A much-needed splurge! Once or twice a week I splurge on smoothies from Juice Appeal - either the Green Buzz (without ginger) or Coco Butter (with almond milk instead of dairy milk). The juice and smoothie options are much healthier than Jamba Juice based on ingredient availability. I've never seen so many kale drinks in my life. They had 4 categories of flavors: berry delights, citrus cravings, tropical paradise, and special selections. I am a fan of Pina Colada's minus the alcohol, so that is the reason for the island hop which contained pineapple, coconut, honey, bananas, and strawberries. Much to my dismay, it tasted nothing like pineapple OR coconut. POOR ME!!!! thats all I wanted, some tropical lovin, some of that smooth island coconut flavor. =\ It literally tasted just like a strawberry and banana smoothie and a bit citrusy for me, but if thats your thang then whatever floats your boat. It did have nice little chunk surprises of strawberries and bananas in it too. Taste wise I will have to give it to the juice bar collective. While the smoothie was delicious, it was only available in a large size, and it definitely left a small hole in my wallet. I ordered a health smoothie - with soy instead of dairy for the sake of my lab mates - and it was great! They modified my order with no problem (but they did charge extra which I think is stupid). There were no chunks of un-blended frozen fruit or anything disgusting like that... The selection makes mouth happy, the space is cute, the girl who helped us was friendly, and my friend seemed really happy with her carrot juice. A bit too much, if you ask me...because I feel like I am there nearly every freaking day..... but all of the juices and smoothies are tasty, fresh, and unfailingly hit the spot, so I just can't resist!! This place is conveniently located right next to the Bart station in downtown Berkeley and close to campus. It's a tiny place on a street corner, but it's nice to stop by and grab a fruit smoothie on a hot day. I ordered the Fruit Fantasy, which has orange and pineapple juice in it. It isn't an actual smoothie (no dairy stuff mixed into it) which I like because then the fruit flavor is stronger and tastes more refreshing. I was glad that it wasn't overly sweet like a lot of other smoothies. It was yummy, a good portion, and cheaper than Jamba juice for a good quality drink. I think the smaller size also comes with 1 free boost, and the bigger size comes with 2 free boosts which is a nice perk. I will probably be coming back here sometime in the summer! read more

I came across Juice Appeal, which reminds me very much of Jamba Juice with their selection of smoothies, wheatgrass machine, and assortment of snacks (which includes my fav., Pirate's Booty). Walked into Juice Appeal after returning from the Kaiser Center Rooftop Concert this afternoon. It was warm and I was craving a smoothie. We walked in and the two girls working the counter chirped: "It's Friday!" Well, no shit, Sherlock. Then they looked at Adam, who was wearing his "Nerd" shirt: "Are you a nerd?" one of them asked. Way less original than the cute gay man who tried to pick him up at the Kaiser Center by complimenting the shirt. (Adam doesn't think he was being hit on: "He liked my shirt!" he says. And that could even be true.) They were too annoying for us to do anything but leave. Two stars for the fact that I have been to other Juice Appeals, and they are good. "What am I doing here?" This spotty cat asks himself as he finds himself wandering the streets of downtown Berkeley upon visiting a store to pick up some things. Having lots of time, and not wanting to go back into SF just yet, I decided to let my paws wander about the busy streets and see what sort of things were about. Feeling a bit thirsty, I found myself passing by Juice Appeal a few times, looking curiously at it, but not committing myself to going inside. After what must have been a third pass that my route took me through, I decided to go in and check it out. I looked over their menu and was pleasantly surprised by the sort of choices they have here. Not just your average everyday smoothie and drink type place. there were some very VERY unique things here. Since I was feeling a bit tired and needed something to wake me up a bit, I opted for the cappuccino cooler. Now i've had numerous drinks of this kind before, and I gotta say, this was really really the best I've had. Why? It didn't feel artificial. I have experienced artificial tasting coffee type smoothies in the past one too many times, but this truly felt like it was made with real ingredients, and wasn't overloaded with tons of sugar. I felt totally good after drinking it down, and didn't feel like I was getting some crazy sugar high. Service there was quick and nice, felt quite comfortable. I've visited this place quite a few times, since their smoothies are cheap ($3.50) and are good for a quick pick-me-up. However, they were always around the 3-stars range -- nothing special, and it didn't help that the guy who's usually here isn't the friendliest juice-maker around. However, I recently tried their Berry Blend smoothie -- cranberry juice, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberry sherbet -- and it was much better than the others I've tried. That alone bumped it up to four stars for me. They've started a frequent buyers card program where you get one free smoothie after buying ten of them. The menu is a little overwhelming but you can tell quickly that they have much more than any Jamba Juice can offer, even though practically all JJ's in Berkeley have closed. They have more exotic add-ins like goji extract, machta powder and other natural supplements and antioxidant-rich fruits. If you don't specify, your smoothie will be made as a 24oz and they will not offer you the two boosts you should get free (I didn't read the fine print at the bottom of the chalkboard quick). It was clear that my friend and I hadn't been here in a while as we took five minutes to decide what to order, you'd think the cashier would suggest that we get two free boosts (and we ordered three smoothies). The smoothies are well blended (there was only one big icy chunk of mango in the bottom), and service is quick with usually no line, but unfortunately they accept cash only, though there's a BofA, Wells Fargo and Chase right across the street. Nope, no cards accepted. Didn't have cash. So the owner held my smoothie hostage as I ran across the street and panhandled my co-worker for four bucks. He was surprised that I returned but said "you do have an honest face." Huh, wha? "Well aren't you sweet, sir. And you make a damn fine smoothie." Try to beet, ginger, apple, carrot juice. Stars are for service, convenient location for students, and smoothie fix. I love their "purple cow" smoothie which contains acai, banana, peanut butter, and granola on top. Their green smoothies are really good as well. I love the fact that you can add tons of different kicks to your drink, such as whey protein, vitamin c, etc. I have yet to try their juices. However, I recently ordered their acai bowl and I was disappointed. Frozen acai with almond milk, topped with frozen berries, granola, and a ton of honey. I'm not a fan of frozen berries in my acai bowl- I was expecting fresh fruit. They were still covered in ice, so it would be nice if they could rinse the berries first. I know some people enjoy frozen fruit though - maybe it's just preference. Everything here can definitely be made at home with my own blender. However, if you're on-the-go and rushing to your next class, this is the perfect pit stop to shove some calories in. read more

This used to be my favorite juice spot in Berkeley. I went to Berkeley High and have been coming here since freshman year (graduated 06). I used to like this spot a lot but service has never been as good as it used to be back in the day. But that never stopped me before, I didn't care....until earlier today. My little sister is now a freshman at bhs and I raved to her about how I like this spot. I took her here earlier today and told her that every day I get to pick her up after school, I'll take her here as a treat for both of us (I live in Berkeley and work on university). There's this chubby African American girl who made my drink wrong. I've been getting cherry zinger forever and even when they didn't have cherries earlier this year, I still came here and experienced other drinks. When I asked to correct it, a short skinny Asian guy made me the new drink, when he was done he purposely slammed it on the counter splashing the juice on my shirt. He didn't even apologize to me. I noticed other ppl comment how that was unnecessary and walk out of there bc of what they witnessed. He was very rude and unprofessional, not to mention immature and inappropriate. I hate how someone's bad day left a terrible impression on this location. I wish customer service was as good as it used to be. I'LL FOR NOW ONLY GO TO THE JUICE SPOT NEXT TO 24 INSTEAD OF THIS SPOT, you guys just lost your 10+ years customer thanks to the skinny boy. Walked in here the other day with a friend and was totally overwhelmed by the options. After finally deciding on the kombucha drinks we were informed that they were out of kombucha... then that they were out of coffee....and then we noticed it was cash only and left xP My boyfriend and I were in Berkeley today and I had my heart set on their kombucha juices so we went. Walking closer I notice that it says "Juice Appeal", not "Raw Energy"... I dont know why I assumed it was raw energy but I decided to try it anyways. I got the "High 5 Spinach" which had spinach, ginger kombucha, peaches and strawberries. My boyfriend got the "Surfin Kale" which had kale, blueberries, peaches and ginger kombucha". We were expecting the texture to be closer to that of kombucha you'd buy in the store (tea with juice and purée)... but it was SUPER thick more so than normal smoothies. I think my face was signifying my confusion because the girl who made it was like "I don't know why it's so thick!" and laughed haha. Not her fault... I will say this shit was FOUL. Both mine and my boyfriends. I know kombucha is supposed to be a little strong but this tasted like it was expired! We took two maybe three sips and left them on top of a trash can in case someone else would want it.... Another note; When I came back my second time which was about two days later they had the coffee & kombucha but were out of about 10 different fruits and concentrates (I guess this place isn't that fresh)... seems like the manager is having a hard time keeping up with inventory. The location isn't huge, but I know that a juice or a smoothie isn't necessarily something I need to sit down and consume right there and then. This place definitely has better prices than other juice/smoothie shops, and way lower prices than other shops in the area that specialize in something else but still sell smoothies. And they do indeed have a frequent buyer card if you ask for it! The flavors are pretty good.
