Only 1.1 mile from trailhead to the first view point: Mount Watatic. In March 2018, we used microspikes. The view from top was really good. We continued further to NH and beyond but not much better view. I want to come back here when it gets green and in fall.

At the top of Watatic with my 11 and 12 year old and our 7 year old lab!

This is a great easy 1.5 hour up and down hike just an hour or so from where we live in Hudson, MA. We like it better than Wachusett as it is a bit longer and more difficult. We hiked up the Yellow Arrow Trail but decided to take the logging road back down. BIG MISTAKE. It goes down the backside of the mountain. So with that, we had to hike back up the backside and back down the front-side (Yellow Arrow Trail). With this said, it was a great 3-hour hike, which now I know I can do there if I want do a longer hike, the downfall is we had 3 Kids with us, not enough water and our elder-dog. It should have been marked that the logging trail leads to the back-side of the mountain and also the trail should be marked on the way back up. So the good part is I now know I can make Watatic more difficult with a 3 hour hike!! The bad part is that this could happen to families with smaller children and later in the day could be dangerous because the backside up is actually a bit more difficult. If you do take the logging road or backside down, there is a nice lake at the bottom and it's a nice place to hang, rest and picnic.

    Mount Wachusett from Mount Watatic.

Great, short hike with very rewarding summit views! Easy hike for winter too, just bring spikes / traction. Entire summit covered in blueberry bushes - good picking in mid-late July! :)

View from the top is impressive

Love this little hike onto a small summit that overtakes a spectacular view. My pup loved it even more.

Trails are clean & the hike is great! Love the steep side vs the long trail! Takes 10-20 minutes to get to the top :)

You'll feel how in-shape you are or aren't for hiking :-) We hiked the rustically beautiful well-maintained Marion Davis trail up from NH-101 Wilton Rd to the 2290 ft peak in about 90 minutes, then returned the easier way down Miller State Park Road in about half that time. There were rocky outcroppings and not-yet-greening (Apr 2026) grey-brown hardwood forests. Nearer the summit, there were spruce. At the top, we talked with friendly helpful rangers, (used the restrooms), and climbed the Fire Tower. We could see the taller Grand Monadnock Mountain to the west, and we could see wide open vistas, from the summit, and from halfway down Miller Rd. where the power lines cross the road. The cost was $4 per adult, $2 for kids, and free for seniors. If there's no ranger at the Miller State Park entrance, you can pay "the Iron Ranger" (the metal drop-box :-). I think there's a small souvenir shop at the summit, but we didn't check it out. And you can drive up and park at the summit when you're not up for the hike. By the way, we guessed that "Pack" meant "small". Apparently "Monadnock" is the name the Abenacki gave it as a "stand-alone" remnant of an ancient mountain range.

Forgot the bug spray which would have kept the critters at bay with much of the trail having slow or puddled water. Parking wasn't too crowded, $15 for access to park. Snack and gift shop in the lot and the headquarters building just up the trail. Great restroom facility to use prior to starting the hike as well. Very rocky terrain all the way up, clearly marked with white dots (crosses as well for the return). Enjoyed the fact there were multiple volunteer guides hiking or positioned at locations (one steady at fork for dot/cross) if needed. Had low reception all through the hike for emergencies as well. Beautiful views towards the top and of course 360 once on the summit. Definitely worth the time spent. Pack in pack out, bring water and snacks along with the spray (both bug and sun)! Enjoyed a quick snack on the top with the views and a quick tsp of the marker before heading back down. Time to get up to the peak, what are you waiting for?!

Whether it is ice and snow with trax on or wet leaves on a steep incline, you can bet on a challenge. The most commonly used trail up the mountain is the 2 mile (one way), White Dot trail. It is well marked and easily followed. The elevation gain is rapid, as this is a shorter hike. The views are absolutely stellar from the summit. There is a small shop at the base and you receive a map upon entry with basic guidelines and trails. If you are into the outdoors, I highly recommend this spot! Laces up!

But something MAGICAL happens when you see sculptures displayed in the woods. You'll see these sculptures with a whole new appreciation. There's art here from sculptors from all over the world. And there's a nice variety as well. A nice map is available in the parking area to help you navigate. There's signage for each piece and some have explanations as well to enrich your understanding. Some of the trail signage is less than clear but you're always close to a numbered sculpture so you can find exactly where you are on your map. A few tips: - Wear sneakers or hiking shoes as some of the trails are a bit rough. - Be prepared to walk and climb. There are 140 acres, multiple trails and much of it involves climbing up (or down) - Bring the kids! Most kids will love the walk through the woods and will enjoy discovering each new sculpture. - Maps are available in the parking area, but print your own (in color) ahead of time if possible. - Most of the sculptures are up from the parking area. I recommend walking up the paved Parking Trail to get started. Yes it's a bit longer but easier and there's some great sculptures on it. When you get to #26- Community and Diversity, you are at a junction and you can pick up trails through the woods for most of the place. - Allow at least 2-3 hours or you will feel like you missed out. By the way the variety of mushrooms was fantastic in August. Just another treat in a wonderful place. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
