3.5 stars JP Gifford is a great, casual lunch spot located in downtown Kent with deli vibes. They have a lot of breakfast, salad, and sandwich options. The superfood salad was exactly what I was looking for and the greens were so fresh! Not a single wilted leaf. The cheddar pieces were a little chunky but some people enjoy that. My husband enjoyed his caesar salad with chicken as well. The burger and fries were good and the portion was generous. I do recommend they add kids portions or a kids menu as the portions are a bit too big for the young ones. The staff were very nice as well. There's seating both inside and outside. I highly recommend coming here on a nice day and eating outside! read more

Very good breakfast wrap. I got something simple. Sausage egg and cheese on a gluten-free wrap. Only thing I would adjust is the amount of cheese. There was a lot in each bite but I'd say one or two slices would be enough for me haha. My boyfriend got the chicken and egg which was also amazing. read more

JP Gifford is on Main Street in Kent, down by House of Books. It seems to a hot spot amongst "kids these days" because when I went in it was packed with teenagers. It makes me feel so old to say, but egads! There was no space to sit, little space to maneuver into line. The ambiance was a bit noisy. Maybe if the outdoor seating had been open... Anyway, there are cold drinks and a coffee station, and if you're not up to waiting for a table, there are many delicious pastries to order to go. They also have a display for self stable items like cocoa powder and dog treats (my dog is loving the salmon flavor!). The pastry I ordered (a chocolate coffee cake) had good flavor, a solid line of chocolate, and traveled well with any breakage. read more

Fascinating. We had a very different experience from some of these writers of glowing reviews. Just for variety, we've been trying to branch out from Wilson's by Highwatch, which we adore and seem to end up at just about every weekend. Ergo the slightest of detours (a few buildings down from Wilson's) into JP Gifford on a recent weekend for a quick meal after ski practice. Except... it wasn't a quick meal. It wasn't even a medium-paced meal. It was. A. Slow. Meal. A very slow meal. We waited in line around 10 minutes to order and pay. And then we waited another hour for our food to be announced (quietly) by the caller / cashier, announcements that often went unacknowledged in the packed, noisy cafe. We regretted not stopping in at a restaurant with table service, where at least the food might have merited the wait. It's possible we ordered all the wrong things. We did not order any sandwiches and that seems to be the strong suit, here. Instead, we ordered a kale and turkey soup that was probably housemade (big plus) but also incredibly bland and watery. There was a lot of dry turkey that had been cooked into oblivion, in my portion, which I could've done without. An All-American Wrap ($8.99; Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns and American Cheese in a Plain Wrap) was enjoyable -- I'm a sucker for carb on carb goodness -- but on the small side for our slender 11-year old. The chicken pad thai ($13.99), on the other hand, was, to be completely blunt, inedible. It was worse than the reconstituted versions you can buy at grocery stores, possibly the worst version I've ever had. Noodles were overcooked and already mushy when we received it, and they were doused in some horrible, low-brow, plastic sauce pack quality liquid that I later realized had been referenced on the menu as sweet and sour sauce. (My friends, even if this really were sweet and sour sauce, sweet and sour sauce does NOT belong in pad thai!!!) The chicken, sprinkled over as an afterthought, was tough, dry, overcooked and bland. The dish as a whole tasted like a late night experimental dish I might've made in the microwave in college with leftovers and ketchup. Someone in our party had a scone, who said it was passable -- but not as good as those from a certain bakery just a few doors down. I don't mean to be unfair -- this isn't a Thai restaurant of course -- but just thinking about the excessively long wait for "pad thai" again warms my collar. And something THAT bad just makes the entire menu / cafe lose foodie credibility. Maybe the JP Gifford slow roll works for the students at the nearby boarding school who cram into the cafe on weekends and want to loiter as long as possible. Came here with some classmates on a trip. This was one of their childhood spots and he recommends the chicken sandwich. I enjoyed my devil on the highway burger, which I got well done, and other folx enjoyed the breakfast sandwiches and pastries (like the lemon poppyseed muffin, which was very soft and most). I was pleasantly surprised that my burger was sweet, and it was filling. The Avocado Toast another friend got lacked seasoning and my hot chocolate was bland, those were not worth the price. I'd come here for a burger again though. Employees were nice and brought food to our table, calling by our name. My friend didn't get their pastry until their coffee was ready. Space wasn't too crowded on a weekend at brunch, it's a good spot whether you're a senior or you have kids. read more

This is excellent restaurant quality food served without fuss in a deli style venue. I have to eat salad even though it bores me - the strawberry field greens had a fantastic dressing and I loved it. Stopped here on my way up Skiff Mountain to speak at my old high school. It was the perfect breakfast pit stop. I grabbed Sausage Egg and Cheese on a croissant- cause I'm fancy- and a coffee. It was a apple chicken sausage pattie to be clear and it was delicious. Just the right amount of cheese. The croissant was nice & soft and the sausage- again- was delicious. My classmate got the spicy sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on a roll. He said it was really good. My SEC looked way better tho- I got the flicks to prove it! The staff was kind, patient and helpful. No complaints here. There's enough seating for groups I saw some in-house made soups that I look forward to trying when I go back to Kent. read more

Love this place. Whenever I'm in town I come here to grab some lunch and leave with a handful of assorted pastries and cookies. They have a variety of sandwiches, salads, grain bowels and other prepared food. I usually get the white cheddar Granny Smith apple melt which is soooooo good. All the other sandwiches are also great! The French fries are also amazing. They also have an assortment of prepared food that changes day to day. Usually a selection of pasta salads Mac n cheese and some salmon. If you're in Kent this is definitely the place to get lunch. read more

I stopped here to grab a breakfast sandwich after taking a hike along the nearby River Rd walk. I was able to call in and place an order for two breakfast sandwiches, one on an english muffin and the other on a croissant. They were ready quickly and delicious with their high quality meat and cheese. I will say that they were a bit more expensive than I was expecting, the bill for two sandwiches came to $15, but overall delicious. I LOVE this spot. A must stop if you are in the Kent area for lunch. Plenty of outdoor seating (on a sunny day like today, even in November, it's perfect). Tons of sandwiches and baked goods and lots of seating. Great service as well! There is always a group of 'regulars' - old men talking about how this generation just doesn't understand anything. Quaint deli atmosphere in downtown Kent. If you are a fan of dark coffee, order the sledgehammer. It is a wonderful roast. The customer service is nice. I stopped in with my mom, who is a tad picky. I'm visiting a few days in Kent, and have stopped on two different occasions for something to eat. The first - an avocado toast - was nothing more than 1/2 a mashed avocado very thinly spread over whole wheat toast. There didn't seem to be much avocado on it, which is why I say 1/2 an avocado.No seasonings, no tomato, no onion. Nothing - and it cost over $8. More disappointing was the Chicken Pad Thai I picked up today for lunch. It was not Chicken Pad Thai. It was a container of sweet and sour noodle slop with edamame and red peppers. This is my favorite place to eat everytime I am visiting family in Kent! I go back time and time again...here's just some of the reasons why: 1. They make amazing breakfast sandwiches. 2 farm fresh eggs, your choice of cheese and meat. They also have fresh croissants, bagels, english muffins, or rolls to put your creation on. Because of the quality of the ingredients, the final product is just amazing. Pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea and the coffee bar, a newspaper, and youre good to go. 2. The deli, switch over from breakfast to lunch... not only do they do the typical sandwiches, but they also do great homemade food: quiches, seafood, steak...all incredible. 3. The actual market. You can find some produce, pastas, high end meats and cheeses, unusual organic snacks, drinks, crackers, chips, candy, chocolates, syrups....everything! It has an unusual array (in a really good way). Its not your typical convenience store market, much more upscale. 4. They sell a fair amount of local goods. Milks, yogurts, ice creams, and food from local farms. As for the rest of the store, its clean, has some nice indoor and outdoor seating, and is really worth the money. We decided to go for a roadtrip to Kent, known for beautiful countryside and spectacular fall colors. Driving on the main street at lunch time, we decided to stop in at this busy little establishment. People were eating at tables outdoors, and there are 3 long tables indoors as well. I ordered the chicken tikka masala flatwich, which was SO GOOD!!! It was flatbread on the bottom piled with warm seasoned/grilled chicken, tomato chutney, greens, and a cucumber sauce for $9. DH got Prosciutto and mozarella sandwich: Prosciutto di Parma, Fresh Mozzarella, Walnut Basil Pesto, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Balsamic Syrup on a Rustic Baguette for $10. They have some nice-looking desserts and lots of yummy salads/sides, but we didn't try them. If we're back in the area again, this is a definite return-visit place! Now I'm looking back on 28 years fighting an overwhelming sense of regret for not eating here sooner! The chicken cutlet apple melt is incredible!! I was in between the carne asada taco and pulled pork sandwich and while I'm sure those are great, I know I made a great call. I don't typically like mustard, but the honey mustard on this sandwich paired so well with the shaved apples. Just the right amount of cheese and fresh brioche makes this an unforgettable chicken cutlet. My wonderful wife had the salad special: a melon, prosciutto, burrata salad. Today's married-life lesson of the day - we really love burrata cheese. They even used different types of melon which brought so much added flavor and variety to the salad. An all-time favorite. I've been getting their bacon egg and cheese's forever. It makes me sad they only can make these in the mornings, I guess it's good for my favorite pair of jeans. A nice place that radiates the true Kent ~feel~. You always see someone you know here, everyone stops by. The tables are communal, which lets you get to know other folks. Horribly rude staff and overpriced, tasteless sandwiches. My husband and I ordered 2 sandwiches and purchased 2 drinks (for $25) a few days ago at JP Gifford and we were treated incredibly rudely by the staff. I pulled down my mask for approximately 2 seconds to take a sip of the drink I just had purchased and was loudly chided by the server, who was over 6 feet away and behind plastic. Then I asked to use the restroom and was told it was "not open to the public". I have lived in the area for 22 years and have been to this restaurant before and had a nice experience, but this was just plain rude. I understand Covid rules, but are we not allowed to be treated with kindness and humanity any longer because of Covid? Also, the sandwiches we ordered, a breakfast burrito and a veggie burger with hummus, were tasteless and dry. I will not be returning to JP Gifford, ever read more
