In my opinion, this is a tough place to rate. The location is great and lots of good seating available, both indoors and outdoors. Espresso was a little too watery for my liking. The girl who helped me was efficient although she lacks in the customer service area. The crêpes here are awesome and the guy who prepares them makes up in kindness and approachability. This was my Friday stop for mom group, and although navigating the narrow stairs to the upper deck with a stroller (make sure you have a mom buddy!) was tricky, the atmosphere is cool enough that I didn't seem to mind. The menu is quite extensive considering its just a cafe - but I ordered a loose Kyoto rose tea and a chicken ceasar wrap. Not only did they bring it to me - since I had my hands full with the kid - they offered me more water for my tea and were super accommodating, not to mention the wrap was amazing! Next time I'm coming back for the crepes. But maybe I'll bring the carrier. Even THINKING of doing that again with the stroller makes me sigh deep in the belly. read more

I'm not so sure I should be reviewing Juice & Java, as it doesn't need to get any more popular than it already is. I'm currently sharing a table with a stranger, just because there were no available seats. But, I am eating a rather delicious crepe, so I figured I should spread the love a little bit. Juice & Java is a lovely cafe in the Beaches if you're looking for somewhere to eat some good food, drink some good tea AND get some work done. Wifi's free and reliable here, and it's never too noisy so you should be able to focus alright. I'm sure it'd be a great place for brunch with friends or a coffee/tea date, as well. Food options include a variety of crepes and sandwiches - I definitely recommend the brie, apple, bacon & applesauce crepe that I'm gobbling up right now. They also have a good variety of loose leaf tea, which always wins points from me. I hate coffee, so I can't speak to that...although, I should note that the stranger I was sitting with just left, and she barely touched her coffee which is still sitting here 3/4 full. I agree with Christopher that this is a tough place to rate, and with Wayne in regard to supporting local businesses. Many times I have seen the owner pop out in the morning to pick up fruit or other ingredients from local stores (in my opinion justifies a little higher price, although I don't feel the prices are high). Comfortable surroundings with wifi and local patrons sitting typing away or meeting with friends or colleagues. The food and beverages are solid with a number of options. What makes this place difficult to rate is the service - I keep getting the sense that I am a burden when ordering. No smiles, sometimes even a sigh... and the orders are straight from the posted menu without substitution or special request. I even brought a friend in with me and she was taken by the attitude as well. I would like to keep returning as it is convenient and good, but I'm now fond of the whole "not feeling welcome aspect". The winter is a tough time for everyone, the last thing you need to do is make it tougher on customers. I sincerely hope the attitude changes. read more

I try to support independent coffee houses whenever possible because I like supporting social and economic diversity and people with the courage to go off on their own. This one makes it easy. Lots of freshly-made and relatively nutritious light meals. The starstruck joint almost kitty corner to here has stale plastic wrapped sandwiches and sweet nothings, delivered the night before by a long Gordon Food Services truck -- neither the food not the processing jobs go to the neighborhood that supports the store. By contrast, Juice and Java gives back to the neighborhood in many ways. Local art on the walls. Food ingredients mostly bought from the family-run grocery a block away. Staff who stay a long time and get to know people by name. A shelf of books anyone can take from. As I argue in Food for City Building, government should support local businesses that go out of their way to support the neighborhood in the same way that governments support the film industry to shop locally for labor and services. Great space. It was relatively quiet (I was there on a weekday afternoon), very spacious with lots of seating options (tables, comfy chair, benches), well decorated, and in a good location. This place has so many options: sandwiches, soups, crepes (both savory and sweet), smoothie. Where to begin? Since I was looking for a late lunch/afternoon snack, I opted for the Veggie Crepe, which is a savor crepe with sundried tomato hummus, lettuce, red peppers, cucumbers. Unlike some of the other reviews, I found the service to be great. The ladies behind the counter were really nice and they answered my questions about the food. My food was then served to me very quickly after ordering. Granted, it seemed like a slow afternoon so maybe it's different when it's busy. The food was tasty. It wasn't anything spectacular but the hummus was good and the veggies were fresh. My only critique of the crepe would be that it was served with what appeared to be a ranch dressing on the sides as well as on the crepe itself. I'm not particular found of whatever the sauce was and would have preferred it wasn't on the crepe at all. I would have asked for my crepe to be served without it had I had known there was going to be sauce on it. The hummus adds a decent amount of flavour to the veggies so an additional sauce is not necessary. The crepe was about $7, so it was decently priced for lunch. The food was good and fresh and the atmosphere was great. I'll definitely return in the future. It's nice to have an independent café in a sea of Timmy's and Starbucks. I'm rating it 3 stars only because it was decent but nothing really outstanding. I look forward to trying more items here. read more

I wanted to love this place, I really did! The good: The food and drinks were amazing, and a great value. I had a BLT on rye, and added an egg. They didnt skimp on the bacon, and the bread was great. My boyfriend and friends all got crepes. I tried a bite of the 'cordon blue'-it was so savoury! Their freshly squeezed lemonade is light (not too sour), and they have a huge selection of flavoured coffee. Great atmosphere is great, and the patio is cute. The bad: The service! This has more to do with a staffing problem then with the people who served us. They were wonderful-we were a party of 4 but payed separately and they still brought all our food out together. They also appologized about the wait. But, it took about 15 mins to just order at the counter and another 20 ontop of that for the food. 2 people working at 11 on a Sunday morning doesn't seem right. So, I had to bump this rating down to a 3 (would have been a 4). read more

I liked the crepe and soup. The vege crepe was nice. The vege pasta soup of the day was good (but I don't think it was homemade - maybe a good brand of can). I liked the chai tea the first day I came. It's made with the powder stuff (which I like) and it came out tasty, hot, and frothy. I didn't like the chai tea the second time because it was luke warm and there was a chunk of powder that wasn't mixed properly that I drank. With the seating outside during the summer and cozy cafe-style seating upstairs, I can see myself here for a couple of hours. Just moved into the neighbourhood this week and decided to go for a stroll. I wanted something that wasn't Starbucks and found this gem. I walked into this cute cafe which had a great menu and friendly staff. There were many options to choose from including salads, sandwiches and crepes. I ordered a Apple and Brie crepe and a Chia smoothie. I walked up to their second level where they had an array of tables and chairs, couches and even a library. Could this place get anymore adorable?!? My crepe and smoothie came and looked delicious. The crepe was a bit blended which was surprising because it had bacon, brie and apples in it topped with apple sauce, I wouldn't order it again. My smoothie however was yummy. I really liked this place on my first visit so I returned with friends. We had a good experience that time too! We sat out on the patio and had a nice meal and chilled out. One of the staff members came out and greeted us and was very nice. I have returned and have found the service to be inconsistent. It was very uncomfortable to be there one day when one of the regular staff members (an owner?) was not very happy with a new employee. She was speaking in a condescending manner to her. I saw the poor employee taking a break later and look very berated. Needless to say, this spoiled my visit as it did not make a good contribution to the atmosphere. The prices are not cheap so the entire experience is really important. I hope they read the reviews because I want this place to succeed. They have a lovely loft area with books to read. I really want to like it but .... I am on the fence. Please be nice to your staff and they in turn will be wonderful to your customers. read more

Although the coffee and environment at Juice and Java deserves a four, in my opinion, I can't get past the faux "customer service" of many J&J employees. Today, for the *third* time, an employee filled the Americano I requested to the brim (first: who does that?! If I wanted a regular coffee, I'd ask for one). For the third time, said coffee spills all over my hand, burning me (while on the 2ft transfer from counter to the sugar/milk station). AND - for the third time, although I brought this situation to the employees attention immediately, no apology was made - no offer to make me a new coffee or provide me with a dry, clean cup. He even watched me clean up the spilled coffee - no apology, no "let me do that"... I had to ask for a larger cup, so I could actually put milk in, and I get a glare...like I'm putting him out. I'm furious. I like coming to Juice and Java as it's a convenient location, with good coffee (provided you can get it to your table), comfortable seats, lots of tables, and wifi. I can't get past the staff though...some are very friendly, and really seem to care for the customer. Other's I find ooze that "I'm being friendly to you because I have to". Yes, it's the Beach - some ... "behaviour" is to be expected being the area that it is, but those in a customer service position should know better. I'm undecided if I'll be coming back - I generally try to avoid the kind of people that could care less about someone being burned by their lack of attention. read more

I wish I could use less than 1 star. Ordered the mango berry smoothie for my son and I and it actually tastes bitter. Not ripe fruit? Imagine they are using frozen fruit so this is strange. When we placed our order my husband said he wanted something cold. The proprietor/server suggested an iced mocha. So he ordered that. When it arrived it was a hot mocha. When we explained we ordered the ice, she argued with us and said we didn't until we quoted the conversation verbatim and she finally conceded that we were right (guess here, customer is never right?!?). Our cinnamon sugar crepe was so heavy on the cinnamon that it was gritty. Also dead bugs on the windowsill as we ate, did not help our experience. We do not recommend. read more

Awful experience today! I know so many people who go here in my neighborhood in the beach and some warned me about the rude service, but I went anyway just to try it out. I now see what my friends were are about. Rude obnoxious man taking the orders at the counter, I asked simple questions which were answered abruptly and in a court manner. When I tried to speak to the owner about the rude service she responded with "no one else has a problem with him". Are you serious?! Typical scenario where the owner condones inappropriate behavior. And yes - there ARE others who find the service rude!!! She obvious sly doesn't care about the care provided to customers Don't bother going there for over expensive basic items & rude staff. This place is a newly renovated Second Cup and man am I glad to see this smoothie joint in it's place. But that's a different story. Juice & Java has a variety of different juices/smoothies/teas and coffees. They have sandwiches (which you can alter according to your likes/dislikes), salads and CREPES. Their selection of crepes is by no means vast, but c'mon, when you're studying for four hours straight and the mere notion that the cafe you are in makes fresh crepes, ooey gooey nutella-y, banana-y, delightful crepes... you can barely hold yourself back. I also find a lot of coffee shops to lack a selection of food food, the food that wont make you sick from sugar or overdose on lard. And I was highly pleased when I nommed into my egg sandwhich on fresh rye. They have outdoor seating which is fabulous for people watching and for you dog-owners out there. Service has always been friendly and efficient and the tea is loose leaf! Which has nothing to do with the former part of the last sentence, but I felt it was important to note. They have upstairs seating in which you can have quiet, uninterrupted, isolated conversations. It's a great fit for the area. I've been waiting for a place like this to pop up. Reason for lack of stars: Nothing I've had here has been extraordinary. The coffee is coffee, the tea is tea, the egg sandwich is an egg sandwich. read more

I've been here several times recently and have become a bit of a regular even though I don't live anywhere nearby! I just love the cosy sofas and plush seats here. The seating and general atmosphere (notice the huge bookshelf stocked with a variety of publications for free reading) are really conducive to relaxing, having a chat and enjoying everything Juice and Java has to offer. This is a nice change from the take out or work chat/study culture in many Toronto cafés. And if all the seats are taken, you can grab a take out and stroll on the beach! The food here is delicious. I've sampled quite a few of their offerings - the chocolate chip cookie, a simple bagel with cream cheese, and a bacon, brie and applesauce crepe - and all have been delicious. The crepe seems to be very popular in the below reviews and I can see why! Great combination of ingredients, in just the right proportions, and the crepe was cooked perfectly. I don't even care of the cookie is from Costco (I don't believe it is) - it tasted fresh and delicious and that's all that matters. I'm not a fan of their hot espresso drinks, the espresso tastes too weak and watery for my liking. For some reason though, the same espresso tastes much better in the iced drinks?! I love their iced mocha in particular. Their English Breakfast tea is also very nice and authentic. Staff are generally nice, but the service almost always seem a bit chaotic and disorganised whenever I'm here. Give yourself time, especially if you come on the weekends. That is my only minor criticism of an otherwise excellent and unique coffee shop in Torontos best neighbourhood! read more

I like the line on supporting local businesses, because this is a great example of one that is part of the community. And I don't mind giving it 4 stars because it's justifiable! The food is freshly homemade in front of you, with some great creative and tasty combinations. The coffee is not bad, but definitely better than the chain coffees (Starbucks & Tim Horton's). The prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is really great, with lots of space, with a variety of seating options. Great to do work in, chat with a friend, conduct a casual meeting, or even bring a larger group (4 or more) to pull some tables together and hang out. I hear where some are coming from with the perceived attitude, however, I really think that is just the personality of the owner (slightly more chilly European who thaws after continued interaction). I couldn't finish the sandwich I ordered either, and I don't think I'm a sandwich snob, it just wasn't very awesome... listless, dry chicken with some Brie and pear slices on decidedly unremarkable bread (I think it was just sliced Dempster's to be honest). I was relieved to read some of the other reviews of this cafe and see that I wasn't the only one who didn't feel that welcome. I've tried this place four of five times now and have just decided that though I want to like it that the quality of food and service make it a challenge. On my last visit I ordered a blueberry smoothie and ham and Swiss crepe. The crepe was perfectly fine but the smoothie was bland. The bigger issue is that the layout of the front order area is disorganized with things apparently placed randomly and the place overall doesn't come across as that clean. There was shelving in construction in the main order area with no signage to be cautious. In the meantime I noticed sandwiches being made with Wonderbread and have heard comments about pastries having come from Costco. I support small businesses in this area all the time but this one needs some quality TLC. read more

Terrible food and service - don't bother. Ordered a couple of smoothies for my daughter and crepes. Smoothies were supposed to be right up. Never showed. The crepes came after a loooong wait at which point we asked for the smoothies. They made it up once my daughters finished their crepes. I ordered a montreal smoked meat sandwich - it was HORRIBLE. The meat was mush and super salty on a tiny sandwich with also very salty mustard. I was supposed to have a glass of water, I gave up waiting and went and got my own. I guess that bent the servers nose out of joint as my daughter said she rolled her eyes at me when we left. We won't be back. read more

An obvious neighborhood favorite! This is a great spot in the heart of the beaches and run their business with unusual kindness and heart! I arrived after an hr long bike ride ready to be replenished with food and drink however after putting in my order realized their credit machine is down. Instead of having me walk away they said it's " on the house" and told me to repay them whenever I returned! I was stunned and grateful! They have a simple selection of light meal items: wraps, salads, crepes, coffee, smoothie... I loved thir Thai chicken wrap and their fresh lemonade sitting on their patio that was perfectly partly shaded! The inside has an open and modern decor but also comforting. I will definitely return, not merely to return the favor but for the pleasure of such a welcoming place and a lovely meal that leaves you feeling satisfied and happy! My cousins and I stumbled upon it during our bike ride around the beach area. The atmosphere is welcoming and quite comfy. I ordered a Mango Tango (Mango, banana and pineapple) smoothie and it's quite filling and tasty. I ordered a lemonade and it's more bitter and less sweet than what I am used to in Southern USA. My cousins ordered wraps and they seems to like it. There is a patio outside and it's great for if you want to "eat with your bike". Service is competent and not much I can add. read more

I love it here. It has a lot of seating options (tables, comfy chairs, even a couch) - my favourite is the table beside the window :) Very friendly staff. It's usually quiet (except at lunch when some of the school kids from the down the street come in) - seems to be the place where people like me bring our laptops to get some work done. I'm a huge fan of their ceaser salads and tuna sandwiches with an iced coffee/latte. The only downside is there are only two outlets, so if you don't sit near one and need a charge, you're out of luck! read more

Refreshing new find! We were looking for a decent brunch one Sun afternoon, that wasn't greasy & could serve a decent sandwich. We were -this close- to giving up and going to sunsetgrill since our stomachs couldn't last much longer, until we stumbled onto this little shop on the corner. It has a quaint little patio and a starbucks type interior seating area upstairs, with oversized leather couches, book cases and local art for sale. We ordered the curry tuna melt on rye and the Chicken & bacon with aioli and cranberrys (i can't fully remember the titles), with 2 orange juices. The bill came to just over 30$ with tip...so pretty expensive for two sandwiches and small orange juices. BUT we were not disappointed at all. The orange juice was freshly squeezed, the food had fresh ingredients and was so delicious! even the staff were super polite and helpful. I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely return for a treat and recommend this little gem to anyone looking for a change. :) read more
