After seeing other Yelpers pictures of acai bowls from Juice Appeal, I decided to come try it for myself. Being spoiled by the acai bowl from Cafe Brasil in Santa Cruz, I wasn't sure what to expect. The acai bowl ($9.50) comes with your choice of almond milk, soy milk, or apple juice blended with acai and bananas as the acai base. It is then topped with granola, frozen raspberries bits and blueberries, coconut shavings and honey drizzled on top. The bowl was very colorful and the gentleman next to me asked me what I'd ordered because it "looks pretty". The consistency of the acai wasn't too bad; a little watery but not as bad as other places I've tried. Other Yelpers commented on the frozen fruit which held true with my bowl but wasn't that frozen to the point where I couldn't easily eat it. The downsides of juice appeal, is that if there are at least two people ahead of you, you'll have to wait about 10 minutes or so for your smoothie or bowl. If you aren't in a hurry, I think it's worth trying out. I'll probably go back if I'm in need of an acai fix or smoothie since it's so close by. read more

The worker was super friendly so I must have gotten a different worker than other yelpers because it seems like bad service is a recurring problem for this place! My boyfriend decided on the Tropical Fantasy and I chose the Mango Madness. He went to wait in the car while I ordered. To my surprise, this place only takes cash...CRAZY for 2020. Ran out to him because I didn't have enough $ for both smoothies but sadly he had no cash on him either. We were only a little short..like 1 quarter... but the lady wouldn't let it slide (which is understandable I guess) so we ended up sharing 1 Large Mango Madness for about $7. Pretty steep for a smoothie but I guess that's what smoothies go for these days. The worker is really on a slow program when she's back there because everything is completely fresh and made to order! I saw her back there pulling grass for someone's green juice and just knew I was going to be waiting around for my drink for ages. When I finally got mine I loved the smoothie taste! I've gone here a few times . The smoothies are good, and the staff is friendly. Today I did notice that the mandatory compost fee was raised from $ .25 to $1.25 when ordering online. On my way out after picking up my drink, I made sure to clarify that that did mean that the cup I got my smoothie in "is compostable, correct?" I was told that it was, and I do believe the staff member might have believed that. Anyway looking up the cup and lid when I got home it looks like they're standard recyclable plastic (Karat C-KC24U specifically). Hmm. So my gf has been talking about this juice joint in B-town that makes pure juice out of fruits. I was really excited to try it out. Apparently the first time I came here, we ordered the wrong thing....Smoothie. LOL it was pretty good but I mean, Jamba carries the same thing :/ So today I come in and we order JUICE but we messed up again. Sure we had juice, but the artificial type from the stores except that this place carries different flavors. I had the boysenberry juice which was sweet and not too sour. It was on the rocks which was delish but nothing toooo special. Im not satisfied until I actually have homemade squeezed juice. It's my personal favorite spot to come to in Berkeley for smoothies. I appreciate that they use natural ingredients to make their smoothies and that without the sherbets that Jamba Juice uses to sweeten their smoothies, this place provides you with a healthy option to start your morning at a more affordable price. Juice apparel has a large variety of smoothie combinations. If you prefer a slightly different version of the smoothie they offer, you can substitute the fruits, juices, and vegetables. In addition to the smoothies, this place also offers freshly squeezed juices and wheatgrass shots. Last are the logistics. This place sits in the intersection of center and shattuck, where parking is difficult to find. Seating is a bit crowded and uncomfortable so this is not the place to drink and work; it's more structured for the grab-and-go crowd. Additionally, and more importantly, this place is CASH ONLY. If you forgot to bring cash, the place literally sits in between Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo. Citibank is on University Ave, so for the all natural fruit smoothies and to save a couple of dollars on a smoothie, I would recommend running to your nearest bank to grab a $5. I am a fan of this spot. This place may be small but it's mighty. It packs a powerful punch! In the middle of everything that is going on at Shattuck, you will find this spot, occasionally with a line through the door. Students, professionals, and fitness fanatics from the nearby gyms flock to this location for a healthy boost to their system. I'm a bit of an acai bowl connoisseur. I can't help it... they're delicious and good for you (compared to a lot of stuff I eat). We ordered the pitaya bowl here. And while I loved the flavor of everything in the bowl, the base itself was really soupy and not as icy. For my husband, soupy acai bowls are a pet peeve. For me, because I loved the flavor so much, it didn't get to me. I do think they need to make their bowls less soupy. Maybe add less almond milk? Still a good experience over all. Okay and the entire cup has a thin layer of FROZEN fruit toppings and sprinkles of granola. And like 4 coconut flakes. They skimp out SO much on the fruit; it has less toppings than my typical froyo cup. Worse of all, it is ridiculously sweet. they dump honey on it so that every bite sticks to your teeth. The frozen fruit makes the entire bowl nasty because it's not fresh, it's hard to chew, the frozen ice bits hurt your teeth,and the sweetness is overwhelming. The whole top layer was still covered with ice. Frozen Acai + a pool of honey = unhealthy added sugars aka diabetes in a bowl. Do yourself a favor and go to Jamba Juice. My usual spot for green smoothies and juices was unexpectedly closed. I found JA on Yelp and was sorely disappointed. No green smoothies and barely any veggie juices. A blue haired dude walks in and impatiently stands an arms length to the left of me and starts uttering noises. Shortly the same cashier emerges from the abyss. And helps the DUDE. WTF. So rude. I asked if the juices were fresh, she said only the carrot was, the others were from concentrate. I request for ALL carrot and add another boost. She never asks me what size of drink I want. To be honest, all the yelp pictures looked very promising and when I ordered the regular acai bowl with apple juice (they also have almond & soy milk options), its appearance made it seem delicious! But don't be fooled - because it was quite the disappointment, as it was very underwhelming & failed to live up to its appearance. Pros: - one of the few acai bowl places in berkeley - fast service - got my order in less than ~3 mins - friendly staff Cons: - thought it was quite expensive (esp. relative to other alternatives like froyo or smoothie options; jamba juice has cheaper acai bowls) - cash only - which is always such a pain - frozen instead of fresh fruits - too artificially sweet Although I was able to satisfy my craving, I would probably not go back again for their acai bowls. I haven't been in in a few months and I always substitute the mango for banana. I approached the counter to order my drink. I began to order and got a little confused. I could not recall what I normally substituted the mango for. The young lady behind the counter was clearly irritated by my confusion. I then recalled it was banana. Mind you no other customers were in the juice bar. I also always add activated charcoal to my drink. I noticed the price seemed a little higher and when I asked for the breakdown of the price and the young lady because even more frustrated with me and began using hand motions. I explained to her I'm the customer and I have right to ask about the price. She then realized she charged me for the banana instead of substituting it for the mango which I have never been charged. I then paid and looked for my customer rewards card to be stamps she continued with her rude unprofessional behavior. I then told her she did not have to be so rude. She then went on a complete tirade I then asked her her name and informed her I would be repairing her to the owner. She told me her name was Ria. She continued to argue with me. I said to her you cannot just let it go please just name my drink so I can leave. She then said to me "Girl don't talk to me like that" I was totally shocked by this. I immediately called her out. I told her I'm a 50 year old black woman and I do not appreciate you calling me a "girl" I felt that was a micro aggression and compare it to someone calling a Black Man a Boy. She then responded "Oh so now you are going to make this about racism" I again told her to make my drink so I could leave. I then received a call and began to walk out the door the person I was on the line with asked me where I was at due to the extremely loud music in the background I said to the person I'm a a juice bar and they are playing extremely loud music. Rai then said "Oh now your complaining about the music" I then walked back in and again told he to mind her business and to make my drink she interjected herself into my phone conversation. Again no other customers were in the juice bar and she was playing extremely loud vulgar rap music. A a 50 year old disabled black woman I should not have to be subject to music with the N-Word, B-Word, H-Word etc. I have patronized this establishment for many many years. I have always had a pleasant experience with the staff. I have never come access this young lady. She was a young Asian woman and I felt she was being racist and bias towards me. I felt as though since she saw that I was black she could speak to me and treat me in a disrespectful manner and she didn't expect me to call her out on her bias behavior. I will take my money elsewhere from now on. I will no longer support any business that allows staff to treat the public with such disrespect. Juice Appeal is one of those places that you'd never visit if you weren't a regular already. The only reason I went in was because I'm currently on a health streak and was desperately searching for orange juice (the other option was Pho or curly fries... oh, downtown Berkeley). The cashier was friendly, and there were lots of smoothie options on the menu. My large orange juice (comparable to Jamba Juice's original/medium in size) cost about $6, which is pretty standard for fresh squeezed OJ (aka expensive). I noticed the guy who paid before me ordered something thick and green that was served in a shot glass. They gave him a slice of orange for chase... how interesting. I'm going to ask them what that is the next time I go in. So overall, my experience was nothing special but that might just be because I ordered an ordinary drink! There's no sitting space inside, but they do have two tables outside if you really want to sit down. You're going to be right in front of the busy downtown Berkeley traffic, so I don't think it's all that healthy to be breathing in all that dust and exhaust. I stopped by Juice Appeal for a morning drink. I saw that it opens at 8:00AM. I got there at 7:58AM, and saw one of the employees setting up outside the store. He immediately turned to me and said, "We are not open yet!" I told him, "I know, I don't mind waiting." It was kind of odd that he just assumed I won't wait two minutes until opening. He does not seem to be a morning person. The smoothies are pretty simple -- basic variations of orange juice, pineapple juice, bananas, and berries -- nothing I could not make at home with my own blender, but costing about $5 per cup. 1 star off: Juice Appeal has no special appeal about their juices. 1 star off: Customers do not seem appealing to them either. read more

The location (across from the BART) is meant only to grab and go which is going to be a pain once it gets warmer. I got the Energizer and was surprised at how delicious it was. I was so surprised that I came back and left a tip. There is a little wait because each order is individually blended on the spot. At the time, there were only 2 people working (one blending and the other at register) with 4 people ahead of me. I spent less than $5 on a 24 oz smoothie. That alone is worth coming back. The blend is made fresh to order and it has the perfect amount of sweetness from the drizzled honey and coconut on top. The only downside is the fruit on top is frozen. I've come here a few times now and noticed they can be inconsistent with the portion size. Sometimes the blend is thicker and other times is a lot soupier.
