This is the shorter side- but still long enough of a hike. It took about an hour each way. Beautiful at the top and we had a 360 of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. It was kept SO clean that it was just so beautiful. When hiking, we saw wildlife, so just be prepared. Recommendation: bring a lunch with you and go mid day. It's beautiful to sit at the top of the mountain and eat!

You need to be careful to watch the trail markers, and the Wapack Trail has some very rocky parts, but it's a great hike. Love that there's a gift shop at the top & latrines at both the top & bottom. There's also the escape route that you could walk down the auto road if you needed to. My Garmin said I burned 800 calories. Awesome! Beautiful hike & healthily too.

The Wapack trail (1.4 miles) involves lots of scrambling on rocks and over roots. We hiked on a misty, drizzly October morning. The visibility was not great: all we could see was mist. But coming from the mountain desert, we loved seeing the ferns and the foliage and the huge trees and all the granite. We didn't come prepared with real hiking boots, but our sneakers were grippy enough to handle climbing up the rocks, even in light rain. We enjoyed climbing to the almost-top of the fire tower and admiring the view from above. The informational signs about the raptor migration near the top were neat. Our $12 admission for three people in one car was just right.

I was assigned a lakefront cottage that was extremely spacious and quite comfortable. There are more modern, and more fully outfitted, condos but I enjoyed the scenic view and quite setting of my cottage. Pilgrim Pines is a venue that hosts a variety of visitors. There are summer camps, conferences and, likely, retreats but my visit was with a group of hikers and artists who stayed on property from Sunday through Friday. Meals are held in the main dining room and are served buffet-style which made it easy to enjoy what I wanted and to the leave the rest for others. Guests are expected to place dirty dishes and glassware in a bin which makes for a quick and easy clean up. There is a 2 1/2 mile loop around the lake that can be enjoyed during a leisurely walk or a more ambitious run. There are also trails and dirt roads/paths nearby for additional outdoor excursions. The water was a little too cold for my tastes but the lake seemed to be inviting and would certainly provide a smooth place to canoe. There is a small store on property with hours that vary according to need. It offered a lovely selection of toys for children, sweet treats, Christmas ornaments and other holiday decor, jewelry, original paintings and some items representative of the region. Definitely worth checking out if you can manage to be around when staff opens it up for business. Every staff member I encountered added to the overall enjoyable experience of staying here. It was always easy to strike up a conversation or ask for any assistance. A lovely chapel on property did double duty as a morning yoga studio and an evening presentation spot for guest speakers. The real highlight of the stay, particularly after an exhausting day hike, was the shower. It had great water pressure and hot water that helped to make the muscles feel much better. Due to the religious affiliations of this property alcohol is off limits. Guests are welcome to enjoy the books, games, puzzles and even the TV found in the main lodge but for me the chance to enjoy the outdoors or just curl up with a book in my little lakeside nook was all I needed!

Now we have a basic solar kit to keep the batteries charged I was ready to go for it. This place is BEAUTIFUL. Pros and cons aside for a minute, we didn't want to leave. My husband is the beach lover but said this was probably his favorite we've camped at so far. (Granted some of it had to do with it being less than perfect weather and come Sunday morning we had almost the whole section to ourselves.) In our opinion the north side is nicer, and more set up size-wise for trailers. Any site from 101-112 is truly lake side and you can put your kayak or canoe in the lake right from there. We stayed at 116, and that section is more of a steep drop off but you still have wonderful lake views. But, it is also set up somewhat awkwardly with having to drive over the grass with not super clear markings. (119 is in front of 116 FYI. We felt bad setting up as we blocked some of their view.) That said, if you camp with friends, esp. tent camping it's a great area to reserve. The row of pull-through sites one up from the lake-side still offer a great water view and nice privacy between. The drawback is that if you are a family with young kids the access to the beach/swimming area is over at the east side. The bathrooms on the north side are small, very rustic and don't have dishwashing stations. However the ladies room shower has been updated to a real shower head and dial control that will let you regulate the hot water and stays on, not like the push button ones at Scusset or Salisbury! They were as clean as they could be, meaning they are old with an eroded cement floor so not much could be done. Oh and other reviews have mentions the traffic noise from 202 is loud at those sites that are nearest to roadway, and yes, we rode our bikes over there and it was terrible. And FYI some of the east side noise travels across the lake if you are at 113-118. Overall a totally different experience from Horseneck Beach, Scusset or Salisbury if you've been to those, but we really enjoyed it.

Instructors are exceptional. Nikki (5 hours) brings a wealth of English riding discipline and applies it to our lessons. Julia (1 hour) felt like a continuation of the work I was doing with Nikki, yet obviously with her own style. Each lesson is focused on growing the basics. Both instructors are very mindful of your body language, not just the mechanics and answer questions providing insight into horse behaviour based on your interactions. They keep the horse consistent . For all this I will continue to drive 2 hours round trip for two lessons (30 min ea) once a week! Very disappointing that they wouldn't reschedule us and only offered a 50% discount, citing their cancellation policy and having to adjust their staffing. To be clear, we did not ask to cancel; we asked to reschedule our trail ride due to a medical emergency. Their policy COULD allow for exceptions in circumstances like this, but they chose not to make one. Given the advance notice we provided, the ranch had the opportunity to adjust staffing accordingly. The Ranch also suggested that I could have purchased the optional ticket insurance at booking for added flexibility. But I did not plan to break my finger or require the flexibility to reschedule. Unexpected events happen, but unfortunately your response suggests that protecting revenue takes precedence over accommodating customers facing genuine emergencies. Their "well wishes" feels disingenuous when it is paired with a refusal to either (1) honor the ride at a later date without penalty or (2) provide a full refund. Extremely disappointing.

Some places they sell you wet wood that barely catches fire -Dog friendly Cons: -The campsites are not very private. We felt on display and could hear/see/smell everything going on at the campsite next to us. It would have maybe been okay if we had a group of friends reserve many sites next to each other. However, the sites were still close together and very close to the road everyone drives on to get to and from. -No alcohol allowed? I understand noise rules and a code of conduct, but half the fun of camping is sitting around a fire with a beer. -The staff did not enforce quiet hours or the dogs on leash rules. Given how close everyone was, it would have been nice to have quiet hours enforced.

The park has changed little though due to covid staffing levels there is no one to take payments so it is now free! Staff were very friendly both times. On the initial visit I had a child and dog in tow and while pets are not allowed in the pond they let us know they could splash along the riverbed which made for a fun pastime. This time due to the drought one of the branches of the river leading to the spillway was largely dried up, but the other was gurgling along. The water was a great temperature for a hot day but is muddy, and I came out with my arms brown from dirt. There are also tadpoles which may be a plus or minus for you. By moving deeper you hit water with a current that is cooler, so you can go where you feel comfortable. No lifeguards were on duty but the roped in areas for swimming were small. To cool off you will do fine, but serious swimmers will be disappointed. For a low key destination geared to family fun this place is solid.
