Lazy Sunday after an unsuccessful Memorial Day beach weekend. It was cold and rainy all weekend but…read morewe decided to hit up some beef noodle soup place to warm up. On this cold almost summer day, Nan Zhou was hustling and bustling. Separate parties at the same round table and clients coming in and out of the restaurant facade. Warm lighting and active banter. I received my bowl of beef noodle soup was pretty satisfied. Beef was tender with flavorful bites of fattiness. Somehow, the meat tastes beefier than beef. The cilantro had potent herbaceous flavor with some spinach(?) and mustard greens. Noodles were pleasantly chewy w variation in texture. Lowkey, everything else was alright. I like to be nice so I'll say no more. Cucumbers were fine

This place was packed, which is always a good sign, and even with that the staff stayed super prompt and professional. The house special was my favorite. I got it with the knife-cut noodles and it was perfect with the broth. The noodles had that slightly uneven, chewy texture that really holds onto the soup. I never thought I'd be the type to talk about "mouthfeel" but here we are. The broth itself was rich and savory with a deep beef flavor, a little bit of oil on top that adds body without feeling too heavy. It's that classic, comforting Chinese beef noodle soup done really well. I added a braised egg, which had great flavor soaked into it, though it was served cold, which threw me off a bit. The mapo tofu with noodles was also really solid. It had that signature spicy, numbing kick from the Sichuan peppercorns, balanced with a savory, slightly salty sauce. The tofu was soft and silky, and mixing it with the noodles made it extra satisfying. It's got some heat but not overwhelming, just enough to keep you going back for another bite. The shrimp stir fry was lighter but still flavorful. The shrimp were cooked well, tender with a slight snap, and the sauce leaned more on the savory side with a mild sweetness. It felt like a nice balance alongside the heavier noodle dishes. Couple practical things: it's cash only, but there's an ATM right by the seating area which makes it easy. And the portions are generous for the price, so it feels like a really good deal. Overall, super satisfying spot. Busy, a little chaotic, but the food absolutely delivers. Definitely a go-to if you're craving hand-pulled noodles.

The prices were also reasonable. My sister ordered several appetizers for the table, and then we each ordered an entree. For appetizers, we had the cucumber salad with garlic, the scallion pancake, and the shredded pig ear. The cucumber salad was fresh and tasty. I also enjoyed the scallion pancake with dipping sauce, but I was not a fan of the shredded pig ear with chili oil. The texture was just too rubbery. As an entree, I ordered and loved their huge bowl of hot and sour soup. It was one of the best hot and sour soups I've ever tasted. Although it says one serving, it was large enough to be a meal. The spice level was just right, and the broth was rich and complex. However, being at a restaurant known for soup dumplings, I had to try the Lucky Six Soup Dumplings which ranged from black truffle to crab meat and pork. It was fun trying each type of dumpling (6 total), with the black truffle being my favorite. Be advised, they can be a challenge to eat as you want to slurp up all the soup inside without any spilling out. We were allowed to bring our own cake which was served by their cool robot. Human service was also efficient! Overall, a fun experience at a unique restaurant.

The upside is that it was inexpensive, which is what drew me there in the first place. My very first time eating there in March 2026. I'll start with the good: the Hong Kong wonton soup, the egg drop soup, & the beef chow fun. I would return for these items. The bad: the duck rolls, the shrimp with lobster sauce. The duck rolls, I took one bite, and that was enough. The duck was dry, it didn't have good flavor, I'm not sure if it was particularly fresh. It tasted like it could be the duck that's about to be shrink. The shrimp in lobster sauce was the worst I've ever had. Absolutely no taste. I do not use condiments and I had to put soy sauce in it. I have hypertension, I do not use soy sauce! I had to use it to choke it down. That was the most expensive dish and almost $17 so no way that was being wasted. And there was barely any shrimp in it. The ugly: The egg roll & crispy fried noodles. The oil must be very old. The egg roll was so dark and soft with oil that the oil was dripping off of it and filling the little wax paper bag. The noodles were also too dark and tasted gross like being fried and old oil. I would never get anything fried from this place ever.

Though we hadn't been there in years, Golden Bowl came to mind. Consensus: we spent a bit more than we usually do, but the food was a couple of notches better. As a point of comparison, we ordered our usual soups: hot & sour and egg-drop wonton. Hot & sour was thick and spicy. (To temper the heat, I cut my serving with spoonfuls of egg-drop.) Wontons were nicely filled and less doughy than our usual take-outs. Two thumbs up for the soup. Mongolian Beef is my husband's favorite. We both agreed that Golden Bowl's version is pretty good. Our other dish, Sizzling Triple Delight, is best eaten in the restaurant. Nothing was sizzling, but the components -- beef, chicken, shrimp and vegetables -- were well prepared. Broccoli was al dente and the brown sauce was rich and flavorful. All-in-all, branching out paid off. We'll most assuredly do it again.

The homemade DanDan noodles were our favorite, which are served with ground pork in a spicy peanut sauce. We also got the three cup chicken which was so good, with a sweet, licorice-like glaze. We had the ginger and scallion dish and was not our favorite, as the chicken had a unique consistency and was quite limp. Overall, good service and a relaxing ambiance in a bustling city.

Unfortunately the experience at pickup wasn't the best. I asked if they had included utensils and the gentleman at the counter said no. I asked for some since I was bringing the food back to my hotel and wouldn't have anything to eat with. He was pretty dismissive and didn't seem to want to give me anything. (I also didn't get any napkins.) Just a little strange when ordering takeout, utensils should be included right? Or at the very least be readily given out when requested? He begrudgingly gave me 2 pairs of chopsticks and a fork, said he ran out of spoons. I didn't notice the lack of napkins until I got back. Now for the food. We ordered dan dan noodles, a chicken lo mein, and Taiwanese minced pork rice. The noodle dishes were decent but the lo mein was a bit too al dente for our liking...especially for our young son. Didn't get a chance to eat the rice because we were all too full from the noodles. Appreciate the generous portions at least. Will see if the rice will make it home safely with us and reheats well. Can't speak on the ambience. Wasn't in there long enough to really look around. Will I order from them again or try in person in the future? I'm not sure. I wasn't blown away by the food or service so...

This was my first visit to this restaurant, so I ordered my go to favorites. Drunken noodles with chicken, and Thai basil fried rice with chicken. I ordered extra chicken with the noodles as I had read another review saying that the dish was "vegetable heavy"...which I didn't find to be the case. I do think I may have been disappointed had I not doubled the chicken, but that's only because the overall portion was big, and there may not have been enough chicken to "balance" the other elements of the dish. My only criticism is this... (And it's significant) I ordered medium spice level, as I like a little "kick"...and these dishes were so hot that they were nearly unbearable to eat! Painful going in...and likely to be painful going out!! I have NEVER had a Thai dish prepared any hotter. EVER! My eyes were watering so much so that I couldn't see, my lips and throat were burning...and I was dripping sweat. To be honest, I kinda wondered if the cook was about to quit... and this was going to be his way of sticking it to the owner! ;) I can't imagine what a "spicy" choice in preparation would have tasted like. Well truthfully...it's likely I wouldn't have been able to taste anything! I'm anything but a wimp when it comes to spicy food. (I travel with packets of hot pepper blend for crying out loud). But the way this was prepared to a "MEDIUM" spice level...was OBSCENELY hot! And it took away of the enjoyment of eating what I'm sure is otherwise really good Thai food. I won't hesitate to return...after I heal...but I will definitely be making some changes to my "heat level" request! Don't say I didn't warn ya!

It looked like they were getting ready to close up but was reassured they were open for business. My friend and I decided to sit down anyway, keeping our coats on for sure. Upon looking around it appears that this place is maybe used as a night club/bar with DJ for the students in UCity rather than for regular hours business. Only one other table sat while we were there. Putting the strange inside aside, we ordered a couple apps and noodle soups for our meal. The two appetizers were okay. I found the cucumbers to be a bit soggy and not freshly sliced as they normally would be. The chicken appetizer was nice, just a little un even in temperature but good crispy outside. For our noodle soups, these were very good and the flavor in broth was nice, plus good portioned. Overall, it might be best to grab takeout here and stick to the noodle soups or come later into the dinner service when it's likely more lively than a late afternoon lunch.
