Our 11 month old chameleon suddenly got sick right before a trip, and we were honestly panicking and didn't know what to do. Bryan was incredibly knowledgeable, empathetic, and helpful through the whole process. Even though he's not a vet, he took the time to ask us detailed questions, observe our chameleon's movements, and help us troubleshoot possible causes. We learned so much from him, especially about improving our UV lighting setup and overall husbandry. He gave us realistic options based on the time and resources we had before leaving town, which we really appreciated. I have been to many reptile shops before & no place could prepare me for the condition of this shop. The smell was over bearable, flea and gnats in your face as you walk around, terrariums full of feces, dried water bowls. There is no excuse for any of these conditions, owner replies to people claiming it's because of "amount" of reptiles yet i've never seen this issue anywhere else before, you don't sell soap and flowers you claim but no reptile store should smell like this. Large snakes kept tanks I wouldn't even keep a hamster in! I've never felt so bad for an animal. Instead of spending your time bad mouthing to half these reviews why not clean the feces off the walls of your enclosures? These animals deserve so much better. I've been interested in reptiles and arachnids since I was a kid and have visited many reptile stores in So cal. Nothing prepared me for the conditions and smell of this store. During the pandemic i was looking for feeders for my snake since the shop in Bixby Knolls I frequented and trusted closed. Mostly I also wanted to stay local too instead of going all the way to Westminster to Reptile Factory. This shop gives the hobby a bad name. Animals are in way too small enclosures and the smell hits you from across the parking lot. I even tried to give the shop another chance as we go to the donut shop next door but things have not improved and I would not trust feeders from here for our snake. Reputable shops do not smell like this, nor are animals kept in such confined conditions. I hope these this shop is shut down and the reptiles can be rehomed to cleaner and proper environments. read more

The best selection and wonderful service of any reptile store I've even been in. I've been obsessed with reptiles my entire life so I've been in many shops so I can tell you that Bryan is the most knowledgeable around. Does it smell horrible when you walk in? Of course! If you k ow anything about reptiles you know what they eat.. and what you eat eventually.. well you get it. The cages are clean and best of all these animals are happy and well cared for which is super important when breeding and raising reptiles because you need them to be socialized. This place makes me sick to my stomach. The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the smell. There are a lot of cages riddled with feces. Cages far too small for the animal they are housing. You'll find enclosures without water put out. You'll find reptiles who appear emaciated. You'll hear the owner chatting away on his Instagram live instead of doing whatever it takes to give these creatures a more comfortable space. I told my boyfriend about it and he thought I was exaggerating until he came in with me. He couldn't stand in the shop for longer than three minutes. He's not the biggest animal rights advocate- yet he still pushed me to contact organizations to shed some light on the disgusting way these animals are kept. This place was great! I've been coming to Jtk since I was a young kid. They have a huge variety of reptiles from small spiders to huge snakes. Bryan has a ton of different monitors including green anacondas. Bought feeders here for my snakes for the first time because I was in the area and the following days later I find MITES on my snakes whom I fed the rodents to. I usually buy feeders from a shop i've visited for a year and I have never gotten any sort of issues but the one thing I changed was the feeders. The actual owners keep this shop in FILTH. The reptiles are beautiful but the abuse of how they're being treated should be resolved. Left this store in tears. It smells like death before you even walk in the door. Many of the reptiles seemed to be glass surfing and agitated. Some had layers of shed and feces on the glass. The entire store was full of flies and you could see some of the flies trapped in the tanks with the reptiles. We stopped by to see a snake originally that we had called about on the phone. The worker pulled the snake from a stack of boxes behind the counter but when she lifted the box the body of the snake looked sunken and skinny, like it hadn't been eating or had the right humidity. The tank was dry as a bone so she took it to the back to spray it down. When she came back she told us the snake was no longer available. In my gut I feel like it was probably dead from the glance that I got. Please don't support this store. There are so many other more reputable stores around. They don't seem to take proper care of the reptiles they have. The price that they quoted me over the phone was exceptionally high and so I had expected it to be coming from a high quality shop. read more

The owners care deeply for their animals and the quality of live feed here is better then Petco. You'll notice the extensive exotic pets in their collection. Our community is lucky to have JTK in our area. Response: I do own snakes and have for 15 years, while my fiance has owned snakes for 24 years. Snakes do not "constantly" poop, and it's quite easy to clean when they do poop weekly or less often, depending on the size and species of the snake. I know EXACTLY where you were sitting as we came in, and it was not behind the register dealing with silkworms. Besides my fiance, myself, and you, I saw one other person, a blonde woman who appeared to be an employee, closing the door that was propped open. No customers. According to your replies in previous reviews, you have specific cleaning days. You have made the excuse before for your filthy cages, stating that it was "before cleaning day". If every day was cleaning day, I would expect to see cleaner cages WITHOUT weeks of build-up. In a few pictures posted here on Yelp, the filthy conditions can be seen. I just "love" the picture of SEVERAL African Fat tailed geckos hovering around a freshly filled water bowl. For a group to be that thirsty, they were without water for quite some time. That species also does not belong on sand, since they do require higher humidity levels than what sand will allow. It's clear that you will never think you're wrong to house animals in disgusting conditions. Quit attempting to make excuses. read more

There are way too many animals in there and it is obvious that the owner of this shop and his wife cannot handle the care that is required for that many reptiles. This place is disgustingly dirty and these animals are poorly cared for. I purchased a ball python from here less than a month ago, immediately noticed she was infested with snake mites. I took her to a vet where I was told she was sick and has been infested for a while. Her tank has been cleaned routinely and it didn't help a bit, this morning we noticed she was dead. I immediately called and was told that that they would do nothing to remedy this situation but replace the snake with another sickly animal. This is traumatizing to my 6 year old who the snake was purchased for. Stay far away from this nasty infestation of a reptile store! I sent pictures! These animals are not well taken care of, the shop is disgusting... I told them another animal from them is just unacceptable considering the condition they are in and I was hung up on. You have not seen angry nor upset, I wanted a refund solely for my animal and I would eat the $ on the accessories. Instead, I've contacted animal control and the health department. Go to petco or petsmart if you care about your animals being clean and properly cared for. read more

My husband and I always pass by this place on our way to the community garden, and being a reptile lover and owner, I had to stop by and take a look. I did look at the reviews beforehand, and quite a few were either 5 star or 1 star. I didn't come with any expectations since some reptiles are super finicky, and there are differences in opinion on how herps should be cared for anyway. There was an obvious smell when I first walked in, but that's the nature of caring for reptiles so no big deal to me. However, after looking around for quite a while, A LOT of cages were in poor condition. They were not cleaned, and almost all water bowls were disgusting and murky. I have cared for a lot of reptiles over the years, and I understand that some animals are hard to take care of because they poop in water or not people friendly, but there is absolutely no reason for a Panther chameleon, leopard gecko, or knob-tailed gecko to have such large piles of fecals. I have cared for all of these animals personally and they are easy animals to clean up after. Mind you, Lish D.'s review was about visiting two days ago, mine was from today, and the tanks still are not clean! The animals for the most part seemed okay - but knowing their housing conditions made me decide to not purchase or go back to JTK Reptiles again. When we made our way to the back, there was a girl behind the counter with her feet up on the office chair on her phone. She did ask if we needed help, but it seemed as though she was too busy... I understand that reptiles are messy creatures, but this is inexcusable. I would have at least been happy to see someone attempt to go around cleaning and such, but this was pretty sad. No one cleaning, most tanks that are "easy" were disgusting, and I left with a heavy heart. This place a wide array of reptiles habitats and feeders. HOWEVER HUSBANDRY OF THESE ANIMALS IS POOR. Cages are not clean, some animals are sick. I saw a leopard gecko, skinny as a rail, shed still stuck on its feet and eyes, and I'm pretty sure it was dead if not near death. I own leopard gecko and I went to this store looking at the possibility of finding another tank or other accessories. I felt so sad for these animals. Negligence should not be acceptable. I wouldn't go here for anything but MAYBE feeders & not even then. Update: In response to store owners comments, I'm just gonna our out there that FECES THAT HAS TURNED WHITE IS OLD. Old shit = cage not being cleaned. Not to mention the gigantic MULTIPLE dried piss stains in some of the tanks. Some cages are clean, but AT LEAST a vast majority has dirty AF water or POOP old and fresh. That's not clean Also their store doesn't look like their Instagram or Facebook. I I like this place the staff is down to earth and friendly. I love coming in to see all the different types of snakes they have and a hug tortis. I came in today to purchase a baby Sulcata. I didn't really have time to look around because my daughters were terrified of the reptiles lol. But I had called ahead of time so I knew exactly what we were in there to get. I was quickly helped and picked my baby Sulcata. The owner is very knowledgeable. He gave me some recommendations for my Sulcatas new home which I'm grateful for. The place seemed clean. I didn't really smell anything to bad as others have mentioned, but I mean it's a pet shop what do you expect. Especially one with reptiles. The only thing I really didn't care for was the high price on the items I purchased. I'm sure if I would've gone to a chain store I would've saved maybe $30! But I was in a rush with two toddlers and baby so I paid the price so I won't entirely complain about the price. It was a one stop shop! It is what it is and as a small business owner myself I understand the prices, we all got to eat :) thanks Brian for your advice on my Sulcata!
