Exterior looked old and run down in a non-appealing building on Washington. The entrance is actually in the back with a parking lot on the side. There is a patio bar that is enclosed with a roof and several old school heaters. The interior is nicely decorated and actually very minimal chic - very speakeasy, prohibition-like feel. The drinks are handmade shaken and stirred cocktails that run for about $12 a piece. I would say I love the mixology concept but it's not a place you would go if you wanted lots of drinks cause it will get expensive very very fast. I can't say I was impressed with my moscow mule - I mean they were good but nothing more than another mixology bar. The bartenders weren't in a hurry to serve you or even look at you. We came on a Sunday and there were a bunch of people dressed in khakis and dresses, like they just got done celebrating Easter. And it was pretty loud inside, so it was difficult to hold conversations. The prices of the appetizers and bites were pretty high if you ask me.. the cheese board was $45. I don't think anyone has ever actually ordered it cause there weren't any pictures of it on yelp (I looked). They say it comes with 4 cheeses, prosciutto, almonds, jam, etc. But overall, just a pricey place with ok ambiance and good drinks but nothing special about it. read more

I wish this place was larger. Seating inside is hard to come by on some nights. I tried their mint julep when they first opened and came back over a year later and tried the ambiguous smile, which was also excellent. Oysters are a must order. I have yet to try the food but the cocktails are on point. Hand crafted by professional bartenders. Honestly, close your eyes and pick any cocktail - you won't be disappointed. I'm just a basic whiskey gal and I always judge a place by their old fashioneds, and guess what? THEY MAKE THE BEST OLD FASHIONEDS!! I like coming here for a date night because it's so dim and romantic inside. It's also very very small and quiet so I don't recommend going with a large group. read more

First off, I love their cocktails, they truly are wonderful and I am never let down by them. They are creative, thoughtful and well made cocktails without a doubt. The three times ive been there unfortunately the service has been less than optimal. While the waiters have always been very amicable, their simply hasnt been enough bartenders/bar backs to serve the customers present. I understand not wanting to over staff your bar, but the three times ive been there, there has been 40 people or so with 1 waiter and 2 bartenders doing everything. On average id say the first drink has taken, 20 minutes or so to get which is just far too long. This isnt to say i havent had a great time at julep, i love the cocktails, the vibe, and the atmosphere, i just cant help but think Id absolutely love this bar if it had more service available. read more

Julep, I want so badly to give you the 5th star and if you take my one word of advice it could be yours........turn your music down. First let me say, julep is adorbs! The decor is so full of sweet southern charm it'll make your teeth hurt. The bartenders are dressed in their uniform of gingham shirts. They have the coolest pulley fan system ever. The bar shelves give an old library feel. Just everything is perfect. Secondly, the cocktails are well described in their menu. I love this! I don't know what all the drinks are just by name alone and Julep has done a great job of explaining each specialty drink. Their cocktails are expertly handcrafted and delicious! I highly recommend the cherry bounce sour, YUM! The prices I felt were totally in line for the drink that was crafted for me. All of these above wonderful things being said, Julep is a cocktail lounge. I go to cocktail lounges to have a drink and hang out with friends. I don't go to cocktail lounges to yell at my friends over music. The music volume totally detracted from our evening. The HH is awesome and very inexpensive; a select menu of cocktails for half off until 6:30 pm. DRINKS: Hurricane - A little too fruity for my taste with an overload of ice, this would be perfect for a fruity-drink lover on a hot, summer day. Mint Julep - My kind of cocktail! I think I found another one of my go-to drinks. A perfect mixture of Bourbon, sugar/syrup, & mint. Do not get this if you can't handle your liquor! My companion ordered an Old Fashioned & an Old Pepper, and he seemed to enjoy both. If you have a thing for spicy drinks and Worcestershire sauce, give the Old Pepper a try. Maybe you'll like it more than I did! Service: Server was very nice but it was slow, hence the four stars. Overall, I absolutely loved it here. I really liked the southern concept and the establishment was just top notch. It wasn't really poppin on a Tueday night but I assume the weekends fare better. My beverage of choice was Sparkling Julep. I love champagne and if I see it in a drink I will definitely order it. The Sparkling Julep was so good I had to have it twice. DOS VECES! They have fresh oysters for $3 and some of their shared appetizers are very very delicious for bar food. Can I really say anything bad about Alba Huerta? I absolutely adore this place and I'm pretty sure I don't need to validate Julep. I love the drinks here and the service. The waiters/waitresses here are really personable. If you aren't sure what to drink, ask them. They offer great reccommendations. Julep recently updated their food menu and it's pretty decent. I wouldn't say it's the best thing in the world, but it will hold you off until you go to your preferred location to eat. I would recommend the potato and hush puppies also the different oysters from different states. The deviled eggs are pretty flat, no bells and whistles to keep me keen. Parking is hit or miss and it is dependent on how many people is in the bar. I usually prefer to go odd days such as weekday evenings (DO NOT COME THURSDAYS) so you can actually have a seat and hangout with your friends. read more

So much to say about this beautiful spot. Inside is magnificent with the arched copper bar, big comfy booths, smaller tables squeezed in here and there. A small space, but somehow seems roomy and open. The design could not be better, which has that perfect old world charm without being stuck in the past. I am greeted right away as I grab a seat at the bar. Already knowing that I need to try the Mint Julep, and within minutes I am sipping one of the best cocktails in Houston. Incredible, and so moreish. Oh yeah, don't forget a bad ass take on a Sazerac. Made with Marie Duffau Brandy, and Rye. Which is a really unique spin, and another near perfect cocktail. Can you tell that I like bourbon based cocktails? Not to mention the most bottles of Pap Van Winkle (from 15 to 23 years) that I have seen anywhere. Reserve 101 (and I am loathed to even mention that sorry excuse for a bar) might have a bigger overall selection of the brown liquor, but this is what a good bourbon bar should be. A much smaller selection relatively, but still plenty big all quality, and something for anybodies price. Of coarse, if you come latter at night the place will be packed. Though on my early afternoon visit the service was as quick, knowledgeable, and personable as any bar I have been to. There are a few small plates. The Hush Puppies and Oysters are great. They also have a seafood tower that is this massive dish of fresh, raw seafood. After running into a group of friends, we had to try this. Gigantimos (yeah I made that word up) whole prawns, scallops, clams, oysters, and lobster. Incredibly fresh, incredibly indulgent, and one of the coolest dishes in Houston right now. Maybe one of the only places in town that has real quality and flavorful lobster. At $120, and with such massive amounts of food, this is something to share with a group of about 4 people. I was beyond impressed with this. Instantly one of the best bars in Houston. Everything from decor, drinks, the incredibly fresh raw seafood, and service is spot on. I don't know how the Clumsy Butcher group keeps making these amazing destination bars, but be glad they do. The Houston bar scene would be really boring without them. read more

This place is awesome! The ambiance and decor gives this place so much character. I have been twice now and will make this spot one of my go to places! Although it is located on Washington you do not have the same young, obnoxious, drunk crowd. It is more of a chill spot, great for a date, girls night or if you just want to grab a cocktail! The spirits collection has something for everyone! The creative cocktail menu can be a little over whelming at first but our waiter was awesome and gave great recommendations. Good cocktail selection. But the drinks are a bit pricey, and it does take about a good 10 minutes to get the drinks bc there specially made. (And that's when they aren't busy. I went once in a Friday and it was a madhouse! And took about 20 minutes to get 1 drink.) We went when we were hungry, but they're food menu isn't too great. And the only thing that sounded good for splitting purposes was the cheese plate but it was $30, so we decided to pass and go eat somewhere else. Parking is a mess. A small, narrow lot with not a lot of spaces. I found out after the fact, though, that there is another lot directly behind the bar. It is a cute little place, but doesn't offer much in the way of indoor seating either. Not a bad spot, but not my go-to first choice either. To my understanding, it's owned by the same people who own Anvil. Or there is some sort of relationship between the two. Anvil would be my choice over Julep. I really enjoy bourbon, so I was excited to try Julep. They have a pretty extensive cocktail menu - lots of bourbon drinks and a fair amount of other types, including lots of gin drinks. I chose the spiced julep - it was good, but a little too sweet and I didn't love how it was served. I get that it may be the traditional way, but there was so much ice! I've had juleps before that were not quite so chock full of ice. Still, it was good. I'd like to go back and try more type of juleps, but it's a bit pricey. Need to go back during happy hour, when they're half off! The atmosphere is so cute and cozy! Beautiful date spot. However I went on a Tuesday night and it was pretty crowded (it was Thanksgiving week), but that leads me to believe that a Thursday/Friday/Saturday night would be insanely crowded and therefore a huge headache. If you're that bent on being seen at a cool new place on the weekend, I guess it might be worth it. Otherwise, I think if I go on a weekend, I will go as early as possible, like at 4. I got to experience this place once and I must say the sparkling julep is both attractive and delicious. Actually all the drinks look amazing, but I just don't enjoy bitters. I got to taste my friend's Creole Crusta, which had a little kick to it, but I wouldn't mind ordering it myself next time. That sparkling julep though, I still dream of you. FYI the bar has a white store-front on Washington, parking is on the side & back, entrance is in the back, as well. They have a pretty nice outdoor section, but when we arrived it was early enough to find a booth inside. It's a bar so food options are sparse & you seat yourself. It's not that big so it could get a little crowded on a Friday night and it does get loud. Be mindful of that if you're trying to have girl talk! Or any conversation. read more

The Happy Hour menu (3-6p) offers 6 drinks and 4 appetizers for $6 each. It's a deal for their famed Mint Julep (usually $10) or tasty Milk Punch (not even on the regular menu). Service at the bar was phenomenal on all fronts. The bartender was on-pointe and timely with requests, tips, and deliveries. She took extra orders just before HH ended to make sure we'd lock in the deal. The decor was snazzy. The central focus of the interior is the bar -- a testament to their devotion to quality drinks. Parking can be difficult as the lot is small and awkward, but there is an extended lot in the back and street parking is not impossible. Great bar overall. Good drinks. Good service. Let me start by saying it is very hard to find. Absolutely no signage to be seen from Washington- we passed it 2 times before finding it. Also their door is off to the side and hidden. Decor is beautiful. Lots of grey and white. Not a lot of seating, but people leave and come often so you don't have to wait very long. There is booth seating and also bar seating. We sat at the bar. I came here for the first time with a friend for happy hour. We tried the Sparkling Julep- it was beautiful but a bit too sweet. We also tried the Cobbler, tasty but a lot of ice and not a lot of drink. We finally asked the waiter to make us a drink, not on the menu, called the Southside. That was our favorite drink. It was gin based with mint and lime juice. I need to explore the drink menu a but more... I don't love a sweet drink and all the ones we had were on the sweet side. Julep is one of the coolest bars I've visited in Houston. The interior is gorgeous, and the bartender uniforms are so cute!! The crowd is a little older than that of Anvil, so it feels a bit more sophisticated. You must order the cherry bounce sour. Monique P. says that they are switching it out soon. Nooooo! Please keep this on the menu!! Apparently the mint juleps are amazing, but I'm a pansy when it comes to hard liquor, and I definitely can't get past the whiskey in that drink.
