group effort mix up with our food that another waiter wanted us to pay for which didn't seem fair in my opinion so I had to get up from the table and speak to management. Food: I think this is some of the best Korean food in Philadelphia. They have a rather large menu but I would say their speciality is definitely the soondubu. It always comes out boiling hot and I enjoy that they have spicy levels you can choose from. My favorite kind is the oyster soondubu. For side dishes, they always serve their fresh kimchi which is some of the best I've had. You always get a side salad with ginger dressing and a small fried fish. Otherwise, it varies between cucumber kimchi, bean sprouts, short ribs, glass noodles, and some others. Sometimes, I get full just from eating rice and side dishes! When they are not super busy, they will serve the scorched rice soup (tastes toasty like popcorn). Food is consistently good and flavorful. The raw marinated crab is a little expensive but worth it! Super fresh and delicious. Ambiance: Large restaurant that can accommodate larger groups. It can get quite loud during dinner hours and especially with the music blasting in the background. Overall, a very casual restaurant that is clean. Service: Everyone is polite. However, it can be hit or miss. After they serve you your food, they rarely stop by to refill your waters. What a hidden gem! This is my all time favorite Korean restaurant. The name DuBu actually translate to "tofu" so this place specializes in tofu dishes. I'm a sucker for tofu so I got so excited when I saw all these options that included tofu. Usually at Korean restaurants I either go for the spicy squid, tofu soup, or the galbi ribs. I can't believe they have the spicy squid with tofu option. That's like two of my favorite protein in one dish, of course I cannot resist! We ended up ordering the spicy squid tofu and my partner got the spicy pork kimchi tofu. I like how the sauces are different in both of the dishes. They lean towards of a sweet and savory type of sauce combo. I definitely like the squid one better. It is also not spicy which is good because we're not the best with hot spicy. Okay let's talk about the bonchon. They are unbelievably generous with the complimentary side dishes they serve. They came out with marinated short ribs, fried fish, broccoli, side salad, and kimchi! You can also ask for unlimited refills on any of the dishes and the staffs are so friendly and nonjudgmental. Although items like the salad and broccoli are kind of a strange Korean bonchon, we still enjoyed those vegetables. The short ribs were so good my partner couldn't stop talking about it. The entree portion sizes are huge! You can easily share one of those entree with two people. We ended up taking half of it to go which was the perfect amount for another meal. Some of the bonchon we didn't finish so we also packed that to go as well. Side note on the water they serve - it's infused with barley tea. That's why is has an ashy taste! (Barley tea is healthy for you and good for digestion) This place is located right next to the HMart so if you're ever shopping for your Asian grocery, this is a place you can't miss! I have never written a yelp review before but the food at DuBu is so good I am compelled. The soon dubu soup is so good it re-wired my brain. I didn't even think I liked tofu before. Now I dream about the army soon dubu. It is my roman empire. I am not joking. It has become one of my all time comfort foods. It is the perfect blend of rich, spicy, & savory. Their spicy pork and kimchi bimbimbap is also great as are the banchan - especially the cucumbers & croaker. The food also holds up great for takeout/delivery - including the soup which is a feat.
