East Oakland

I wanted to make sure I followed up because I know my review will mean something for this business. I brought my classic Toyota Land Cruiser to Nayarit Transmission in East Oakland for a transmission fluid change. From the start, I felt at ease. Yes, there's a security dog on-site, but the way the owner treats him says everything!he's clearly part of the family, not just for show. As someone who loves dogs, I really respected that. The owner walked me through the whole process, explained why a higher-quality filter gasket was worth it (and he was right the one I had wasn't great), and even saved the old fluid to show the work was done right. He got the job done faster than I expected and at a more-than-fair price. This shop is built on honesty, hard work, and family values. In today's world, that's rare. I highly recommend Nayarit Transmission if you want quality work and someone you can truly trust with your car.

I came to Nayarit because another mechanic at a different shop said my transmission on my 2015…read moreNissan Rogue was damaged and they don't deal with replacing transmissions. A quick perusal of Reddit revealed that Nissan Rogues from this time period were notorious for major problems with the CVT transmissions and there was no fix apart from replacement. I am always a bit terrified of dealing with mechanics because I realize how vulnerable I am to having to trust the expertise of a complete stranger and I have no real independent way of verifying that I am not being taken for a ride. I was fully expecting having to shell out $7000 or more. So, when I rolled up into Nayarit, I was greeted my Marcos. He was friendly and welcoming, and fully explained the history of problems with Nissan Rogue transmissions and why they generally have to be replaced. But he said he wouldn't know for sure until he did a full diagnostic. So, I left my vehicle with him, fully expecting the worse. So, I was quite surprised when Marcos called me and said that perhaps my problem was not my transmission, but instead the transfer case that is attached to the transmission. The transfer case, well, transfers power, between the front and rear axles for all wheel drive. Marcos explained that replacing the transfer case, which is a third of the cost of replacing the transmission, might fix the problem. But he warned me that, sometimes, after replacing the transfer case, they realize the transmission still needs to be replaced. I was cautiously hopeful, but still prepared for the worst. In just two days, Marcos replaced the transfer case, did a full tune-up of the existing transmission, as well as some other severely needed maintenance, and turned my vehicle over to me working perfectly. No need for a new transmission! What??!!? Marcos could have told me I needed a new transmission, and I would have believed him. It is extremely evident that Marcos is extraordinarily trustworthy - he will do a careful diagnostic review of your vehicle, carefully explain exactly what is wrong based on his expertise and experience, and will only repair or replace what is necessary. The cost of his work is very fairly priced. He works fast. He takes great pride in the high quality of his work. He has integrity. What more could you possibly hope for? Thank you, Marcos. You are awesome!

I will always be thankful for both of them, as well as Brian, for all the care and consideration. They will be missed. I was a bit uneasy when I dropped-off my car this morning by not seeing familiar faces anymore, but that quickly melted away. The receptionist was cordial, easy to work with, and was careful with everything. To my surprise, I received a text message about what was going on with the car outside of needing an oil change and the incurred charges. When I authorized it, I got a phone call later on that it would need a new engine air filter, too, and once again, was given a price quote up-front, and said they'll order the part and it will be installed in ASAP. I received both a text message AND a phone call that the car was ready, which was super nice that they covered both bases. When I arrived and was being charged out, I was happy to see that Tim is still working in the shop, and he recognized me. They lucked out that he stayed on-board, as he did amazing work with my previous car. I will say I was fortunate that they took care of my car, as they wanted to reschedule my appointment for another time, but they were kind enough to look at it anyways because I was about to do a road trip to Southern California to visit my mom. I appreciate they were still able to do the work, and I have peace of mind I can travel safely. I am impressed with the level of service and care I received today, and I know Jim would be proud knowing that the new ownership has not tainted his shop's reputation. My family will keep supporting them with maintaining our cars, as the competency beat keeps on with this establishment. Thank you!

I didn't know who to take it to, and I don't know much if at all about cars. I had it towed while out of town directly to Jon, and he had it fixed and ready to go in no time. Jon is the best!!! Thx Jon and Diablo Auto Specialists for getting my vehicle back running smooth again and for being unicorns in the industry; having integrity, being ethical and not cheating people out of their money! We had 4 cars we took there and always had confidence in the work. Jon's gone and I'm stunned with the change in service now. They don't offer an online list out of items inspected including pictures showing what they've found, and recommendations for work needing to be done. They don't text you with an estimate. They don't call if you need something replaced; you find out only after you show up. The customer service is gone. But it's worse than that. But what really shocked me up was opening up the hood of my car to add some washer fluid only to notice the air filter housing was still unclipped, which seemed negligent. But opening the housing I discovered the air filter was missing entirely! They serviced my car 5000 miles ago and my car didn't have an air filter put in. I was just planning on taking it in for service but it won't be with them now. I'm livid! I'm done with Diablo Auto Specialists, or Autoworx or whatever name change is going on there. I would never go back and would highly discourage anyone else from going there.

I brought my car in due to an intermittent gear slipping issue, which I had already traced to a solenoid problem--a very common issue with my Pontiac G6. The symptoms only occurred twice, very briefly. My check engine light came on both times but turned off on its own. I was still able to drive the car on the freeway at full speed with no issues. The problem only showed up during city stop-and-go traffic. I specifically asked if they could just replace the solenoid, and was told no. Instead, I was told I "only had gears 1 and 2" and that I'd need a $4,800 transmission rebuild--which is objectively false, as I literally drove the car 70+ mph on the freeway both before and after leaving the shop. My engine light was off before coming to the shop, turned on once at the shop, then turned back off shortly after leaving. There is no way my car had only gears 1 & 2 I know what that feels like as it happened twice briefly. So to say this to me is insane. Mind you wouldn't have been able to go more than 25 with out the car struggling they must have assumed I don't know a thing about cars. Possibly because I'm a woman and I went alone. They also claimed the solenoid was too difficult to access without replacing the computer and warned me about my car's mileage, as if that meant it wasn't worth fixing. But then, on my way out, they admitted it's a "really great car" and "this is the only issue." It felt manipulative. I decided to trust my gut, went to a different shop, and had the solenoid replaced--and now my car runs perfectly fine. No rebuild needed. If I hadn't known what I was talking about, they would've gladly let me spend thousands on a completely unnecessary repair. Trust yourself. Do your research. Don't let fear-based upselling push you into something you don't need. Also from reading the reviews it sounds like the routinely tell their customers they need a rebuild and successfully do the rebuild. (more than likely something very easily replaceable) However a good transmission shop doesn't just rebuild, they properly and honestly diagnose and repair. He also tried selling me cars on the way out. Notice how he hasn't replied to this yelp review and also told me he feels bad for me in the text? Very unprofessional I don't need your pitty I needed honesty which I didn't get from this shop. He also told me don't buy a used car you can't guarantee you won't have problems it's best if you fix this one with us. Also told me not to go to another shop because id want a local shop lol

They charged $280 just to diagnose it, and even then, they weren't able to actually fix the problem because they said they couldn't find the part. For a car as basic and common as a Ford Focus, that didn't sit right with me. What was more disappointing was the overall experience. The communication wasn't helpful, and the attitude felt dismissive rather than solution-oriented. If you're going to charge that much for diagnosis, I would expect clearer answers or at least some guidance on next steps. It also felt like their focus has shifted since moving locations. There seemed to be a lot of attention on vintage and specialty vehicles, and less interest in helping someone with a standard daily driver. At this point, I'm getting a second opinion because I don't feel confident in the diagnosis or the value of the service provided.
