Miss Lady ..

The empanadas are made earlier in the day so once you heat it up, it's a little bit chewy. I will say that it is a lot of shredded chicken inside the empanada. The cheese one was much smaller and a bit bland. I didn't find it tasty. I wouldn't really recommend it. It looks good though, and The View from inside in the summertime with the open front looks really cool.

I was pretty disappointed with this place, the good thing I guess the empanadas were huge I got the beef empanadas and it was pretty cheap, I don't u sweat and why they put raisins in my opinion it ruins the whole taste of the empanada, I appreciate that they are making everything from scratch but to be honest the meat tasted bland, it didn't really taste like anything to be honest but I appreciate them making it from scratch it just didn't taste good to me if I'm being honest

After reading about this place in so many "Kensington market must-eats" lists, decided to try their empanadas. Ordered the jumbo empanada with chicken (around $7CAD). I asked the lady to reheat it and still felt at room temperature after few minutes of being reheated. I didn't like the empanada, it was very bland, doughy and the chicken was dry.

Half eaten mini Empanadas going to waste!

This is my third time coming to this place and I still don't understand the hype of this place - Empanadas are so MEH and the people who work here are not even nice unless you're one of their kind. The girl on the cash wasn't very helpful when I tried asking questions eventhough the place is not busy. I came back again today to try their mini Empanadas coz my work is having a South American theme Potluck. I tried all 3 - Beef, Chicken and Veggies and I can't even eat them even though they're minis. Empanadas either taste bland and dry (Chicken) or very sweet (Beef). The only thing that's passable is the Veggie Empanada but still not that great. Jumbo Empanadas - three tries and you're out. Won't be coming back to your store that's for sure!

When they mean jumbo, they really mean it. I came here without knowing the actual sizes until I saw these bad boys hanging on the racks ready to be heated up. I got two, one for here and the other to go. They were pretty standard and also filling which is a plus! Service was alright, they did ask for tips which is weird because they don't serve you the food, they just tell you your order is ready and you go pick it up at the counter. This place has been on my list for a long time and I am glad I can check another place off my list.

Empanadas, Chilean salad & corn pie
Jasmine L.

Found this Chilean hole-in-the wall place tucked away in kesington market. It's a family run, low-key, cheap eats that's surprisingly very satisfying. Corn pie (5/5) $8.50 - hands down my FAVOURITE dish, I've never had anything like it. The mixture of egg, sweet corns, chicken & ground beef, olives and onions just was the perfect balance of sweet and salty. I loved the sprinkles of raisins within too! Chicken & Beef jumbo empanadas (3.5/5) $4.50 each - the portions were huge, came with salsa on the side, empanada dough was thick & a bit dry, but the meat sauces within definitely made up for it. There was a good amount of meat filling as well, the beef was my personal favourite. Chilean salad (3/5) $5.50 - portion size was big, everything in it was quite standard, but I liked how much avocado they had !

How do I rate my first experience with empanadas?? I found it A-OK! For $3.99, my beef empanadas is big and filling!! This place is so busy and it took a long time to get my food... But I wish they warmed up my empanadas a little longer since it was still a little cold inside. The inside of the restaurant is small and cramped.. I can barely slide myself into the chairs.. or maybe I just been eating too much??

This is literally my fave salad in the world. I dream of this salad. Try it!!

I have dreams about how good their avocado salad is. Consistently fresh salad composed of butter lettuce, dressed lightly with cilantro and vinegar, topped with slices of ripe avocado, and layered with fresh tomato, onion, and broccoli. I am not lying when I say this is my fave salad in the world. If I am not mistaken, it is also a vegan option - TRY IT PEOPLE!! Ok that was intense, just really in love with this salad :P My fave empanada is the cheese variety (which seems fried but is absolutely delicious), followed closely by the chicken. Their salsa is killer good - super flavorful and a bit spicy! I love to dump a bunch of this into my empanada; flavour overload. This is a must stop for me anytime I visit Kensington Market.

The empanada had too much dough (very thick) and not enough filling. Both the dough / crust and filling didn't have much flavour. The Chilean Salad was alright but tasted like it was just lettuce with vinegar.

Beef empanada

We heard about this place in Kensington Market and were excited after hearing its history, from when it started from a food cart and grew into its own storefront. Maybe the hype got in the way, but quality was average in comparison. Empanadas were reheated in an oven and tasted lukewarm, even flavourless without the salsa (which was extra). Was a nice try, but definitely will not return.

The interior of the beef empanada

Jumbo, Huge, maybe not gigantic but difficult rely quite large, are the many words I would use to describe the empanadas here. And a good comparison is usually right across the street in this area. I would also say it delicious, hearty, and well balanced. So my partner and I stopped here after going to moo frites on our personal little food adventure. We walked in on a good tour and they had a miniature version of the empanada and humita that are on the menu. We decided to get the same but in the original jumbo size. The server recommended the beef and I asked about the other item and got the humita. The prices here are phenomenal, almost reminds me of growing up and grabbing a beef patty from the corner store for $1. With inflation and increased wages it's incredible that this empanada is only $5. Back to the well balanced part about this beef empanada. There are raisin in here. And normally I'm not a huge fan or raisin in my food, on their own fine, but not with my savoury foods. I had to ask them to identify it, I could have sworn it was a cranberry, olive, or anything but a raisin. Partner corner: it tasted grapey which doesn't make sense. (Dehydrated grape and then rehydrated raisin from the beef juices). I can't believe she could distinguish the taste. Anyways with the egg in there is just delicious. The juiciness of the beef, the egg and the raisin just work. And with the pico de gallo, it add more brightness. The humita as well was this moist delicious corn tamale-like thing. I've never had or heard of a humita so it's probably just it's own thing. It's like a warm corn on the cob but in like a lumpy mash potato form. The texture from the not paste like corn mixture, the sweetness and starchiness of the corn. Again the salsa/pico, works to refresh you palate after having several bites. Partner corner: the humita taste better with the pico, but the empanada you could do without. A fabulous place for cheap filling lunch time meal or just a delectable enjoyment of a larger than normal tasty treat. I will definitely swing by to try other fillings or just to pick up another beef empanada or humita.

Very cozy and friendly atmosphere. And authentic empanadas! I had chicken empanadas which has black olive and boiled egg inside. So yum and cheap!

Chicken and cheese empanada

This restaurant was listed as one of the top places to visit in Kensignton Market. Piece of advice... the Jumbo part is real! We tried the chicken, beef and cheese empanadas. All were delicious but my personal favorite is the chicken empanada. If you check it out let me know your favorite!

This is such a restaurant. But for the greater good, and because it totally deserves to be hyped up, I'm gonna share this gem with you! Granted, I have only been here once and I had never had Nicaraguan food before but everything this restaurant served up from drinks to appetizers to mains to dessert was unbelievable. It may look like nothing special on paper and even look understated on the plate but once it's in your mouth your tastebuds are in for a ride! Let me explain a bit more...the "tacos" look like a sundae collided with a salad on the plate but when you break it up and try it the crunch and the sweet and the sour just works like magic! I ordered the Churrasco but swapped out the mashed potato with rice and beans - how the Nicaraguans eat it I was told - and boy was I glad I listened! I have never downed so much rice and beans so quickly in my life; normally I avoid them so that's testament to how tasty it was. 3 out of all 3 of the desserts were delicious but the standout favourite among my party was surprisingly the cheesecake, so don't knock it till you try it. The atmosphere is lively and colourful, and the service was great too! That's it; I think I've shared enough - you're welcome

The restaurant stayed busy throughout dinner, with a steady flow of customers coming in, and after the meal I could understand why. We started with the soup of the day, which was an oxtail soup. It tasted very fresh, rich, and comforting, with a lovely fragrance that made it especially satisfying. For the main course, we ordered the fish of the day, a whole fried sea bass, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was crispy outside, tender inside, and full of flavor without feeling heavy. It also came with fried plantains, which were such a nice touch and made the meal feel even more special. Overall, this was a wonderful first experience with Nicaraguan cuisine, and definitely a place I would happily come back to.

The…read moreseafood dishes are filled with various different kinds of high-quality seafood to the brim (more protein than rice). All the staff are so friendly - from the waitstaff to the chefs / owners and kitchen staff, everyone in the restaurant seems to exhibit the Latin American hospitality and friendliness. The place feels homey, cozy, and festive with the music in the background (from the TV screen on the wall), and big photos depicting different places in Colombia along the wall. Ambience is very laid-back and casual, with amazing food that tastes homemade and authentic. It took a while for the food to cook and come out (about 40 minutes) - mostly because of the Cazuela de Mariscos (seafood soup) that took the longest to cook. It was also during a very busy time on a weekend. They seemed to have a constant flow of incoming catering and take-out orders (a good sign), and the restaurant itself was packed. All / most mains come with coconut rice, salad, and tostones (fried plantains). As for drinks, you can order freshly squeezed juices in either water or milk. We ordered the fresh strawberry & blackberry juice in water, as the one in milk would make it more like a smoothie. Each juice order comes in a jug (whether it be a small or large jug). This came as a surprise to us - really good value for such a large volume of juice ($6 for a whole "small" jug that turned out to be quite big, enough to refill each glass a few times for 2 people). The juice itself tasted fresh, natural, and refreshing. Dishes that we tried: 1) Filete de Tilapia con Camarones (grilled tilapia fish fillet & shrimps with coconut rice, plantain, and salad) - Big pieces of fish and lots of small shrimps, in a very delectable sauce. 2) Arroz Marinero (seafood rice with plantain & salad) - Loved this dish. The rice was a bit soupy which I liked. It was a bit like a soupy paella (including the rice) - very delicious and packed with various kinds of seafood. 3) Cazuela de Mariscos (seafood soup with coconut rice, plantain, and salad) - Very creamy soup, like a chowder. I'm not a big fan of chowders / cream-based soups in general, but others liked it and said this was good. 4) SIDE: Ensalada (House Salad) 5) Arepa de Chocolo con Queso (sweet corn dough with cheese) All of the main dishes were EXCELLENT - loved the mixed seafood (fish fillet, shrimps, octopus, squid, etc.). There was so much seafood in every dish. In most places, you get more carbs / rice compared to the protein. Here, it was the opposite. The coconut rice was a bit dry but it's decent - good to soak up the sauces of the main dishes. The salad is just shredded cabbage and carrot with big sliced tomato. I was a big fan of the salad dressing (some creamy mayo-like dressing), but luckily the dressing was only at the top of the salad (the bottom part of the salad remained fresh and crunchy, which I liked). We ordered the Arepa de Chocolo con Queso for to go. It was different than the Venezuelan arepa that I'm used to. The Colombian arepa seemed to be sweeter and more buttery. It probably would've been better if it was eaten right after it was freshly made, and while it was still warm. There was a lot of cheese in the arepa, giving it a nice salty and savoury contrast to the sweet corn dough. After you're done the meal, you go up to the counter to pay (instead of having the bill brought to your table). Great food overall - I would not hesitate to come back.

Pork tenderloin was pretty tasty but tough & dry especially for a tenderloin. Rice was decent, with a slight flavour, but a bit mushy. Plantain was crispy. The restaurant interior was decorated quite nicely but was very warm (in summer) & service was disorganised & some servers didn't speak English well so communication was sometimes difficult. I asked if the pork tenderloin had a sauce; they said no but it came with a tomato & peppers sauce. They also billed me wrongly.

Since we'd never tried the Impossible meat before, she recommended that we try the vegan empanadas. We took them home frozen, and she gave us a piece of paper with the cooking instructions printed on it. Crispy shell, gluten-free, and so recommended.
