Amazing experience, the room was fun and creative, but what really made it was the staff. We went in for our son's 5th birthday and they hid custom touches in the room that were actually a part of the escape! They also hid a birthday card and balloon in there and had a piece sing happy birthday. We can't recommend them enough. We completed Assistant 2.0 and The Observatory back to back, and they were two of our favorite rooms all time! Each had unique puzzles and creative paths to work through the rooms. The game masters put a lot of care and attention into making these challenging but smooth experiences. We highly recommend doing both rooms! We were successful with a team of two, but they would also be great for 3-4 people. Check them out when you're in the area! read more

Very thoughtful, challenging yet logical design, lots of unique pieces and incredible amount of love and labor that went into the place. My husband and I just completed all 3 rooms at The Gate Escape in Leominster, MA. We consider ourselves enthusiasts, having completed ~35 rooms in the past 3 years. First, I will start off the review by saying that Rene is one of the most passionate and friendly escape room owners and Game Masters that we have ever met. He clearly puts his blood, sweat, and tears into every inch of these rooms. Next, let me go through a brief pro/con for each room in the order we played them in: DJ Death Pros: This room is just a great time. Between the soft ball puzzles and the amazing soundtrack, I can't imagine anyone not having a great time in this room. There was enough of a mix of mental and physical that it really made the time fly. Cons: as a team of 2, we completed this whole room in about 34 minutes. Not too bad for a 45 minute room, but had we come with a larger group it may have fallen a bit short. The Assistant Pros: A nice, vanilla escape room. I can see this being an amazing time for a big group for a night out. Nothing was too crazy difficult and several of the puzzles were nonlinear so everyone could be working in different parts of the room instead of all clustered up waiting. Cons: Probably our own bias, but not ideally suited for just a pair. There was a lot of searching that ate up tons of time, and there wasn't a strong sense of flow from one puzzle to the next. There were also a few solutions that felt like a bit of a stretch. The Observatory Pros: we came specifically for this room because it was hyped to have a unique reveal and it definitely did. We did this one with a larger group (6) and it kept everyone busy for almost the full 90 minutes. It really forced teamwork but also allowed everyone to have individual moments to shine. Cons: could use a bit of refinement. One puzzle in particular had way too many elements involved in the solution, in our opinion, and people were getting frustrated. With a couple simple tweaks it easily could have been one of the best puzzles (and rooms) that we have done. Overall, I would highly recommend that you give The Gate Escape a try if you're ever in the area. It's definitely a good time and a great way to spend an hour or two with family and friends. If you only could choose 1, I'd recommend DJ Death for smaller groups and The Assistant for larger. I would save The Observatory for those escapers who have a few rooms under their belt. read more

Beyond AMAZING! We are still talking about how greathe experience was. The game was challenging, engaging, and great mix of puzzle types. The physics of the room still blows my mind. The gentleman who hosted the game is such a delight and clearly loves what he does - it was infectious! It is clear a lot of love went into the design of the game and it didn't go unnoticed. We came to escape the room with only 5 people and finished the game with over 5 minutes left to spare. We chose the professor assistant puzzle. The owner was very attentive during the game and we needed only a few nudges. He obviouly cares a great deal for the games during discussions both before and after. The puzzles were entertaining and enough of them to keep it fun, plus it seemed to flow nicely. 5-6 people is perfect. The puzzles could be broken up during some of the game and everyone added to the solution. Would return for another room. read more

We had a great time in the DJ Death room. The choice of music was fantastic!!!! The host was terrific and even though we were late because we got lost, he still let us in and was super nice. BTW we got out in 33 minutes. (Our best time yet) I highly recommend this place! Been to a few others that are not as good. The puzzles are challenging and clever but not impossible. Rene may be the most passionate, enthusiastic, friendly game operator / owner we've ever met. His love of escape rooms shines in his demeanor, conversation, and desire to build unique games. We had a blast playing The Assistant and The Observatory as a couple (though for optimal gameplay, I'd recommend 4+ players). The games contained fun, interesting puzzles within elaborate, hand-built sets. I appreciate how he continually takes in customer feedback to clarify and smooth gameflow. The puzzles were challenging, but fair and clued appropriately. The Assistant is also the first lab-themed escape room we've played that did NOT include the Periodic Table - bonus points for originality! For context, I've played ~200 escape rooms. read more

We went to The Gate Escape on a whim and were so impressed that we were eager to get back as soon as we could. We did The Assistant and The Observatory so far and look forward to getting back to do Dr.Death. The owner is incredibly personable and creative which is evident during the game as well as after. We escaped from "The Assistant" on Saturday night. I was a great experience all around! The room was very well laid out with a lot of detail. There was a lot to do, but without being overwhelming, so each member could work on different things while still working as a team for the common goal. I would consider myself an escape room enthusiast. I have done escape rooms all over Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I was fortunate enough to BETA test The Assistant at The Gate Escape in December 2016. Our group of 4 included two people who had never experienced escape rooms before. We had a blast! The puzzles consisted of numerical, physical and visual. My favorite puzzle was one that I have never seen before in that particular context. The theme is well-imagined and executed. Our group visited The Gate Escape for the first time last week. We are not new to playing escape rooms, as we consider ourselves enthusiasts and have played most of the rooms in the area, but we were impressed by our experience here, and even consider this our favorite room played thus far! "The First Assistant" was a pleasure to meet, and our time in the room went quickly and smoothly. The room was creatively done with submersion elements, and there was a good mix of quality puzzles. We had a lot of fun, and were happy that we "escaped" before our time was up (even though we were stumped at one point and were doubting our success!). We had a little time to chat with the owner afterwards and talk about the room and process, and we left happy about our experience here. It's very easy to see that the owner has put a lot of effort and care into designing the room and entire experience! We will gladly return to play again when the second room opens soon! read more
