Came here after nearby in south San Jose. This place is conveniently located right next to a VTA station, so good for commuters who want to grab a bite before/after work or school. The restaurant was clean and plenty of seating, and the staff was friendly and nice. I got the chicken wrap for $11, and it was massive and stuffed with well seasoned chicken, toasted vegetables, and some coleslaw. The wrap came with a spicy green sauce which gave a good kick of flavor. My friend got the goat plate for ~$19 and the goat was quite tender, and it was good eating it alongside the slightly sour injera sponge bread. We also got the sweet bread thinking it would be like a dessert, but instead it was very subtly sweet but still good because of its warmth and fluffiness. I never Somali food before and I saw how good it looked on TikTok so I went to go check it out. It's literally right in front of a VTA stop, so if you're too lazy, the VTA is a great option for transportation to this restaurant. Beware that you can only buy bottled water here, but there is complimentary hot tea here. It was super sweet and tasted like cinnamon. Samosa (5/5): We got three pieces and they were pretty big, like at least twice the size of the Trader Joe's ones. It was filled with pieces of herbs and meat. Super flavor and perfect balance between crunch and filling. It was super spicy though as I was dying. The green sauce complimented it pretty well. Beef Jubba Wrap (5/5): I was not sure if this was authentic Somali food, but it was amazing. This wrap was huge as it was stuffed with tender steak, veggies, and this creamy sauce that tasted similar to a burritos. I would recommend to either share this or save it for the next day. One of the best hidden gems. I always come here when I'm in the area. The place itself is pretty small and super hot cuz of the huge grill they got inside. They serve free complimentary tea and they're always super nice. You order up front and then sit down and wait for the food. I always get the beef wrap or beef sukaar. The meat is sautéed with delicious vegetables and the green sauce is a great spicy kick to the mix! The goat and chicken options are very flavorful! The restaurant is a bit confusing to get to. You have to drive through some apartments to get here, and park in what looks to be in a small VTA lot. Service is simple: You order, get a number, and they'll bring food to your table. I ordered the Goat Cutlet and Mandazi. Looking at the prices now and back when this restaurant came on my radar (about 10+ years ago), I really wish I had went back then, but if wishes were fishes... Anyway, while waiting for our food, my friends and I tried their tea, which is in a container on the opposite end of the restaurant from where you order. The tea came out very slowly, so I assume we got the last remaining drops. That would explain how intense the smell and flavor were. As I told my friend, the smell makes me think like I'm drinking a cup of Michael's Art Supply or the Holiday Season in a cup. Very sweet and spiced, I'd really like to see what this tastes like with a full container just to see if it's as intense with more liquid in it. The food came out relatively quick. I'd say it took around 10 minutes. You get a lot of food with your order. The Goat Cutlet plate came with: - Chunks of goat with onion and tomatoes - Seasoned rice - A salad of lettuce, tomato, and what seemed to be a mayonnaise or ranch-based dressing - A small cup of hot sauce and a lemon wedge The goat was very tender and slid off the bone. I don't know if they took my friend, Roger L.'s, review from 2011 to heart, but the goat was fantastic. The rice was okay, though a bit dry, and I actually preferred the salad more. The hot sauce added a good kick and richness to the dish. However, towards the end of my meal, I wished that I had asked for more hot sauce, as I had an abundance of rice with no lubrication for my mouth. Things to consider for next time! I ate with two friends, and I tried a bit of my friend's Beef Suqaar, which was great, and my other friend's Fish Wrap was huge and the fish tasted fine. The Mandazi was a puffed fry bread with not too much flavor, save for a bit of sweetness at the end. It came with an accompanying sauce which tasted like ranch to me. It was hot inside because of all the cooking, so we decided to eat outside. There's a long wait time, understandably. When food is ready, they call your order to pick it up from the counter. They also have free chai. Water is sold separately as water bottles. Goat cutlet with basmati rice. Rice is soft and has a lot of spices mixed into it, giving it a spicy aftertaste. You can get flatbread instead of rice, which tastes similar to a flour tortilla. Big pieces of goat. Goat suqaar came with rice and an option for half spaghetti. Spaghetti is spaghetti noodles with light tomato sauce. The meat pieces are decently portioned with some parts a little dry. The goat came off more on the bland side, but the flavors of the rice mixed in helped. They ran out of injeera so we didn't get to try it. All dishes came with a green jalapeño-tasting sauce. I really really REALLY enjoyed Jubba's. I honestly came into it with little expectations that ended up blowing my mind. Server was great. He happily greeted us and answered any questions we had since it was our first time. My wife ordered the Beef Suqaar and I ordered the Goat cutlet. If you want a short description of what Somalian food taste like, I would compare it to Chinese food but...Not Asian lol. The Beef Suqaar was delicious. It's a family-owned restaurant tucked on the corner, right next to the light rail station near Oakridge. Service was great and they'll definitely help out if it's your first time. My brother and I got the Sports Plate which was the perfect portion for two people. I remember the meat (I think it was beef?) being tender and flavorful, along with a healthy balance of veggies which tasted good with the green sauce that came with the plate. We also got the sambusas which I never had before, but it tasted so flavorful, I'd probably compare them almost to a samosa. All the food we ordered had me and my brother leaving full. While the service can be slow, the sizable portions and distinct flavors make for a nice casual dining experience at a reasonable price. It's rare to find Somalian in these parts and it's certainly still a joy to experience. The complimentary hot spiced sweet chai in the back is a delightful treat to enjoy while waiting for your food (just be ready for a wait to dine in). Like seriously, be prepared for a substantial wait time. Despite being the second table seated for lunch on a Sunday near opening, we patiently waited for 40 minutes to receive our food. It's worth noting that they were quite busy with numerous takeout orders, but not too many folks indoors at the time so I can't imagine what hitting them at peak will look like. Finding parking in the residential area surrounding the diner was relatively easy, as it wasn't too crowded and there was a sizable lot next to a train station. At the very least, it's a convenient spot to visit without worrying about parking troubles. ==Sports Plate (Beef + Goat + Rice + Injera) - 4/5 The sports plate is a nice combo deal with two meats and two "carb" sides. We went with goat, beef, injera and rice. Ours was split in two accidentally, but no harm no foul. Came with a nice little side salad and a mini tin of a mint chuntney (?). Both meats seemed to be served as a juicy stir-fry with an accompanant of veggies and are both satisfying, though the goat was less optimal for me. The goat, while somewhat dry, had a rich gaminess while being served on the bone. The beef was just perfect though; succulent and full of flavor, leaving a satisfying impression. The rice served was fluffy and wonderfully fragrant. Unlike the sour injera of Ethiopian cuisine, the injera served here had more of a freshly-toasted-wheat aroma, but was a little...stickier/spongier than I am used to. Overall a cozy, hearty meal at a good price. Service speed definitely leaves something to be desired though, so I advise much patience before coming. I'm glad we tried it out then and now because it's still good. The prices have gone up, but at least they give you a good amount of food, so it's worth it. So delicious. I came on Friday night when it was moderately crowded and waited about 20 minutes before getting my order. Waiting here was really hard because the food smelled so good. Indoor seating was a bit toasty, so I sat outside. It was nice watching the trains go by as I waited for the food. The servers were friendly, and the vibe of the place was very relaxed. I ordered the Beef Suqaar and the Sports Plate with Chicken and Goat, both with rice. The bed of rice was so beautifully seasoned and aromatic, with the essence of the meat on top seeping into it. The meats were cooked with lots of vegetables, including broccoli, carrots, onion, and water chestnuts. The goat had that bit of fattiness on it, so that goat flavor really came through. And the green sauce was spicy and slightly garlicky, and paired perfectly with the fragrant rice and meat. The serving sizes were generous, and I had about half my plate to pack and keep for later. The food was excellent, I had the goat stew because where else are you going to find it? My friend had the chicken wrap and was very happy with it as well. They include a light green hot sauce, give it respect but not fear. Medium-high Scoville score I think. All the sweet, rich tea you can drink, you just have to walk to the rear and serve yourself. Service was fine, you order at the counter and they bring it. Note that the food is tasty but not quick. Each dish carefully assembled after you order, it seems. I opted for Injera, however they also offer rice and noodles (spaghetti noodles with butter) which are also both delicious (I shared with my friends). One plate is good for sharing between 2 persons because of the large portion size. The spiced herbal tea is great and keeps you warm while you wait for your food. However, I only wish there was better ventilation in the restaurant. There seemed to be a lack of air circulation from the kitchen and our clothes ended up smelling greasy and like BBQ after dinner.
